Death Cab for Cutie is an American alternative rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington, in 1997. The band comprises Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar, piano), Chris Walla (guitar, production, keyboards), Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums). Death Cab for Cutie's music has been labeled as indie rock, indie pop, and alternative rock, and is noted for its use of unconventional instruments as well as Gibbard's unique lyrical style. The group takes its name from a song by The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band featured in The Beatles' 1967 film, Magical Mystery Tour.

Transatlanticism is their fourth studio album. It was released on October 7, 2003, by Barsuk Records. The album was written mostly by lead singer Ben Gibbard and produced by Chris Walla. Upon its release, Transatlanticism received universal acclaim from music critics and charted at number 97 on the Billboard 200. It has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of 500,000 copies in the United States.

Prior to the album's release, Ben Gibbard stated: "...unlike The Photo Album, I feel like this record is definitely more like a proper album. We’ve tried to construct it with transitions of songs going in and out of each other, and I think it's a little bit more expansive than the last record." The album is Jason McGerr's first as the band's drummer.

In celebration of the classic 2003 album’s 10th birthday, Transatlanticism is available on vinyl after several years out of print via Barsuk Records. The album's limited time MP3 download will include the original demos for each of the album’s 11 songs, none of which has ever been released before. They are an intimate peek into the landmark album’s genesis, and many are drastically different from the beloved final studio versions.

"Released at the peak of their career as indie heavyweights, Death Cab for Cutie’s fourth album was their most aspirational yet, as the Seattle band stretched beyond angular, tightly wound jangle-pop to explore more nuanced tones and moods. Lush and bombastic (especially on 'The New Year,' 'Transatlanticism' and 'Tiny Vessels'), the album demonstrated multi-instrumentalist Chris Walla's growing prowess as a producer. But it was singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard's lyrics that made Transatlanticism their master work, as he distilled post-collegiate malaise, the feeling of distance from loved ones and apathy about romance into songs that peeled back the skin on the place – as mentioned in 'Title And Registration,' 'where disappointment and regret collide.'" - Rolling Stone
