Return of the God Hypothesis - by Stephen C Meyer (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 576Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: Life SciencesFormat: HardcoverPublisher: HarperOneAge Range: AdultBook theme: EvolutionAuthor: Stephen C MeyerLanguage: English About the Book "The anticipated third book from New York Times bestselling author and respected Intelligent Design scholar Stephen C. Meyer makes a compelling argument for the existence of God based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology"-- Book Synopsis The New York Times bestselling author of Darwin's Doubt presents groundbreaking scientific evidence of the existence of God, based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology.Beginning in the late 19th century, many intellectuals began to insist that scientific knowledge conflicts with traditional theistic belief--that science and belief in God are "at war." Philosopher of science Stephen Meyer challenges this view by examining three scientific discoveries with decidedly theistic implications. Building on the case for the intelligent design of life that he developed in Signature in the Cell and Darwin's Doubt, Meyer demonstrates how discoveries in cosmology and physics coupled with those in biology help to establish the identity of the designing intelligence behind life and the universe. Meyer argues that theism--with its affirmation of a transcendent, intelligent and active creator--best explains the evidence we have concerning biological and cosmological origins. Previously Meyer refrained from attempting to answer questions about "who" might have designed life. Now he provides an evidence-based answer to perhaps the ultimate mystery of the universe. In so doing, he reveals a stunning conclusion: the data support not just the existence of an intelligent designer of some kind--but the existence of a personal God. Review Quotes "More than 400 pages of straightforward, engrossing prose, close reasoning, intellectual history, and cosmology, all in the interest of asking the most important questions about existence itself. An astonishing achievement."--Peter Robinson, Murdoch Distinguished Policy Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and former White House speechwriter"No one in my experience can explicate such complex material with the grace and clarity that seem so effortless to Stephen Meyer. With meticulous rational analysis of the latest discoveries in cosmology, physics, and biology, Meyer confirms a truth ideologues find too frightening to consider. Their ad hominem attacks on his brilliant work, confirm its importance.--Dean Koontz, New York Times #1 bestselling authorA meticulously researched, lavishly illustrated, and thoroughly argued case against the new atheism. Even if your mind is made up--especially if it is--Meyer's refreshing take on the origins of the Universe is a joy to read. You may not come away convinced, but you'll be richer for the journey.--Dr. Brian Keating, Chancellor's Distinguished Professor of Physics, University of California, San Diego, and author of Losing the Nobel Prize.Meyer masterfully summarizes the current evidence from cosmology, physics and biology showing that the more we learn about the universe and nature, the more relevant the 'God hypothesis' becomes. --Dr. Anthony Futerman, Joseph Meyerhoff Professor of Biochemistry, Weizmann Institute of Science, IsraelThis book makes it clear that far from being an unscientific claim, intelligent design is valid science.--Brian Josephson, Emeritus Professor of Physics, University of Cambridge, Fellow of the Royal Society Nobel Laureate in Physics With this book, Stephen Meyer earns a place in the pantheon of distinguished, non-reductive natural philosophers of the last 120 years, from the great French savant Pierre Duhem, through A.N. Whitehead, to Michael Polanyi...A profound, judicious book of great value bringing to bear advanced, scientific expertise and philosophical, integrative wisdom.--Dr. Michael D. Aeschliman, emeritus professor Boston University, author The Restoration of Man: C.S. Lewis and the Continuing Case Against Scientism."Scientist and philosopher Meyer has discussed intelligent design previously but has not gone as far as he does here in terms of making the case for God. He does so citing new evidence from cosmology, physics, and biology, especially as it applies to DNA research. Meyer knows how to take readers' hands and lead them through the history before showing how new discoveries can be used to undermine the cases made by anti-design theorists such as Richard Dawkins, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and even Bill Nye the Science Guy. Agree or disagree, there's lots to ponder here."--Booklist"A truly superb analysis of the relevant evidence. Stephen Meyer convincingly demonstrates that the God hypothesis is not just an adequate explanation for the origin of our fine-tuned universe and biosphere: it is the best explanation."