Salt - (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 208Genre: PhotographySub-Genre: Subjects & ThemesFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Rizzoli International PublicationsAge Range: AdultBook theme: Plants & AnimalsLanguage: English Book Synopsis INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards -- 2014 Finalist Experience the world's greatest coastal fly-fishing destinations with this stunning volume, an ideal gift for any angler's library. As close to a first-hand experience as a reader can get without getting wet, Salt: Coastal and Flats Fishing is a visually stunning journey to America's most epic saltwater fishing hot spots. Featuring photography from the Atlantic Northeast, Pacific Northwest, Bahamas, Gulf Coast, and Florida Keys-and highlighting fish such as striped bass, tuna, bonefish, permit, and tarpon-this is a life's compilation of saltwater fly-fishing photography by one of the most acclaimed outdoors photographers. Each section has an accompanying essay by Tom Rosenbauer that takes the reader along on a memorable trip to the world's greatest fishing destinations. For the serious fly fisherman, it is an album of shared experiences. For those new to the sport, it is an artfully crafted guidebook to the exotic world that exists on the waters of American coastlines and islands. Review Quotes 2014 National Outdoor Book Award Winner How best to describe this book? Dazzling. Simply dazzling. Andy Anderson, the photographer of Salt, is a consummate artist. His dramatic photography combined with an equally dazzling design has created a book that is utterly exhilarating in its depiction of the sport of coastal fishing. Anderson comes at the subject from all angles, from close-up to afar, from eye-level to point-of-view, and from under water to its misty surface. His palettes range from brilliant color to sepia tones to stark black and white. It is a masterful merging of design and photography, a true work of art. The final touch to this outstanding volume are a series of engaging essays by noted fishing author Tom Rosenbauer. --National Outdoor Book Awards Foundation A visually stunning voyage to America's most amazing saltwater fishing destinations. The book includes essays that bring readers on memorable trips to some of the world's greatest fishing locations.--Covey Rise MagazinePhotographer Andy Anderson brings a strong vision of coastal angling to Salt, a riveting large-format album of museum-quality images. Anderson's work reaches deep into the mesmerizing experience of fishing at the edge of the sea with a take on angling dominated by the broad sweep of marine horizons, the otherworldly beauty of ocean-honed fish species, and the meditative concentration of saltwater anglers. His anglers are dwarfed by their task, diminutive against the indifference of coastal geology, absurdly hopeful in their casts, gnomic guides at their sides pointing the way. The vigorous poignancy of saltwater angling comes through on every page. -Gray's Sporting Journal "This is one of those books that has you in awe just handling it. Big, heavy, high quality printing on heavy stock paper. Large full spread photos and delicate and discrete text layout. A real coffee table book in the classical sense. It will impress and fascinate anyone who picks it up--even the non-angler." -Global Fly Fisher Recommended for the fisherman who is wearied by this brutal winter...I've never come across a fishing book like this One that concentrates on inshore fishing, from places like Montauk to places like the Bahamas. Anderson's photos within are amazing, especially the cover shot, which will take your breath away. Rosenbauer's prose nicely fills the space between the shots. What I found particularly cool about this book was the photos and descriptions of various haunts in the northeastern salt, a geographical area that's been under-represented in past books about fishing. Forbes Magazine Seasoned editorial and advertising photographer Andy Anderson's new book Salt explores America's most amazing saltwater fishing spots. Each section has an accompanying essay by Tom Rosenbauer... Photo District News Andy Anderson has written an autobiography in pictures, a life on the water. Salt is an eloquent modern paean to the strength and beauty of the coastal waters he cares for at a time when that environment is in danger of disappearing. Guy de la Valdène "Our Picks Selection: Lean into the sea breeze, taste the brine, feel the tug of the tide: This handsome collection of 180 large-size, full-color images--takes you on a guided tour of America's top fishing hot spots. You may not actually be the one wading into the surf, casting the line and hauling in the striped bass, tuna, and tarpon in New England, the Pacific Northwest, the Bahamas, the Gulf Coast and the Florida Keys, but as you lose yourself in this vividly illustrated ode to the sheer joy of fishing, you might easily forget you're not really there." -American Profile Magazine "Most coffee table books on fishing revolve around a specific place or a certain species. Salt has more of a broad topic and is absolutely stunning. Anderson is one of my favorite photographers in the commercial space right now and pretty much kills it with everything that he does. Rosenbauer is the godfather of all things fly fishing, having been at the Orvis Company for more than 30 years and authored a number of books on the subject. Salt is a big book with large, expansive images that you can easily get lost in. The chapters are broken up into categories like wading, boats, fish, flies, guides, etc. Rosenbauer does an expert job of transporting you to his favorite flat