Fire and ebony. Fury and pride. Wearing its signature colors proudly and raising its exclamation point high, Impulse! Records was the go-to label for music that harnessed the searching and political stand-taking of the Sixties. Launched in 1961, Impulse grew to become an inherent part of the era's velocity as well as its volume, pulling jazz into the age of Black Power, Afrocentricity, and Spiritual Expansion. In its balance of tradition and transition, it bridged the golden age of jazz, that brief window from the late Fifties to the Seventies when players representing every jazz era were alive and active - from Louis Armstrong to Albert Ayler, from the legends of lore to a new generation of energy players. Impulse treated all its musicians as innovators, revolutionaries even - from swing and bebop, to free and Afrofuturist. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;The performances on Impulse Records: Music, Message and the Moment draw their staying power from a wide embrace of styles and sounds, as well as a tight focus on a historic moment when the promise of change was in the air and the message of racial harmony was in the music. Today that music has lost none of its relevance: the promise still deferred, the message still on time. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;quote source & quot; & gt; ...A collection celebrating Impulse's deep-digging support of artists who scored We The People's SingFight-ing for social political and artists' self-determination in a critical time of beatdowns, breakthroughs and cosmically-centered aspirations. & lt;footer & gt; -Musician/Essayist Greg Tate & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;quote source & quot; & gt; In many ways, this collection is a mural in sound of the activist's stimulation of the Sixties and Seventies...we need this scope of sound again: We need the horns to scream of stout resistance, and we need the bands to sing to us of the righteous beauty of our souls. & lt;footer & gt; -Journalist/Author A.B. On this third studio album, they bring a genre defying approach that celebrates the restless exploration of identity within the Caribbean diaspora within the U.K. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The genre defying album, Your Queen is a Reptile, was recorded in London with a host of guests spanning the breadth of the U.K. scene including jungle legend Congo Natty and poet Joshua Idehen. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;www.stereophile.com & quot; & gt; Young British saxophonist/bandleader Shabaka Hutchings is the main force behind these incendiary Sons of Kemet compositions, which are intended to remind listeners how British history reflects classist hierarchies and not the diasporic experience of its black immigrants. The album's title alludes humorously to the Reptilian conspiracy theory, but track titles allude humorlessly to who the Queen of England is not. The compositions, which are anchored in Afro-Caribbean rhythms, suggest in their titles alternative queens like Harriet Tubman and Angela Davis. If you have big speakers, my favorite track, 'My Queen Is Nanny of the Maroons,' will pound your room with wall-bending deep bass. & lt;footer & gt; -Herb Reichert, Stereophile Magazine Record To Die For 2021 & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Double LP & lt;br & gt; • Gatefold jacket & lt;br & gt; • Limited time digital download card & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Shabaka Hutchings, saxophone & lt;br & gt; Theon Cross, tuba & lt;br & gt; Tom Skinner, drums & lt;br & gt; Eddie Hick, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Charlie Watts Meets the Danish Radio Big Band 2LP (Vinyl)
& lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Double LP! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Charlie Watts meets the Danish Radio Big Band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. In the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like Oliver Nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. The truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; In 2010, Gerard Presencer arranged a 50th year reunion of sorts of drummer Charlie Watts and Copenhagen. After only 4 days rehearsal, Watts and The Danish Radio Big Band played a concert at the newly opened Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen - this concert was recorded for broadcast by the Danish National Radio. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Charlie Watts and the band were joined by Watts' long-time friend and bassist Dave Green, which turned out to be an essential ingredient since the two had a psychic connection while playing. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The album contains seven tracks including Presencer arrangements of two songs composed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, & quot;Paint It Black & quot; and & quot;You Can't Always Get What You Want & quot;. & quot;Faction & quot; is based on another classic by the Rolling Stones. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Double LP & lt;br & gt; • Made in the Czech Republic & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP 1 & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. And the rave reviews which appeared in the magazines Downbeat, Jazz Hot, Jazz Podium and Swingjournal reflected this: critics all over the world, in America, Europe and Japan recognized that Coltrane's deep religious belief had influenced both his approach to life and his music-making. It not only enabled him to express himself with great intensity but also lent him the necessary inner peace to conceive a work of almost 40 minutes in length and to lead his quartet along the same path as himself. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; A Love Supreme is considered John Coltrane's most important recording. Critics all over the world recognized that his deep religious belief had influenced both his approach to life and his music making. This work of great discipline and spiritual beauty forever changed the face of jazz. