Reiki - by Carmen Fernandez (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 96Genre: Body + Mind + SpiritSub-Genre: HealingFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Lorenz BooksAge Range: AdultBook theme: Energy (Qigong, Reiki, Polarity)Author: Carmen FernandezLanguage: English About the Book Unlock the power of Reiki with this beautiful and informative guide, with step-by-step photographs. Book Synopsis Reiki, a Japanese word pronounced ray-key, can be translated to mean universal life force, or universally guided energy. It is a very simple system of healing, carried out by placing hands on or over a person (who is always clothed), or animal or plant, with the intent to channel Reiki. It can also be sent, as absent healing, over distance and even through time. Reiki heals on all levels, physically, mentally and spiritually, and supports the body's natural ability to heal itself. It is a non-confrontational form of healing, soothing away many different troubles and traumas in a very gentle way. It is also nondenominational, practised by people of many different religions and cultures. You don't need to commit to a belief system in order to channel Reiki, or enjoy its benefits; all you need is the desire to heal and be healed. This practical book by a Reiki master, with clear advice and step-by-step guidance, serves as a valuable introduction to all aspects of Reiki for those who aspire to feel its healing energy and universal love, and to inspire those who already enjoy the balancing effects of this all-embracing, healing art. Review Quotes Reiki healer Fernandez skillfully breaks down the essentials of Reiki for general audiences and aspiring practitioners. The purpose of Reiki, Fernandez writes, is to channel a universal life force of love and healing through the placing of hands on recipient: to generate heat and energy so as to relieve pain, release trauma, and promote wholeness. Fernandez explains how, during a Reiki session, the recipient lies in a prone position or is seated while a practitioner uses his or her hands to access hot spots of tension or cold spots of energy blockage. The author provides instructions on vibrational healing, hand positions, working with symbols, and creating a cleansing space. (Clear instructions and helpful photos walk leaders through the practices.) This comprehensive introduction will provide novices with an easy entree into Reiki healing.--PW Publishers Weekly spring highlights 2021, December 2020

Why I Don't Write - (Vintage Contemporaries) by Susan Minot (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 176Genre: Fiction + Literature GenresSub-Genre: LiterarySeries Title: Vintage ContemporariesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: VintageAge Range: AdultAuthor: Susan MinotLanguage: English Book Synopsis A superb collection of short fiction--her first in thirty years and spanning many geographies--from the critically acclaimed author of Monkeys, Evening, and Thirty Girls. A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK. A writer dryly catalogs the myriad reasons she cannot write; an artist bicycles through a protest encampment in lower Manhattan and ruminates on an elusive lover; an old woman on her deathbed calls out for a man other than her husband; a hapless fifteen-year-old boy finds himself in sexual peril; two young people in the 1990s fall helplessly in love, then bicker just as helplessly, tortured by jealousy and mistrust. In each of these stories Minot explores the difficult geometry of human relations, the lure of love and physical desire, and the lifelong quest for meaning and connection. Her characters are all searching for truth, in feeling and in action, as societal norms are upended and justice and coherence flounder. Urgent and immediate, precisely observed, deeply felt, and gorgeously written, the stories in Why I Don't Write showcase an author at the top of her form. Review Quotes "A winning blend of emotional intensity, capricious playfulness and keen-eyed observation." --Minneapolis Star Tribune"A winning blend of emotional intensity, capricious playfulness and keen-eyed observation." --Minneapolis Star Tribune "Tender, precise, emotional, insightful and funny." --Julianne Moore"Why I Don't Write: And Other Stories, [Minot's] first in some thirty years, showcases her versatility. Its ten stories range from mainstream to experimental, with sundry stops in between. . . . She has an unmistakable knack for distilling things, and gorgeously, at that. . . . Taken as a whole, Minot's collection is, by turns, spiky and intimate, adventurous, stark and lyrical. . . . Few story collections shine as brightly." --Portland Press Herald (Maine)"Why I Don't Write is a quiet collection, but it is not a halting or timid one. Minot still has a poet's instinct for the surprising volta, the striking image, the bracing final line. After thirty years away from the short story, it is good to have her back, clear-eyed and fearless as ever, whispering difficult truths and ambiguities that a less assured writer would feel compelled to shout." --The New York Times Book Review "Susan Minot is an author well reputed for the purity and terseness of her prose exhibited over a career of more than three decades. Her latest book, a collection of ten stories is no exception. . . . Minot excels in description of people and places. . . . [A] rewarding read." --New York Journal of Books"[Why I Don't Write] is strikingly visual. Here, the light is often white, people's heads are bullet-shaped, and the littered car of a scoundrel professor is a fish tank. At their best, the sentences are frozen frames peering at the reader, as the reader peers back, peeling new information with each read. . . . [These stories] spill with luscious sentences that scintillate." --Chicago Review of Books "[Minot's] gift is for illuminating revelatory moments in characters' lives. . . . Throughout, Minot is keenly aware of how men hurt women--as well as how women sabotage themselves." --Kirkus Reviews "Minot . . . finds hints of violence, grief, and trauma in her characters' interior lives in this precise, shimmering collection." --Publishers Weekly About the Author Susan Minot is an award-winning novelist, short story writer, poet, and screenwriter. Her first novel, Monkeys, was published in a dozen countries and won the Prix Femina Étranger in France. Her novel Evening was a worldwide bestseller and became a major motion picture. She teaches at Stony Brook University in New York City and conducts a private writing workshop.

Sharks in the Shallows - by W Clay Creswell (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 184Genre: NatureSub-Genre: AnimalsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: University of South Carolina PressAge Range: AdultBook theme: FishAuthor: W Clay CreswellLanguage: English About the Book With a better understanding of sharks' responses to their environment, and what motivates them to attack humans, he hopes people will develop a greater appreciation of the invaluable role sharks play in our marine environment. Book Synopsis Powerful and mysterious, sharks inspire both fascination and fear. Worldwide, oceans are home to some five-hundred species, and of those, fifty-six are known to reside in or pass through the waters off the coast of both North and South Carolina. At any given time, waders, swimmers, and surfers enjoying these waters are frequently within just one-hundred feet of a shark. While it's unnerving to know that sharks often swim just below the surface in the shallows, W. Clay Creswell, a shark-bite investigator for the Shark Research Institute's Global Shark Attack File, explains that attacks on humans are extremely rare. In 2019 the International Shark Attack File confirmed sixty-four unprovoked attacks on humans, including three in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. While acknowledging that they pose real dangers to humans, Creswell believes the fear of sharks is greatly exaggerated. During his sixteen-year association with the Shark Research Institute, he has investigated more than one hundred shark-related incidents and has maintained a database of all shark-human encounters along the Carolina coastlines back to 1817. Creswell uses this data to expose the truth and history of this often-sensationalized topic. Beyond the statistics related to attacks in the Carolina waters, Sharks in the Shallows offers a history of shark-human interactions and an introduction to the world of shark attacks. Creswell details the conditions that increase a person's chances of an encounter, profiles the three species most often involved in attacks, and reveals the months and time of day with the highest probability of an encounter. With a better understanding of sharks' responses to their environment, and what motivates them to attack humans, he hopes people will develop a greater appreciation of the invaluable role sharks play in our marine environment. About the Author W. Clay Creswell has been a North and South Carolina region shark-bite investigator for the Shark Research Institute Global Shark Attack File since 2004. In this role he has become a trusted media resource for the National Geographic Channel's series When Sharks Attack and local television, newspaper, and online news outlets. Creswell is an environmental health program specialist with the Pender County Health Department in North Carolina.

