Number of Pages: 272Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: Sociology of SportsFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Little Brown and CompanyAge Range: AdultAuthor: Joan RyanLanguage: English About the Book Does team chemistry actually exist? Is there scientific or mathematical proof? Is team chemistry as real and relevant as on-base percentages and wins above replacement? Team chemistry alone won't win a World Series, but talent alone won't win it, either. And by interviewing more than 100 players, coaches, managers, and statisticians, as well as over five years of extensive research in neuroscience, biology, physiology, and psychology, the author proves that the social and emotional state of a team does affect performance. Grit, passion, selflessness, and effort matter -- but never underestimate the power of chemistry. Book Synopsis From baseball to biology, an award-winning journalist highlights the power of team chemistry in this "terrific" data-driven investigation of human relationships (Billie Jean King).Does team chemistry actually exist? Is there scientific or mathematical proof? Is team chemistry as real and relevant as on-base percentages and wins above replacement? In Joan Ryan's groundbreaking book we discover that the answer to all of the above is a resounding yes. As Ryan puts it, team chemistry, or the combination of biological and social forces that boosts selfless effort among more players over more days of a season, is what drives sports teams toward a common goal, encouraging the players to be the best versions of themselves. These are the elements of teams that make them "click," the ones that foster trust and respect, and push players to exceed their own potential when they work well together.Team chemistry alone won't win a World Series, but talent alone won't win it, either. And by interviewing more than 100 players, coaches, managers, and statisticians, as well as over five years of extensive research in neuroscience, biology, physiology, and psychology, Ryan proves that the social and emotional state of a team does affect performance. Grit, passion, selflessness, and effort matter -- but never underestimate the power of chemistry. Review Quotes "Ever since the wave of analytics began to dominate decision-making in baseball, many insiders have been worried that human connections were being marginalized and stripped out of the game. In a compelling way, Intangibles settles the debate about the merits and validity of the role team chemistry plays in enhancing individual, and ultimately team performance."--Vince Gennaro, President of the Societyfor American Baseball Research (SABR) and Associate Professor at the NYU TischInstitute for Sports Management, Media, and Business"Joan Ryan writes the way we all wish we could: clearly, simply and powerfully, with nothing wasted. Intangibles is a sports book but it's really a mystery. In a time when players are reduced to assets and data, Joan returns the people to the room. How they interact - or don't - is so much of why we watch. This really is a terrific book."--HowardBryant, author of The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron"Team chemistry is no longer valued in baseball today, which is a big mistake. It is crucial for every team; it is critical to winning. Joan Ryan explains what team chemistry actually is and how it affects performance in this fascinating and important book. The voices in here are powerful. This should be required reading for every general manager of every major league team.''--Tim Kurkjian, seniorbaseball writer/analyst, ESPN"With her exhaustive research and breezy prose, Ryan has created something unique and lasting."--The Athletic"Engaging...good reading, especially for baseball fans." --Spectrum Culture"A book mixing the deeply emotional with the highly technical, presented with the kind of sensitive, authoritative touch readers came to expect from Ryan."--San Francisco Chronicle"In this entrancing book, Joan Ryan goes on a deep dive into both the human brain and the locker room and delivers a compelling, surprising look at the nature of team chemistry, and its dramatic impact on the sports we love. Outstanding work."--Rob Neyer, author of Powerball"Nuanced...complex...All of this makes for a mind-opening study that extends far beyond the confines of any ballpark."--Booklist"In a laboratory, chemistry can be defined. But when it comes to personal and team dynamics, chemistry is among the things about which it can be said: "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it." While a precise definition will always be elusive, Joan Ryan's lively, thoughtful, and carefully reported book brings us much closer to an understanding of what team chemistry is and can be."--Bob Costas"Team chemistry is real and it impacts performance. Now we know the why and the how. With terrific storytelling and deep research into the science of human relationships, Joan Ryan has delivered the seminal work on the capacity of teams - in sports, business or otherwise - to summon the best from one another.''--Billie Jean King, founder of the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative About the Author Joan Ryan is an award-winning journalist and the author of four books. Her groundbreaking book Little Girls in Pretty Boxes was named one of the Top 100 Sports Books of All Time by Sports Illustrated and one of the Top 50 Sports Books of All Time by the Guardian. Book Synopsis Patagonia's Cerro Torre, considered by many the most beautiful peak in the world, draws the finest and most devoted technical alpinists to its climbing challenges. But controversy has swirled around this ice-capped peak since Cesare Maestri claimed first ascent in 1959. Since then a debate has raged, with world-class climbers attempting to retrace his route but finding only contradictions. This chronicle of hubris, heroism, controversies and epic journeys offers a glimpse into the human condition, and why some pursue extreme endeavors that at face value have no worth. From the Back Cover "A Shriek Turned to Stone" Mountaineer Reinhold Messner's description of Cerro Torre, considered by many the most beautiful and compelling mountain in the world, articulates the challenge and controversy that has enveloped this mountain since Cesare Maestri claimed first ascent in 1959. At the wind-scoured southern tip of Argentina, between the vast ice cap and the rolling estepas of Patagonia, rises a 10,262-foot tower of ice and