experimental pitfalls of prior solo outings to fully embrace his metallic origins, Dickinson - the solo artist - is at his creative peak on these two records. The importance of co-songwriter, producer, and guitarist Roy Z's guidance in this revival
cannot be overstated, and reuniting with fellow Maiden alum Adrian Smith wasn't a bad idea, either. Muscular anthems such as 'King in Crimson,' 'Killing Floor,' and the title track manage to deliver with aggression, confidence, and, most importantly,
a modern metal aesthetic sorely missing in Iron Maiden's efforts of the time.... a storming parting shot of 'Machine Men' (a classic Dickinson-Smith collaboration if ever there was one) and 'The Alchemist' (which revisits the title track's main theme
in Seventh Son fashion) offer a worthy finale to this very impressive album.

We recorded this album in the same way we did The Book Of Souls in that we'd write a song, rehearse it and then put it down together straight away while it was all fresh in our minds. There's some very complex songs on this album which took a lot of
hard work to get them exactly as we wanted them to sound, so the process was at times very challenging, but Kevin is great at capturing the essence of the band and I think it was worth the effort! I'm very proud of the result and can't wait for fans

The live material is really the draw here. Neither record sounds as meaty and in your face as the band's monumental No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith, but it does catch the band at their loosest and goofiest. Lemmy toys with the crowds at both gigs between songs and gives his bandmates the business. When they finally tear into a song, it's like trying to grab hold of a freight train at cruising speed. No other band was better at adding some hair to the driving tempos of punk and taking the piss out of the doomy intentions of Sabbath and Priest. Spend ample time with the booklet included in the set while you're at it. The booklet includes some reproductions of hyperbolic articles written about the band in the British music rags as well as some remembrances from members of their road crew and a perfect tribute essay from, of all people, Peter Hook of New Order. A treat for fans and new listeners alike.

With this album, Dickinson did what fellow Brit Rob Halford did on some of Judas Priest's more commercial and pop-influenced releases -- he showed listeners another side of himself and demonstrated that he wasn't obligated to embrace fantasy metal 100 percent of the time. For Dickinson, coming out with something more pop-minded didn't mean being contrived or unimaginative. Tattooed Millionaire, for all its pop-metal gloss, has a lot of guts, and Dickinson is consistently inspired whether he is embracing original material or providing a memorable remake of David Bowie's 'All the Young Dudes.' On subsequent solo efforts like 1994's Balls to Picasso and 1998's The Chemical Wedding, the British vocalist got back to fantasy metal.