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Two important things happened to Coltrane in 1957: The saxophonist left Miles Davis' employ to join Thelonious Monk's band and hit new heights in extended, ecstatic soloing. Coltrane also kicked heroin addiction, a vital step in a religious awakening that climaxed with this legendary album-long hymn of praise. The indelible four-note theme of the first movement, & quot;Acknowledgment, & quot; is the humble foundation of the suite. But Coltrane's majestic, often violent blowing (famously described as & quot;sheets of sound & quot;) is never self-aggrandizing. Aloft with his classic quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, drummer Elvin Jones), Coltrane soars with nothing but gratitude and joy. You can't help but go with him. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - www.rollingstone.com & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Includes McCoy Tyner, Jimmie Garrison and Elvin Jones. John Coltrane was an instrumentalist of such overwhelming emotional force and virtuosity that although he died in 1967 his musical legacy remains virtually undiminished over 20 years. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; McCoy Tyner, piano & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Garrison, bass & lt;br & gt; Elvin Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The album is a delightful mix of techniques in arrangement and performance, with all of the musicians delivering terrific work. Haynes' drumming is absolutely wonderful here, lightly dancing around the other instruments; Flanagan's piano playing is equally light and delicate; Grimes' bass work is outstanding (during 'Raoul' you have a chance to hear one of the few bowed bass solos on records of that era); and there's no more to be said about Kirk's sax and flute work that hasn't been said a hundred times, apart from the fact that the flute solos on 'Snap Crackle' help this cut emerge as particularly outstanding. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - AllMusic & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Vital Vinyl series: Original label, original tapes, original sound & amp; design & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Made in Czech Republic & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes, drums & lt;br & gt; Henry Grimes, bass & lt;br & gt; Tommy Flanagan, piano & lt;br & gt; Roland Kirk, tenor saxophone, flute & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at QRP! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; In 1963, John Coltrane recorded a studio album that has remained unknown and unheard until now. The album was recorded at Van Gelder Studios, the & quot;Abbey Road & quot; of Jazz, with Coltrane’s Classic Quartet and at the height of his career. The music on this album represents one of the most influential groups in music history performing in a musical style it had perfected and reaching in new, exploratory directions that would affect the trajectory of jazz from then on. In short, this is the holy grail of jazz. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Unknown until 2004 and unheard until now, these recordings by the John Coltrane Quartet are, as Sonny Rollins says in the liner notes, & quot;like finding a new room in the Great Pyramid. & quot; Featuring the Classic Quartet – John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones – and recorded at the end of a two-week run at Birdland, the music on this album represents one of the most influential groups in music history both performing in a musical style it had perfected. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;If you heard the John Coltrane Quartet live in the early-to-mid-1960s, you were at risk of having your entire understanding of performance rewired. This was a ground-shaking band, an almost physical being, bearing a promise that seemed to reach far beyond music. The quartet's relationship to the studio, however, was something different. In the years leading up to A Love Supreme, his explosive 1965 magnum opus, Coltrane produced eight albums for Impulse! Records featuring the members of his so-called classic quartet - the bassist Jimmy Garrison, the drummer Elvin Jones and the pianist McCoy Tyner - but only two of those, Coltrane and Crescent, were earnest studio efforts aimed at distilling the band's live ethic. But now that story needs a major footnote. On Friday, Impulse! will announce the June 29 release of 'Both Directions at Once: The Lost Album,' a full set of material recorded by the quartet on a single day in March 1963, then eventually stashed away and lost. The family of Coltrane's first wife, Juanita Naima Coltrane, recently discovered his personal copy of the recordings, which she had saved, and brought it to the label's attention. There are seven tunes on this collection, a well-hewed mix that clearly suggests Coltrane had his sights on creating a full album that day. From the sound of it, this would have been an important one. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - The New York Times & lt;a href= & quot;https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/07/arts/music/john-coltrane-lost-album-both-directions-at-once.html & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#0000FF & quot; & gt;Read more! & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/a & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Considering the mileage that Coltrane's labels have gotten churning through his well-documented discography, any unheard material from this legendary artist would be newsworthy enough. But these early takes on tracks that would end up on later albums and the untitled, never-before-issued tunes are remarkable, and a continued exploration of the modal jazz ideas that would mark his classics Impressions and My Favorite Things. This collection is another brilliant and colorful flash from a quartet that was creating lightning with no small of sweat and gritted teeth exertion. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Paste Magazine & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Pressed at Quality Record Pressings & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Newly discovered studio recording & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; LP jacket features die-cut front and back cover, with debossed lettering on front and back & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane & lt;br & gt; McCoy Tyner & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Garrison & lt;br & gt; Elvin Jones & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. John Coltrane Blue World LP (Vinyl)