--David J Galloway, MD DSc FRCS FRCP, Honorary Professor of Surgery at College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences University of Glasgow; Former President, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow."Meyer's book is a masterclass, lucidly exploring every alternative from multiple points of view, while persuasively showing that the God Hypothesis is the best explanation of our finely-tuned, information-rich universe. It does irreparable damage to atheist rhetoric."--John C. Walton, PhD, DSc, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Research Professor of Chemistry, University of St. Andrews"When you don't understand living systems, ignorance permits discounting a Creator. But when the scientific details are thrust upon you, you're forced to ask: How on Earth did that happen? Thus, the God hypothesis returns. Stephen Meyer convincingly drives the point home: How could it be this way? Only God!"--James M. Tour, Ph.D., T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Nano-Engineering, Rice University.Reviewing all relevant evidence from cosmology to molecular biology, Meyer builds an irrefutable 'case for God.' The logic throughout is compelling and the book almost impossible to put down. A masterpiece. Easily the best, most lucid, comprehensive defense of the 'God hypothesis' in print. A unique tour de force. --Michael Denton, M.D., Ph.D., former Senior Research Fellow, Biochemistry, University of Otago, Author, Nature's Destiny"Stephen Meyer is a genuine renaissance person. His work tears down many purported barriers between science, philosophy, and religion. An important book of both breadth and depth."--Dr. Henry F. Schaefer III, Graham Perdue Professor of Chemistry, Director, Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry, University of GeorgiaA comprehensive and lucid argument for theism as the best explanation for the scientific evidence. Stephen Meyer has a true gift for conveying complex concepts clearly.--Dr. Robert Kaita, former Principal Research Physicist, Princeton Plasma Physics LaboratoryDr. Meyer does a superb job in accurately describing the physics and cosmology that show the universe had a beginning. He also convincingly shows that quantum mechanics will not eliminate a cosmological singularity.--Dr. Frank Tipler, Professor of Physics, Tulane University; Co-Author, The Anthropic-Cosmological Principle (Oxford University Press)

A Mathematician's Apology - by G H Hardy (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 102Genre: MathematicsSub-Genre: Number TheoryFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Martino Fine BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: G H HardyLanguage: English Book Synopsis 2017 Reprint of 1941 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. G. H. Hardy was one of this century's finest mathematical thinkers, renowned among his contemporaries as a 'real mathematician ... the purest of the pure'. This 'Apology', written in 1940, offers a brilliant and engaging account of mathematics as very much more than a science; when it was first published, Graham Greene hailed it alongside Henry James's notebooks as 'the best account of what it was like to be a creative artist'.One of the main themes of the book is the beauty that mathematics possesses, which Hardy compares to painting and poetry. For Hardy, the most beautiful mathematics was that which had no practical applications in the outside world (pure mathematics) and, particularly, his own special field of number theory.

No school leader is immune to the effects of discrimination, bad politics, revenge, or ego-driven coworkers. If you've ever worked in such conditions, you know that adversaries can make your job as a school leader miserable. But even if you're lucky enough to be thriving in your current role, you've probably seen leaders whose careers have been tanked by difficult and demanding circumstances. You may even wonder from time to time, "Am I next?" In Escaping the School Leader's Dunk Tank, Rebecca Coda and Rick Jetter interviewed superintendents, principals, and other educational leaders across the nation who have faced "dunk tank" situations. Through real-life stories and by sharing insightful research, the authors (who are dunk tank survivors themselves) equip school leaders with the practical knowledge and emotional tools necessary to survive and, better yet, avoid getting "dunked." You'll learn: * Which emotions may be triggering your adversary's negative behaviors. * How to recognize the most common tactics used against school leaders. * Why building positive relationships is important to your survival. * What you may be doing to hurt others' careers...or even your own. * How to redefine yourself and reclaim your life and career if you've ever been "dunked." The keys to prevailing are being proactive, learning to recognize the warning signs of adversarial conditions, and responding quickly and wisely. Escaping the School Leader's Dunk Tank will show you how.