rock named Cerro Torre. Considered by many the most beautiful and compelling mountain in the world, it draws the finest and most devoted technical alpinists from around the globe. Reinhold Messner, the greatest mountaineer in history, called it "a shriek turned to stone." But controversy has swirled around Cerro Torre since 1959, when Italian climber Cesare Maestri claimed its first ascent. His partner died on the descent, and generations of world-class climbers attempting to retrace his route have found only contradictions. In 1970, enraged by the doubts and obsessed with proving his success, Maestri used a gasoline-powered air compressor to hammer hundreds of bolts, spaced to be used as ladders, into Cerro Torre's flanks. The Compressor Route instantly became one of the most contentious routes in the climbing world--and, in the decades that followed, it became the most popular route on the mountain. In 2012, when two young, talented, and idealistic climbers, Hayden Kennedy and Jason Kruk, removed many of Maestri's bolts, the controversy erupted anew. What role should equipment play in the accomplishments of climbers? Who has the right to alter a route, or a mountain? What is the impact of history on our ethics in the mountains? And, most fundamentally, what is the point of alpinism: the summit or the climb? This chronicle of hubris, heroism, principle, and epic journeys offers a glimpse into the human condition, and explores reasons why some pursue extreme endeavors that at face value have no worth. Review Quotes Winner for Banff Mountain Book Awards, 2015, Mountain and Wilderness Literature -- Nonfiction The contrast between the old and the new, very centered opinions by the author and a twist at the end that I was certainly not expecting made it one of the best mountain books I ever read. Cheers to Cordes and his brilliantly written book Thecampsiteblog.com The Tower by Kelly Cordes is one, if not the best modern mountaineering book I've had the pleasure to read in a long time. Careful though. This is a book that is not easy to sit down. Sad part is, the book does has an ending. coldthistle.com I simply loved this book, and I'm a weary veteran of one-too-many armchair mountaineering reads, not as easily impressed as I once was by any slab of paper with a mountain on the cover and photos inside of manly men with frost in their beards. I tore through The Tower in two nights, this with a newborn in the house: it's a classic. climbingterms.com Kelly Cordes has penned one of the most fascinating and well-written chronicles of Cerro Torre, one of the most beautiful, infamous and important mountains in the world. See You Tomorrow - by Jeremy Evans (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 224Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: Winter SportsFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Falcon Press PublishingAge Range: AdultAuthor: Jeremy EvansLanguage: English About the Book Marco Siffredi was the first person to make a complete snowboard descent of Mount Everest in 2001, and was regarded by many as the world's best snowboarder. But the following year in 2002, Marco mysteriously disappeared on Everest while attempting a more difficult route known as Hornbein Couloir, an unrelentingly steep, difficult to access route with a high failure rate. Using exclusive never-before-granted interviews with family and friends, Evans aims to solve Everest's greatest mystery in nearly a century while exploring Marco's pursuit of a dream, his love of freedom and adventure, and how his French family was forever altered by his loss. Review Quotes NetGalley Reviews 5 stars Last updated on 30 Jan 2021 "See You Tomorrow by Jeremy Evans is a fascinating look into the life of French snowboarder and mountaineer, Marco Siffredi. While Evans focuses on Siffredi's disappearance as he tried to snowboard down Everest, we also learn a bit about Siffredi's family and what he was like growing up. Marco Siffredi was a child prodigy when it came to snowboarding. He was so good at it that in only six years he went from being a novice to being considered the best in the world. He was fascinated with the impossible and he said "If we don't do stuff that is a bit crazy at 20, we're not going to start at 50." Siffredi did the crazy stuff; he decided he wanted to snowboard down Everest. He summited Everest on May 23, 2001 but was unable to snowboard down Horbein Couloir, the steepest descent from the summit, because of snow conditions, so he came down a less dangerous way, becoming the first person to make a complete descent of Mount Everest on a snowboard. So on September 8, 2002, at age 23, he decided to try again. He reached the summit taking three times as long as he had done it previously and even though the sherpas accompanying him tried to talk him out of it, he began to descend Everest on the Horbein Couloir route on his snowboard. Marco Siffredi was never seen again. People disappear on Everest regularly, that is not unusual, but what is unusual with Siffredi are the rumors surrounding his disappearance. The theories range from he fell into a ravine to his sister believing that he made it down and is still alive today. Evans did extensive research on this book, and was granted first ever interviews with Siffredi's family and friends. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with a digital copy of this book prior to publication in exchange for my review. This review is being posted immediately to my GoodReads account and will be posted on Amazon and Barnes and Noble upon the book's publication." --Donna Boyd, Educator at Reading Enrichment/Literacy Group (Homeschooling) 5 stars Last updated on 19 Feb 2021 "Thank you to NetGalley and Jeremy Evans for giving me an ARC of this book. "It was very interesting because it essentially had three distinct subjects. First there is, of course, the biography of a young, dynamic and highly skilled athlete. Second is the history of Everest and the surrounding area. Third is the history of climbing and other extreme snow sports. "I liked that the author didn't just tell us about this young guy who seems to have no impulse control and who is fairly oblivious to danger. All of that is very interesting and kind of fun in an "I wish I was that brave" kind of way. But the author then adds in the dynamics of he town of Chamonix where he lived and learned to ski, climb, snowboard and guide tourists up the mountain. Then he gives us a history of other men who climbed Everest