The Gentle Parenting Book - by Sarah Ockwell-Smith (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 320Genre: Family + RelationshipsSub-Genre: ParentingSeries Title: GentleFormat: PaperbackPublisher: PiatkusAge Range: AdultBook theme: MotherhoodAuthor: Sarah Ockwell-SmithLanguage: English Book Synopsis Parenting trends come and go. Gentle parenting is different - it isn't a label for a precise set of rules but a method of parenting that embraces the needs of parent and child, while being mindful of current science and child psychology. It means parenting with empathy, respect, understanding - and boundaries. In The Gentle Parenting Book, Sarah Ockwell-Smith provides a trustworthy combination of what-to-expect information and gentle-parenting solutions to the most common challenges faced by parents with young children. Sarah addresses a wide variety of topics, including coping with a crying baby, introducing solid foods and creating healthy eating habits, potty training, starting nursery and school, sibling rivalry, tantrums, whining and sulking, aggressive behaviour and much more. And for those parents who have previously used a more authoritarian style of parenting, there's plenty of advice - and reassurance - on making the transition to a gentler approach. For many, gentle parenting comes as a relief because it chimes with their deepest instincts about the best way to raise their children. Review Quotes This book is full of useful tips for how to parent gently. Drawing on her own and others' experiences, and with her trademark forthright approach, Sarah Ockwell-Smith offers advice and guidance for parenting children in a way that encourages and enables them to grow and learn. While the book is aimed at parents with children from birth to age seven, much of what Sarah has to offer is also relevant for parents with older children, and for relationships in general. In particular, I found her suggestion that we should THINK before we respond to others - that is to consider whether what we have to say is True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary and Kind - to be pertinent, both within and beyond the sphere of parenting.--Gill Rapley, PhD, co-author of Baby-led Weaning and the 'baby-led' series of parenting booksWhat a lovely book! Sarah Ockwell-Smith uses the term 'gentle parenting' to encompass deep insights into the ways that parents can be responsive to the needs of children while maintaining their own inner balance. I love the way Sarah breaks the concept down into clear guidelines - without being strident about one right way to be a parent - and the way she addresses the challenge of shifting from mainstream parenting to more gentle ways. The world can be a harsh place; families don't have to be.--Lawrence J. Cohen, PhD, author of Playful Parenting About the Author Sarah Ockwell-Smith is the mother of four children. She has a BSc in Psychology and worked for several years in Pharmaceutical Research and Development. Following the birth of her first child, Sarah re-trained as a Paediatric Homeopath, Antenatal Teacher and Birth and Postnatal Doula. She has also undertaken training in Baby Massage, Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy. Sarah specialises in gentle parenting methods and is co-founder of the GentleParenting website (www.gentleparenting.co.uk). Sarah writes a parenting blog (www.sarahockwell-smith.com) which is read by 3 million parents per year, and is the author of BabyCalm, ToddlerCalm, The Gentle Sleep Book, The Gentle Parenting Book and The Gentle Discipline Book. We Are What We Eat - by Alice Waters (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 208Genre: Social ScienceSub-Genre: Agriculture & FoodFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Penguin PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Alice WatersLanguage: English About the Book "From chef and food activist Alice Waters, an impassioned plea for a radical reconsideration of the way each and every one of us cooks and eats"-- Book Synopsis From chef and food activist Alice Waters, an impassioned plea for a radical reconsideration of the way each and every one of us cooks and eats In We Are What We Eat, Alice Waters urges us to take up the mantle of slow food culture, the philosophy at the core of her life's work. When Waters first opened Chez Panisse in 1971, she did so with the intention of feeding people good food during a time of political turmoil. Customers responded to the locally sourced organic ingredients, to the dishes made by hand, and to the welcoming hospitality that infused the small space--human qualities that were disappearing from a country increasingly seduced by takeout, frozen dinners, and prepackaged ingredients. Waters came to see that the phenomenon of fast food culture, which prioritized cheapness, availability, and speed, was not only ruining our health, but also dehumanizing the ways we live and relate to one another. Over years of working with regional farmers, Waters and her partners learned how geography and seasonal fluctuations affect the ingredients on the menu, as well as about the dangers of pesticides, the plight of fieldworkers, and the social, economic, and environmental threats posed by industrial farming and food distribution. So many of the serious problems we face in the world today--from illness, to social unrest, to economic disparity, and environmental degradation--are all, at their core, connected to food. Fortunately, there is an antidote. Waters argues that by eating in a "slow food way," each of us--like the community around her restaurant--can be empowered to prioritize and nurture a different kind of culture, one that champions values such as biodiversity, seasonality, stewardship, and pleasure in work. This is a declaration of action against fast food values, and a working theory about what we can do to change the course. As Waters makes clear, every decision we make about what we put in our mouths affects not only our bodies but also the world at large--our families, our communities, and our environment. We have the power to choose what we eat, and we have the potential for individual and global transformation--simply by shifting our relationship to food. All it takes is a taste. Review Quotes "Waters makes a convincing case that the act of eating is political, with powerful effects on the future of the planet." --TIME "Waters, legendary chef and founder of Berkeley's Chez Panisse, delivers an impassioned manifesto on how food and its quality impacts society and the planet . . . She offers cogent, well-reasoned analyses of the price of convenience, blind trust in advertising, and cheapness, all of which seduce 'us into losing our desire, confidence, and ability to do things for ourselves.' Highly convincing and incredibly inspiring, Waters' fervent entreaty is sure to open eyes and change minds." --Publishers Weekly "This beautiful book speaks to the values we need to embrace at this moment in human history: Stewardship, diversity, interconnectedness, simplicity, balance. Reading it has inspired me to do things differently. It will inspire you as well." --Jane Fonda, author of What Can I Do? "In this warm, passionate and very personal book Alice Waters lays out a stunningly convincing case for changing the way we eat. No jargon, no big words, just Alice walking about all the things that matter most to her. I'm going to give this book to everyone I love." --Ruth Reichl, author of Save Me the Plums "Alice Waters is my favorite chef, and We Are What We Eat is a beautiful, important book. It's full of passion, anger at the way things are, and hope for a kinder, fairer, more humane, and vastly more enjoyable future. This book is the culmination of a life's work, a great life, and is a must read." --Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation "What Alice has contributed to the world is immeasurable, but this new book We Are What We Eat covers new ground. Alice has dedicated her entire life to people, the planet, and the food we consume. Here, she teaches us that food has an intrinsic value that today's society takes for granted. Imagine what this world would look, smell, and taste like if more of us followed her lead." --Ron Finley, The Gangsta Gardener About the Author Alice Waters is a chef and the founder/owner of Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California. She has won numerous awards, including the National Humanities Medal, the French Legion of Honor Medal, the Cavaliere of the Italian Republic, and three James Beards Awards. As vice president of Slow Food International and founder of the Edible Schoolyard Project, she has helped bring food awareness to people of all ages all over the world.

A far cry from Konmaried closets, capsule wardrobes, and conspicuous consumption, Christine's brand of "living with less" is more than a decluttering regimen. Inspired by her personal journey, Christine presents a radical revisioning of minimalism, one that celebrates the importance of history and heritage, and gives you permission to make space for what really matters...your way. Beautifully illustrated with original black-and-white prints and line drawings, The Afrominimalist's Guide to Living With Less is a testament to the idea that anyone can be a minimalist and a warm invitation to a life curated with intention, perfect for readers of Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus (The Minimalists), Marie Kondo, Joshua Becker, and Courtney Carver. Review Quotes "Christine has made accessible the very notion of living in a sustainable way from a cultural, historical and fashionable lens. Her approach to environmentalism is refreshing and necessary and is an important body of work at the intersection of racial and environmental justice." --Céline Semaan, founder of Slow Factory Foundation"Christine Platt is a natural storyteller. She invites us to reimagine what we think we know about minimalism, our relationship to our belongings, and what we make space for in our lives. These four steps will change your life and gently usher you into your own physical and mental space of sweet simplicity." --Rachel Cargle, author of I Don't Want Your Love & Light"Christine's book is the one I wish I'd had at my side when I began my own journey to living with less. She is a warm, engaging guide, who frames minimalism in a new light--one that examines the why behind our consumption and is more about authenticity than aesthetics. Finally, there is a book about minimalism for people who don't relate to an austere style!" --Laura Fenton, author of The Little Book of Living Small"Less is a mindset of expansion, and in The Afrominimalist's Guide to Living with Less Christine Platt gives us a new roadmap to curate the life you've always wanted." --Kate Northrup, author of Do Less and Money: A Love Story"This book is an extraordinary, life-changing invitation to live life on your terms. Christine Platt shows us that minimalism isn't a one-size fits all, colorless lifestyle but instead a way for us to live with intention, letting go of what doesn't matter and surrounding ourselves with what does. With warmth, wisdom, humor, and radical honesty, she takes us on a journey back to the essence of minimalism." --Courtney Carver, author of Soulful Simplicity and Project 333"Though titled a guide, what Platt has created is less of a script or scripture, and more of a Rorschach test for each reader--especially those of us who are Black--to see ourselves in it however we need to, in hopes to make living with less, living as more." --Jason Reynolds About the Author Christine Platt is a modern-day Renaissance woman. From serving as an advocate for policy reform to using the power of storytelling as a tool for social change, Christine's work reflects her practice of living with intention. She holds a BA in Africana Studies, MA in African-American Studies, and a JD in General Law. Christine has written over two dozen literary works for people of all ages. Crave - by Ed Smith (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 256Genre: Cooking + Food + WineSub-Genre: Courses & DishesFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Quadrille PublishingAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Ed SmithLanguage: English Book Synopsis Once again, Ed Smith has done something really smart. Cooking the flavors we are craving in any given moment, the resulting book feels so novel and fresh. Ed's writing is thoughtful and conversational; his recipes confident and delicious. -- Yotam Ottolenghi 6 Flavor Profiles. Over 100 recipes. Every craving covered. Why do we choose to cook the things we do, when we do? Most of the time, it is simply so we can eat what we really fancy; a subconscious response to a constantly fluctuating state of mind and appetite that's influenced by mood, season, weather, memory, occasion, outside events and internal feelings. Ed Smith helps his readers home in on their cravings (whatever the reason for them) by organizing his recipes within six cleverly conceived flavor profiles: fresh and fragrant chili and heat tart and sour curried and spiced rich and savory; and (best of all?) cheesy and creamy. There's also a directory of alternative cravings at the back, providing additional ways in. All bases are covered, from snacks through sides, to main courses and desserts. Think of fermented and fresh tomato salad with feta for when both sun and cook are already smiling; or lamb chops with cacio e pepe white beans if in need of a re-set; the likes of 'nduja spatchcock chicken, should a tickle of chili be in order; or curried brisket noodles to meet spice needs. Whether we want snap and crunch or velvet softness, sharp citrus or warming aromatics, or just something involving bubbling, molten cheese, CRAVE presents a fresh take on seasonal cooking, but goes beyond that too - acknowledging core instincts and base itches, and so delivering recipes you'll want to make every day of the week, whatever the weather or mood. About the Author Ed Smith is the author of the acclaimed On the Side (Bloomsbury 2017); the best-selling The Borough Market Cookbook (Hodder and Stoughton 2018); and the award-winning food blog www.RocketandSquash.com. A former City lawyer turned cook and food writer, Ed's words and recipes have appeared in all major food magazines, supplements and websites, including The Sunday Times, Guardian, Telegraph, The FT Weekend Magazine, Waitrose Weekend, Delicious, Olive, food52.com and eater.com. Ed and his work have won and been shortlisted on multiple occasions for numerous awards. Most recently, in 2020 he was shortlisted as Best Online Food Writer at the Guild of Food Writers Awards; and in 2019 as Best Cookery Writer alongside Diana Henry at the Fortnum and Mason Food Awards, and Best Food Writer alongside Bee Wilson and Grace Dent at the Guild of Food Writers Awards.

