Book Synopsis
What could be more wonderful than surrounding yourself with gorgeous handwoven textiles? Weaving them yourself! Favorite Scandinavian Projects to Weave features 45 timeless designs specially chosen from the popular Scandinavian weaving magazine Vävmagasinet, and offers all the help and inspiration you need to create a delightful and unique focal point for any room in your home. Behind each one-of-a-kind pattern is an expert designer and weaver to guide you, providing straightforward, step-by-step instruction as well as how-to and troubleshooting tips. Editor Tina Ignell's superb selection of projects use materials that are easy to find and fun to use, and many can be woven on a loom with four shafts and four treadles. Each pattern is intentionally versatile: choose from a wide array of fabrics to suit your individual style; change the size and color of blankets, pillows, and rugs to complement a room's décor; or match the color of table linen to your favorite china. Every taste is certain to be satisfied, as you'll find curtains woven in classic patterns such as huckaback, while "M's" and "O's" are paired with modern panel curtains made with linen and paper. For the table, designs run the gamut from the basic to weavings where you can "let loose" on the loom, including a decorative runner "Flowerbed," "Linen with Little Secrets" containing gold hearts and silver stars, and a tablecloth in block damask with napkins to match. Plus there are hand towels galore, generously sized and in fun patterns; pillows and throws to decorate sofas and beds; and even a comfy hammock to enjoy once the weaving is done. As an added bonus, Tina Ignell includes a special section on the care and handling of textiles, with guidelines and hints about featured fibers: linen, half-linen, cottolin, wool, paper, and piassava. With this book in hand and your own ideas, you are more than ready to create unique fabrics designed to last for generations.

Review Quotes
Booklist Björk and Ignell (the author of Favorite Rag Rugs, 2007, and Favorite Scandinavian Projects, 2010, and the editor of Vävmagasinet, a Scandinavian weaving magazine) provide an accessible collection for novices, filled with 10 different patterns and more than 30 individual projects to copy. Readers will still need to master the basics of warp and weft, overshot and waffle weaves (among other techniques), yet the authors feature excellent color photographs and full-fledged instructions, with techniques, materials, weaving finishing, weft sequence, appropriate graphs, and other pertinent information discussed. Many weave patterns will ring familiar to American crafters, such as twill (a herringbone pattern), waffle, and rosepath (flower shapes). For the most part, projects are home based: pillows, tablecloths and runners, rugs, towels, blankets, and one bathrobe. --Barbara Jacobs --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.--Tina Ingell "Simple Weaves"
INTRODUCTION Surrounding yourself with handwoven textiles makes everyday life special and gives parties an extra "shine." Yet another dimension is added when you weave them yourself. Curiosity is piqued when a weaving design is chosen. Calmness pervades as you thread and warp. Expectations rise when the first weft is thrown and satisfaction grows as the weaving progresses. For this book, Favorite Scandinavian Projects to Weave, we have selected 45 patterns from Vävmagasinet - the Scandinavian Weaving Magazine. Most of all, we wanted weavings that are easy to make and can be woven on a loom with four shafts and four treadles. We have used materials that are easy to find and fun to weave with. To make it easy for you to find a suitable weaving, there is an index at the end of the book where the projects are divided into categories according to the number of shafts and treadles. This book contains a rich choice of furnishing textiles for many types of homes. The size and color of a blanket can changed for the room where it will be and table linens can be matched to the color of your favorite china. Curtains woven in classic patterns such as huckaback and M's and O's are paired with modern panel curtains made with linen and paper. For the table we have selected both classic designs and weavings where you can "let loose" a little at the loom. For the decorative runner "Flowerbed" you can pick little flowers that don't need any water to strew over the piece, on "Linen with Little Secrets" you can weave in gold hearts, silver stars, or small photos and, for the fanciful runners in linen and paper, you can decide how long the inlay should be. Our cherished hand towels deserve their own chapter. Generously sized towels in exciting patterns, such as the black and white hand towels with color effects or striped towels in warm yellow and orange tones, are practical and fine at the same time. Embroidery is an easy decorative touch for any kind of towel. It could be a heart and small flowers in cross stitch as on the "Little Heart" hand towel and the Linen Summer hand towels or roses in straight stitch on a small towel. You can create your own patterns and monograms by drawing them on graph paper. Behind every weaving in this book is an expert weaver and designer. The designers' experience, imagination, and knowledge stimulate the continued development of weaving. With this book in hand and your own ideas, the path is cleared for you to create your own furnishing textiles for tomorrow's linen closets and homes. Because you'll get as much pleasure caring for woven textiles as weaving and using them, in the book's final section we share tips on how to make handwoven textiles even lovelier over time.
This lovely book explores the relationship between color, structure, and function, lending insight into that appealing aesthetic. The author's approach combines the best aspects of a weavers study course with a set of projects that readers will delight in making for their homes. Simple Weaves is a treasure trove of weaving ideas and inspiration. --Hand Woven (January 2013)--Tina Ignell "Simple Weaves"