& lt;header & gt; & lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt;Previously Unreleased 1964 Recording On Vinyl LP! & lt;br & gt; Pressed at Quality Record Pressings! & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;/header & gt; & lt;p & gt;This unreleased and never-before-heard 1964 recording by John Coltrane and his Classic Quartet, Blue World, features new recordings of earlier works which, in an almost unprecedented move, they reinterpreted for this session, recorded at Van Gelder Studios. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;The recordings were made in June 1964, in between the sessions for Crescent and A Love Supreme. Coltrane had been approached by a filmmaker in Quebec, Gilles Groux, who was planning to make his film Le chat dans le sac, a love story set in Montreal that had political overtones. Groulx was a devoted Coltrane aficionado, and via his connection with bassist Jimmy Garrison, he approached the great jazz figurehead with the idea of Coltrane recording the film's soundtrack. Remarkably, he agreed. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;So it was that he went into the studio with Garrison, Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner to revisit and reinterpret some of Coltrane's earlier works. The session was recorded on quarter-inch analog mono tape and mixed by the great jazz engineer Rudy Van Gelder on 24 June. Groulx, who had been present at the session, took the masters to Canada to use in Le chat dans le sac, but only included ten minutes from the 37-minute recording. Devotees and new admirers will hear both Coltrane's creative progression and the consistent, interactive sound that had become the signature of the Classic Quartet by 1964. The album is also a window into a fascinating and hugely significant period in Coltrane's musical evolution, set in between two of his most transcendent recordings. Crescent was released in July, and A Love Supreme the following January. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;Kevin Reeves at Universal Music Mastering in New York has now remastered Blue World from the original analog tape. The lacquers for the new release were cut at Capitol Studios by Ron McMaster. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;www.analogplanet.com & quot; & gt; Both Directions At Once captured Coltrane in 1963, one day before the John Coltrane & amp; Johnny Hartman session. On that release, there are several takes of his current compositions such as 'Impressions' as well as two untitled, previously unreleased compositions. In my review, I found it to be a decent enough album, but one that didn’t live up to the hype. Blue World, however, may not be hyped enough... On this set, Coltrane's 'Classic Quartet' of himself, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones is in top form; although not significantly breaking new ground, at every turn they offer fresh innovations on the older material. Whereas Coltrane's Atlantic sessions, especially in the first half of his tenure there, featured whichever musicians were available, the Classic Quartet had been together for two years prior to the Blue World session. Inevitably, it was a far tighter unit than Trane's previous groups; they sensed each other's forthcoming moves and musically pushed each other forward. While that excellent cohesion has always been easily recognized, comparing the Blue World takes (specifically those of 'Naima,' one of his most performed, and therefore altered, songs) to the compositions' original recordings truly highlights its importance in Coltrane's Impulse!-era sound, specifically his musical boundary-breaking... The LP, despite being sourced from a mono mix intended for an optical film soundtrack sounds excellent. Cut from the Kevin Reeves-mastered 192/24 file by Ron McMaster, the sound is three-dimensional, clean, and lively. Coltrane's tenor comes through clearly and fluidly, Jimmy Garrison's bass is appropriately thick and muscular, Elvin Jones' drums create a large reverberation through Van Gelder Studios, and while not miked the best, McCoy Tyner's piano sound gets the job done... Overall, this archival session's release is a win for Ume's recently revitalized Impulse! sector. & lt;footer & gt; -Malachi Lui, Analog Planet, Music 9/11, Sound 9/11 & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;quote source & quot; & gt; It is remarkable to hear, 52 years after his death on July 17, 1967, a 'new' studio recording by legendary tenor saxophonist John Coltrane and his fabled quartet with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. But for Trane fans and completists, this is a veritable treasure trove... While the group's renditions of 'Naima' and 'Village Blues' convey a warm, relaxed feel, the expansive 'Traneing In' (the oldest cut here, being the title track from Coltrane's 1957 Prestige album with the Red Garland Trio) really takes off in scintillating fashion. Following a lengthy opening bass solo by Garrison, the band kicks in at the 2:51 mark, triggering some mid-tempo, swinging interaction from Garrison, Tyner and Jones until the leader enters at the 5:05 mark, his robust tenor tones filling the air in gutsy, glorious fashion for the next 2:33. The calm after that invigorating storm is their second take on the serene 'Naima,' named for the saxophonist's first wife. Drummer Jones offers some rhythmic variation from his usual alluring brushwork on this tune by switching to sticks and turning the beat around in eccentric ways at the outset, offering some atypical tension and uncharacteristic swinging energy on this otherwise sublime anthem... The title track, Coltrane's moody, modal contrafact on Harold Arlen's 'Out of This World,' is essentially the same heightened treatment that the sax great delivered on his stunning re-imaginings of 'My Favorite Things' and 'Chim Chim Cher-ee,' and provides some of the most freewheeling, pulse-quickening stretching of the set while offering a portend of thigns to come on A Love Supreme. While this lone track would no doubt be readily