& amp;#8226; Best Jazz Vocal Album: Secrets Are The Best Stories & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;/header & gt;
& lt;p & gt;Secrets Are The Best Stories is the album from acclaimed vocalist and Grammy-winning artist Kurt Elling featuring renowned pianist Danilo P & amp;#233;rez. Secrets Are The Best Stories is set to be a career-defining album for Kurt, confirming his trajectory on a new and evolving path of artistic excellence, and further exploring the passion and the messages, political, personal, that inspire him. Here, Elling adds evocative new lyrics to compositions by greats like P & amp;#233;rez's iconic collaborator Wayne Shorter, late fusion bass genius Jaco Pastorius, and visionary composer/arranger Vince Mendoza, and to pieces from P & amp;#233;rez's own catalogue. Along with his own compelling narratives, Elling adapts the works of contemporary poets Franz Wright and Robert Bly, the 19th century abolitionist poet Frances E.W. Harper and Nobel-winning author Toni Morrison.
& lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;
Ever since Kurt Elling burst on to the global scene 25 years ago, he has been developing the sound and command of his vocal instrument into one of the most recognizable in the music. A combination of richness in intent, of soulfulness and of signature expression define him as an artist. Secrets Are The Best Stories translates an artistic vision of history, mystery, and storytelling into a musical message both singular and deep.

Chris Potter There Is A Tide LP (Vinyl)
& lt;header & gt;
& lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt;New Vinyl LP by Jazz Multi-Instrumentalist Chris Potter! & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;/header & gt;
& lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt;TAS Rated 5/5 Music, 4.5/5 Sonics in the February 2021 Issue of The Absolute Sound! & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;It's a year no one will forget, a year in which the global lockdown was shared by all, and yet experienced in a million different ways. For Chris Potter, a musician who has been on the road continuously since the 1990s, whose raison d' & amp;#234;tre is playing
live, lockdown presented both a challenge and an opportunity. It's a tribute to his creativity, personal integrity and huge musical talent that Chris was able to take on this challenge and make something unbelievably fresh from the opportunity. Starting
in May 2020, as the Black Lives Matter movement was kicking off (reflected in the track 'I Had A Dream'), Chris set out to create something alone, to express his reaction to these chaotic times. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;Playing each and every instrument: piano, keyboards, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, drums, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, alto flute, percussion, samples and of course saxophones, Chris took just six weeks to complete the whole process. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;This new album uniquely features Chris playing on all instruments - it's his Lockdown album. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;blockquote cite= & quot;www.theabsolutesound.com & quot; & gt;
Various instruments float in and out of the mix before falling into tight unisons on the buoyant and engaging opening track, 'I Had a Dream.' The song features Potter channeling his inner Sonny Rollins on a potent, melodic improvisation on tenor before he summons up Shorter on a soaring soprano solo in the second half of the piece. The African-flavored 12/8 'Mother of Waters,' which has him laying down an entrancing groove on kalimba, Fender Rhodes, and juju-inspired guitar lines, serves as a launching pad for a smoking soprano solo while the angular funk of 'Rising Over You' has him ripping on soprano and tenor saxes. Other highlights include his bass clarinet and flute showcase, 'Drop Your Anchor Down,' the guitar-driven 'Beneath the Waves,' and the mellow lullaby, 'Rest Your Head.'

Ben Wendel High Heart LP (Vinyl)

& lt;p & gt;High Heart is the fifth album by Ben Wendel. Interest in the US saxophonist and composer has surged in recent years, and the new album is a definitive statement of where he stands in his career and as one of the finest musicians of his generation. The
album is a personal statement and a reflection on his own journey through a society of increasing complexity, over-saturation, and social imbalance. It is an a

Ben Wendel has given us a standout album that is at once challenging, inspiring, and an advance - but most importantly, one that lives up to its title.

By incorporating Michael Mayo's wordless vocals into the mix and including two superb keyboardists, Shai Maestro and Gerald Clayton, Wendel creates an ethereal backdrop for his brawny tenor to sail over, as on the stirring title track, the ominous 'Fearsome'
and the minimalist and moody 'Darling.' Wendel's tenor lays out entirely on the atmospheric 'Less' and the hymn-like 'Traveler.' But he flaunts raging chops on the edgy, angular, chops-busting workout 'Burning Bright,' the suite-like 'Kindly,' and
the kinetic funk-fusion of 'Drawn Away,' all of which have him locked in tight, tricky unisons with Mayo's voice.

& lt;p & gt;New Gospel Revisited is the new album from the fearless and formidable American composer and trumpeter Marquis Hill. A live recording that revisits and reinterprets his debut 2012 album New Gospel, this time round employing a band of super-heavyweight
musicians including & lt;strong & gt;Walter Smith III, Joel Ross, James Francies, Kendrick Scott & lt;/strong & gt; and & lt;strong & gt;Harish Raghavan. & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;Marquis Hill's rise over the last few years has been striking and there's no letting up. Since winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Composition award he has demonstrated full command of his art and built a reputation for synthesizing
what he describes as the essential elements of the African-American creative heritage including contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R & amp;B, house and neo-soul. Now, his sights are set even higher. New Gospel Revisited is an extraordinary live recording
that reimagines his debut as a leader with a new band, a new focus and a sharpened ear as a bandleader, composer and performer. The set is breathtakingly good with a band that sounds as inventive and creative as it reads on paper. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt; & quot; & lt;strong & gt;...New Gospel was my debut album and my first completed production. To revisit this music in a fresh way, with a new band has been uniquely invigorating - and hugely rewarding. & lt;/strong & gt; & quot; - Marquis Hill & lt;/p & gt;

Chris Potter Sunrise Reprise LP (Maroon Marbled Vinyl)
& lt;header & gt;
& lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt;Second Circuits Trio Album Pressed On Maroon Marbled Vinyl LP! & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;/header & gt;
& lt;p & gt;One of the most prolific improvisers of his generation returns with the follow up to his 2019 Circuits album: a powerful and cathartic record featuring keyboardist James Francies and drummer Eric Harland. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;A potent improvisor and the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's Jazzpar Prize, Potter's impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sideman appearances on over 100 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for his solo work on & quot;In
Vogue & quot;, a track from Joanne Brackeen's 1999 album Pink Elephant Magic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan's Grammy-winning album from 2000, Two Against Nature. He has performed or recorded with many of the leading names in jazz, such as Herbie
Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;Since bursting onto the New York scene in 1989 as an 18-year-old prodigy with bebop icon Red Rodney (who himself had played as a young man alongside the legendary Charlie Parker), Potter has steered a steady course of growth as an instrumentalist and
composer-arranger. Through the '90s, he continued to gain invaluable bandstand experience as a sideman while also making strong statements as a bandleader-composer-arranger. Acclaimed outings like 1997's Unspoken (with bassist and mentor Dave Holland,
drummer Jack DeJohnette and guitarist John Scofield), 1998's Vertigo, 2001's Gratitude and 2002's Traveling Mercies showed a penchant for risk-taking and genre-bending. & quot;For me, it just seemed like a way of opening up the music to some different things
that I had been listening to but maybe hadn't quite come out in my music before, & quot; he explains. & lt;/p & gt;
& lt;p & gt;For more than two decades, Potter's limitless creativity, effortless virtuosity and vibrant sense of swing has wowed critics, musicians and fans alike, who cite him as one of the most influential saxophonists and inventive improvisers of the modern day,
a status that his first album for Edition, Circuits (2019) only enhanced. Chris has also collaborated with Dave Holland and Zakir Hussein on their Crosscurrents project Good Hope (2019). & lt;/p & gt;