or stories of his crazy friend's boat called the 'Weapon.' If you're in the market for a good read with expertly crafted images on salt water fishing or need a present for that angler in your life, I highly recommend this book." -Field & Stream, Fly Talk "If you have ever watched a fisherman cast a line or have done it yourself, you will find this an amazing book. The photography is stunning as the author and photographer explore the North American coastal edges as they explore America's most exciting saltwater hot spots. For those of us not familiar with the intricacies of the sport of fishing, this is a refreshingly straight forward fountain of information. Rosenbauer's sections such as Wading, Boats, Fish, and Flies not only was enlightening but it was done thru sharing wonderful stories and experiences. The photography of Andy Anderson is simply unbelievable. He captures movement in water, fishermen and fish in almost poetic fashion. If you are a fisherman or know one, this book will be a fantastic addition to their library." Apogee Photo Magazine "Salt a new coffee table book exclusively about saltwater fishing, captures the beauty of these places. The photos are gorgeous...this is a lush book dense on beauty and light on words. Published by Rizzoli, who specializes in high-end coffee table books like this, the book is the nicest I've seen on the subject. The book is driven by photos by Andy Anderson, whose work is incredible. Some of the photos in the book...are remarkable as much for their quality as for how they were taken...these shots transport you." New England On The Fly "Readers will experience the world's greatest coastal fly-fishing destinations with this stunning volume, an ideal gift for any coast-lover's library." -Key West Magazine "Andy Anderson was the first photographer that I couldn't afford. He got so good, so fast, that he was getting assignments from Ram Trucks and Trump Hotel. But Salt shows why his stock soared: when he did shoot flyfishing, there was nobody better. His close-ups are superb, but it's Anderson's many shots of anglers from a distance--wading the flats or the surf, or sitting in a skiff--that I like best, several of which are in the book. (Including The Drake 2002 cover.) Tom Rosenbauer adds a level of writing to match the photos, and the result is one of those rare coffee table books that you'll actually want on your table." Tom Bie, Publisher of The Drake If you want to understand the passion for fishing on the edge of the ocean, or if you already have that passion but want to know why you feel it so intensely, then Salt is the book for you. Tom McGuane "Andy Anderson can swap fish tales with the best of them...Salt a gorgeous chronicle of waterborne adventure. Anderson captures fishermen as only a member of the tribe could, attuned to their dramas and joys. Whether bellying up to a bonefish in the Florida Keys, watching a bluefin boat emerge from a cloud of spray off the Atlantic coast, or capturing a wall of roaring surf looking over a North Carolina beach, Anderson is not afraid to put himself in the heart of the action--which helps explain why he has lost about a dozen high-end cameras to the elements over the years. As any angler can tell you, sometimes you get the best results by stepping outside the mainstream." Garden and Gun "Fishing, like photography, is a solitary pursuit, one that requires vast reserves of patience, a sensitivity to subtle movements, and lightning quick reflexes. Capturing the sport's hard-won pleasures on film requires still another helping of each, which is why Andy Anderson, a T & C contributor and lifelong fisherman himself, was able to produce such a magnificent book on the subject. Salt distills the work of 20 years...the pictures owe something to J.M.W. Turner." Town & Country"I am an old-time fishing guide, outdoor action photographer (with numerous cover shots for the major outdoor magazines), and a lifelong saltwater angler. I only tell you this so you can understand my perspective and appreciation for Andy Anderson's amazing photography in this fantastic book. My experienced eye thinks his work is awesome, and I am sure you will treasure it. It is a great addition to any angler's library." Stu Apte "The photos, by Andy Anderson, are vibrant in color and often full or double page. They capture the serenity of a calm day, the stunning flavor of a sunrise and the turmoil of a churning ocean. Pictures of hooked tarpon, leaping and exploding from the foam, will place you right in the middle of the action. You can easily imagine yourself floating over the waters surface, eyes scanning the horizon for signs of fish. Many of the photographs are so clear and colorful that I almost want to tear them from the book and frame them. Tom Rosenbauer's narrative in each chapter will transport you into the world of fly fishing and Andy's photos will drop you into the action." Snug Harbor Bay "A new book that should fit perfectly at the center of every saltwater-loving angler's coffee table is SALT: Coastal Flats Fishing. SALT is an extraordinary accomplishment, featuring dozens of photographs from Andy Anderson accompanied by essays by esteemed saltwater aficionado, Tom Rosenbauer. The photographs and written content take on a range of saltwater destinations and scenery...both United States' coasts are well captured. In addition, the authors well-document the Southeast of the U.S. as well as the Pacific Northwest...This is not a photo book of grip and grin images. Instead, this book captures many dimensions of the sport with images that are not only symbolic of the many characteristics of saltwater angling, but also pictures that any angler can imagine themselves a part of. In all, this offering is a welcomed contribution for all anglers." -The Venturing Angler About the Author Andy Anderson is an award-winning outdoor photographer who has shot for Outside, Garden & Gun, and Conde Nast Traveler, among other publications. Tom Rosenbauer is a lifelong fly fisher and author of more than twelve books on fly fishing, including Universe's The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing. Guy de la Valdène is the author of several books, numerous articles for Gray's Sporting Journal, Sports Afield, and Field & Stream, and director of the highly acclaimed documentary Tarpon.

