The Thelonious Monk Quartet Misterioso LP (Vinyl)
Reissue of this classic Thelonious Monk album is ideal for all Jazz and vinyl collectors. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; This album was recorded live at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City in August 1958 with Monk on piano, Johnny Griffin on sax, Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; There are re-workings of his earlier compositions (it should be axiomatic that Monk is a constantly self-renewing composer-arranger-musician, that each new recording of an & quot;old & quot; number, particularly with different personnel, represents a fresh view of it--almost a new composition). & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; There is one new piece: & quot;Blues Five Spot. & quot; As that title emphasizes, this album (like Thelonious In Action) was recorded on-the-spot during Monk's 1958 engagement at New York's coloful Five Spot Cafe. Thus there is also a brief unaccompanied version of a standard ( & quot;Just a Gigolo & quot;); characteristic of the way Thelonious opens most of his sets in a club. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The title selected for this album--Misterioso--is more than just the name of one of its numbers. It is an extremely Monk-like song title, evoking by its mild play on words (linking & quot;mist & quot; and & quot;mystery & quot;) another basic characteristic of his music at this or any other time, that feeling of challenge and depth that leads a writer like Gunther Schuller to describe Thelonious quite aptly as & quot;enigmatic and wonderful & quot;. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl Reissue & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Rainbo Records & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Thelonious Monk, piano & lt;br & gt; Johnny Griffin, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Ahmed Abdul-Malik, bass & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Thelonious Monk The Unique Thelonious Monk LP (Vinyl)
The Unique Thelonious Monk was the pianist's second during his remarkable five-year tenure on Riverside. His debut album for the label was the aptly titled Plays Duke Ellington and, once again on this disc, Monk's song selection did not feature any original compositions. Rather, the well-chosen standards included exemplify and help further establish the pianist and bandleader within the context of familiar melodies at the head of a trio - consisting of Oscar Pettiford and Art Blakey. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Thelonious Monk, piano & lt;br & gt; Oscar Pettiford, bass & lt;br & gt; Art Blakey, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. A consistently enthusiastic and balanced musical partnership, Bennett and Evans shine both individually and in tandem—Evans supporting Bennett with his steady left hand and then frequently diving into melodically inventive solos at the end of the phrase. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recorded in intimate sessions at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA, without even a bassist or drummer present, this album is the product of meticulous personal involvement by the two giants of their genres. Bennett and Evans selected the tunes, worked out the arrangements semi-spontaneously, and picked the final takes to be used. The result was a perfect jazz/pop crossover worthy of many repeat listens. A must-have on vinyl for any serious fan of either of these two greats. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;...an excellent jazz-pop hybrid in which both musicians were shown off to advantage. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; -William Ruhlman, allmusic.com & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Special 180g Vinyl Reissue & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Tony Bennett, vocals & lt;br & gt; Bill Evans, piano & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side One: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Sonny Rollins Quartet Tenor Madness LP (Vinyl)
By the time this LP was released, Sonny Rollins already had such albums under his name as Worktime and Sonny Rollins Plus 4, in addition to his sideman exploits with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Even the critics who had been slow in recognizing what fellow jazzmen already knew – that here was a young giant in our midst – could not help see the light. Tenor Madness, in which he was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated and underlined his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins’ playing attitudes with an intriguing original, “Paul’s Pal,” and the mining of unusual material such as “My Reverie” and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.” And, of course, there is the celebrated title track featuring the two titans to emerge in the Fifties, Rollins and his guest, visiting in the studio that day, John Coltrane. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Sonny Rollins, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The album turned out to be one of only two examples of how the Rollins edition of Brown/Roach sounded, and it is best remembered for featuring “Pent-Up House” and the pioneering jazz waltz “Valse Hot,” two Rollins originals that quickly became jazz standards. Sadly, these proved to be the final studio performances of trumpet giant Brown and pianist Richie Powell, whose deaths in a highway accident three months later brought an end to one of the signature jazz groups of the 1950s. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Sonny Rollins, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Clifford Brown, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Max Roach, drums & lt;br & gt; Richie Powell, piano & lt;br & gt; George Morrow, bass & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side One: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Kenny Dorham Quiet Kenny LP (Vinyl)