How Did We Get Here? - by Robert Dallek (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 272Genre: Political ScienceSub-Genre: American GovernmentFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Harper PerennialAge Range: AdultBook theme: Executive BranchAuthor: Robert DallekLanguage: English Book Synopsis The award-winning, New York Times bestselling historian considers the vast array of triumphs and failures of America's modern presidents that paved a path to Donald Trump, offering an understanding of our current moment and hope for a way back to true leadership. The struggle to preserve the Republic has never been easy or without perils. The rise of conflicting political parties, which the founders opposed, and President John Adams' Alien and Sedition Acts repressing First Amendment rights made Franklin's observation at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention--"a republic, if you can keep it"--seem prescient. In the twentieth century, America endured numerous struggles: economic depression, World War II, McCarthyism, the Vietnam War, Watergate, the Iran-contra scandal, the war in Iraq--all of which gave rise to demagogues, as did the growth and reach of mass media. But this wasn't the Founding Fathers' vision for our leadership. The resistance to putting a demagogue in the White House survived the anti-Communist agitation of the 1950s and the Vietnam War in the 1960s. But the latter opened the way for Richard Nixon's election in 1968 and Watergate, which again tested our democratic institutions and the rule of law. Nixon's resignation in August 1974 moved Vice President Gerald Ford, his successor, to declare, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over."But was it? Donald Trump's 2016 election has presented a new challenge. How did past politics and presidential administrations pave the way for this current assault on American democracy? Our nation's history provides reassurance that we will restore our better angels to government. Yet it must be considered that earlier administrations and public outlook facilitated the rise of such an un-presidential character as Trump in the first place. In How Did We Get Here?, Robert Dallek considers a century of modern administrations, from Teddy Roosevelt to today, shining a light on the personalities behind the politics and the voters who elected each. His cautionary tale reminds us that the only constant in history is change, but whether for good or ill the choice is Americans' to make. Review Quotes "History buffs looking for reassurance that American democracy can survive Trumpism will find it here."--Publishers Weekly"Informed and passionate."--Kirkus ReviewsEngaging....the prolific biographer [Dallek] posits a provocative thesis--that the transgressions and weaknesses of even our greatest chief executives set precedents of thought and action that led eventually to the political rise of Donald Trump.--Wall Street Journal"Anyone who wonders, when confronted with the latest White House shenanigans, "How did we get here?" will enjoy Robert Dallek's new book.... And there could be no better guide to answering it than this accomplished and deeply knowledgeable presidential historian.... Dallek delivers engaging chapters on the major presidents, rich with telling anecdotes and well-chosen quotations.... "How did we get here?" is indeed the right question. Yet only the passage of time and a far-reaching analysis of the many factors that contributed will answer it. Thankfully Dallek has opened the inquiry."--Washington Post

Edward Fosca is a murderer. Of this Mariana is certain. But Fosca is untouchable. A handsome and charismatic Greek tragedy professor at Cambridge University, Fosca is adored by staff and students alike--particularly by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens. Mariana Andros is a brilliant but troubled group therapist who becomes fixated on The Maidens when one member, a friend of Mariana's niece Zoe, is found murdered in Cambridge. Mariana, who was once herself a student at the university, quickly suspects that behind the idyllic beauty of the spires and turrets, and beneath the ancient traditions, lies something sinister. And she becomes convinced that, despite his alibi, Edward Fosca is guilty of the murder. But why would the professor cartnear one of his students? And why does he keep returning to the rites of Persephone, the maiden, and her journey to the underworld? When another body is found, Mariana's obsession with proving Fosca's guilt spirals out of control, threatening to destroy her credibility as well as her closest relationships. Number of Pages: 272Genre: Self ImprovementSub-Genre: Death, Grief, BereavementFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Forefront BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Mark S NegleyLanguage: English Book Synopsis Loss isn't one-size-fits-all. It comes in a million different forms--and all of them hurt. Whatever your situation, there is hope: you are not alone, you will get through this, and you can experience true joy again! An estimated two-hundred million Americans face the pain and confusion of loss every year, and most of us have no idea how to handle it. We're thrown into the deep end of grief without a life preserver, desperately trying to stay afloat in a sea of shock, anger, frustration, heartbreak, and hopelessness. Mark Negley knows what it's like to face the pain of loss and fight to build a new life from the ashes. Over the past thirty years, he has faced cancer, raised a special needs child, lost his beloved mother, nearly lost his wife in a car accident, and supported her through depression and mental health issues resulting from her brain injuries. Tragically, in 2016, Mark received the biggest blow of all when his wife of twenty years took her own life. Frustrated by the lack of relatable resources to help navigate his grief recovery, Mark set out to redefine the loss experience. After five years of research, in-depth interviews with loss survivors, and leading grief groups, he realized that the problem isn't how we experience grief; the problem is that traditional models make it seem too formulaic. He found that grief recovery isn't a linear progression from one clearly defined stage to the next; rather, it's a series of concentric circles--like ripples in a pond--that emanate from a center point of impact. Those circles form three "interconnected" phases of recovery called Survive, Alive, and Thrive. In Survive-Alive-Thrive: Navigating the Journey from Loss to Hope to Happiness, Mark Negley takes you on a journey through his loss experiences, using his story and the stories of several others to teach his revolutionary new model of grief recovery. You don't have to walk this difficult road alone. With the help of Mark and others, you can navigate from loss to hope and then to happiness. You don't have to settle for survival! Set your sights higher and learn how to thrive again! About the Author Mark Negley's passion for helping others through difficult life experiences has led him to serve as executive director of Survive-Alive-Thrive.org, a non-profit initiative inspired to provide insight, community, and emotional support for those who have experienced loss. His revelatory book, Survive-Alive-Thrive: Navigating the Journey from Loss to hope to Happiness, redefines the loss experience and provides a revolutionary new model for understanding grief recovery for the millions of Americans who suffer loss each year. As president of PondHouse Management Consulting Group, Mark leverages his twenty years of senior leadership experience across media, ecommerce, retail, and technology markets to help his business clients pursue revenue and income growth. His track record of success as a hands-on entrepreneur and strategic consultant includes building new business start-up ventures and leading corporate initiatives where he has been recognized as an innovator and visionary. Mark's commitment to his Christian faith has inspired him to share the power of God's love while engaging in leadership roles in several marketplace ministries, such as The New Canaan Society, Youth Impact Ministries, and Give Me an Answer. As a compelling public speaker and podcast host, Mark has enjoyed sharing stories from his journey at conferences, retreats, churches and with small groups and gatherings across the country. Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Mark is a widower and proud father of twenty-four-year-old son, Andersen. The Warsaw Orphan [is] a thoughtful, beautiful novel." -- Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Lost NamesInspired by the real-life heroine who saved thousands of Jewish children during WWII, The Warsaw Orphan is Kelly Rimmer's most anticipated novel since her bestselling sensation, The Things We Cannot Say.In the spring of 1942, young Elzbieta Rabinek is aware of the swiftly growing discord just beyond the courtyard of her comfortable Warsaw home. She has no fondness for the Germans who patrol her streets and impose their curfews, but has never given much thought to what goes on behind the walls that contain her Jewish neighbors. She knows all too well about German brutality--and that it's the reason she must conceal her true identity. But in befriending Sara, a nurse who shares her apartment floor, Elzbieta makes a discovery that propels her into a dangerous world of deception and heroism.Using Sara's credentials to smuggle children out of the ghetto brings Elzbieta face-to-face with the reality of the war behind its walls, and to the plight of the Gorka family, who must make the impossible decision to give up their newborn daughter or watch her starve. For Roman Gorka, this final injustice stirs him to rebellion with a zeal not even his newfound love for Elzbieta can suppress. But his recklessness brings unwanted attention to Sara's cause, unwittingly putting Elzbieta and her family in harm's way until one violent act threatens to destroy their chance at freedom forever. Changes - by Sheldon Pearce (Hardcover)
Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)Weight: 1 PoundsNumber of Pages: 288Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: MusicFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Simon & SchusterAuthor: Sheldon PearceAge Range: AdultLanguage: English Book Synopsis A New Yorker writer's intimate, revealing account of Tupac Shakur's life and legacy, timed to the fiftieth anniversary of his birth and twenty-fifth anniversary of his death. In the summer of 2020, Tupac Shakur's single "Changes" became an anthem for the worldwide protests against the murder of George Floyd. The song became so popular, in fact, it was vaulted back onto the iTunes charts more than twenty years after its release--making it clear that Tupac's music and the way it addresses systemic racism, police brutality, mass incarceration, income inequality, and a failing education system is just as important now as it was back then. In Changes, published to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of Tupac's birth and twenty-fifth anniversary of his death, Sheldon Pearce offers one of the most thoughtful and comprehensive accounts yet of the artist's life and legacy. Pearce, an editor and writer at The New Yorker, interviews dozens who knew Tupac throughout various phases of his life. While there are plenty of bold-faced names, the book focuses on the individuals who are lesser known and offer fresh stories and rare insight. Among these are the actor who costarred with him in a Harlem production of A Raisin in the Sun when he was twelve years old, the high school drama teacher who recognized and nurtured his talent, the music industry veteran who helped him develop a nonprofit devoted to helping young artists, the Death Row Records executive who has never before spoken on the record, and dozens of others. Meticulously woven together by Pearce, their voices combine to portray Tupac in all his complexity and contradiction. This remarkable book illustrates not only how he changed during his brief twenty-five years on this planet, but how he forever changed the world. About The Author Sheldon Pearce is the music writer and editor for The New Yorker. Previously, he was a contributing writer at Pitchfork. He has worked for NPR Music, and his writing has appeared in The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Fader, Spin, Dazed, Complex, Deadspin, and others.