and also never came back, or died on the mountain and were brought down. It is an interesting intermingling that gives a broader picture of Marco and his life." --Fianna MacGregor, Educator at Whitman Legal 4 stars Last updated on 01 Mar 2021 "As an avid hiker, ice climber and mountain trekker I have always been enamoured by tales from "the 8000ers". I myself will never be up to the task of climbing one, but I've always enjoyed following the challenges and setbacks of those who do. I often read these stores via Alan Annette (referenced in this book), explorersweb, Outside Magazine or other trekking publications. Where others enjoy "true crime" I do admit to finding myself fixated with the tales of those challenged or lost on these peaks. My first introduction to these tales were Jon Krakauer's 'Into Thin Air' and the 1998 Everest IMAX film, and since then I've read a wide range and collection of these accounts of mountain (mis)adventures. "See You Tomorrow reads like a hybrid between the online articles, and longer books I've encountered on the subject. I mean that in the best way possible. Jeremy Evans writes with the casual nature of someone integrated into the climbing and mountaineering community, who has first hand knowledge and experience he relates back to the story being told. I was in the peak of my high school ski-bum years when Marco Siffredi made the first Everest descent, and then subsequently disappeared the following year but until reading this book I didn't know the genuine nature of his personality, or the complexities of his relationship with Chamonix. Jeremy Evans is finally doing what the community should have done long ago, celebrating this tremendous athlete and heartfelt human for the accomplishments he achieved and life he lived. I also thought intertwining Marco's story with his favourite character The Little Prince was incredibly successful thematically. I wouldn't usually describe a book about someone's tragic disappearance as "heartwarming" but I appreciated that Jeremy focused more on Marco's life than his death. "I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in outdoor adventure sports, especially snowboarding (or skiing), mountaineering, trekking or even those with an interest in reading well written biographies. I truly appreciate the opportunity to read this digital ARC provided by NetGalley, I was not compensated for this review." --Katherine Job, Reviewer at Garddwest 4 stars Last updated on 02 May 2021 "This is the story of Marco Siffredi a young man from Chamonix France who at the age of 23 passed away on Mount Everest or so they believe. Chamonix is famous for being the birth place of mountaineering and extreme skiing. This is a beautiful place for the tourist and the rich and beautiful but it is also a place that mothers have fear every time the rescue helicopter passes overhead. Marco did not involved with climbing until his teenage years but he seemed to have a natural gift which rubbed those who had been snowboarding their whole life. But Marco was the type of person people could not help be attracted to as he was genuine and just happy go lucky. The story should this when he was preparing for the assent of Everest he was riding his skateboard around and giving children rides. Base on first appearance you would not guess this with his piercings and green or purple hair. This book is a good look at mountaineering along with the extreme snowboarding there is adventure and sadness but this is a good read." --Thomas Kelley, Consumer Reviewer 4 stars Last updated on 03 May 2021 "Part adventure story, part historical narrative, this book highlights the story of Marco Siffredi's attempt to be the first to snowboard the Hornbein Couloir on Mt. Everest after successfully snowboarding down Everest the year before. "This book is very thorough and includes a lot of history that goes beyond Siffredi's attempts and also delves deeply into his background growing up in Chamonix. It's an interesting psychological profile of the type of person who attempts things that most people wouldn't even contemplate, and the latter chapters of the book do try to unravel the mystery of what might have happened to Siffredi in 2002. "Those who have enjoyed other mountaineering books should definitely include this one on their "to be read" list, but the story itself isn't completely satisfying because the mystery of Siffredi's death is unsolved, and frankly, there's a fair amount of detail that feels more like filler than critical to the tale. I personally found the filler parts interesting in their own right because I am fascinated with Everest and the people who climb it, but those looking for more suspense and exhilaration may not feel the same. Photos showing the Couloir and perhaps a map of Siffredi's possible routes really would have been a plus." --Anita Pomerantz, Consumer Reviewer"Gripping. Scary. A fascinating glimpse into the world of extreme athletes who risk everything to follow their passion, live by their own rules, and die without regret. Marco lived a high-stakes adventure at extreme altitude that defies comprehension." --Diedre Wolownick, author of The Sharp End of Life and the mother of rock climber Alex Honnold from the Academy Award-winning film Free Solo"Marco was a beautiful human who lived life on the edge in Chamonix and in the Himalaya. He danced on that boundary of life and death every day. We will always miss him, but See You Tomorrow reveals another side of Marco we didn't know, the one of a kind, gentle and innocent soul who left us too soon." --Jeremy Jones, professional snowboarder"Marco was a purist, an athlete drawn to the bold and dangerous. Jeremy Evans humanizes Marco in a way that makes his disappearance a cautionary, yet inspiring, tale of someone who lived with purpose. But like most great stories with daring protagonists, we wished Marco's life could have ended differently." --Jimmy Chin, Emmy Award winning cinematographer and co-director of Academy Award-winning film Free Solo About the Author Jeremy Evans is a climber, snowboarder, award-winning journalist, and the author of The Battle for Paradise and In Search of Powder. Through his writing and adventures, he has connected with the most influential people in the climbing and skiing/snowboarding industries and encouraged them to tell their stories. This was most evident with subjects in the outdoor adventure field where Jeremy has been able to connect with climbers, skiers, and snowboarders worldwide.