La Casa Azul, now one of the most visited museums in Mexico City, was the artist's birthplace and the home where she grew up, lived with her husband Diego Rivera for a number of years, and also where she died. She spent long periods of time in the house convalescing, first in 1918 when she contracted polio and again, at the age of 18, after the trolley accident which left her badly injured. Confined to her bed and in constant pain and discomfort, she began to paint as a way to occupy her time. After marrying Rivera, Frida moved out of the Blue House, living in Mexico and abroad, moving for a brief time to the United States, until eventually returning to her childhood home. Fully illustrated, the book features Frida's paintings together with archive images and family photographs, objects and artefacts she collected, and photographs of the surrounding landscape to provide an insight into how these places shaped this much-loved artist and how the homes and landscapes of her life relate to her work. The picturesque island has been populated with native Indians, European settlers, pirates and other various scallywags, pineapple farmers and an endless stream of sailors from far-flung ports of call. Each faction brought with it to the island a unique past and culture, and no where can this variety of influences be more readily observed than in Key West's historic architecture. The intriguing history of Key West can be deciphered through the architecture of its buildings--each facade and portico offers another subtle detail in the island-city's larger story. Preserving Paradise, by author and executive director of the Historic Florida Keys Foundation George Born, reveals the nuances of Key West's architecture and uses it to illuminate many aspects of Conch Republic history. With a warm, readable style, Born explores a range of topics, including Key West's prevalent architectural styles, the preservation of historic structures, the history of building materials, and the effect of hurricanes on the city's architectural heritage. Committed to preserving Key West's architecture and the past it represents, Born explains in detail just why Key West is so architecturally unique, and why the city's buildings, streets and neighborhoods are a repository of history that can be discovered by experts and weekend visitors alike."

Book Synopsis It seems that almost everyone likes treehouses. Smiles of recognition turn into grins of enthusiasm as more people discover them and dream about making their own private retreats or family play spaces. And it's nice to remind ourselves that treehouses are built into the oldest and most forgiving, living things on earth. Also, history records treehouses as being built as deliberate follies, as challenges for arboreal designers, for merrymaking, and for keeping the spirit of fairy tales alive. But treehouses can also be social places. We will visit many that were built to entertain, to hang out with friends, or as guest houses. Trees come in all types.Master treehouse builders Peter and Judy Nelson, with David Larkin, have embarked on yet another treehouse-discovery expedition across America, this time adding the investigation of backyard playhouses to their agenda. Now, in The Treehouse Book, they reveal their findings, illustrated and described in the most complete volume yet. The Human Figure (Dover Anatomy for Artists) - by John H Vanderpoel (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 144Genre: ArtSub-Genre: TechniquesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Echo Point Books & MediaAge Range: AdultBook theme: Life DrawingAuthor: John H VanderpoelLanguage: English Book Synopsis This classic study of human anatomy for artists remains unrivaled in its meticulously detailed presentation of each fundamental feature of the human figure. Legendary art instructor John H. Vanderpoel compiled this volume toward the end of his tenure at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1907. Ever since, it has been read like a bible by thousands of figure drawing students around the world. The Human Figure is notable for its careful examination of the thousands of features that, together, compose the human body. Every detail is discussed-the gentle overhang of the upper lip; the slight puckering at the corners of the mouth; how the spine appears 'depressed' when juxtaposed with the muscular fullness of the shoulders on either side-and 430 of the author's own charcoal and pencil drawings bring them to life. In addition to cataloging bodily features and their interactions, this book calls your attention to innumerable subtle points of shading, lighting, curvature, proportion, foreshortening, muscular tension, etc. around the body. Vanderpoel also accounts for an array of physical variations across age groups, sexes, and body types, providing examples of each throughout. A time-honored approach to artistically rendering the human figure, this book is a complete course in truly understanding the structure of the human figure.