Illuminating History - by Bernard Bailyn (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 288Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Personal MemoirsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: W. W. Norton & CompanyAge Range: AdultAuthor: Bernard BailynLanguage: English About the Book The brilliance of a master historian shines through this "elegant and engaging memoir" of a lifetime's work (Richard Aldous, Wall Street Journal). Book Synopsis Over a remarkable career Bernard Bailyn has reshaped our understanding of the early American past. Inscribing his superb scholarship with passion and imagination honed by a commitment to rigor, Bailyn captures the particularity of the past and its broad significance in precise, elegant prose. His transformative work has ranged from a new reckoning with the ideology that powered the opposition to British authority in the American Revolution, to a sweeping account of the peopling of America, and the critical nurturing of a new field, the history of the Atlantic world. Illuminating History is the most personal of Bailyn's works. It is in part an intellectual memoir of the significant turns in an immensely productive and influential scholarly career. It is also alive with people whose actions touched the long arc of history. Among the dramatic human stories that command our attention: a struggling Boston merchant tormented by the tensions between capitalist avarice and a constrictive Puritan piety; an ordinary shopkeeper who in a unique way feverishly condemned British authority as corrupt and unworthy of public confidence; a charismatic German Pietist who founded a cloister in the Pennsylvania wilderness famous for its strange theosophy, its spartan lifestyle, and its rich musical and artistic achievement. And the good townspeople of Petersham, whose response in 1780 to a draft Massachusetts constitution speaks directly to us through a moving insistence on individual freedoms in the face of an imposing central authority. Here is vivid history and an illuminating self-portrait from one of the most eminent historians of our time. Review Quotes Bailyn has mined the archives. In Illuminating History he explains how he found the golden nuggets and used them over seven decades of scholarship.... At this stage of his remarkable career, Bernard Bailyn has written a book to guide the historians who will write the next Pulitzer Prize works in the field.--Roger I. Abrams "New York Journal of Books"Bernard Bailyn's stature rests on imaginative analysis, brilliant insights, and superb, finely honed craftsmanship. All these, and his gift for understanding people, ... shine in Illuminating History.--Richard D. Brown, University of ConnecticutIn 2020, [Bernard Bailyn] published Illuminating History: A Retrospective of Seven Decades, an intellectual self-portrait that eschews conventional memoir in favor of a series of essays exploring some 'small, strange, obscure documents and individuals' that had captured his imagination. In an epilogue, he cautioned, as he often did, against imposing our own sense of certainty on the confusion of the past as it was actually experienced by those who lived it. 'The fact--the inescapable fact--is that we know how it all came out, ' he wrote, 'and they did not.'--Renwick McLean and Jennifer Schuessler "New York Times"The most striking takeaway is how much may depend on the random discovery of a single document--how one clue, backed by other evidence, can turn longstanding interpretations on their head.--Julia M. Klein "Boston Globe"Using the chapters in this... book as lamps and signposts, Bailyn has created an elegant roadmap of his intellectual journey.--George H. Nash "Law & Liberty"Illuminating History casts fresh light on a brilliant career. Bernard Bailyn emerges from its pages as a great historian at the peak of his powers.--Peter Onuf, University of Virginia[Bailyn] transformed the field of early American history as much as any single person could.--Gordon S. Wood, quoted in the New York TimesBernard Bailyn balances rigor and imagination in studying the past. Now a reflective memoir allows new generations to converse with a master humanist.--Peter H. Wood, Duke UniversityIn these engaging essays, Bernard Bailyn reveals the sources of his own creativity as the greatest historian of colonial and revolutionary America.--Jack Rakove, Stanford UniversityIn this revealing and deeply personal volume, Bernard Bailyn gives a moving and characteristically literate account of historical sensibility in the second half of the twentieth century.--Stanley N. When Evie Mead's husband, Robert, suddenly drops dead of a heart attack, a mysterious note is found among his possessions. It indicates that Evie may own the rights to an old hotel on Tregarrick Rock, one of the Isles of Scilly. Still grieving, Evie is inclined to leave the matter to the accountant to sort out. Her sister Margot, however, flown in from her glamorous career in LA, has other plans. Envisioning a luxurious weekend getaway, she goes right ahead and buys two tickets--one way--to Tregarrick. The Second - by Carol Anderson (Hardcover)
Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)Weight: 1 PoundsNumber of Pages: 272Genre: Political ScienceSub-Genre: Law EnforcementFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Bloomsbury PublishingAuthor: Carol AndersonAge Range: AdultLanguage: English Book Synopsis From the New York Times bestselling author of White Rage, an unflinching, critical new look at the Second Amendment--and how it has been engineered to deny the rights of African Americans since its inception. In The Second, historian and award-winning, bestselling author of White Rage Carol Anderson powerfully illuminates the history and impact of the Second Amendment, how it was designed, and how it has consistently been constructed to keep African Americans powerless and vulnerable. The Second is neither a "pro-gun" nor an "anti-gun" book; the lens is the citizenship rights and human rights of African Americans. From the seventeenth century, when it was encoded into law that the enslaved could not own, carry, or use a firearm whatsoever, until today, with measures to expand and curtail gun ownership aimed disproportionately at the African American population, the right to bear arms has been consistently used as a weapon to keep African Americans powerless--revealing that armed or unarmed, Blackness, it would seem, is the threat that must be neutralized and punished. Throughout American history to the twenty-first century, regardless of the laws, court decisions, and changing political environment, the Second has consistently meant this: That the second a Black person exercises this right, the second they pick up a gun to protect themselves (or the second that they don't), their life--as surely as Philando Castile's, Tamir Rice's, Alton Sterling's--may be snatched away in that single, fatal second. Through compelling historical narrative merging into the unfolding events of today, Anderson's penetrating investigation shows that the Second Amendment is not about guns but about anti-Blackness, shedding shocking new light on another dimension of racism in America. Review Quotes "The second amendment, as Carol Anderson deftly establishes here, was written in the blood of enslaved black people. Our stalemated gun rights debates have focused on the idea that the second amendment preserves liberty rather than its historic role in denying it. This book does a great deal to change the parameters of that conversation." --Jelani Cobb, New Yorker staff writer, author of THE SUBSTANCE OF HOPE "In this extraordinarily important book, Dr. Anderson shows that the Second Amendment was designed, and has always been implemented, to enable white Americans to dominate their Black neighbors. In her trademark engaging and unflinching prose, Dr. Anderson traces America's racist history of gun laws from the 1639 Virginia colony's prohibition on Africans carrying guns to the recent police murders of Breonna Taylor and Emantic Bradford, Jr., showing how calls for 'law and order' have concentrated guns in the hands of white people while defining Black gun ownership as a threat to society. Anderson's deft scholarship convincingly places the right to use force at the center of American citizenship, and warns that the Second Amendment, as it is currently exercised, guarantees that Black Americans will never be equal." --Heather Cox Richardson, author of HOW THE SOUTH WON THE CIVIL WAR "Carol Anderson brings her brilliant analytical framing to one of our most pressing issues: the proliferation of guns and the epidemic of American gun violence. She reveals the racial hypocrisy inherent in Second Amendment defenses of gun rights. The Second is a must-read for students of American History." --Natasha Trethewey, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, former U.S. Poet Laureate, author of MEMORIAL DRIVE "Carol Anderson brings her storied sense of the intertwining of past and present, her keen insights into the wiles of racism, and her passionate prose to this extraordinary take on the meaning of the Second Amendment. This is a necessary history of the roots of gun obsession in slavery, racial assumptions, legal and political fictions that may have put America on a 'fatal' spiral we can only hope to prevent. Let's dream that this book echoes across the partisan canyon." --David W. Blight, Yale University, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning FREDERICK DOUGLASS: PROPHET OF FREEDOM "A powerful consideration of the Second Amendment as a deliberately constructed instrument of White supremacy. . . . An urgent, novel interpretation of a foundational freedom that, the author makes clear, is a freedom only for some." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Carol Anderson's prose is unflinching, and she wastes no time as she marches the reader from the openly racist, clear-cutting suppression tactics of the early 20th century toward the carefully veneered, ruthlessly efficient disenfranchisement campaign of the present." --NPR Best Books of the Year on ONE PERSON, NO VOTE "This trenchant little book will push you to think not just about the vote count but about who counts, too." --New York Times on ONE PERSON, NO VOTE "An extraordinarily timely and urgent call to confront the legacy of structural racism . . . and to show its continuing threat to the promise of American democracy." --Editor's Choice, New York Times Book Review on WHITE RAGE "A sobering primer on the myriad ways African American resilience and triumph over enslavement, Jim Crow and intolerance have been relentlessly defied by the very institutions entrusted to uphold our democracy." --Washington Post on WHITE RAGE About The Author Carol Anderson is the Charles Howard Candler Professor and Chair of African American Studies at Emory University. She is the author of One Person, No Vote, longlisted for the National Book Award and a finalist for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award; White Rage, a New York Times bestseller and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award; Bourgeois Radicals; and Eyes off the Prize. Book Synopsis "In She Memes Well, Quinta gives more than a peek behind the curtain. She invites us in, lets us poke around and offers a balm for our aching souls. She moves beyond the jokes into something much deeper, something we may not recognize we need. She is the friend, sister, lover, cool co-worker we all wished we had." --Gabrielle Union, actress and New York Times bestselling author of We're Going to Need More Wine From comedian Quinta Brunson comes a deeply personal and funny collection of essays about trying to make it when you're struggling, the importance of staying true to your roots, and how she's redefined humor online. Quinta Brunson is a master at breaking the internet. Before having any traditional background in media, her humorous videos were the first to go viral on Instagram's platform. From there, Brunson's wryly observant POV helped cement her status in the comedy world at large, with roles on HBO, Netflix, ABC, Adult Swim, BuzzFeed, the CW, and Comedy Central. Now, Brunson is bringing her comedic chops to the page in She Memes Well, an earnest, laugh-out-loud collection about this unusual road to notoriety. If It Bleeds - by Stephen King (Paperback)
Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)Weight: 1 PoundsNumber of Pages: 448Genre: Fiction + Literature GenresSub-Genre: ThrillersFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Scribner Book CompanyAuthor: Stephen KingAge Range: AdultBook theme: SuspenseLanguage: English About the Book "The four never-before-published novellas in this collection represent horror master King at his finest, using the weird and uncanny to riff on mortality, the price of creativity, and the unpredictable consequences of material attachments. A teenager discovers that a dead friend's cell phone, which was buried with the body, still communicates from beyond the grave ... A series of apocalyptic incidents [bears] out one character's claim that 'when a man or a woman dies, a whole world falls to ruin.' 'Rat' sees a frustrated writer strike a Faustian bargain to complete his novel, and in the title story, private investigator Holly Gibney ... faces off against a ghoulish television newscaster who vampirically feeds off the anguish he provokes in his audience by covering horrific tragedies"--Publishers Weekly (03/09/2020) Book Synopsis *#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER* From the legendary storyteller and master of short fiction Stephen King comes an extraordinary collection of four new "exceptionally compelling novellas that reaffirm [King's] mastery of the form" (The Washington Post). Readers adore Stephen King's novels, and his novellas are their own dark treat, briefer but just as impactful and enduring as his longer fiction. Many of his novellas have been made into iconic films, including "The Body" (Stand By Me) and "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" (Shawshank Redemption). Four brilliant new tales in If It Bleeds are sure to prove as iconic as their predecessors. Once again, King's remarkable range is on full display. In the title story, reader favorite Holly Gibney (from the Mr. Mercedes trilogy and The Outsider) must face her fears, and possibly another outsider--this time on her own. In "Mr. Harrigan's Phone" an intergenerational friendship has a disturbing afterlife. "The Life of Chuck" explores, beautifully, how each of us contains multitudes. And in "Rat," a struggling writer must contend with the darker side of ambition. If these novellas show King's range, they also prove that certain themes endure. One of King's great concerns is evil, and in If It Bleeds, there's plenty of it. There is also evil's opposite, which in King's fiction often manifests as friendship. Holly is reminded that friendship is not only life-affirming but can be life-saving. Young Craig befriends Mr. Harrigan, and the sweetness of this late-in-life connection is its own reward. "Exactly what I wanted to read right now," said Ruth Franklin in a rave on the cover of The New York Times Book Review. "Phenomenal, said Brian Truitt in USA TODAY. "King still owns the fright business like none other." Review Quotes "As classic as [King's] novels are, his shorter fiction has been just as gripping over the years...The true highlight of the collection is the phenomenal 'The Life of Chuck'...Just when you think things are getting really weird, it all snaps together like an epiphany and you get to the gorgeous meat of the matter...Sure, King still owns the fright business like none other, but the iconic author will keep you up late at night engrossed in four tales about our dreams and our frailties." --Brian Truitt, USA Today "IF IT BLEEDS contains four new, exceptionally compelling novellas that reaffirm [King's] mastery of the form...the mid-length narrative suits his talents particularly well, permitting a degree of expansiveness while maintaining a controlled, disciplined approach to the material at hand. The results are stories that cover a surprising amount of emotional territory but can still be read in a sitting...a collection filled with startling, sometimes unsettling pleasures. In IF IT BLEEDS, King continues to draw from a rich and varied reservoir of stories. At its best, his work remains deeply empathetic and compulsively readable. May the reservoir never run dry." --William Sheehan, The Washington Post "[These stories] -- about the seductions and corruptions of technology, the extremes of beauty and depravity in even the most ordinary life, the workings of a universe we can never entirely understand -- were somehow exactly what I wanted to read right now... 'The Life of Chuck' is one of the oddest, most affecting stories I have read in a very long time...As sirens blare outside my Brooklyn window and the headlines grow more apocalyptic by the day, I might start working my way through King's backlist. He's good company in the dark." --Ruth Franklin, The New York Times Book Review "While this story collection had been percolating inside of Mr. King for years prior to its release, it is striking -- sometimes eerily so -- how necessary these stories feel today. 'If It Bleeds' continues the increasingly optimistic bent the author has displayed over the past decade, while still bearing those nightmarish touches at which he excels. When so much is uncertain, there's no small amount of comfort to be found in these tales -- and right now, comfort, in whatever form we can find it, is what we all need." --Wendeline O. Wright, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette "There's an oddly meta quality to reading Stephen King's new collection, IF IT BLEEDS, in the era of COVID-19. In addition to the expected supernatural horror themes, the four novellas are undergirded, to great effect, with more earthbound fears: the uncertainty of old age and approaching death; the vampiric nature of the 24-hour news cycle feeding the public's appetite for pain and disaster; the claustrophobia of being alone and ill during isolating weather; signs of the end times that would be disturbingly recognizable to even the most committed optimist...The jewel in the crown of IF IT BLEEDS, however, is the titular novella...King's choice to have an Outsider masquerading as a television reporter makes for an adroit vehicle to showcase the trite nature of evil." --Michael Rowe, The Boston Globe "When you're stuck at home needing fresh reading material..."If It Bleeds" will hit the mark." --St. Louis Post-Dispatch "King's four new novellas might be bite-sized, but they still shine with his brilliant ability to tingle our spines...King's genius is to temper his forays into the dark side of life with a sense of wonder about the world." --AARP Magazine "Suspenseful and chilling...This set of novellas is thought-provoking, terrifying, and, at times, outright charming, showcasing King's breadth as a master storyteller...a powerful addition to his megapopular oeuvre." --Booklist, STARRED review "The four never-before-published novellas in this collection represent horror master King at his finest, using the weird and uncanny to riff on mortality, the price of creativity, and the unpredictable consequences of material attachments...profoundly moving...King clearly loves his characters, and the care with which he develops their personalities draws the reader ineluctably into their deeply unsettling experiences. This excellent collection delivers exactly the kind of bravura storytelling King's readers expect." --Publishers Weekly, STARRED review "The master returns." --Kirkus Reviews, STARRED review About The Author Stephen King is the author of more than sixty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. His recent work includes If It Bleeds, The Institute, Elevation, The Outsider, Sleeping Beauties (cowritten with his son Owen King), and the Bill Hodges trilogy: End of Watch, Finders Keepers, and Mr. Mercedes (an Edgar Award winner for Best Novel and an AT & T Audience Network original television series). One of the New York Times 10 Best Books of the Year One of Barack Obama's Favorite Books of 2020 A Best Book of 2020 * Entertainment Weekly * Washington Post * O Magazine * New York Times Book Review * Publishers Weekly * NPR * The Economist * Shelf Awareness * Library Journal * St. Louis Post-Dispatch * Slate Finalist for the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction A deeply personal work about identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, Homeland Elegies blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of longing and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part social essay, part picaresque novel, at its heart it is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ayad Akhtar forges a new narrative voice to capture a country in which debt has ruined countless lives and the gods of finance rule, where immigrants live in fear, and where the nation's unhealed wounds wreak havoc around the world. Akhtar attempts to make sense of it all through the lens of a story about one family, from a heartland town in America to palatial suites in Central Europe to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, and spares no one--least of all himself--in the process. "Passionate, disturbing, unputdownable." --Salman Rushdie Review Quotes Homeland Elegies is the astonishing work of an absolutely brilliant writer. With exquisite prose and lacerating honesty, Ayad Akhtar reveals the intersections of art, finance, race, religion, academia, and empire, and in the process, shows us a troubled reflection of our country in the twenty-first century.