I hope to continue to go deep into covering artists that were important to me in my formative years. The songs I've chosen seem to resonate in the present moment. 'Rehumanize Yourself', 'Landlord', and 'Murder By Numbers' explore ugly kinds of nationalism, abuses of power, and the mendacity of large swaths of the ruling class. And then there are the timeless, relatable psychodramas: 'Every Breath You Take', 'Can't Stand Losing You', 'Canary In A Coalmine'. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;In the Police, each player's style was so distinctive, accomplished and unique that I didn't even attempt to match any of it; for anyone to try and play drums like Stewart Copeland would be a thankless, pointless task that is bound to fail. Instead, I simplified and deconstructed, playing a lot of the drums myself, in my rudimentary, caveman style. Chris Anzalone (Roomful Of Blues) played the rest of the drums. Ed Valauskas (the Gravel Pit) and I each played about half of the bass parts, while I did all the guitars and keyboards. I listened to a lot of the Police when I was preparing and making this album, and their recordings are as refreshing and exciting as ever. & lt;p & gt;Blood is Juliana Hatfield's 19th solo studio album of originals, and a deep dive into the dark side. The album is a brutal and critical look at modern human psychology and behavior - at personal and societal sickness. & quot;I think these songs are a reaction
to how seriously and negatively a lot of people have been affected by the past four years, & quot; says Juliana. & quot;But it's fun, musically. There's a lot of playing around. I didn't really have a plan when I started this project. & quot; & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt; & quot;Chunks & quot; and & quot;Had A Dream & quot; are gritty and abrasive while & quot;Mouthful Of Blood & quot; and & quot;Gorgon & quot; are groovy and ultra-melodic. All of it is eminently hummable and thought-provoking. Sophisticated but catchy. Challenging but danceable. & quot;I always love coming up
with melodies and then trying to fit words into them - it's like doing a puzzle, & quot; says Juliana. & quot;And I always find places to use the Mellotron flutes and strings, on every album, because those sounds are so beautiful to me. They are a nice counterpoint

& lt;p & gt;The album was recorded largely at home - Juliana's home in Massachusetts and new collaborator Jed Davis's home in Connecticut. & quot;During self-isolation I took the opportunity to finally learn how to record into my laptop, & quot; says Juliana, & quot;and that's how
this album came to be. (Usually I work in a studio.) I did more than half the work in my room - with Jed helping me to troubleshoot the technology, and helping with building and arranging some of the songs - and then I finished up with additional overdubs
and mixing with engineer James Bridges at Q Division Studios in Somerville, MA. & quot; & lt;/p & gt;

The electronic rhythms and computerized guitar effects give the album a rough-hewn edge, a nerviness that helps push the anxiety and dread to the forefront. Hatfield shrouds these complex feelings within the cloak of bold hooks and she modulates the album
so it has softer, almost meditative moments that offer a bit of a respite. All the shifting sounds and emotions lend Blood an uneasy undercurrent that counters the immediacy of her melodies, but this tension isn't merely provocative, it's nourishing.
Few pop records have captured the agitation of the early 2020s as well as this homespun project, which feels a bit like a beacon in the darkness.

& lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt; & quot;When Joe from American Laundromat asked if I'd be interested in doing a covers album, I was hesitant, mainly because most of the songs I truly love are already perfect in their original form. But then I had the idea to ask the brilliant Parkington Sisters to be the band for this project, to bring their gorgeous sound and spirit, and make it something cohesive and centered. Happily, they said Yes. So I chose a handful of songs that have been on heavy rotation in my head and heart from the first time I heard them, and the Sisters took over. They charted and plotted and arranged, and I joined Rose and Sarah and Ariel recording at Jon Evans' Brick Hill Studio in Orleans MA, with guest players Matthias Bossi and Jon Evans (who also engineered). Lydia P put down some cello later, and I recorded additional vocals at Q Division Studios in Somerville MA, with James Bridges engineering. These are some of the most honest, moving, beautiful, unfiltered, true and cool songs that have ever been written, in my opinion.
