Magic, Science, and Religion in Early Modern Europe - (New Approaches to the History of Science and Medicine) by Mark A Waddell (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 300Genre: TechnologySub-Genre: HistorySeries Title: New Approaches to the History of Science and MedicineFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Cambridge University PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Mark A WaddellLanguage: English About the Book An accessible new exploration of the vibrant world of early modern Europe through a focus on magic, science, and religion. Book Synopsis From the recovery of ancient ritual magic at the height of the Renaissance to the ignominious demise of alchemy at the dawn of the Enlightenment, Mark A. Waddell explores the rich and complex ways that premodern people made sense of their world. He describes a time when witches flew through the dark of night to feast on the flesh of unbaptized infants, magicians conversed with angels or struck pacts with demons, and astrologers cast the horoscopes of royalty. Ground-breaking discoveries changed the way that people understood the universe while, in laboratories and coffee houses, philosophers discussed how to reconcile the scientific method with the veneration of God. This engaging, illustrated new study introduces readers to the vibrant history behind the emergence of the modern world. Review Quotes 'An enchanting, yet eminently accessible, tour of the magical and mysterious in European thought from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. The real wizardry is how Waddell masterfully explains the uniqueness of early modern views of magic, religion and nature, while emphasizing the profound links between this past and our present.' Matthew James Crawford, Kent State University'Waddell provides a superb review of the intersections among belief systems and underlines the great extent to which they determined early modern lived experience. Magic, Science and Religion in Early Modern Europe is deftly written and invites the reader to imagine as well as learn, to engage curiosity and passion as well as intellect. It is a triumph in the genre.' Allison Kavey, CUNY John Jay College and CUNY Graduate Center

Complete with crisp reproductions, details, and insightful essays, this monograph spans his entire repertoire, illuminating the artist's outstanding ability not only to bear witness to the spirit of the Dutch Golden Age, but also to encapsulate an entire story in just one... Book Synopsis Despite numbering at just 35, his works have prompted a New York Times best seller; a film starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth; record visitor numbers at art institutions from Amsterdam to Washington, DC; and special crowd-control measures at the Mauritshuis, The Hague, where thousands flock to catch a glimpse of the enigmatic and enchanting Girl with a Pearl Earring, also known as the "Dutch Mona Lisa".In his lifetime, however, the fame of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) barely extended beyond his native Delft and a small circle of patrons. After his death, his name was largely forgotten, except by a few Dutch art collectors and dealers. Outside of Holland, his works were even misattributed to other artists. It was not until the mid-19th century that Vermeer came to the attention of the international art world, which suddenly looked upon his narrative minutiae, meticulous textural detail, and majestic planes of light, spotted a genius, and never looked back. This 40th anniversary edition showcases the complete catalog of Vermeer's work, presenting the calm yet compelling scenes so treasured in galleries across Europe and the United States into one monograph of utmost reproduction quality. Crisp details and essays tracing Vermeer's career illuminate his remarkable ability not only to bear witness to the trends and trimmings of the Dutch Golden Age but also to encapsulate an entire story in just one transient gesture, expression, or look.About the seriesTASCHEN turns 40! Awake Where You Are - by Martin Aylward (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 232Genre: Self ImprovementSub-Genre: Personal GrowthFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Wisdom PublicationsAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Martin AylwardLanguage: English Book Synopsis The body is of course integral to meditation, but there are only a few books that focus this specifically on the body and the meditative experience. Awake Where You Are addresses that need, and additionally integrates psychological concepts, which provides a more familiar entry point for people less familiar with Buddhism. "Embodied awareness is the way back home--intimacy with where and how we are right now, with what is happening and how we are meeting it. My intention is to lead you into the heart of your life. Inside your body, where everything happens--within a quality of listening rather than knowledge, of feeling rather than reaction. This meditative practice is radically transformative." --Martin Aylward Pulled around by desires and distractions, we're so easily disconnected from ourselves. Life is happening right in front of us, and within us--but still, we manage to miss so much of it. Awake Where You Are provides the antidote, inviting us to go deep into our own bodies, to inhabit our sensory experience carefully; to learn the art of living from the inside out, and in the process to find ease, clarity, and an authentic, unshakeable freedom. The practices in the book literally bring us back into our skin, where we can reconnect with a more rich, meaningful, and peaceful life. Aylward writes with sophisticated subtlety, as well as the heart-opening simplicity and clarity born of deep experience. And this book is more than a meditation guide--it's a guide to living an embodied life. You'll learn about the following areas and practices: - Understanding and liberating our primal human drives. Aylward explains how the three primary drives--survival, sexual, and social--function within us, and how we can engage their energy to explore, understand, and liberate them. - Integrating psychological understanding with meditative practice. Awake Where You Are goes beyond the broad brushstrokes of Buddhist psychology, inviting the reader into an exploration of their own particular psychological history and conditioning. - Investigating the nuances of love. Readers will learn to see the classical Buddhist heart qualities, or brahmaviharas (loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity) as distinct flavors of love, and as the natural resting places of a free heart. "Martin is a marvelous teacher and offers us the refreshing wisdom of an embodied life." --Jack Kornfield, author of No Time Like the Present Review Quotes "Fresh, original, and insightful, Martin's writing, both clear and incisive, will help any reader discover how to live a free, awake, embodied life. It is both a delightful and refreshing study on embodied awareness and an invaluable contribution to the field of mindfulness. If you were to have only one book on the body, I highly recommend you read this one."