--Phil Klay, author of Redeployment Homeland Elegies is urgent, lacerating writing of the first order from one of our finest playwrights. A sensation of a book.--Suketu Mehta, author of This Land Is Our Land: An Immigrant's Manifesto and Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found A beautifully rendered account of the struggle to belong in America today, Homeland Elegies takes you into the very heart of hyphenated identity. Erudite and vivid, its pages burst with vitality and intelligence.--Peter Godwin, author of When a Crocodile Eats the Sun and The Fear A triumph. Akhtar rages, he sings, he indicts, he falls in love, he sorrows, he dreams, he mourns, he transcribes!-and finally, he transmutes injustice into the sublimest art.--Joshua Ferris, author of The Dinner Party and Then We Came to the End An unflinchingly honest self-portrait by a brilliant Muslim-American writer, and, beyond that, an unsparing examination of both sides of that fraught hyphenated reality. Passionate, disturbing, unputdownable.--Salman Rushdie An urgent, intimate hybrid of memoir and fiction, Homeland Elegies thrusts us into the heart of a father-son relationship and, in the process-improbably-does nothing short of laying bare the broken heart of our American dream turned reality TV nightmare. The book's dissection of the deeply human desire to aspire and dream, and its illumination of the quest for success, brilliantly captures how we got to this exact moment in time and at what cost. Stunning.--A. M. Homes, author of This Book Will Save Your Life and Days of Awe At the core of this flashing, kinetic coil of a story -- part 1001 Nights, part Reality TV -- is a passionate, wrenching portrayal of Americans exiled into 'otherness'.--Jennifer Egan, author of Manhattan Beach and A Visit From the Goon Squad Ayad Akhtar offers up his heart and life with an honesty that astonishes. Never have I experienced such a reading thrill. I put down this novel trembling at the courage it took to write it, and determined to be a better American for having read it.--Maria Semple, author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette With Homeland Elegies, Ayad Akhtar has found the perfect hybrid form for his exuberant, insightful, and wickedly entertaining epic about Muslim immigrants and their American-born children. A deeply moving father-and-son story unfolds against tumultuous current events in a book that anyone wanting to know how we as a nation got where we are today -- and into what dark wood we might be heading tomorrow -- should read.--Sigrid Nunez, author of The Friend About The Author Ayad Akhtar is a playwright, novelist, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Seven Days in June - by Tia Williams (Hardcover)
Turbulence - by David Szalay (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 160Genre: Fiction + Literature GenresSub-Genre: LiteraryFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Scribner Book CompanyAge Range: AdultAuthor: David SzalayLanguage: English Book Synopsis *A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice* A "masterful" (The Washington Post), "cathartic" (Star Tribune, Minneapolis), novel about twelve people, mostly strangers, and the surprising ripple effect each one has on the life of the next as they cross paths while in transit around the world--from the Booker Prize-shortlisted author of All That Man Is. In this "compelling" (The Christian Science Monitor), "crisp and clever" (Vanity Fair) novel, Szalay's diverse protagonists circumnavigate the planet in twelve flights, from London to Madrid, from Dakar to Sao Paulo, to Toronto, to Delhi, to Doha, en route to see lovers or estranged siblings, aging parents, baby grandchildren, or nobody at all. Along the way, they experience the full range of human emotions from loneliness to love and, knowingly or otherwise, change each other in one brief, electrifying interaction after the next. Written with magic and economy, "Szalay explores the miraculous ability of our shared humanity to lift us from loneliness" (Esquire) and delivers a dazzling portrait of the interconnectedness of the modern world. Review Quotes Praise for Turbulence "Masterful. . . . Its intensity is surprising. . . . Much of the fun of Turbulence is discovering how Szalay will upend the reader's perspective of a character from one chapter to the next... Clever... Turbulence suggests that such events might shape us, but they don't define us. Take a good look, Szalay is saying, and do something about it."-- "The Washington Post""Turbulence is a sleek machine with a cool tone... Szalay is a gifted writer."-- "Dwight Garner, New York Times""Turbulence is somehow light yet also quite moving, offering readers deep, empathetic connections with men and women whose lives differ dramatically from those of one another. Szalay's range is impressive, given the tendency of many novelists to circumscribe their stories within a particular culture or social circle, usually the one most familiar to them. By contrast, Szalay draws his characters from a variety of nationalities, economic circumstances, religious identities, and stages of life, yet all are distinct individuals who are entirely believable and captivating. . . . Szalay is particularly adept at immersing us in the consciousness of men who, whether doctors or gardeners, rage against their powerlessness in the wider world and in the smaller world of their personal lives. That he does so with such economy is what makes Turbulence masterful... Compelling... I wanted more time with every person in Szalay's book." -- "Christian Science Monitor""[Szalay is] a master... Turbulence, told so limpidly that it may seem quite slight, is a chilling achievement."-- "Evening Standard""A Canterbury Talesfor our modern era." -- "Lit Hub""A (world) tour de force, an exploration in fiction of the concept of six degrees of separation. . . . The chapters are tiny cross sections of lives, lovingly examined under the writer's microscope. The result is a book that is high concept but--thanks to Szalay's gift for compression and the same empathetic imagination that was on display in All That Man Is--never gimmicky. Szalay has devised an ingenious way to accommodate enormous range in a miniature form. Subtle, smart--a triumph."-- "Kirkus, starred reviews""A satisfying, globetrotting narrative."-- "AM New York""Crisp and clever. . . . Writing with a restraint that comes close to minimalism, Szalay boils down each moment to its most vital and crystalline essence."-- "Vanity Fair""Deftly wrought... reads like a turbo-charged daisy-chain... appallingly immersive."-- "Daily Mail""Elegant... Impressive... Page by page, Szalay's mixture of directness and withholding looks increasingly masterly."-- "The Financial Times""Especially striking is how easily [Szalay] inhabits diverse perspectives.... He pulls off this imaginative feat because his focus is on age-old themes of mortality and desire... A willingness to leave dots unjoined is one of the virtues that make Mr. Szalay's fiction so rewarding."-- "The Economist""Impressive... Swift, surprising... Skillfully done."-- "The Times Literary Supplement""In this patchwork of deeply felt vignettes, Szalay turns a loving eye on 12 disparate strangers, each of them drawn together while in transit around the world. As their lives intersect in far-flung cities ranging from London to Dakar, Szalay explores the miraculous ability of our shared humanity to lift us from loneliness."-- "Esquire""It is at once uplifting and humbling, the bittersweet essence of life itself." -- "The Toronto Star""Presents us with a series of lives that feel at once profoundly particular and yet also emblematic, a portrait of our species at a time of crisis... What Turbulence shares with its predecessor is Szalay's characteristically effortless prose, his ability to distill lives into vignettes, the sense of an author whose curiosity about his fellow humans is boundless. The 21st century, Turbulence suggests, is taking place several miles above the earth, or in overlit and anonymous airports. Szalay is our greatest chronicler of these rootless, tradeworn places, and the desperate, itinerant lives of those who inhabit them."-- "The Guardian""Profound... Unexpectedly moving... Szalay's gift for inhabiting entirely different lives is as remarkable and spooky as ever."-- "The Times""Szalay has given us some brilliantly rendered slices of life to enjoy... there's barely a story here which isn't in some way engaging and absorbing, the author's compassion and involvement with his characters shining through even in their times of deepest isolation."-- "Scotland Herald""Szalay innovates in this ingenious new book... He knows about people... Stark and spare, Turbulence is an impressive novel."-- "The Spectator""Szalay's spare writing packs an emotional punch, his impressionistic sketches capturing in just a few pages the pivotal moments of entire lives. Turbulence is an inventive examination of the ties that bind us together and the ease with which they can be broken." -- "Booklist""What is perhaps the most clever and profound about this book is how the characters in each chapter are linked to the one that precedes it, coming full circle at the end." -- "Orange County Register""What ties these stories together, 12 of them in total, is that they all begin or end at an airport. Through this concept, Turbulence shows the ways in which these major thoroughfares act as spaces where any and all worlds may converge, often in profound ways. Through characters who are diverse in national identity, religion, socio-economic status, background and circumstance, Szalay is able to evoke a range of emotions perhaps unavailable to a more traditionally organized novel. The contrasting perspectives of Szalay's characters are what make this novel conceptually impressive, but it is the individual characters who animate the novel from page to page. Because the time with each character is so brief, readers are transported directly into the midst of some of their greatest crises, allowing access to an intimate connection it might otherwise take several hundred pages to build. Written in clear and penetrating prose, Szalay's Turbulence is a refreshing and empathetic take on the cosmopolitan novel."-- "Shelf Awareness, starred review"