embraced by ardent fans of avant-garde jazz, the others on this exceptional set, especially all three takes of the earthy 'Village Blues' and 'Traneing In,' might be more palatable to mainstream fans. & lt;footer & gt; -Bill Milkowski, The Absolute Sound, January 2020 , Music 4.5/5, Sonics 4.5/5 & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;features & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Features & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;ul & gt; & lt;li & gt;Vinyl LP & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;All tracks previously unreleased & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Recorded, mixed & amp; mastered by Rudy Van Gelder at Van Gelder Studios on June 24, 1964 & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Re-mastered from the original analog tape by Kevin Reeves at Universal Music Mastering & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Original 1/4 & quot; analog mono tapes were used for all tracks & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Lacquers cut by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Pressed at Quality Record Pressings & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ul & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;musicians & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Musicians & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;table & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;John Coltrane & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;tenor saxophone & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;McCoy Tyner & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;piano & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Jimmy Garrison & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;bass & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Elvin Jones & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;drums & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;/table & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;selections & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Selections & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side A: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Naima (Take 1) & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Village Blues (Take 2) & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Blue World & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Village Blues (Take 1) & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side B: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Village Blues (Take 3) & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Like Sonny & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Traneing In & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Naima (Take 2) & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;/section & gt;

After somehow securing Monk's services to perform on Sunday, October 27, Scher initially had trouble selling tickets and convincing people that Monk was even going to show up. With many twists and turns along the way and several hundred people in the school's parking lot awaiting Monk's arrival before purchasing tickets, the concert eventually happened and was a triumph in more ways than Monk or Scher could have imagined. This is a recording of that historic event. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;Now available on Vinyl - includes 2 booklets and a poster. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt; & quot;Monk's quartet gave the racially mixed, near-capacity audience an excellent show. They played for over an hour. Monk was called back by thunderous applause to play an encore - a solo piano rendition of 'Sweetheart Of All My Dreams' - and then graciously apologized for not playing another one: 'I gotta play in the city tonight, dig?'... Neither Thelonious nor sixteen-year-old Danny Scher fully grasped what this concert meant for race relations in the area. For one beautiful afternoon, blacks and whites, Palo Alto and East Palo Alto, buried the hatchet and gathered together to hear 'Blue Monk,' 'Well You Needn't,' and 'Don't Blame Me.' & quot; & lt;/strong & gt; - Excerpt from Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original by Robin Kelley & lt;/p & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;quote source & quot; & gt; 'Palo Alto' captures a band hitting a high note. & lt;footer & gt; -New York Times & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;www.pitchfork.com & quot; & gt; This is exuberant, abundant music, made by and performed for people whose lives often felt anything but. & lt;footer & gt; -Marty Sartini Garner, Pitchfork, 9.1/10 & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;a name= & quot;SS & quot; & gt; & lt;/a & gt; & lt;iframe width= & quot;560 & quot; height= & quot;315 & quot; src= & quot;https://www.youtube.com/embed/5gQvoinczlw & quot; frameborder= & quot;0 & quot; allowfullscreen & gt; & lt;/iframe & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;features & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Features & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;ul & gt; & lt;li & gt;Vinyl LP & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Gatefold jacket & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Replicas of the original concert program and poster & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Hi-res rare images of Monk and band & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ul & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;musicians & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Musicians & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;table & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Thelonious Monk & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;piano & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Charlie Rouse & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;tenor saxophone & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Larry Gales & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;bass & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Ben Riley & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;drums & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;/table & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;selections & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Selections & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side A: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Ruby, My Dear & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Well, You Needn't & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side B: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Don't Blame Me & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Blue Monk & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Epistrophy & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;I Love You Sweetheart Of All My Dreams & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;/section & gt;