Demonstrations of figure drawing include the use of such simple forms as the cube, cylinder, and sphere. 96 black-and-white figures. Book Synopsis Artists of classical Greece and the Renaissance were highly aware of the complexity and great beauty of the human figure, and strove in their artwork to depict the ideal form. This book by an experienced twentieth-century art teacher covers two fundamentals of figure drawing that were equally important to masters of earlier eras -- anatomy and perspective, subjects that seldom receive a thorough treatment within the same book. Carefully addressing both topics, the text suggests ways to convey the structure and functions of the human figure, covers elementary principles of drawing, and considers the use of light and shadow. Also discussed are aspects of measurement and the application of such simple forms as the cube, cylinder, and sphere in representing parts of the human body.In describing the relationship between anatomical features and surface form, the chapters on anatomy include drawings of the bones and muscles of the trunk, upper and lower limbs, and the head and its prominent aspects. A final section focuses on accessories, such as eyeglasses and clothing -- items which, when worn, virtually become part of the figure's anatomy.Clearly and concisely written, Anatomy and Perspective will be an important addition to the personal library of anyone interested in drawing the human figure. A Little Feminist History of Art - by Charlotte Mullins (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 128Genre: ArtSub-Genre: HistoryFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Tate PublishingAge Range: AdultBook theme: Contemporary (1945-)Author: Charlotte MullinsLanguage: English Book Synopsis A short and pithy introduction to the most important feminist artworks from the late 1960s to the present Emerging in the late 1960s as women artists struggled to "de-gender" their work to compete in a male-dominated arena, the feminist art movement has played a leading role in the art world over the last five decades. Using the "female gaze" to articulate socially relevant issues after an era of aesthetic "formalism," feminist artists, working in a variety of media, have brought attention to ideas surrounding gender, identity, and form. They have critiqued and altered our thinking about the cultural expectations and stereotyping of women, women's struggle for equality, and the treatment of the female body as a commodity. Fifty outstanding works reflect women's lives and experience, the changing position of women artists, and the impact of feminist ideals and politics on visual culture. This book is a celebration of one of the most ambitious, influential, and enduring artistic movements to emerge from the 20th century. About the Author Charlotte Mullins is an art critic, writer and broadcaster. She was arts editor of The Independent on Sunday, and the editor of Art Review, V & A Magazine, and Art Quarterly. She has also written over 10 books, including two art books for children published under the pen name Charlie Ayres.

Book Synopsis One of literature's most beloved authors is beautifully documented in this illustrated biography of Virginia Woolf. Featuring handwritten text paired with beguiling illustrations and a tactile cover with foil-stamped and debossed details, this giftable package reveals the formative events of Woolf's life: how she was supported--and challenged--in her craft, her struggles with mental illness, and how her great works came to be. With lines pulled from Woolf's own letters featured alongside interesting details, such as her nickname for her husband and how slowly her first novel sold, this intimate guide makes a thoughtful gift for literature lovers and book clubbers. Review Quotes Follows Virginia Woolf's life from a childhood marked by love and loss to her dogged rise as one of humanity's most significant writers. Intersecting her life are larger threads - the women's suffrage movement, the artists and intellectuals of the Bloomsbury group, the world wars. Nina Cosford's charming illustrations contain echoes of the Provensens and Maira Kalman, yet stand as thoroughly original. Spliced into the story are Woolf's own beguiling lines. -- New York TimesWriter Zena Alkayat and artist Nina Cosford explore Woolf's remarkable life with equal parts concision, compassion, and unsentimental reverence. -- Brain Pickings About the Author Zena Alkayat is a journalist, author, and editor based in London. Model Making - (Architecture Briefs) by Megan Werner (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 159Genre: ArchitectureSub-Genre: Methods & MaterialsSeries Title: Architecture BriefsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Princeton Architectural PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Megan WernerLanguage: English Book Synopsis The ancient craft of architectural model making may seem unnecessary in today's age of digital renderings and virtual tours, but physical models remain a uniquely revealing and compelling tool for the architect. More forcefully than any other way of visualizing a building, models represent ideas, as opposed to images. The sensory impact of a physical model, its materiality, is an important step in the design process. Once an idea is materialized, it exists in the real world, and the real world reacts--with limitations or opportunities, which become clear through the process of making. Amodel not only allows the designer to explore freely while testing out specific ideas but also to advance and communicate his or her ideas effectively to others.