Number of Pages: 400Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: RoyaltyFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Hodder & StoughtonAge Range: AdultAuthor: Hugo VickersLanguage: English About the Book One of the most beautiful and brilliant women of her time, Gladys Deacon dazzled and puzzled the glittering social circles in which she moved. Born in Paris to American parents in 1881, Gladys emerged from a traumatic childhood - her father having shot her mother's lover dead when Gladys was only eleven - to captivate and inspire some of the greatest literary and artistic names of the Belle Epoque. Marcel Proust wrote of her, 'I never saw a girl with such beauty, such magnificent intelligence, such goodness and charm.' Berenson considered marrying her, Rodin and Monet befriended her, Boldini painted her and Epstein sculpted her. She inspired love from diverse Dukes and Princes, and the interest of women such as the Comtesse Greffulhe and Gertrude Stein. In 1921, when Gladys was forty, she achieved the wish she had held since the age of fourteen to marry the 9th Duke of Marlborough, then freshly divorced from fellow American Consuelo Vanderbilt. Gladys's circle now included Lady Ottoline Morrell, Lytton Strachey and Winston Churchill, who described her as 'a strange, glittering being'. But life at Blenheim was not a success: when the Duke evicted her in 1933, the only remaining signs of Gladys were two sphinxes bearing her features on the west terraces and mysterious blue eyes in the grand portico. She became a recluse, and the wax injections she'd had to straighten her nose when she was 22 had by now ravaged her beauty. Gladys was to spend her last years in the psycho-geriatric ward of a mental hospital, where she was discovered by a young Hugo Vickers. Intrigued and compelled to unmask the truth of her mysterious life, Vickers visited her over the course of two years, eventually publishing Gladys, Duchess of Marlborough, a biography of her life - and his first book - in 1979, two years after Gladys's death. Forty years on, Vickers has now completely rewritten and revised his original biography, updating it with previously unavailable material and drawing on his own personal research all over Europe and America. He once asked Gladys, 'Where is Gladys Deacon?' She answered him slowly, 'Gladys Deacon? . . . She never existed.' The Sphinx is a fascinating portrait of this elusive but brilliant woman who was at the centre of a now bygone era of wealth and privilege - and a tribute to one of the brightest stars of her age. Letters to a Young Athlete - by Chris Bosh (Hardcover)
Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)Weight: 1 PoundsNumber of Pages: 256Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: GeneralFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Penguin PressAuthor: Chris BoshAge Range: AdultLanguage: English Book Synopsis A legendary NBA player shares his remarkable story, infused with hard-earned wisdom about the journey to self-mastery from a life at the highest level of professional sports Chris Bosh, an eleven-time All-Star, two-time NBA champion, Olympic gold medalist, and the league's Global Ambassador, had his playing days cut short at their prime by a freak medical condition. His extraordinary career ended not at a time of his choosing but "in a doctor's office in the middle of the afternoon." Forced to reckon with how to find meaning to carry forward, he found himself looking back over his path, from a teenager in Dallas who balanced basketball with the high school robotics club to the pinnacle of the NBA and beyond. Reflecting on all he learned from a long list of basketball legends, from LeBron and Kobe to Pat Riley and Coach K, he saw that his important lessons weren't about basketball so much as the inner game of success--right attitude, right commitment, right flow within a team. Now he shares that journey, giving us a fascinating view from the inside of what greatness feels like and what it takes, formulated as a series of letters to younger people coming up and to all wisdom seekers. A timeless gift for anyone in pursuit of excellence, Letters to a Young Athlete offers a proven path for taming your inner voice and making it your ally, through the challenges of failure and the challenges of success alike. Review Quotes "On the court, Chris Bosh was a rare superstar who put his team above himself. His book is a wise, candid look behind the scenes at what made him great and how he made others even greater. Animal - by Lisa Taddeo (Hardcover)
Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)Weight: 1 PoundsNumber of Pages: 336Genre: Fiction + Literature GenresSub-Genre: LiteraryFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Avid Reader Press / Simon & SchusterAuthor: Lisa TaddeoAge Range: AdultLanguage: English Book Synopsis Lisa Taddeo illustrates one woman's exhilarating transformation from prey into predator in Animal, the "ferociously beautiful" (Library Journal) debut novel from the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon Three Women, named to more than thirty best-of-the-year lists and hailed as "a dazzling achievement" (Los Angeles Times) and "a heartbreaking, gripping, astonishing masterpiece" (Esquire). I am depraved. I hope you like me. Joan has spent a lifetime enduring the cruelties of men. But when one of them commits a shocking act of violence in front of her, she flees New York City in search of Alice, the only person alive who can help her make sense of her past. In the sweltering hills above Los Angeles, Joan unravels the horrific event she witnessed as a child--that has haunted her every waking moment--while forging the power to finally strike back. Animal is a depiction of female rage at its rawest, and a visceral exploration of the fallout from a male-dominated society. Review Quotes "Riveting . . . Propulsive, erotic, emotional . . . Joan is almost impossible to look away from on every page." --Kirkus Reviews "Taddeo creates impressive suspense. . . . A provocative novel of sex, love, and rage for readers drawn to psychologically rich, feminist literary fiction." --Booklist "Fearless, sexy, brutal, and just forensically observed." --Jojo Moyes, author of The Giver of Stars PRAISE FOR LISA TADDEO AND THREE WOMEN: "A breathtaking and important book . . . What a fine thing it is to be enthralled by another writer's sentences. To be stunned by her intellect and heart." --Cheryl Strayed "I can't remember the last time a book affected me as profoundly as Three Women. Lisa Taddeo is a tireless reporter, a brilliant writer, and a storyteller possessed of almost supernatural humanity. As far as I'm concerned, this is a nonfiction literary masterpiece at the same level as In Cold Blood--and just as suspenseful, bone-chilling, and harrowing, in its own way. I know already that I will never stop thinking about the women profiled in this story--about their sexual desire, their emotional pain, their strength, their losses. I saw myself in all of them. Truly, Three Women is an extraordinary offering." --Elizabeth Gilbert "An astonishing work of literary reportage . . . As Lisa Taddeo writes about her subjects, the women she uses to map out an anthropological, humane, passionate study of female desire, she seems almost to inhabit them. . . . A fascinating appraisal of a subject few writers have approached so intently." --Sophie Gilbert, The Atlantic "The hottest book of the summer . . . Taddeo spent eight years reporting this groundbreaking book, moving across the country and back again in her staggeringly intimate foray into the sexual lives and desires of three 'ordinary' women. Tragedy and despair lurk in each of their stories, but Taddeo's dynamic writing brings them all to breathtaking life." --Entertainment Weekly "Taddeo spent a decade immersed in the sex lives of three ordinary American woman. . . . The result is the most in-depth look at the female sex drive and all its accompanying social, emotional, reproductive, and anthropological implications that's been published in decades. But it's also fully immersive: gonzo journalism without the machismo." --New York "A dazzling achievement . . . Three Women burns a flare-bright path through the dark woods of women's sexuality. In sentences that are as sharp--and bludgeoning, at times--as an ax, she retains the accuracy and integrity of nonfiction but risks the lyrical depths of prose and poetry." --Margaret Wappler, Los Angeles Times "A revolutionary look at women's desire, this feat of journalism reveals three women who are carnal, brave, and beautifully flawed." --People (Book of the Week) "An extraordinary study of female desire . . . To write this kind of nonfiction--it's true, but reads like a novel--Taddeo smartly employs not only interviews but also diary entries, legal documents, letters, emails and text