Ninja Skills - by Antony Cummins (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 256Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: Martial Arts & Self-DefenseFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Watkins PublishingAge Range: AdultAuthor: Antony CumminsLanguage: English Book Synopsis This is the world's only illustrated guide to the real ninja teachings of historic Japan. These original techniques are presented in a highly accessible 'how-to' format that combines easy-to-follow text with a fresh, contemporary design that includes step-by-step photographs. This is the first book ever to present the authentic ninja techniques in a highly accessible, illustrated 'how to' format. The shadowy figure of the ninja - expert commando, secret agent, maverick who operates outside social norms - continues to exert fascination in the West, yet much of what is presented as ninja fact today is distorted or wrong. Drawing on the scrolls created by historical Japanese ninjas (or shinobi, as they were then known), this book offers the real ninja teachings in 150 easy-to-follow, illustrated lessons designed to draw contemporary students of ninja straight into the world of these skilled spy-commandos. The truth about the ninja is so much more complex and intriguing than the Hollywood clichés we know today. We may think, for example, of a ninja as being always garbed in black and fighting with 'throwing stars' but in fact, a ninja had clothes in different colours to serve as disguises for different times of day, and their arsenal of weaponry could include anything from poison, poison gas, pepper spray and fire-creating tools to swords, spears and knives (but no throwing stars). The 150 lessons in this book cover all the basics of ninja warcraft, including clever ideas for infiltrating an enemy compound (from wearing 'silent sandals' to faking passes and passwords), tactics for hiding and retreat (in the racoon dog retreat, a ninja will crouch low and halt, allowing the pursuer to collide with him at speed, whereupon the agent kills his enemy), and ways of crossing marshes and water (for example, with special shoes made of boards, or using a foldaway floating seat). The description is made all the more vivid by step-by-step photographs of the fighting techniques, diagrams outlining military tactics and beautiful samples of Japanese calligraphy. About the Author Antony Cummins is the founder of the Historical Ninjutsu Research Team, which has previously published The Book of Ninja and The Book of Samurai (Watkins). Antony also works as a consultant and co-presenter on high-end documentaries on Japan that are distributed by National Geographic, and is the Official Tourism Ambassador for Wakayama. He has been recognised by peers as a leading expert in the discovery of military arts of medieval Japan. www.natori.co.uk

On the Cains - by Brad Burns (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 232Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: FishingFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Stackpole BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Brad BurnsLanguage: English About the Book A historical look at and current guide to the Cains River in New Brunswick. There is almost a mystical aura surrounding the Cains and its Atlantic salmon and brook trout fishery. Only about a third of it was ever settled and then lightly, and by the middle of the twentieth century settlers had all given up and the river reverted to completely wild, which it still is today. The book also explores the Cains's relationship with the Miramichi River, in particular the Black Brook, the biggest and most productive pool on the river. In low water, a substantial portion of the Cains's fall run of fish stacks up there waiting for rain. Review Quotes Brad Burns has written a beautiful tribute to a magnificent river and its undaunted inhabitants. This is an instant classic that will be fawned over a century from now.--Monte Burke, author of Saban: The Making of a Coach and Sowbelly: The Obsessive Quest for the World Record BassBrad Burns is to be commended for his passion and enthusiasm for preserving the history of Atlantic salmon fishing on the Cains and Miramichi rivers. On the Cains brought me back to the days I spent at Wade's Fishing Lodge with my father, Herb Wade, and my grandfather Charlie Wade. These memories now will be kept alive for future generations thanks to Brad. The legacy left by Charlie and Herb Wade will not be forgotten.--David WadeThe Cains is the most important tributary on the most important Atlantic salmon river in Canada. It is a river that "gets under your skin" in a variety of ways that defy easy description. Brad Burns's On the Cains eloquently describes the spell that is cast by this river on the hearts and souls of anglers who fish there. It is a love affair with a river, the fish that live in it, and the people who reside there.