Frank Zappa Hot Rats 180g LP (Vinyl)
& lt;b & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt;180g Vinyl Cut Directly from the Original 1969 1/4 & quot; Analog Stereo Edit Master by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering! & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Hot Rats cemented Frank Zappa as a musical force to be reckoned with. The album, recorded on a prototype 16-track recorder, sounds as fresh and sonically superior on this 180g audiophile edition as it did when first released in 1969. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; This was the first album Zappa recorded as a solo artist since leaving behind the Mothers. Hot Rats is also Zappa's first time focusing on one genre of music - namely jazz rock. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Blending rock and jazz stylings with top call studio musicians, the album opened the door to “Fusion Music” while putting Zappa on the guitar player map. Captain Beefheart makes a special guest appearance. It truly is a “Movie For Your Ears.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Hot Rats' genius lies in the way it fuses the compositional sophistication of jazz with rock's down-and-dirty attitude -- there's a real looseness and grit to the three lengthy jams, and a surprising, wry elegance to the three shorter, tightly arranged numbers (particularly the sumptuous 'Peaches en Regalia'). Perhaps the biggest revelation isn't the straightforward presentation, or the intricately shifting instrumental voices in Zappa's arrangements -- it's his own virtuosity on the electric guitar, recorded during extended improvisational workouts for the first time here. His wonderfully scuzzy, distorted tone is an especially good fit on 'Willie the Pimp,' with its greasy blues riffs and guest vocalist Captain Beefheart's Howlin' Wolf theatrics. & quot; & lt;/b & gt;- Steve Huey, allmusic.com & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Gatefold jacket & lt;br & gt; • Cut directly from the original 1969 1/4 & quot; Analog Stereo Edit Master & lt;br & gt; • Mastered by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering! & lt;br & gt; • Pressed in Germany & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;50th Anniversary Edition 180g Audiophile Vinyl Double LP! & lt;br & gt; Cut from Original 1967 Analog Master by Bernie Grundman! & lt;br & gt; Features Bonus Material & amp; Laser Etched Artwork On 4th Side! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The Zappa Family Trust marks the 50th anniversary of Frank Zappa & amp; The Mothers of Invention’s politically-charged, envelope-pushing sophomore album, Absolutely Free, with an expanded vinyl-exclusive edition via Zappa Records/UMe. & lt;b & gt;This double 180-gram LP version includes the original record mastered by Bernie Grundman cut directly from the original analog master tapes and a second disc with 20 minutes of rare and unreleased bonus material & lt;/b & gt;, including the & quot; Why Don’tcha Do Me Right? & quot;/ & quot;Big Leg Emma & quot; single as well as vintage remixes, and radio ads from The Vault on side one and a laser etching of Zappa’s visage from the album cover on side two. The package & lt;b & gt;features Zappa’s original layout and a reproduction of the rare, highly sought-after & quot;libretto, & quot; an 18-page booklet with a foreword by FZ & lt;/b & gt;and lyrics to all the compositions, that was offered only by mail order when originally released. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Released 50 years ago on May 26, 1967 on Verve Records, Absolutely Free was the Mothers of Invention’s follow-up to their landmark debut album, Freak Out! Brash, challenging and exhilarating, the record was revolutionary as it pushed the limits of what an album could be. A pop culture pastiche, the album leaps through genres – from psychedelic pop and progressive rock to free-form jazz and avant-garde noise to doo-wop and garage rock, often in the same composition as on album highlight & quot;Brown Shoes Don’t Make It, & quot; and is filled with Zappa’s trademark biting political and social satire. Hailed by All Music as a & quot;fabulously inventive record & quot; that is & quot;by turns hilarious, inscrutable, and virtuosically complex, & quot; the record is divided into two & quot;oratorios & quot; or song suites – & quot;Absolutely Free & quot; and & quot; The M.O.I. American Pageant & quot;– and is rife with complex instrumentation, cutting edge experimentation and unconventional editing. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Produced by Tom Wilson (Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Sun Ra), who first worked with the band on Freak Out! the year prior, Absolutely Free featured an expanded cadre of musicians working with Zappa and vocalist Ray Collins and included Jim Fielder on guitar, Roy Estrada on bass, Don Preston on keyboards, Bunk Gardner on woodwinds, and drummers Jim Black and Billy Mundi. The album was recorded the week before Thanksgiving, November 1966 in Los Angeles at the Sunset-Highland Studios of T.T.G. Inc., in a series of four sessions. It was edited and re-mixed in New York City at the MGM Studios in five sessions the following week. In Clash’s appreciation of the record, they exclaimed: & lt;b & gt; & quot;Amidst this high-brow inspiration and aggressive musical arrangement we have beautiful passages of melody, laugh-out-loud lyrics about vegetables and lacerating cynicism. Nonconformist, comedic and maverick, Absolutely Free establishes Zappa as a fantastical musical mutineer and pioneering bandleader. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; As Zappa wrote in the & quot;libretto, & quot; & lt;b & gt; & quot; The music of the MOTHERS speaks of the feelings of what might be described as THE VAST MINORITY. The feelings of the people on the fringe of everything... the ones who don’t care if they’re IN or OUT... don’t care if they’re HIP, HEP, SWINGIN’ or ZORCH. This is the audience the MOTHERS want to reach... those few have the power within themselves to cause or motivate social change but have never used it for one reason or another. If you are reading this and understand it (even if you have short hair and watch TV 18 hours a day), it is time that you realized WHO and WHAT YOU ARE. It is time you realized what the words to our songs mean. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; 50 years later Absolutely Free resonates as strong as ever and has proven itself to be prescient and wildly ahead of its time. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g Audiophile Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Double LP & lt;br & gt; • 50th Anniversary Edition & lt;br & gt; • All analog mastering by Bernie Grundman from the original 1967 analog master tape & lt;br & gt; • 18-page booklet including The Complete Libretto & lt;br & gt; • Laser etched 4th Side & lt;br & gt; • Bonus content: 20 Minutes Of Vault Material & lt;br & gt; • Gatefold Jacket & lt;br & gt; • This is the only album for which all of the artwork, including the merchanical layout, was created solely by Frank Zappa & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Frank Zappa, guitar, Vocals & lt;br & gt; Ray Collins, vocals, tambourine, PRUNE & lt;br & gt; Jim Fielder, guitar, piano & lt;br & gt; Don Preston, keyboards & lt;br & gt; Bunk Gardner, woodwinds & lt;br & gt; Roy Estrada, bass, vocals & lt;br & gt; Jim Black, drums, vocals & lt;br & gt; Billy Mundi, drums, percussion & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP 1 & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. A heady, psychedelic stew of low and high brow art forms, the film, written by Zappa and co-directed by him and Tony Palmer, mixed together irreverent comedic skits, madcap satire, eye-popping animation and virtuosic on-screen musical performances from both The Mothers and the RPO for a fascinating and free-wheeling multimedia extravaganza. Shot in just 10 days with a budget of around $650,000 from distributor United Artists, 200 Motels was one of the first movies to be filmed entirely on videotape and Zappa and crew pushed the envelope of the burgeoning new medium's possibilities, mostly notably through its use of spectacular - and at the time state-of-the-art - visual effects. Described by Zappa as & quot;at once a reportage of real events and an extrapolation of them... other elements include 'conceptual by-products' of the extrapolated 'real event' ... In some ways the contents of the film are autobiographical, & quot; 200 Motels was hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a & quot;a stunning achievement & quot; with & quot;just the right touch of insanity, & quot; and the & quot;zaniest piece of filmusical fantasy-comedy since The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night & quot; by Daily Variety. & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;The music, and its corresponding soundtrack, was equally diverse, a wild pastiche of avant-garde rock and orchestral compositions interspersed with dialog from the film. Up until that time, compositions like the finale piece, & quot;Strictly Genteel, & quot; were some of the most ambitious material ever written and recorded by Zappa. The band in the film and on the soundtrack consisted of Frank Zappa (guitar & amp; bass), Mark Volman (vocals & amp; special material), Howard Kaylan (vocals & amp; special material), Ian Underwood (keyboards & amp; winds), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), George Duke (keyboards & amp; trombone), Martin Lickert (bass), Jimmy Carl Black (vocals), and Ruth Underwood (orchestra drum set), not to mention the aforementioned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In true Zappa fashion as he wrote in the album's original liner notes, & quot; This music is not in the same order as in the movie. Some of this music is in the movie. Some of this music is not in the movie. Some of the music that's in the movie is not in the album. Some of the music that was written for the movie is not in the movie or the album. All of this music was written for the movie, over a period of 4 years. Most of it (60%) was written in motels while touring. & quot; & lt;/p & gt; & lt;p & gt;In celebration of FZ's famous 1971 & quot;surrealistic documentary, & quot; Zappa Records, UMe, and MGM are pleased to present the original soundtrack newly remastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and featuring all-original packaging including the booklet and mini-replica movie poster.