messages. The result is a book as exhaustively reported and as elegantly written as Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forevers or Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's Random Family. . . . Taddeo's language is at its best--sublime, even--when she describes the pain of desire left unfulfilled." --Elizabeth Flock, The Washington Post "Three Women reads like a nonfiction novel in the deeply embedded, richly detailed vein of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood or Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air. . . . It's Taddeo's deep, almost feverish commitment to detail and context that elevates the stories, making them feel not just painfully real but revelatory. In her efforts to explore 'the nuances of desire that hold the truth of who we are at our rawest moments, ' she actually does much more: By peeling back the layers with such clear-eyed compassion, Taddeo illuminates the essential, elemental mystery of what it is to be a woman in the world." --Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly "Three Women is a battle cry. . . . Taddeo never judges. She doesn't slip into pseudopsychological frameworks for sex. She inhabits her subjects. And if you think her topic sounds a little louche, or isn't quite your thing, the true magic of this book may lie less in the subject matter and more in the style. . . . It's the literary brilliance of the book that will knock you back-how she channels these women's voices through her own. . . . For anyone who thinks they know what women want, this book is an alarm, and its volume is turned all the way up." --Lea Carpenter, Time "Searing . . . The stories of Taddeo's subjects, Sloane, Lina and Maggie, all feature the illicit--threesomes, dominance and submission, underage sex--and each includes a hefty dose of good old-fashioned adultery. . . . The result is effective and affecting. . . . Taddeo reveals an avalanche of evidence, as if we needed more, that the cozy comforts of marriage and its defining, confining attribute, monogamy, provide the perfect petri dish for combustible sex--with someone other than your spouse." --New York Times Book Review "If it is not the best book about women and desire that has ever been written, then it is certainly the best book about the subject that I have ever come across. When I picked it up, I felt I'd been waiting half my life to read it; when I put it down, it was as though I had been disemboweled. . . . There isn't a woman alive who won't recognize--her stomach lurching, her heart beating wildly--something of what Maggie, Lina, and Sloane go through." --Rachel Cooke, The Guardian "A heartbreaking, gripping, astonishing masterpiece, Three Women is destined to join the canon both of journalistic excellence and feminist literature." --Esquire About The Author Lisa Taddeo is the author of Three Women. She has contributed to The New York Times, New York, Esquire, Elle, Glamour, and many other publications. Her nonfiction has been included in the anthologies Best American Political Writing and Best American Sports Writing, and her short stories have won two Pushcart Prizes. She lives with her husband and daughter in New England.

How the Word Is Passed - by Clint Smith (Hardcover)
Dimensions (Overall): 9 Inches (H) x 1 Inches (W) x 6 Inches (D)Weight: 1 PoundsNumber of Pages: 352Genre: HistorySub-Genre: African AmericanFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Little Brown and CompanyAuthor: Clint SmithAge Range: AdultLanguage: English Book Synopsis "We need this book." --Ibram X. Kendi, #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to be an Anti-Racist The Atlantic staff writer and poet Clint Smith's revealing, contemporary portrait of America as a slave owning nation Beginning in his hometown of New Orleans, Clint Smith leads the reader on an unforgettable tour of monuments and landmarks--those that are honest about the past and those that are not--that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation's collective history, and ourselves. It is the story of the Monticello Plantation in Virginia, the estate where Thomas Jefferson wrote letters espousing the urgent need for liberty while enslaving more than four hundred people. It is the story of the Whitney Plantation, one of the only former plantations devoted to preserving the experience of the enslaved people whose lives and work sustained it. It is the story of Angola, a former plantation-turned-maximum-security prison in Louisiana that is filled with Black men who work across the 18,000-acre land for virtually no pay. And it is the story of Blandford Cemetery, the final resting place of tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers. A deeply researched and transporting exploration of the legacy of slavery and its imprint on centuries of American history, How the Word Is Passed illustrates how some of our country's most essential stories are hidden in plain view--whether in places we might drive by on our way to work, holidays such as Juneteenth, or entire neighborhoods like downtown Manhattan, where the brutal history of the trade in enslaved men, women, and children has been deeply imprinted. Informed by scholarship and brought to life by the story of people living today, Smith's debut work of nonfiction is a landmark of reflection and insight that offers a new understanding of the hopeful role that memory and history can play in making sense of our country and how it has come to be. Review Quotes "This book is beautiful and timely and important. How the Word is Passed reveals so much about race and nation and how we've made this world without feeling like Smith is trying to. I've felt compelled to take it everywhere I've gone. And it's taken me so many places--to confederate cemeteries, to prisons and plantations, to the door of no return. It has made me think about memory and history and the legacy of slavery and commemoration and how we forget, like no other book before it."--Reuben Miller, author of Halfway Home "[A] powerful and diligent exploration of the realities and ongoing consequences of slavery in America."--Booklist (starred) "A Black journalist and poet calls for a reconsideration of the way America teaches its history of slavery....A brilliant, vital work about 'a crime that is still unfolding.'"--Kirkus (starred review) "A beautifully written, evocative, and timely meditation on the way slavery is commemorated in the United States."--Annette Gordon-Reed, Carl M. Loeb University Professor at Harvard and Pulitzer prize-winning author of The Hemingses of Monticello "In this stunning book, Clint Smith takes readers on a necessary journey. Like the best of the tour guides he meets, he tells us the truth with conviction and compassion, and he has much to teach, both about the history of slavery across America and about how to pass the word on." --W. Caleb McDaniel, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Sweet Taste of Liberty: A True Story of Slavery and Restitution in America "A moving and perceptive survey of landmarks that reckon, or fail to reckon, with the legacy of slavery in America... this is an essential consideration of how America's past informs its present."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Clint Smith has given us a new lens for seeing the spaces we inhabit, the stories they tell, and the people who tell those stories. How the Word is Passed sheds light on the contested narratives beneath the surface of our collective national identity, inviting us to dig a little deeper, reminding us never to take received histories for granted."--Eve L. Ewing, author of 1919 and Ghosts in the Schoolyard "There is perhaps no greater challenge than convincing a nation to remember what it would rather choose to forget. Clint Smith, one of our most thoughtful writers and thinkers, skillfully documents how echoes of enslavement remain everywhere. The question is whether we have the collective will to reckon with the realities of our past in order to build a better future. How the Word Is Passed is a vital, desperately-needed contribution to that reckoning."--Wesley Lowery, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author of They Can't Kill Us All Named a Most Anticipated Title of 2021 by Time The Millions The Rumpus Buzzfeed Apple Book Publishers Weekly Library Journal A Readers Digest Book by Black Authors to Know About "A work of moral force and humility, How the Word is Passed offers a compelling account of the history and memory of slavery in America. Writing from Confederate Army cemeteries, former plantations, modern-day prisons, and other historical sites, Clint Smith moves seamlessly between past and present, revealing how slavery is remembered and misremembered--and why it matters. Engaging and wise, this book combines history and reportage, poem and memoir. It is a deep lesson and a reckoning."--Matthew Desmond, Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology and Pulitzer prize winning author of Evicted "Smith tells his stories with the soul of a poet and the heart of an educator. Smith's ambitious book is fueled by a humble sense of duty: he sought the wisdom of those who tell of slavery's legacy "outside traditional classrooms and beyond the pages of textbooks"; public historians who "have dedicated their lives to sharing this history with others." Smith channels the spirit of Toni Morrison here; the writer as one to pass on the word so that it is never forgotten."--The Millions "Clint Smith chronicles in vivid and meditative prose his travels to historical sites that are truth-telling or deceiving visitors about slavery. Humans enslaved Black people, and then too often enslaved history. But How the Word Is Passed frees history, frees humanity to reckon honestly with the legacy of slavery. We need this book." --Ibram X. Kendi, National Book Award-winning and #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Be an Anti-Racist and Stamped from the Beginning "In reexamining neighborhoods, holidays and quotidian sites, Smith forces us to reconsider what we think we know about American history."--Time About The Author Clint Smith is a staff writer at The Atlantic and the author of the poetry collection Counting Descent.
