About the Book
Special Centenary Edition. The centenary year of 2017 for this legendary team saw them recognised in the most magnificent way and a happy ending for these pioneering Lancashire Lassies has finally been achieved. They were honoured with the first Blue Plaque in the world for a women's football team.Book Synopsis
In a League of Their Own! is the true story of an ordinary group of female munition workers from Preston who achieved the extra-ordinary. The unique history of the Dick, Kerr Ladies lay buried for far too long as they became football's best kept secret. They set the football world alight during the First World War, and despite an FA ban in 1921, the team continued to play until 1965 and raised in excess of £10 million for charity.
The centenary year of 2017 for this legendary team saw them recognised in the most magnificent way and a happy ending for these pioneering Lancashire Lassies has finally been achieved. They were honoured with the first Blue Plaque in the world for a women's football team, and they returned home to Deepdale where their journey began on Christmas Day 1917, when the dream of a permanent memorial dedicated to them actually became a reality.
Review Quotes
Congratulations Gail for all you continue to do to champion the memory of these wonderful women's football pioneers. Their story is so inspirational and should never be forgotten. I am so very pleased that we at The FA were so heavily involved in the Centenary Year. The opportunity to join with you, some of the players, their families and the many women's football supporters in celebrating the many great achievements of these national treasures has been a joy for all involved. Baroness Sue Campbell, FA Director of Women's Football
The book successfully achieves two things; firstly it documents dates, fixtures, players and scores, putting the women's game on record; and secondly it tells a real story about real people who have sadly now passed away or are approaching old age. It is a very fascinating account, easy to read and worth buying. On the Ball