Boston's Apollo - by Nathaniel Silver (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 256Genre: ArtSub-Genre: Individual ArtistsFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Isabella Stewart Gardner MuseumAge Range: AdultBook theme: MonographsAuthor: Nathaniel SilverLanguage: English About the Book "In 1916, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) met Thomas Eugene McKeller (1890-1962), a young Black elevator attendant, at Boston's Hotel Vendome. McKeller posed for most of the figures--both male and female--in Sargent's murals in the Museum of Fine Arts. The painter transformed McKeller into white gods and goddesses, creating soaring allegories of the liberal arts that celebrated the recent expansion of the city's premier civic museum. Sargent then gave the preparatory drawings of McKeller to Isabella Stewart Gardner, ensuring their preservation in perpetuity. Displayed together for the first time, the drawings provide a window into the metamorphoses of race, gender, and identity, and attest to a relationship between two men, artist and model, at a time of intense social upheaval. This exhibition brings together Sargent's drawings and related historical materials to tell the story of McKeller's life. His central importance in Sargent's major artistic commissions in the Boston area considers critical questions of race, class, and sexuality--as relevant today as they were in Gilded Age Boston" Book Synopsis The story of the extraordinary collaboration behind one of John Singer Sargent's renowned late masterpieces In 1916, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) met Thomas Eugene McKeller (1890-1962), a young African American elevator attendant, at Boston's Hotel Vendome. McKeller became the principal model for Sargent's murals in the new wing of the city's Museum of Fine Arts, among the painter's most ambitious works. Sargent's nude studies and sketches from this project attest to a close collaboration between the two men that unfolded over nearly ten years. Featuring drawings given by Sargent to Isabella Stewart Gardner and published in full for the first time, a portrait of McKeller, and archival materials reconstructing his life and relationship with Sargent, this book opens new avenues into artist-model relationships and transforms our understanding of Sargent's iconic American paintings. Essays offer the first biography of McKeller and a window onto African American life in early-20th-century Boston. They also address the artist's sexuality, his models, and questions of race and identity. Review Quotes "an excellent book."--Holland Cotter, New York Times About the Author Nathaniel Silver is William and Lia Poorvu Curator of the Collection at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

Champagne Supernovas - by Maureen Callahan (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 288Genre: ArtSub-Genre: Fashion & AccessoriesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Touchstone BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Maureen CallahanLanguage: English Book Synopsis "Terrifically exciting and fun" (Publishers Weekly), Champagne Supernovas is "a lucid, smoothly executed look at a pivotal decade in the legacy of American fashion" (Kirkus Reviews) as told through the lives of Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen--the three iconic personalities who defined the time. Veteran pop culture journalist Maureen Callahan takes us back to the pivotal style moment of the early 1990s--when supermodel glamazons gave way to heroin chic, when the alternative became the mainstream, and when fashion suddenly became the cradle for the most exciting artistic and cultural innovations of the age. Champagne Supernovas gives you the inside scoop from a bevy of supermodels, stylists, editors, photographers, confidantes, club kids, and scenesters who were there. They'll tell the unvarnished story of three of the most influential personalities to emerge in fashion in decades--Kate, Marc, and McQueen--and show why the conditions in the 1990s were perfect for their rise...but also helped contribute to their personal struggles. Steeped in the creative brew of art, decadence, and genius that defined the era, Champagne Supernovas is a "titillating ride through the fashion world" (Elle) that offers readers front-row tickets to a gloriously debauched soap opera about the losers and freaks who became the industry's It Girls and Boys...and who changed the larger culture forever. Review Quotes Champagne Supernovas puts readers in the front row and three of the era's biggest names in the catwalk spotlight. . . . The pace is as quick as an H & M runway knockoff. Callahan's prose is tight, and she stitches together momentum and suspense by alternating chapters on the trio. . . . A page turner filled with juicy behind-the-scenes tales.-- "Associated Press""A juicy and gossipy account of the '90s fashion scene. . . . You might not fully approve . . . but you can't help wishing you were there."-- "Daily Beast""A titillating ride through the '90s fashion world, as Kate Moss, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen eclipsed the reigning glamazons with their waifish chic."-- "Elle""Fast paced, gossipy and cleverly put together . . . fantastically entertaining and thoroughly researched . . . this is a book about how myths are made."