Book Synopsis In her 20 years of service in K-12 education systems, Trise Moore never met an educator who said they did not want to be inspired or supported by their students' families. The truth is that family engagement does take work, from both the school and the community structures we reach out to, and with little funds and time allocated to collaboration or training, educators are at a loss for where and how to begin family and community engagement. But to close the achievement gap and increase student equity, engaging previously unreached families can be the single most effective change you make. In Unreached, Moore breaks down four equity partnership recommendations that lay the foundation for five leadership practices to assist individual teachers, school teams, and building leaders as they collaborate with families to develop authentic, outcome-based approaches that support student achievement. Filled with practice scenarios, tips & strategies, and reflection questions, this guide will assess where you are now; facilitate collaborative school, family, and community interactions for growth; and provide the structure necessary to organize and encourage continued engagement. This workbook will ask a lot of you. The author also considers the undeniable connection between reading and writing, as well as the important role of motivation as it relates to reading. Finally, as a cutting-edge researcher, Willingham tackles the intersection of our rapidly changing technology and its effects on learning to read and reading. Every teacher, reading specialist, literacy coach, and school administrator will find this book invaluable. Understanding the fascinating science behind the magic of reading is essential for every educator. Indeed, every "reader" will be captivated by the dynamic but invisible workings of their own minds. About the Author DANIEL T. WILLINGHAM, PHD, is professor of psychology at the University of Virginia. His bestselling first book, Why Don't Students Like School?, was hailed as "brilliant analysis" by The Wall Street Journal and "a triumph" by The Washington Post, recommended by scores of education-related magazines and blogs, and translated into many languages. This state of affairs is largely due to the advent of satellite-based navigation systems, particularly the Global Positioning System (GPS). These Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are still rapidly evolving with more capability and even greater robustness. The fundamental purpose of all of them is determining location in four dimensions--3 of geographical positions plus time. A user is indifferent to the source of location knowledge--any technique will do if it is reliable. While much of this book is devoted to satellite-based navigation systems, or SatNavs, we intend to give full explanations of virtually all modern sources of position, navigation, and time (PNT)"-- Book Synopsis Covers the latest developments in PNT technologies, including integrated satellite navigation, sensor systems, and civil applications Featuring sixty-four chapters that are divided into six parts, this two-volume work provides comprehensive coverage of the state-of-the-art in satellite-based position, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies and civilian applications. It also examines alternative navigation technologies based on other signals-of-opportunity and sensors and offers a comprehensive treatment on integrated PNT systems for consumer and commercial applications. Volume 1 of Position, Navigation, and Timing Technologies in the 21st Century: Integrated Satellite Navigation, Sensor Systems, and Civil Applications contains three parts and focuses on the satellite navigation systems, technologies, and engineering and scientific applications. Number of Pages: 109Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: HistorySeries Title: Science Classics Module for Humanities StudiesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Green Lion PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Johannes KeplerLanguage: English About the Book Johannes Kepler wrote Astronomia Nova (1609) in a singleminded drive to sweep away the ancient and medieval clutter of spheres and orbs and to establish a new truth in astronomy, based on physical causality. Thus a good part of the book is given over to a nontechnical discussion of how planets can be made to move through space by physical forces. This is the theme of the readings in the present module. The selection includes Kepler's Introduction as well as a selection of chapters that develop the physics of planetary motion. In these ground-breaking chapters, the true Kepler emerges, not as a speculative mystic or a number-crunching drudge, but as a first-rate scientific thinker with a wonderfully engaging narrative style. The Allegany County, NY commitment to education began by establishing of the first elementary school in 1802, the first private high schools in 1848, and the first university in 1836. Book Synopsis Fields of Learning thoroughly explains the rich history of one-room schoolhouses, and their metamorphosis through time. Their history has merit standing alone, but Fields of Learning also completes their history using 14 illustrations and over 180 pictures. You will be transported back in time as you learn about the early foundations of American education.One-room schools were a product of a patriotic agricultural America, which believed that education enriched one religiously, promoted economic opportunity and social mobility while anchoring