--Topher Browne, Spey casting expert and author of Atlantic Salmon Magic About the Author Bradford Burns, a longtime fisheries activist, has served as a national board and executive committee member of the Coastal Conservation Association and is a founder and president of Stripers Forever, a coast-wide advocacy group for striped bass conservation. In a remarkable first book, Barry John has celebrated his life-long passion for the quest for speed by writing, illustrating and designing this fascinating history of record-breaking on land. Along with his informed and detailed text, his beautiful artwork shows all significant record-breakers in their immense variety, each illustrated in profile and accompanied by a cameo portrait of its driver. About the Author Like every boy in the 1950s, Barry John knew the names of Cobb and Campbell and possessed battered Dinky toys of their cars. When he was 15, he discovered Hot Rod magazine and, instantly mesmerised, bought it when pocket money stretched that far. Book Synopsis America's favorite sportswriter takes readers on a thrilling and unforgettable journey into the world of college basketball in this national bestseller. Like millions who love college basketball, John Feinstein was first drawn to the game because of its intensity, speed and intelligence. Like many others, he felt that the vast sums of money involved in NCAA basketball had turned the sport into a division of the NBA, rather than the beloved amateur sport it once was. He went in search of college basketball played with the passion and integrity it once inspired, and found the Patriot League. As one of the NCAA's smallest leagues, none of these teams leaves college early to join the NBA and none of these coaches gets national recognition or endorsement contracts. The young men on these teams are playing for the love of the sport, of competition and of their schools. John Feinstein spent a season with these players, uncovering the drama of their daily lives and the passions that drive them to commit hundreds of hours to basketball even when there is no chance of a professional future. He offers a look at American sport at its purest. One Move to Better Golf (Signet) - by Carl Lohren & Larry Dennis (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 124Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: GolfFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Echo Point Books & MediaAge Range: AdultAuthor: Carl Lohren & Larry DennisLanguage: English Book Synopsis In 1966, Carl Lohren made a breakthrough, and One Move to Better Golf explains it all. Highly regarded as an instructor and player in the New York Metropolitan PGA Section, Lohren formed his ideal golf swing after years of studying master golfer Ben Hogan. His eyes were opened at the 1964 Carling Open when he watched Hogan select an 8-iron and take a short swing on a 150 yard shot. To Lohren's surprise, Hogan's ball exploded off the clubface and wound up ten feet from the pin! This inspired Lohren to start his swing by turning his left shoulder as Hogan had. Immediately upon doing so, Carl's ball flight took on a different look: it had a piercing trajectory, with plenty of carry and roll. Carl continued to refine his method, so that in 1968, he won the NY State PGA Championship in a playoff over former Ryder Cup player Bill Collins. In One Move to Better Golf, Lohren explains a simple method of starting the golf swing with one move that incorporates the fundamentals. In doing so, he gives you a framework of confidence for your swing. He also provides students with a complete methodology of the physical and mental preparation necessary for effective shotmaking. Whether you are a low or high handicapper, One Move to Better Golf will give you a clear understanding of the total golf swing. Carl Lohren has become best known for his innovative methods of golf instruction over his 50-year career of professional competition and teaching. Lohren worked as a PGA club professional, improving upon his game and studying the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. After his mastery of the one move, Carl continued to excel as a tournament player, winning more professional tournaments, qualifying for the Champions Tour, in addition to competing in 11 major championships, 15 PGA Tour events, and numerous international tours. The League of Outsider Baseball - by Gary Cieradkowski (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 240Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: BaseballFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Atria BooksAge Range: AdultBook theme: HistoryAuthor: Gary CieradkowskiLanguage: English Book Synopsis From an award-winning graphic artist and baseball historian comes a strikingly original illustrated history of baseball's forgotten heroes, including stars of the Negro Leagues, barnstorming teams, semi-pro leagues, foreign leagues, and famous players like Shoeless Joe Jackson, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, and Joe DiMaggio before they achieved notoriety. From a young age, Gary Cieradkowski had a passion for baseball's unheralded heroes. Inspired by his father and their shared love of the sport, Cieradkowski began creating "outsider" baseball cards, as a way to tell the little-known stories of baseball's many unsung heroes--alongside some of baseball's greatest players before they were famous. The League of Outsider Baseball is a tribute to all of those who've played the game, known and unknown. Shining a light into the dark corners of baseball history--from Mickey Mantle's minor league days to Negro League greats like Josh Gibson and Leon Day; to people that most never knew played the game, such as Frank Sinatra, who had his own ball club in 1940s Hollywood; bank robber John Dillinger, who was a promising shortstop and took time out between robberies to attend Cubs games; and even a few US presidents--this book is a rich, visual tribute to America's pastime. Meticulously researched, beautifully illustrated using a unique, vintage baseball-card-style, and filled with a colorful and rich cast of characters, this book is a prized collector's item and will be cherished by fans of all ages. Review Quotes "The League of Outsider Baseball can be read as a reclamation project, although it is also more than that. The illustrations, rendered in vivid throwback style, recall the beautiful old tobacco cards that were manufactured at the turn of the century.' Based not on photographs but rather on research and imagination, they offer a new lens through which to look at, or think about, these players, a way of bringing them to life.