-- "Telegraph (UK)""Terrifically exciting and fun...this book works as a fun, if cautionary, read about some of the folks who changed fashion in the 1990s. Readers will wonder when a similar trio will arrive to save us all from the Kardashians."-- "Publishers Weekly""The author makes great use of personal interviews and reference materials, and through cross comparisons, she discovers like-minded commonalities they all shared with each other...A lucid, smoothly executed look at a pivotal decade in the legacy of American fashion."-- "Kirkus Reviews"Maureen Callahan proves, in a biography as dramatic and addictive as Game of Thrones, that the decade represents a revolution not just in fashion, but also the broader ideals of beauty. . . . A former editor and writer at New York magazine, Spin and the New York Post, Callahan crafts an intoxicating brew of scholarly rigor, dishy anecdotes and wicked commentary.-- "Chicago Tribune"Shocking but never cheap, sometimes hilarious but more often heartbreaking, Champagne Supernovas is a thorough, intimate, and bracing look at the complicated and deeply troubled figures who sparked a fashion revolution.--Alan Light, former editor-in-chief, Vibe and Spin magazines"As someone whose knowledge of fashion runs fairly pedestrian, I was surprised to find myself unable to put down Maureen Callahan's propulsive Champagne Supernovas. With a scholar's eye and a tabloid reporter's touch, Callahan bursts open one of the most exclusive industries in the world, revealing to the grit and glamour, the damaged, drug-addled underdogs, and the tortured geniuses who forever changed the way we comprehend and commodify beauty. This instant classic -- a master class in how to write smart, intimate, at times shocking, but always compulsively readable non-fiction -- deserves its place as the 90s answer to other pop culture giants, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls and Fifth Avenue, 5AM.--Susannah Cahalan, author of Brain on Fire"Maureen Callahan has pulled off a very neat trick in Champagne Supernovas, capturing the essence of a fleeting moment when fashion's guard changed. This rise-and-fall story has it all: sex, drugs, rock, and frocks. Fasten your seat belt. It's a scary fun ride."--Michael Gross, author of Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women and House of Outrageous Fortune"The 90s: a time when fashion suddenly mingled with punk rock, movie stars, art school, the fantasies of the whole world, in ways both deadly and revolutionary. Callahan brilliantly connects all the glittering wreckage from a uniquely explosive moment in pop culture, from London to Seattle to the Viper Room. A major work on a one-of-a-kind pop era."--Rob Sheffield, author of Love Is A Mix Tape and Turn Around Bright Eyes About the Author Maureen Callahan has worked as an editor and writer at the New York Post, covering everything from the subcultures of the Lower East Side to local and national politics. Book Synopsis "This is a first-class resource for students who wish to improve their drawing skills. A must for those who want to advance their visual communication" Simon Pattison, York St John University "...another brilliant teaching and learning recourse by LKP" Nooshin Akrami, University of Bolton "Extremely approachable - the illustrations are not too polished and should be achievable for most students. Excellent contemporary objects/interiors/architecture used as drawn examples all clearly labelled so that students can research them further. The book is extremely well organized and laid out with clear sections, labels, and discrete tasks" Tom Nelson, Coventry School of Art and Design Stephanie Travis' new book teaches architecture and interior design students all they need to know about sketching. With the advancement of technology, the debate surrounding hand drawing versus computer-generated imagery has become a hot topic. Having grown up with computers, today's interior design and architecture students are extremely adept at creating computer imagery, but often lack confidence in their freehand sketching skills, or do not know how to sketch at all. Sketching, and the careful observation that it entails, is essential for the successful development of the next generation of designers whether they practice architecture, interior or product design. Forty-five step-by-step exercises take the student from the simple three-dimensional forms of furniture, to interiors, to complex building exteriors, and cityscapes. Technical topics covered include tools, line weights, perspective, proportion, composition, shading, serial views, and context. Exercises are illustrated with beautiful sketches specially created by the author. Sketching for Architecture + Interior Design is an indispensable and practical guide for students wishing to master the art of looking and sketching. To quote Travis "drawing is truly a tool for seeing. To draw an object, interior or building, you have to look at the subject in a new way. The sketching process is a means of expanding one's creativity and awakening the senses." About the Author Stephanie Travis is Director and Associate Professor of the Interior Architecture and Design Program at The George Washington University, Washington, DC. She has extensive academic and professional experience, and was also Associate Editor of the International Journal of Design Education, 2014.