Kenny Dorham's Quiet Kenny is one of the loveliest albums ever made by a trumpeter and a rhythm section. Recorded for the Prestige subsidiary New Jazz, the session is not entirely & quot;quiet”; while ballad readings of standards cast a late-night spell, Dorham's three tuneful blues originals, plus & quot;Mack the Knife, & quot; swing jauntily. Dorham (1924-1972) had worked as a sideman for such innovators as Charlie Parker, Max Roach, and Art Blakey before going solo. In his own sweet way, Dorham was a major figure during the 1950s and ’60s. If he was not as effervescent as Dizzy Gillespie, as mysterious as Miles Davis, or as given to skyrocketry as Clifford Brown, Dorham was an eloquent, soulful player with a beautifully understated tone. On Quiet Kenny, backed by the supple piano/bass/drums team of Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, and Arthur Taylor, Kenny Dorham is at his lyrical best. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Kenny Dorham, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Tommy Flanagan, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Arthur Taylor, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. McCoy Tyner is joined by Sonny Fortune, Calvin Hill and Alphonse Mouzon for this deceptively simple record employing four tunes from the band's regular repertoire and one solo piano piece. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; From the extraordinarily intense & quot;Ebony Queen & quot; through the ruminative solo & quot;A Prayer for My Family, the equally intense & quot;Rebirth, & quot; and the concluding, side-long title track, there's not a misstep to be heard. & quot;Sahara, & quot; over the course of its 23 minutes, covers vast ground, echoing the majesty and misery of the geographical area with percussion and flute interludes to some of Tyner's very best playing on record. Even something that could have resulted in a mere exercise in exotica, his koto performance on & quot;Valley of Life, & quot; exudes both charm and commitment to the form. Tyner would go on to create several fine albums in the mid-'70s, but never again would he scale quite these heights. This was Charles Mingus’s first recording with a working band of his own, issued on his own enterprising Debut label. The group was also the first to carry the Mingus Jazz Workshop banner. Recorded live, the music is among the earliest examples of the inspired interplay Mingus demanded from his musicians, and the unity of musical purpose he strived after. “Work Song” was the first Mingus composition with a socially conscious title and message. Max Roach, Mingus’ partner in the Debut venture, sits in for “Percussion Discussion,” a rousing duet (Mingus overdubbed a third part, played on piccolo bass). Barrow and Bert rise to the occasion, Waldron is already himself, and Jones, a Monk graduate, plays with taste and intelligence. He did so in the company of the esteemed rhythm section of bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke. The Miles Davis Quintet The New Miles Davis Quintet LP (Vinyl)
This is the first LP to be issued featuring the Miles Davis Quintet–a group that was to become one of the most influential small bands of the Fifties. It also introduced John Coltrane to the jazz public, launching him on his significant career. Davis’s singular mastery with a mute, exemplified on The Musings of Miles, is further emphasized, as is Red Garland’s penchant for picking “new” old standards for Miles. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Guaraldi's spry & quot;Ginza Samba & quot; kicks things off with nimble and imaginative statements by all the soloists. Tjader's swinging originals & quot;Crow's Nest & quot; and & quot;Big Bear & quot; provide prime solo vehicles as well, while his lovely waltz number & quot;Liz-Anne & quot; adds some nice contrast to the set, eliciting one of Getz's best solos in the process. The group rounds things out with fine ballad readings of & quot;I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face & quot; and & quot; For All We Know & quot;. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; This newly reissued vinyl addition is a ‘MUST HAVE’ title for for both Getz and Tjader fans. