Beautifully rendered, & quot;Blue Monk & quot; is the highlight of the album, adventurously combining disharmonic riffs within a melodic and very memorable structure. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Monk's explorations conjure up images of a mathematician working out geometric patterns on the keyboard and evoke a sublime beauty as they build order out of chaos. The Miles Davis Quintet Workin' With The Miles Davis Quintet LP (Vinyl)
Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan’s Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the third in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia and producing music of high energy and immediacy. Preceded by Cookin’ and Relaxin’, Workin’ is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, “Ahmad’s Blues.” The music this quintet made in the mid-Fifties period will live forever: the excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones; and Miles’ poignancy and intense swing. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Red Garland Trio Groovy LP (Vinyl)
Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist, and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles' group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads, and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Viny LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Arthur Taylor, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. This is the first LP to be issued featuring the Miles Davis Quintet–a group that was to become one of the most influential small bands of the Fifties. It also introduced John Coltrane to the jazz public, launching him on his significant career. Davis’s singular mastery with a mute, exemplified on The Musings of Miles, is further emphasized, as is Red Garland’s penchant for picking “new” old standards for Miles. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Cannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco LP (Vinyl)
When Adderley joined the Riverside label, he was assured that his still-unformed band would be recorded promptly, whenever and wherever he felt ready. The quintet, featuring Nat Adderley and Bobby Timmons, was assembled in 1959 and the promise was kept that October at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop. The memorable result is heard here - one of the most exciting, influential, and successful 'live' recordings in modern jazz history. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Cannonball Adderley, alt sax & lt;br & gt; Nat Adderley, cornet & lt;br & gt; Bobby Timmons, piano & lt;br & gt; Sam Jones, bass & lt;br & gt; Louis Hayes, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Bill Evans Everybody Digs Bill Evans LP (Vinyl)
The legend of Bill Evans really begins with this album, his second. The pianist had just spent most of 1958 as part of one of the major units in jazz history: the Miles Davis Sextet that also featured John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley. His fellow musicians already knew his worth (the album title was almost literally accurate, and the four endorsements on the cover, which embarrassed Bill, could easily have been greatly multiplied); with this record, the jazz public began to follow their lead. Aided by Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones, Evans set down some of his most swinging trio sides, but the session would be memorable if it had only yielded the remarkable and haunting solo improvisation called “Peace Piece.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Bill Evans, piano & lt;br & gt; Sam Jones, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. When Riverside invited him to assemble his choice of an ideal small group, the Hawk picked an impressive cast that ran the gamut from modern (J.J. Thelonious Monk Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington LP (Vinyl)
Monk’s debut Riverside date, Keepnews decided to ease the pianist into what turned out to be his lengthy association with the label by asking him to momentarily set aside his own compositions and instead play Duke Ellington tunes. He did so in the company of the esteemed rhythm section of bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke. With his distinctively angular style, Monk nails Ellington’s best-known tunes such as “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing),” “Mood Indigo” and “Caravan.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Thelonious Monk, piano & lt;br & gt; Oscar Pettiford, bass & lt;br & gt; Kenny Clarke, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. These recordings document the first part of his relatively short but highly influential time in the spotlight. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Lush Life, a combination of standards and a blues, treated in the unique Coltrane manner– sound wedded to material in a completely personal way–contains three tracks without a piano. The Miles Davis Quintet Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet LP (Vinyl)
The famed extended recording sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet, wherein they taped the band’s basic repertoire (and what a marvelous mixture of jazz originals and standards) in the manner of nightclub sets rather than the repetition of the usual studio takes. Cookin’ was the first to be released and it excited listeners not only with its contents but with its promise of more to come. Davis, Coltrane, Garland, Chambers, and Philly Joe: one of the classic groups in the history of jazz. It established a level of excellence that was to foster a long, successive line of outstanding Davis quintets and sextets through the Fifties and Sixties. From the muted eloquence of “My Funny Valentine,” through the finger-poppin’ “Blues by Five,” to the urgent swing of “Airegin” and “Tune-Up,” Cookin’ has the ability to thrill the listener no matter how many times it is played–the mark of an all-time great performance. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Philly Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The Miles Davis Quintet Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet LP (Vinyl)
Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet is in every way a masterpiece. When the trumpeter (1926-1991) had formed the band in 1955, his colleagues—tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones—were not considered jazz-world A-listers. And before conquering his narcotics addiction earlier in the Fifties, Davis had seen his once-promising career go into eclipse. By 1956, however, his sound, especially when muted, was an achingly personal counterpart to the vocals of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. Relaxin’ (plus its Prestige companions, Miles, Cookin’, Workin’, and Steamin’) reestablished Davis, and elevated his quintet as the gold standard of small groups. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; With its accent on bright tempos, from medium-bounce to crisply up, Relaxin’ remains one of Davis’s sunniest outings, a prime example of one of the outstanding ensembles of the 20th century reaching the summit of their artistry. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Miles Davis, trumpet & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; Philly Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. The sextet tracks with Sonny Rollins and Bennie Green were the first recordings Miles made after his affiliation with Capitol ended, a hiatus of approximately ten months. It began a long and fruitful association with Prestige, first in all-star contexts and, later, with the first of his regular quintets. Miles was battling personal problems in this period and also was not in favor with the critics. Some of them still thought of his tone and style as “a man walking on egg shells,” when, in reality, he was into a more popping, burning attack. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The 1953 tracks with Al Cohn and Zoot Sims (all compositions by Cohn) are in a more laid-back groove, striking a balance between the Capitol nonet and the fierce swing of the “Blue ‘n’ Boogie” with J.J. Dolphy’s second album as a leader is a departure from his first, Outward Bound, where he used a conventional front line (his alto with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard) albeit differently, in that by utilizing Ron Carter’s bowed cello as a second voice he achieves a chamber-like avant jazz. It was quite daring for its time and again spotlights Eric’s bass clarinet and flute as well as, on one number (“Eclipse,” a Charles Mingus composition), conventional clarinet. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; Eric Dolphy, alto sax, flute, Bb, bass clarinets & lt;br & gt; Ron Carter, cello & lt;br & gt; George Duvivier, bass & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Eric Dolphy & lt;br & gt; Ron Carter & lt;br & gt; George Duvivier & lt;br & gt; Roy Haynes & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. This was Charles Mingus’s first recording with a working band of his own, issued on his own enterprising Debut label. The group was also the first to carry the Mingus Jazz Workshop banner. Recorded live, the music is among the earliest examples of the inspired interplay Mingus demanded from his musicians, and the unity of musical purpose he strived after. “Work Song” was the first Mingus composition with a socially conscious title and message. Max Roach, Mingus’ partner in the Debut venture, sits in for “Percussion Discussion,” a rousing duet (Mingus overdubbed a third part, played on piccolo bass). Barrow and Bert rise to the occasion, Waldron is already himself, and Jones, a Monk graduate, plays with taste and intelligence. A companion album to Bird at St. Nick’s, this was also taped on location by trombonist Jimmy Knepper. It comes, most likely, from the Three Deuces on New York’s famed “Swing Alley,” 52nd Street. The supporting case of trumpeter Miles Davis, pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Max Roach helped compromise the Charlie quintet but Jordan is heard in solo only briefly and Davis hardly at all. Tape was precious and Knepper saved the lion’s share for Bird. The Sonny Rollins Quartet Tenor Madness LP (Vinyl)
By the time this LP was released, Sonny Rollins already had such albums under his name as Worktime and Sonny Rollins Plus 4, in addition to his sideman exploits with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. Even the critics who had been slow in recognizing what fellow jazzmen already knew – that here was a young giant in our midst – could not help see the light. Tenor Madness, in which he was joined by the rhythm section from the Miles Davis Quintet, further substantiated and underlined his rapidly rising stature. The material is an effective mixture of Rollins’ playing attitudes with an intriguing original, “Paul’s Pal,” and the mining of unusual material such as “My Reverie” and “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.” And, of course, there is the celebrated title track featuring the two titans to emerge in the Fifties, Rollins and his guest, visiting in the studio that day, John Coltrane. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Sonny Rollins, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; John Coltrane, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Red Garland, piano & lt;br & gt; Paul Chambers, bass & lt;br & gt; & quot;Philly & quot; Joe Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Gerry Mulligan & Thelonious Monk Mulligan Meets Monk LP (Vinyl)
& lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime meetings of giants...Baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and pianist Thelonious Monk team up on this 1957 recording! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; When Riverside pared Thelonious Monk and Gerry Mulligan on this album, it seemed like a daring move. It is now clear that both men were the kind of revolutionaries who had substantial respect for the jazz tradition. It was more than a meeting of giants, it was proof of the strong bond connecting theoretically opposing forms of modern jazz (bop vs. cool). & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Gerry Mulligan, baritone sax & lt;br & gt; Thelonious Monk, piano & lt;br & gt; Wilbur Ware, bass & lt;br & gt; Shadow Wilson, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;br & gt; & lt;/b & gt; 1.