In order to tell his own history, as well as his stories, Max Pam has invented and gradually perfected an original visual language that recognizes no distinctions between writing and photography, between an image borrowed and an image taken, between the effects of chemistry and those of painting, between collage and patchwork. The result is a collection of forcefully suggestive images that, in breathtaking sequences, establish dialogues among reality, hallucinations, references of all kinds, the intimate and social spheres. About the Author Max Pam (Melbourne, 1949) is an Australian photographer. Pam's first survey exhibition was held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1986, followed by a mid-career retrospective at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1991, his largest solo show to date was at the Sogo Nara Museum of Art in Japan, and he was the subject of a major exhibition at the Comptoir de la Photographie in Paris in 1990, which covered the work of three decades. Carbondale After Dark And Other Stories - 3rd Edition by H B Koplowitz (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 168Genre: ArchitectureSub-Genre: HistoryFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Dome PublicationsAge Range: AdultBook theme: Contemporary (1945-)Author: H B KoplowitzLanguage: English About the Book From panty raids to riots, "Carbondale After Dark" is a profusely illustrated anthology of history, essays and short stories that chronicles how a sleepy little college town in the Midwest became a hippie haven and radical outpost during the 1960s and '70s. Third edition has three new stories. Book Synopsis From panty raids to riots, "Carbondale After Dark" is a profusely illustrated anthology of history, essays and short stories that chronicles how a sleepy little college town in the Midwest became a hippie haven and radical outpost during the 1960s and '70s. Some call that Carbondale's golden age, while others say it was the city's hippie phase. Either way, it left a mark on the town and those who went through those tumultuous times, and it remains a period of interest to those who came after.First published in 1982, the book has become a touchstone for those who were there, and a revelation for those who were not. Author H.B. Koplowitz provides a blow-by-blow account of the political and cultural upheavals that led to the May 1970 riots in Carbondale, and how protests evolved into street parties and a massive Halloween celebration. The first third of the book focuses on the notorious downtown "strip" during the 1960s and '70s, when Carbondale was invaded by hippies, freaks, massive protests and even more massive street parties. It also chronicles streakers, bands, bars, hangouts, protest movements and street people, and efforts by city and school officials to control the madness. In other words, all the things that get left out of official histories and Chamber of Commerce brochures.Amply illustrated with historic photos and graphics, the anthology also includes period essays and short stories with such titles as "Kidnapped by Jesus Freaks" and "Kid Clyde: An Existentualist's Horror Story"; rants on such subjects as women's lib and "afrophobia"; and a poem of teenage angst, "The Horny Blues."The expanded third edition adds three new stories: "Carbondale Before Dark" describes growing up in Carbondale in the 1950s and early '60s. "Bucky's Dome" is about living in futurist Buckminster Fuller's dome home in the early 1980s. "Ghosts of Carbondale Past" is a reflection on a 2017 reunion concert of 1970s Carbondale bands.Chocked full of history and memories, Carbondale After Dark makes a great gift for anyone who has lived in Carbondale or gone to SIU. Review Quotes Carbondale After Dark is a fascinating glimpse back in time, written in a tone and style that whisks you away to the tumultuous decades of the 1960s and '70s. It is worth picking up if you can find a copy. --Michael A. KleenReally captures the spirit of Carbondale in the late 60's early 70's when we were there! We really love it.For me it was informative to learn what preceded my time there and what came after. Not surprisingly, like anyone who enjoyed their coming of age while at college, I found it sweetly nostalgic as well.