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Stan Getz: one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Cal Tjader: The legendary percussionist who is often linked to the development of Latin rock and acid jazz. Of Miles Davis’s many bands, none was more influential and popular than the quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. Davis’s muted ballads and medium-tempo standards endeared him to the public. The horns’ searing exposition of classics like “Salt Peanuts” and “Well, You Needn’t” captivated musicians. The famed extended recording sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet, wherein they taped the band’s basic repertoire (and what a marvelous mixture of jazz originals and standards) in the manner of nightclub sets rather than the repetition of the usual studio takes. Cookin’ was the first to be released and it excited listeners not only with its contents but with its promise of more to come. Davis, Coltrane, Garland, Chambers, and Philly Joe: one of the classic groups in the history of jazz. It established a level of excellence that was to foster a long, successive line of outstanding Davis quintets and sextets through the Fifties and Sixties. From the muted eloquence of “My Funny Valentine,” through the finger-poppin’ “Blues by Five,” to the urgent swing of “Airegin” and “Tune-Up,” Cookin’ has the ability to thrill the listener no matter how many times it is played–the mark of an all-time great performance. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Philly Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Charlie Parker attracted young musicians like a magnet. This 1959 release had a profound impact on jazz history and features Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Bill Evans made two albums in 1959 that had a profound impact on jazz history - Kind of Blue with Miles Davis and this debut disc by Evans' first permanent working unit. The fluidity and interdependence these three developed forever changed the face of the piano trio, introducing new notions of shading, balance, and poetic lyricism, not to mention the superhuman virtuosity of the tragically short-lived bassist Scott LaFaro. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Bill Evans, piano & lt;br & gt; Scott LaFaro, bass & lt;br & gt; Paul Motian, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Eric Dolphy Out There LP (Vinyl)
Dolphy’s second album as a leader is a departure from his first, Outward Bound, where he used a conventional front line (his alto with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard) albeit differently, in that by utilizing Ron Carter’s bowed cello as a second voice he achieves a chamber-like avant jazz. It was quite daring for its time and again spotlights Eric’s bass clarinet and flute as well as, on one number (“Eclipse,” a Charles Mingus composition), conventional clarinet. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; Eric Dolphy, alto sax, flute, Bb, bass clarinets & lt;br & gt; Ron Carter, cello & lt;br & gt; George Duvivier, bass & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Eric Dolphy & lt;br & gt; Ron Carter & lt;br & gt; George Duvivier & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The rhythm team of Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, who were with the Miles Davis quintet, was enhanced by the suave, swinging piano of Tommy Flanagan, at that time solidifying his growing reputation on the New York scene. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; This is the one-time chemistry of Burrell and Coltrane, the blend of guitar and tenor saxophone in a mix of original and standards; one of the latter, & quot; Why Was I Born, & quot; is a duet for the two principals. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Kenny Burrell, guitar & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Tommy Flanagan, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Cobb, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Charlie Parker Bird On 52nd Street LP (Vinyl)
A companion album to Bird at St. Nick’s, this was also taped on location by trombonist Jimmy Knepper. It comes, most likely, from the Three Deuces on New York’s famed “Swing Alley,” 52nd Street. The supporting case of trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Max Roach helped compromise the Charlie quintet but Jordan is heard in solo only briefly and Davis hardly at all. Tape was precious and Knepper saved the lion’s share for Bird. The standards and the originals are all here as only Parker could play on them, including a “Night in Tunisia” “break” and several versions of “52nd Street Theme.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Charlie Parke, alto & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Duke Jordan, piano & lt;br & gt; Tommy Potter, bass & lt;br & gt; Max Roach, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. 52nd Street Theme & lt;br & gt; 2. The Red Garland Trio Groovy LP (Vinyl)
Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist, and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles' group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads, and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Viny LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Arthur Taylor, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Dave Brubeck Quartet Jazz At Oberlin LP (Vinyl)