--Mark Coleman, author of Make Peace with Your Mind"Martin is a marvelous teacher and offers us the refreshing wisdom of an embodied life."--Jack Kornfield, author of No Time Like the Present"Martin Aylward goes straight to the heart, giving us a multitude of useful ways to explore a deeply embodied meditative practice."--Martine Batchelor, author of Let Go: A Buddhist Guide to Breaking Free of Habits"Without pressure or dogma, and with a gentle and wise approach, Martin Aylward guides us through a deep and expansive practice which, far from being removed from the world, shows us how to move through our lives with more clarity and presence."--Emilie Veyretout "Le Figaro" About the Author After experiencing strong intimations of the spiritual as a teenager, Martin Aylward traveled to India at the age of nineteen to explore meditation. He spent most of the next five years in monasteries, ashrams, and meditation centers in India and Thailand, including two years in a hermitage in the Himalayas with one of his teachers. As well as having the good fortune to learn from and practice with many different teachers, both Asian and Western, Martin has spent much time in solitude with his real guru, Nature--and his teaching often emphasizes contact with Nature as a resource for Awakening. In 1995 he co-founded the Tapovan Dharma Community in the French Pyrenees with his wife Gail. Gradually, the number of visitors increased beyond the capacity of the place, and in 2005--just ten years after opening--they relocated to Le Moulin (Moulin de Chaves), a former Zen monastery in the Dordogne, Southwest France, where Martin and Gail continue to live with their two children. In addition to guiding Dharma practice at Le Moulin as resident teacher, Martin has been invited to teach Dharma around the world since 1999. His approach draws on extensive practice in the Buddhist Theravada tradition, as well as the influence of Non-dual teachings and the Diamond Approach

Desperate - by Kris Maher (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 352Genre: Freedom + Security / Law EnforcementSub-Genre: EnvironmentalFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Scribner Book CompanyAge Range: AdultAuthor: Kris MaherLanguage: English Book Synopsis Erin Brockovich meets Dark Waters in this propulsive and heart-wrenching legal drama set in Appalachian coal country, as one determined lawyer confronts a coal industry giant in a battle over clean drinking water for a West Virginia community--from Wall Street Journal reporter Kris Maher. For two decades, the water in the taps and wells of Mingo County didn't look, smell, or taste right. Could it be the root of the health problems--from kidney stones to cancer--in this Appalachian community? Environmental lawyer Kevin Thompson certainly thought so. For seven years, he waged an epic legal battle against Massey Energy, West Virginia's most powerful coal company, helmed by CEO Don Blankenship. While Massey's lawyers worked out of a gray glass office tower in Charleston known as "the Death Star," Thompson set up shop in a ramshackle hotel in the fading coal town of Williamson. Working with fellow lawyers and a crew of young activists, Thompson would eventually uncover the ruthless shortcuts that put the community's drinking water at risk. A respected preacher and his brother, retired coal miners, and women whose families had lived in the area's coal camps for generations, all put their trust in Thompson when they had nowhere else to turn. As he dug deeper into the mystery of the water along a stretch of road where the violence from the legendary Hatfield-McCoy feud still echoes, he was pulled into the darkest corners of Mingo County, risking his finances, his marriage, his career, and even his safety. Bringing to life a rich cast of characters and the legacy of coal mining in an essential yet often misunderstood part of America, On Desperate Ground is a masterful work of investigative reporting about greed and denial, a revealing portrait of a town besieged by hardship and heartbreak, and an inspiring account of one tenacious environmental lawyer's mission to expose the truth and demand justice. Review Quotes "Kris Maher's real-life legal thriller about an Appalachian community's fight for the right to clean drinking water will grip you from start to finish. It's an astonishing tale that pits a tenacious, environmental lawyer against one America's most infamous coal companies. Maher uncovers a trail of corporate greed and corruption on a monumental scale." --Eric Eyre, Pulitzer Prize winner and author of Death In Mud Lick: A Coal Country Fight Against the Drug Companies That Delivered the Opioid Epidemic "Desperate is an exhilarating chronicle of what it takes to build a better world. Kris Maher's brilliant reporting is the fuel behind this propulsive story of brass-tacks Appalachian justice, closely following a troubling case that forces us to face the hardest questions of public health and power. Its call for long-haul environmental accountability will resonate in every community that has been at the mercy of those who never seem to stop taking." --Anna Clark, author of The Poisoned City: Flint's Water and the American Urban Tragedy "Kris Maher has written a deft, illuminating and often riveting account of a modern-day David and Goliath legal battle, expertly revealing the devastating consequences of regulatory disregard and corporate greed behind our energy policies. Timely as ever, Desperate gives us reasons to believe in the still small possibility of justice--and the unsung heroes fighting to defend our right to a glass of clean drinking water." --Jeff Biggers, author of Reckoning at Eagle Creek: The Secret Legacy of Coal in the Heartland About the Author Kris Maher is a journalist who writes for The Wall Street Journal on environmental issues, coal mining, politics, regional economics, and other topics. Since 2005, he has reported on the Flint water crisis, the PFAS drinking water contamination, and the Upper Big Branch mine disaster and covered the trials of Jerry Sandusky, Bill Cosby, and Don Blankenship.