Ted Poor You Already Know LP (Vinyl)
& lt;header & gt; & lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt;Acclaimed Jazz Drummer On Vinyl LP Featuring Andrew D'Angelo, Blake Mills & amp; Andrew Bird! & lt;br & gt; Plated & amp; Pressed at QRP! & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;/header & gt; & lt;p & gt;You Already Know, the New Deal/Impulse! debut from the acclaimed drummer Ted Poor - & quot;a trustworthy engine in countless modern-jazz settings, & quot; per the New York Times - isn't your typical jazz drummer's recording, almost defiantly so. But if you're at all familiar with the Seattle-based Poor's explorative career - or the wide-ranging work of his principal collaborators here, the deeply influential guitarist-producer & lt;strong & gt;Blake Mills & lt;/strong & gt; and the saxophonist & lt;strong & gt;Andrew D'Angelo & lt;/strong & gt; - this should come as no surprise. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;After all, Poor has proven equally brilliant in bands led by the visionary avant-jazz trumpeter Cuong Vu and the lauded indie singer-songwriter & lt;strong & gt;Andrew Bird & lt;/strong & gt;. Whether he's on a club bandstand alongside a generation-defining improviser like the guitarist Ben Monder, or onstage at New York's historic Town Hall, backing Paul Simon as part of Chris Thile's trusted Live From Here band, Poor is a music-first drummer. His tremendous technical abilities behind the kit are inarguable - and no doubt serve him well as the Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle - but he places color, texture, sound and especially melody atop chops. & lt;strong & gt; & quot;The songs that I write, and certainly the songs that appear on this record, are songs you can sing, & quot; & lt;/strong & gt; Poor says, explaining how his time in the employ of renowned singer-songwriters has informed his own composing. & lt;strong & gt; & quot;These are the songs I sing to myself as well. & quot; & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;For that reason, the minimalist You Already Know is a supremely listenable improviser's album, with an artful crossover appeal. It's easy to imagine it existing on the same inquisitive music fan's record shelf alongside LPs by other Poor collaborators - say, the keyboardist-producer Mitchell Froom, or the singer-songwriter wunderkind Madison Cunningham, whose recent Verve Forecast release, Who Are You Now, features Poor. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;Take Poor's & quot;Only You, & quot; which boasts a loosely propulsive, almost trip-hoppy rhythm - & quot;my beat, & quot; as Poor calls it, chuckling - and long, true streams of melody from D'Angelo. (A critic's favorite among current jazz alto saxophonists, D'Angelo is no doubt an Ornette Coleman disciple, and that influence is communicated beautifully and directly here.) & quot;It is very repetitive; it's very simple, & quot; Poor says of & quot;Only You & quot;. & quot;But there is a form and attention and emotion that grows out of that. And I love how all of the details - in the way that Andrew articulates his melody, and the intricacies of the drum part - have no choice but to be vaulted to the forefront of the sound. & quot; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;D'Angelo's composition & quot;New Wonder & quot; is another highlight among the album's nine tracks, touting a & quot;drum melody in which the beat has a form itself, & quot; Poor explains. Again, D'Angelo's elegant delivery of an infectious melody is remarkably slippery; you don't realize how meticulous his approach is because the sheer tunefulness of his playing strikes first. & quot;Andrew is such a dynamic player, & quot; says Poor, who met the saxophonist around 15 years ago, when both were stalwarts on New York's avant-jazz scene. & quot;His relationship to rhythm is so personal and special. & quot; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt; & quot;New Wonder & quot; is also indicative of the stealthy sonic inventiveness that runs throughout You Already Know. During the album's sessions at Los Angeles' legendary Sound City Studios, Poor recorded D'Angelo's melody on piano via the studio's echo chamber but then removed the actual piano sound later on; the results resembled what Poor calls a & quot;shimmery halo & quot; of reverb and space. One of the project's most affecting tracks, & quot;To Rome & quot;, homes in on Poor's melodic ingenuity behind the kit (and piano), and features Andrew Bird on violin and Blake Mills on guitar. On & quot;United & quot;, a judiciously used overdubbed string section, courtesy of Rob Moose, fleshes out the duo ambience, and that newfound orchestral dimension pushes the album closer to chamber pop or contemporary classical than to any jazz-with-strings exercise. Throughout, inspired mixing by David Boucher (Andrew Bird, Randy Newman, Pixar) and mastering by Eric Boulanger (Neil Young, Rufus Wainwright, Green Day) grant the jazz-inspired project new angles in sound that come only with adventurous rock and pop studio experience. