He recorded with both John Coltrane ( & quot;Ascension & quot;) and John Lennon ( & quot;Life with Lions & quot;), and he founded the ensemble & quot;New York Art Quartet & quot;. John Tchicai was the first recipient of a lifetime grant for Jazz performance from the State of Denmark. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Roswell Rudd is a Grammy Award-nominated American jazz trombonist and composer. Although skilled in a variety of genres of jazz and other genres of music, he is known primarily for his work in free and avant-garde jazz. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Milford Graves is an American jazz drummer and percussionist, most noteworthy for his early avant-garde contributions in the early 1960s with Paul Bley and the New York Art Quartet. He is considered to be a free jazz pioneer, liberating the percussion from its timekeeping role. Graves has worked as a sideman and session musician with a variety of established jazz musicians throughout his career, including Don Pullen, Eddie Gomez, Andrew Cyrille, Rashied Ali, Kenny Clarke, Don Moye, Philly Joe Jones, John Zorn and Albert Ayler. He has invested his time in research within the field of healing through music. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Their music was fairly free, emotional, and quite notable for the trombone-alto frontline. The group was formed after Tchicai departed from The New York Contemporary Five, and the New York Art Quartet lasted until Rudd joined Archie Shepp's Quartet. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Scott Yanow, allmusic.com & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Triple Point Records preserves timeless improvised creations in definitive physical editions--for the benefit of artists, listeners, and collectors. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recordings take place: LP1 Side A 1 - July 16, 1965, Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey; LP1 Side A 2, Side B 1-2, LP2 Side C. 1-2 - December 31, 1964, Judson Hall, New York City; LP2 Side C. 3-4, LP2 Side D. 1-4 - January 17, 1965 WBAI Studios, New York City; LP3 Side E 1-5, LP3 Side F 1-3 - early 1965, loft of Michael Snow New York City; LP4 Side G 1-4 - July 15, 1965, Museum of Modern Art sculpture garden, New York City; LP4 Side G 5, LP4 Side H 1, LP5 Side I 1-2, LP5 Side J 1 - October 31, 1964, loft of Marzette Watts, New York City; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Hand-Numbered, Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Strictly Limited to Only 665 Copies & lt;br & gt; • 5LP Box Set & lt;br & gt; • 150g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • 4 Hours of Music from 6 Sessions & lt;br & gt; • Pressed by Quality Record Pressings & lt;br & gt; • Includes Hardcover Clothbound 156-Page Book in a Wooden Box containing the Compete History of the Quartet and its members & lt;br & gt; • Housed in Custom Birchwood Box with dozens of Photos, Manuscripts & amp; other Memorabilia & lt;br & gt; • Previously Uncirculated Music from 1964-1965 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; John Tchicai, saxophone, alto saxophone & lt;br & gt; Roswell Rudd, trombone, euphonium & lt;br & gt; Milford Graves, drums, conga, vocals & lt;br & gt; Lewis Worrell, bass & lt;br & gt; Reggie Workman, bass & lt;br & gt; JC Moses, drums & lt;br & gt; Alan Shorter, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Eddie Gomez, bass & lt;br & gt; Amiri Baraka, reading & lt;br & gt; Don Moore, bass & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP1 - Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Duets is their only meeting in studio apart from both artists appearing on Taylor's 1966 landmark Blue Note LP Conquistador. In 1992 they made the briefest summer festival tour to Italy and France, budgeting in two additional days for this recording session. That musical output was prepared for a release that was shelved for more than a quarter century and now comes out as a posthumous release in tribute to both giants. The initiative to release this music began with the Bill Dixon Trust and was approved by Taylor in his final years. Now, a wider public will hear music that they both prized, documenting the extraordinary relationship between their musicalities. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Duets is a remarkable and unique item in the extensive catalogs of both men's recordings. Fans familiar with Dixon and Taylor's distinctive styles will approach with curious uncertainty: How could it possibly work to blend styles of Joyce and Hemingway? Pollock and Kline? Nevelson and Brancusi? Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor share a fundamental fiber of taste and reaction as the basis for their interaction. The complementary nature of Duets makes the case thoroughly that the project stands apart not just from the numerous duet projects of both instrumentalists, but from the wide field of improvised duets in this sector of the music. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Strictly limited to 665 copies worldwide, this 2-LP set has been scrupulously mastered from the original tape, preserving both the high gloss and the brutal physicality of the recording. Plates cut by Sterling Sound's Grammy®-winning mastering master Steve Fallone have been pressed into virgin vinyl at QRP, and wrapped in a hand-numbered Old Style Tip-On® gatefold jacket that Stoughton has perfected. The package also includes a new contextualizing essay by historian Ben Young, hitherto-unpublished photographs from the collaboration, and artifacts reproduced from the original release plans. Bill Dixon conceived this as a deluxe digital release; Triple Point is honored to bring Duets to vinyl reality in the 21st Century. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt; & quot;Listening to abstract music isn't for everybody. But for those who go with flow of freely improvised & quot;jazz & quot; - performed with no written score and no rehearsal and absent the familiar touchstones of premeditated melody, harmony, and rhythm - this previous unissued meeting of two avant-garde giants is audio manna from heaven. Their (Taylor & amp; Dixon) very different stylistic approaches are pivotal to the pleasures of immersive listening to these 11 numbered pieces across two virgin vinyl LPs. Comparison to abstract impressionist painting is appropriate, but the music's constant movement evokes even more the spontaneous synchronicity of huge swells in the ocean - Dixon's sustaned notes, legato lines, and echoing electronic effects, recessed deep in the mix - and seemingly random sparkles of light on the surface - Taylor's jittery, splashing notes, altogether mesmerizing and sublime. & quot; & lt;/strong & gt; - Derk Richardson, The Absolute Sound, February 2020 & lt;/p & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Hand-Numbered, Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Strictly Limited to Only 665 Copies & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Double LP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Entirely previously unissued studio recordings & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Scrupulously mastered from the original tape & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Plates cut by Sterling Sound's Steve Fallone & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Pressed on virgin vinyl at QRP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Stoughton Old Style Tip-On gatefold jacket & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Previously unpublished photos & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; New essay by Ben Young & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Artifacts reproduced from the original release plans & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Bill Dixon, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Cecil Taylor, piano & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1.