& lt;b & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt;A Must Buy for anyone who likes jazz music and Dave Brubeck! & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Dave Brubeck performs alongside Paul Desmond, Ron Crotty and Lloyd Davis. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Dubbed as Dave Brubeck's first of many live recordings issued from concert performances on college campuses, Jazz at Oberlin (Ohio, in the Finney Chapel) also takes to task the notion that his band was ineffably cool. Alto saxophonist Paul Desmond is on fire no matter the tempo, and asserts his post-Charlie Parker influence in a way that few of his follow-up recordings intimated. This is a straight reissue from the original album, clocking in at under 40 minutes, but full of the great musicianship that made the Brubeck/Desmond tandem so popular. It's a recording also notable for bassist Ron Crotty and drummer Lloyd Davis, never as highly regarded as when they were in this quartet. Desmond comes out of the box smokin' for & quot; These Foolish Things & quot; even though the band plays easy blues/swing, and really tears up bop versions of & quot;Perdido & quot; and & quot; The Way You Look Tonight. & quot; Only on the introduction of & quot; How High the Moon & quot; does Brubeck lead the way, deferring to his lead bandmate for most of this performance. Playing to a sophisticated, literate, academic crowd, the quartet appealed to these patrons to the extent that the pianist toured colleges exclusively for a time prior to the big hit & quot;Take Five & quot; becoming an iconic jazz staple. The Oberlin concert and LP release paved the way for the famous pair to perform prolifically throughout the decades of post-bop modern mainstream jazz. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Michael G. Newborn was all about amazing and dazzling piano runs that on some dates created simply too much flash and clutter to allow pieces to flow and breathe properly, but Haynes has always been about grace and flow throughout his career (if a drummer's style can be said to be elegant, Haynes fits the bill), and here he rubs off on Newborn, who exercises just enough restraint to keep him in the proper orbit, resulting in a fine album. Highlights include the easy, pure swing of the opener, a version of Ray Bryant's & quot;Reflection & quot;, a wonderful and bluesy rendition of Avery Parrish's & quot; After Hours & quot; (which finds Newborn in perfect balance between explosive ornamentation and smooth functionality), and a jaunty, fun spin through Newborn's own & quot;Sugar Ray & quot;, a tribute to boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. This trio had a brief recording career together, but as this solid set shows, they made the best of it. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Prestige Records 65th Anniversary Re-issue & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes, drums & lt;br & gt; Phineas Newborn, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chamber, bass & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The album is described as & quot;a slick, fluid, professional set of hard bop at its finest. & quot; (BBC) & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Art Blakey led many editions of his Jazz Messengers over more than three decades, but a strong argument can be made that the Messengers of his Riverside period constituted his strongest unit. With Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Curtis Fuller in the front line, with Cedar Walton and Reggie Workman as Blakey's rhythm-section mates, its combination of musicianship and sheer swinging force has rarely been equaled in a small band. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Caravan was the first of Blakey's Riverside albums and endures as a living monument to his nonpareil drumming and leadership. His solo on the title tune is one of the finest recorded examples of Blakey's unique melding of precision and power. Hubbard and Shorter contributed memorable compositions and, with Fuller and Walton, some of the greatest soloing of the 1960s. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This release can be considered definitive Blakey, bop, and Jazz Messengers. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; -Lindsay Planer, allmusic.com & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Prestige Records 65th Anniversary Re-issue & lt;br & gt; • 120g Vinyl Reissue & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Art Blakey, drums & lt;br & gt; Freddie Hubbard, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Curtis Fuller, trombone & lt;br & gt; Wayne Shorter, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Cedar Walton, piano & lt;br & gt; Reggie Workman, bass & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side One: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. John Coltrane Lush Life LP (Vinyl)
John Coltrane’s Prestige years began when he joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955. During the next few years, when he was either with Davis or the Thelonious Monk Quartet, he functioned as both leader and sideman for this label. These recordings document the first part of his relatively short but highly influential time in the spotlight. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Lush Life, a combination of standards and a blues, treated in the unique Coltrane manner– sound wedded to material in a completely personal way–contains three tracks without a piano. This is the first time he recorded in this manner, other than when Monk was “strolling,” and it offers another aspect from, and of, Trane. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Donald Byrd, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Earl May, bass & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Louis Hayes, drums & lt;br & gt; Alber & quot;Tootie & quot; Heath, drums & lt;br & gt; Arthur Taylor, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Special Merit: Informal & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Yusef Lateef’s interpolation into his music of traditions, modes, and instruments of Asia struck a sympathetic chord in the jazz audience. Perhaps its fascination lay in the apparently inextinguishable human need for mysticism, perhaps in the unending attraction of the sadness and beauty of minor keys. At any rate, there was considerable demand for Lateef’s many recordings of the late 1950s and early Sixties that reflected his fascination with things oriental. Eastern Sounds, in fact, was one of his best sellers. One of the warmest and most accessible soloists in jazz, Lateef is a master not only of conventional reed instruments but many unconventional ones. Here, using only tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, he generates mystery and exoticism. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Yusef Lateef, tenor sax, oboe, flute & lt;br & gt; Barry Harris, piano & lt;br & gt; Ernie Farrow, bass, rabat & lt;br & gt; Lex Humphries, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Miles Davis Quintet Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet LP (Vinyl)
Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet is in every way a masterpiece. When the trumpeter (1926-1991) had formed the band in 1955, his colleagues—tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones—were not considered jazz-world A-listers. And before conquering his narcotics addiction earlier in the Fifties, Davis had seen his once-promising career go into eclipse. By 1956, however, his sound, especially when muted, was an achingly personal counterpart to the vocals of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Relaxin’ (plus its Prestige companions, Miles, Cookin’, Workin’, and Steamin’) reestablished Davis, and elevated his quintet as the gold standard of small groups. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; With its accent on bright tempos, from medium-bounce to crisply up, Relaxin’ remains one of Davis’s sunniest outings, a prime example of one of the outstanding ensembles of the 20th century reaching the summit of their artistry. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Philly Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. More than 30 years ago Miles Davis recorded this music in the company of such other giants as Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, Percy Heath, Sonny Rollins, and Horace Silver. Today the music they made is regarded as classic. “Bags’ Groove,” in two versions, is a perfect illustration of the improvisatory process, and the various delights that can develop from take to take; the date with Rollins reveals his development toward major status. It is hard to believe that having heard these 1954 recordings, the critics could have called Davis’s triumph at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955 a “comeback.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Milt Jackson, vibes & lt;br & gt; Thelonious Monk, piano & lt;br & gt; Percy Heath, bass & lt;br & gt; Kenny Clarke, drums & lt;br & gt; Sonny Rollins, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Horace Silver, piano & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Miles Davis Quintet Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet LP (Vinyl)
Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan’s Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the third in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia and producing music of high energy and immediacy. Preceded by Cookin’ and Relaxin’, Workin’ is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, “Ahmad’s Blues.” The music this quintet made in the mid-Fifties period will live forever: the excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones; and Miles’ poignancy and intense swing. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Bill Evans Everybody Digs Bill Evans LP (Vinyl)
The legend of Bill Evans really begins with this album, his second. The pianist had just spent most of 1958 as part of one of the major units in jazz history: the Miles Davis Sextet that also featured John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. His fellow musicians already knew his worth (the album title was almost literally accurate, and the four endorsements on the cover, which embarrassed Bill, could easily have been greatly multiplied); with this record, the jazz public began to follow their lead. Aided by Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, Evans set down some of his most swinging trio sides, but the session would be memorable if it had only yielded the remarkable and haunting solo improvisation called “Peace Piece.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Bill Evans, piano & lt;br & gt; Sam Jones, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The sextet tracks with Sonny Rollins and Bennie Green were the first recordings Miles made after his affiliation with Capitol ended, a hiatus of approximately ten months. It began a long and fruitful association with Prestige, first in all-star contexts and, later, with the first of his regular quintets. Miles was battling personal problems in this period and also was not in favor with the critics. Some of them still thought of his tone and style as “a man walking on egg shells,” when, in reality, he was into a more popping, burning attack. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The 1953 tracks with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims (all compositions by Cohn) are in a more laid-back groove, striking a balance between the Capitol nonet and the fierce swing of the “Blue ‘n’ Boogie” with J.J.