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;An invaluable part of the album's smart, streamlined design can be attributed to producer Mills, the 33-year-old polymath and an heir to super-producer-musicians like Ry Cooder and Don Was. In fact, the very existence of You Already Know belongs to Poor's relationship with Mills. The two met and clicked in 2014, during the sessions for Bird's album Are You Serious, and began hanging out and playing together whenever Poor would visit Los Angeles. During one of those hangs, Poor played some working recordings of his duets with D'Angelo, and Mills was thrilled by them. The inception of New Deal, Mills' own imprint through Verve/Universal Music, set the wheels in motion. & quot;I was really appreciative of how reserved Blake was in his choices as a producer, & quot; Poor says. & quot;There would often be times where I wanted to do more and more, or leave an element in longer, such as the strings or the piano. And Blake was very conscious of keeping the ear's focus on the main two instruments, and to get in and out as quickly as possible with the other stuff. & quot; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;In some fashion, You Already Know is no different than the many gorgeous folk- and Americana-tinged singer-songwriter albums Mills has helmed. It's a folk album, but & quot;not the genre of folk, & quot; Poor says. & quot;It's more the idea of music as oral tradition - music as song. & quot; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;a name= & quot;SS & quot; & gt; & lt;/a & gt; & lt;iframe width= & quot;560 & quot; height= & quot;315 & quot; src= & quot;https://www.youtube.com/embed/yrapn_9a1kM & quot; frameborder= & quot;0 & quot; allowfullscreen & gt; & lt;/iframe & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;features & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Features & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;ul & gt; & lt;li & gt;Vinyl LP & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Plated and pressed at Quality Record Pressings & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ul & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;musicians & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Musicians & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;table & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Ted Poor & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;drums, percussion, piano, harmonium & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Andrew D'Angelo & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;alto saxophone & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Blake Mills & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;guitar, acoustic bass, piano, harmonium & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Sebastian Steinberg & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;acoustic bass & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Paul Kowert & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;acoustic bass & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Andrew Bird & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;violin & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Rob Moose & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;violin, viola, cello & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;/table & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;selections & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Selections & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side A: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Emilia & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Only You & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Kasia & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;To Rome & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side B: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;New Wonder & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;At Night & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;United & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Push Pull & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Reminder & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;/section & gt;

Alice Coltrane Kirtan: Turiya Sings 2LP (Vinyl)
& lt;header & gt; & lt;p & gt; & lt;strong & gt;1982 Spiritual Jazz Album Reissued On Double LP! & lt;/strong & gt; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;/header & gt; & lt;p & gt;Alice Coltrane is the undeniable godmother of spiritual jazz and an acknowledged influence on everyone from Flying Lotus and Kamasi Washington to Solange and Radiohead. Recorded in 1981 and never shared in this form with the world at large, Kirtan: Turiya Sings is a stunning collection of nine devotional songs, featuring the never-before-heard combination of Alice Coltrane's voice and organ. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;The original recording of these songs, Turiya Sings, was released exclusively on cassette in 1982 for the students of Alice's ashram. In addition to Alice's voice and organ, the recording included synthesizers, strings, and sound effects. In 2004, Alice's son and producer of this record, Ravi Coltrane, found mixes he'd never heard before of just Alice's voice and her Wurlitzer organ. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;Though known by many as the musical partner and wife of John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane is revered for her groundbreaking contributions to spiritual jazz with her legendary Impulse! recordings Journey In Satchidananda and Ptah, The El Daoud, among others. Throughout the 1970s, in addition to maintaining the busy schedule of a recording and touring artist, Alice Coltrane was immersing herself in Eastern philosophies, mythologies, and Vedic religious practices. By the early 1980s, she had become a guru and spiritual teacher and began to make music exclusively for her community at The Vedantic Center, northwest of Los Angeles. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;www.pitchfork.com & quot; & gt; These 1981 devotional recordings for voice and Wurlitzer, meant to guide meditation through chanting, offer an alternate version of the cosmic jazz visionary's synthesizer masterpiece, Turiya Sings... Like a great sacred text, the music of Kirtan: Turiya Sings is concentrated and rigorous, yet simple and full of ease. Like the original Turiya Sings, it's also a pleasure. & lt;footer & gt; -Jenn Pelly, Pitchfork, Best New Reissue, Rated: 8.5 & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;features & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Features & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;ul & gt; & lt;li & gt;Double LP & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Gatefold jacket & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ul & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;musicians & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Musicians & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;table & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Alice Coltrane & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;harp, organ, piano, vocals & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;/table & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;selections & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Selections & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side A: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Jagadishwar & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Jai Ramachandra & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Krishna Krishna & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side B: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Rama Katha & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Yamuna Tira Vihari & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side C: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Charanam & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Govinda Hari & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side D: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;Hara Siva & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Pranadhana & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ol & gt; & lt;/section & gt;

John Coltrane Both Directions At Once: The Lost Album Deluxe Edition 2LP (Vinyl)
& lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Lost 1963 Recording Finally Released! Deluxe Edition Double LP! & lt;br & gt; Includes Every Take From The Session! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Includes 7 alternate takes of the tracks from the standard edition. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Paste Magazine & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Deluxe Edition & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Double LP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Pressed at Quality Record Pressings & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Newly discovered studio recording & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Contains every take from the session, including 7 alternate takes & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Gatefold jacket featuring a die-cut front and back cover, with debossed lettering on front and back & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane & lt;br & gt; McCoy Tyner & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Garrison & lt;br & gt; Elvin Jones & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP1 & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Excellent musical and historical annotation add to the physical package's value as does the clean, quiet double 180g Optimal pressing quality. & lt;footer & gt; -Michael Fremer, Analog Planet, Music 8/11, Sound 7/11 & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;blockquote cite= & quot;www.pastemagazine.com & quot; & gt; Here's a rare case where the impact of the music being pressed to vinyl far outweighs the somewhat questionable sonics of the finished release. Discovered in the archives of the late musician Joe Brazil were tapes that featured a live recording of John Coltrane and an expanded backing band performing all of A Love Supreme at Seattle's The Penthouse in 1965. It is, to date, only the second known live recording of this monumental work of spiritual jazz. But unlike the many recent archival releases taken from live dates at the same venue, this wasn't recorded with broadcast quality in mind. Instead, the two microphones were set up close to McCoy Tyner's piano and Elvin Jones' drum kit. So the work of Coltrane, his fellow saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Carlos Ward and bassists Jimmy Garrison and Donald Rafael Garrett is muted - discernible but entirely overpowered by the splashy attack of Jones and Tyner's percussive flair. Does that matter? Yes and no. The whole recording plays like the bootleg it was, which might turn off some less patient listeners. But there's no denying that the power and generosity of the moment comes through. With some audible coaxing, Coltrane pulls something deep from within his fellow musicians, sending Sanders into a frenzy of desperate groans on 'Pursuance', giving Jones space for a six minute solo and parting the curtain for Ward, a young alto player early in his career, to shine. & lt;footer & gt; -Robert Ham, Paste Magazine & lt;/footer & gt; & lt;/blockquote & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;features & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Features & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;ul & gt; & lt;li & gt;Double LP & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Gatefold Jacket & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Booklet & lt;/li & gt; & lt;li & gt;Made in Germany & lt;/li & gt; & lt;/ul & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;musicians & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Musicians & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;table & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;John Coltrane & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;saxophone & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;McCoy Tyner & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;piano & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Jimmy Garrison & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;bass & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Elvin Jones & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;drums & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;tr & gt; & lt;th & gt;Pharoah Sanders & lt;/th & gt; & lt;td & gt;saxophone & lt;/td & gt; & lt;/tr & gt; & lt;/table & gt; & lt;/section & gt; & lt;section id= & quot;selections & quot; & gt; & lt;h3 & gt;Selections & lt;/h3 & gt; & lt;h4 & gt;Side A: & lt;/h4 & gt; & lt;ol & gt; & lt;li & gt;A Love Supreme, Pt.