--David L. Ulin, LA Times"Cieradkowski might be baseball's Van Gogh."-- "MLB.com""What began as a formof therapy has become this season's most beguiling and idiosyncratic book."-- "Chicago Tribune""Every few years, a baseball book comes along that isn't quite like anything before it. The latest candidate for the oddball baseball hall of fame book is The League of Outsider Baseball, a hugely enjoyable volume filled with so many jaw-dropping facts that you will want to start reading from cover to cover."--Allen Barra, Dallas Morning News"Cieradkowski's work leaps into my top 5 nonfiction baseball books."--Lawrence Toppman, Charlotte Observer"Cieradkowski's artwork is able to capture the player far better than the photos you find in a typical baseball card. These players are more alive, more real than any faded photo. I almost expect them to leap off the card and demand $50 in exchange for an autograph."--Jim Caple, ESPN"Gary Cieradkowski is to me the most interesting artist working in baseball today. His bold graphic style recalls America's poster kings of yore--Edward Penfield, J.C. Leyendecker, Fred G. Cooper--and his love of the game breathes new life into heroes long gone."--John Thorn, Official Historian for Major League Baseball"Gary Cieradkowski's colorful and nuanced baseball art and cards are a romantic and captivating journey into the game's glorious past delivered from a unique and detailed perspective."--Charlie Vascellaro, Author of Hank Aaron: A Biography

Belichick and Brady - by Michael Holley (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 432Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: FootballFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Hachette BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Michael HolleyLanguage: English About the Book "Originally published in hardcover and ebook by Hachette Books in October in 2016."--Title page verso. Book Synopsis New York Times bestselling sportswriter Michael Holley takes readers behind the scenes of the relationship that transformed the Patriots from a middling franchise to the envy of the NFL. No head coach-quarterback pair has been more successful in NFL history than Bill Belichick and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots. They have won four Super Bowls, six AFC championships, and thirteen division titles. And now Holley takes us inside their relationship, dissecting how these men and their team came to dominate football. Belichick, a genius as a defensive coordinator, had been a five-year flop as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Upon his controversial arrival in Foxboro, though, he quickly began to remake the team at every level--scouts, coaches, and players. His bold, calculated approach had fans up in arms, sportswriters questioning his intelligence, and players wondering how long they would last on the team. Meanwhile, buried down in the 2000 NFL draft, the 199th overall pick was a skinny kid from the University of Michigan named Tom Brady who many scouts thought would never succeed at a professional level. The lowest of the four quarterbacks on the team's depth chart, he appeard to be just one of the guys. Like Belichick, though, he lived for football, and he knew the playbook as well as Drew Bledsoe, the franchise quarterback. And when Bledsoe was injured in 2001, Brady took the job and vowed to never give it back. The handsome Brady became a star, wearing hand-tailored suits, appearing in movies and on magazine covers, and marrying a supermodel. Belichick, with his trademark cut-off hoodies, was the opposite of a fashion plate. Together, the odd couple somehow rose above controversies and tragedies. Draft picks were lost, suspensions given, lawsuits filed. As their legends have grown, so have their critics, with some of those critics operating from NFL headquarters. Despite that, with Belichick's deft and brilliant strategy in the draft year in year out and Brady's exacting decision-making on the field, the Patriots cultivated an atmosphere of success and won a stunning 75 percent of their games together. Respected and reviled, Belichick and Brady have set the bar high for excellence in a league designed for parity. They have rarely been understood. Until now. Based on dozens of interviews with former and current players, coaches, and executives, Belichick and Brady is an eye-opening look at the minds, motives, and wild ambitions of two men who have left an indelible mark on the game of football. Footprints on the Mountains - by Dennis Heath Renshaw (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 282Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: HikingFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Hillhelen Group LLCAge Range: AdultAuthor: Dennis Heath RenshawLanguage: English Book Synopsis Ten thousand hikers start the Appalachian Trail every year. Only ten percent finish. Whether you begin in Maine or Georgia, the trail is 2,186 miles long filled with steep climbs, deep valleys, rivers to ford, wildlife, majestic views, strangers who become friends, and swollen, blistered feet. I began this trek at age 66 and hiked 91 mountain peaks, went through 14 states, 464,464 elevation changes -- the equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest 25 times. Along the way, I acquired the trail name "Preacher," carried a 43-pound backpack, lost 25 pounds, got lost three times, and wore out seven pairs of boots. Many who start the trail are in a life turning point and seek spiritual guidance from the awesome wonder of the mountain peaks, sunsets, running rivers and sunrises that offer beauty and peace. Or they may seek a voice to share some solace, or an ear to listen. As I was called "Preacher," some came seeking counsel. I started the journey as a challenge to myself, but I found much more when I experienced God's footprints already on the mountains. I'm sharing my experiences to help others who choose to begin the journey. I hope my descriptions of the Trail, the people and equipment that worked for me, guide someone to travel these mountain trails and find answers. Review Quotes "Dennis (Dr. Renshaw), has combined a helpful commentary of hiking the AT with powerful insights that will help anyone who reads this book understand the lure of the Appalachian Trail. I was saddened to reach the end, as I was so enjoying his stories and descriptions of the trail. I felt as if I was going to summit Katahdin with him." Dr. Don Thrasher, Pastor "We are preparing to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2020. We found this account extremely insightful on how the trail affects you both physically and mentally. What makes this book so special though, is the spiritual journey on which the writer takes you."Sarah and Jonathan Baker, Future Appalachian Trail Hikers

Instead of sending his players into a losing battle against emotion, indecision, and fear on the golf course, he shows them how to organize their thoughts and use them for maximum performance. His step-by-step Pre-Shot Pyramid provides any player with the ideal blueprint for shot setup. And his revolutionary Mental Scorecard will give you the tools to accurately measure what you really do on the golf course and how to make real, permanent improvements. Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer - by Warren St John (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 275Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: FootballFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Broadway BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Warren St JohnLanguage: English About the Book Having purchased his very own RV and immersed himself in the life and crazy culture of Alabama Crimson Tide fans during the 1999 season, St. John pens a book about much more than football--it is an enduring memoir about sport and culture in the U.S. High school & older. Book Synopsis What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goal posts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care? In search of answers, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game. A movable feast of Weber grills and Igloo coolers, these are hard-core football fans who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday's game: The Reeses, who skipped their own daughter's wedding because it coincided with a Bama game; Ray Pradat, the Episcopal minister who watches the games on a television beside his altar while performing weddings; and John Ed, the wheeling and dealing ticket scalper whose access to good seats gives him power on par with the governor. In no time at all, St. John buys an RV (a $5,500 beater named The Hawg) and joins the caravan for a full football season, chronicling the world of the extreme fan and learning that in the shadow of the stadium, it can all begin to seem strangely normal. Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is not only a hilarious travel story, but a cultural anthropology of fans that goes a long way toward demystifying the universal urge to take sides and to win. Review Quotes "An ode to fandom." --Newsweek "St. John brings a singular empathy for his subjects. . . . These oversized personalities are rendered with irresistible zeal and light up the book like a stadium scoreboard." --New York Times "An unreconstructed fan of Alabama football, exiled in New York, Warren St. John goes home to join the Crimson Tide's most rabid supporters as they roll across the South. His four-mile-a-gallon odyssey through the sun, suds, and stink of tailgate culture is a fresh and funny take on the American road trip--and an affectionate yet unsentimental look at Southern life, from belles who chug beer and bray from the stands, to fundamentalists who forgive any sin except a losing season. Like his hero, Bear Bryant, St. John has crafted a winner." --Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic"What does it really mean to be a sports fan? For the millions of us who are, Warren St. John captures our passion with hilarity, absurdity and poignancy. He just gets our religion. And Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is a marvelous journey into the soul of sports in America. A great ride in the tradition of Hunter Thompson and an even better read." --H.G. "Buzz" Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights "A remarkable and funny book about obsession in America by a really fine writer." -- Gay Talese "Sports fandom is a phenomenon that has so far baffled the field of psychology. The professionals haven't a clue. They should read this book. Warren St. John takes us to where the rubber meets the road." -- Tom Wolfe About the Author Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Warren St. John is a reporter for the New York Times and has written for The New Yorker, the New York Observer, and Wired. He lives in New York.

Featuring a foreword from head coach Andy Reid, and exclusive behind-the-scenes images from the Chiefs' team photographers, this is a vivid, one-of-a-kind chronicle of the Chiefs' march to their second world championship. In 2019, the NFL's one hundredth season, the Chiefs once again scaled pro football's summit, persevering through a season marked by adversity and resilience. Experience the historic journey as it has never been seen before: from the inside, through rare, on- and off-the-field photography, key never-before-seen artifacts spanning the entire campaign, and Andy Reid's personal account of winning his first Super Bowl ring as a head coach. Casting Into the Light - by Janet Messineo (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 320Genre: Sports + RecreationSub-Genre: FishingFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Pantheon BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Janet MessineoLanguage: English Book Synopsis Tales of a champion surfcaster: the education of a young woman hell-bent on following her dream and learning the mysterious and profound sport, and art, of surfcasting, on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Janet Messineo knew from the get-go that she wanted to become a great fisherman. She knew she was as capable as any man of catching and landing a huge fish. It took years--and many terrifying nights alone on the beach in complete darkness, in search of a huge creature to pull out of the sea--for her to prove to herself and to the male-dominated fishing community that she could make her dream real. Messineo writes of the object of her obsession: striped bass and how it can take a lifetime to become a proficient striped bass fisherman; of stripers as nocturnal feeders, hard-fighting, clever fish that under the cover of darkness trap bait against jetties or between fields of large boulders near shorelines, or, once hooked, rub their mouths against the rocks to cut the line. She writes of growing up in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Salem, New Hampshire, the granddaughter of textile mill workers, tagging along with her father and brother as they cast off of jetties; of going to art school, feeling from a young age the need to escape, and finding herself, one summer, on the Vineyard. She describes the series of jobs that supported her fishing--waitressing at the Black Dog, Helios, and the Home Port, among other restaurants. She writes of her education in patience and the technique to land a fish; learning the equipment--hooks, sinkers, her first squid jig; buying her first one-ounce Rebel lure. She re-creates the thrill of fishing at night, of being buffeted by the island's harsh winds and torrential rains; the terror of hooking something mysterious in the darkness that might pull her into water over her head. She gives us a rich portrait of island life and writes of its history and of Chappaquiddick's (it belonged to the Wampanoags, who originally called it Cheppiaquidne--"separate island"); of the Martha's Vineyard Derby: its beginning in 1946 as a way to bring tourism to the island during the offseason, and the Derby's growing into one of the largest tournaments in the world. Messineo describes her dream of becoming a marine taxidermist, of learning the craft and perfecting the art of it. She writes of the men she's fished with and the women who forged the path for others (among them, Lorraine "Tootie" Johnson, who fished Vineyard waters for more than sixty years, and Lori VanDerlaske, who won the Derby shore division in 1995). And she writes of her life commingled with fishing--her marriage to a singer, poet, activist; their adopting a son with Asperger's; and her teaching him to fish. She writes of the transformative power of fishing that helped her to shake off drugs and alcohol, and of her profound respect for fish as a magnificent animal. With eighteen of the author's favorite fish recipes, Casting into the Light is a book about following one's dreams and about the quiet reckoning with self in the long hours of darkness at the water's edge, with the sounds of the ocean, the night air, and the jet-black sky. Review Quotes One of the chief pleasures of Casting Into the Light is its evocation of a collegial fishing community . . . warm-hearted . . . Messineo is an amiable and entertaining storyteller who--much to her own surprise--has found a sort of bliss.--Richard Adams Carey, The Wall Street JournalA bright thread in the narrative is the sense of a social fabric binding the island at large and fishermen of every gender . . . lucid prose . . . sentences as natural as waves.--Philip Kopper, Washington Times"Eloquent . . . a remarkable book by a remarkable Vineyard bass fisherman . . . Janet Messineo's story is gripping; bright, funny, and illuminating. It has everything . . . more than a fish story, it's the story of a very remarkable human being, a person who refused to be shoehorned into a category society felt comfortable with and set out instead to create something truly unique--herself."--Rob Conery, Cape Cod Times "Tells it like it is . . . real . . . authentic . . . [Messineo is] a natural storyteller . . . She effortlessly conveys the tangible and intangible elements of surfcasting. Her descriptions of the relentless hope that renews with every cast and drives hard-core fishermen to stay out long after it's stopped being fun are recognizable to anyone who has fished and enlightening to anyone who has not . . . Vulnerability is rarely on display in the male-dominated surfcasting community. How fitting that after having to prove she belongs despite being a woman, it's perhaps because she is a woman that she was able to write a memoir that deserves a spot among the best books ever written about surfcasting."--Kevin Blinkoff, On the Water Magazine "Uniquely excellent . . . Sure, it's about fishing, but that's just one element in a memoir about [Messineo's] life inside and outside fishing . . . It's also a book about overcoming fear. In the early days, Messineo fished alone, often at night, standing in roiling surf in waterlogged waders, all she could afford then. She knew the dangers of the sea and the lives lost to wind and water on the Island. She conveys that feeling of experiencing the power of nature . . . Her book is full of fishing yarns, stories, quirks and superstitions, her own and others' . . . You can hear her voice on the page. If you don't know her, you'll want to . . . This is a great read if you fish, and an equally important book if you don't."--Jack Shea, Martha's Vineyard Times Terrific . . . affecting . . . categorizing this as a fishing book would be doing it a disservice. At its heart, this is a book about renewal.