communities around the school. Rural schools promoted education to extend the virtues and democratic values of the United States to each new generation. Allegany County, New York's commitment to education began with the establishment of the first elementary school in 1802, the first private high schools in 1848, and the first university in 1836. Rural schools in Allegany County were usually built on less productive farmland and in town near the business property of the person who donated the land.One-room schools architectural styles included: vernacular: a one-room log cabin, folk vernacular structures resembling agricultural outbuildings with a single entrance and two or three windows on each side, mass vernacular buildings, which could pass for churches or town halls, architect designed buildings with recognized architectural features and a variety of building materials, and monumental, a multi-storied structure with multiple rooms on each of two floors. One-room schools measured 28 by 40 feet with a height of 15 feet. Their length was believed based on the range of the human voice. The year 1910 in the history of Allegany County, New York offers the most detailed understanding of the cost and value for one-room schools. Enrollments, state aid, average attendance, assessed valuation, expenditures, cost/person, and tax rates were recorded and analyzed. The early 20th Century data provides detailed information on the curricula for each grade level from grade one to grade eight. Documentation provides insight into what expectations were for both teachers and pupils as the educational experiment progressed from year to year. As the United States became less agricultural and more industrial, the demand for high school education increased. Allegany County rose to the challenge establishing seventeen high schools. New York State involvement established norms for teacher training, curricula, and educational programs, which one-room schools could no longer meet. Education in 20th Century Allegany County became one of educational consolidation with one-room schools becoming a memory and consolidated schools encompassing grades kindergarten to twelve the norm. Consolidation gradually removed schools for any grade level from the majority of Allegany County's twenty-nine townships. In 2019, there are only twelve school districts in the entire County. The closing of schools eventually led to the collapse of many County villages and hamlets illustrating how education was closely entwined with community and how one could not survive without the other.

Windfall - by McKenzie Funk (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 336Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: Global Warming & Climate ChangeFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Penguin BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: McKenzie FunkLanguage: English About the Book "An investigation into how entrepreneurial people and institutions around the globe are cashing in on the new world being created by global warming--and who will pay the price for it"-- Book Synopsis A fascinating investigation into how people around the globe are cashing in on a warming world McKenzie Funk has spent the last six years reporting around the world on how we are preparing for a warmer planet. Funk shows us that the best way to understand the catastrophe of global warming is to see it through the eyes of those who see it most clearly--as a market opportunity. Global warming's physical impacts can be separated into three broad categories: melt, drought, and deluge. Funk travels to two dozen countries to profile entrepreneurial people who see in each of these forces a potential windfall. The melt is a boon for newly arable, mineral-rich regions of the Arctic, such as Greenland--and for the surprising kings of the manmade snow trade, the Israelis. The process of desalination, vital to Israel's survival, can produce a snowlike by-product that alpine countries use to prolong their ski season.Drought creates opportunities for private firefighters working for insurance companies in California as well as for fund managers backing south Sudanese warlords who control local farmland. As droughts raise food prices globally, there is no more precious asset. The deluge--the rising seas, surging rivers, and superstorms that will threaten island nations and coastal cities--has been our most distant concern, but after Hurricane Sandy and failure after failure to cut global carbon emissions, it is not so distant. For Dutch architects designing floating cities and American scientists patenting hurricane defenses, the race is on. For low-lying countries like Bangladesh, the coming deluge presents an existential threat.Funk visits the front lines of the melt, the drought, and the deluge to make a human accounting of the booming business of global warming. By letting climate change continue unchecked, we are choosing to adapt to a warming world. Containing the resulting surge will be big business; some will benefit, but much of the planet will suffer. McKenzie Funk has investigated both sides, and what he has found will shock us all. To understand how the world is preparing to warm, Windfall follows the money. Review Quotes Honorable Mention for the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award The Wall Street Journal "In Windfall McKenzie Funk, an intrepid American journalist, reports on the lesser-known victims and profiteers of climate change brings a dizzyingly abstruse phenomenon down to a more human scale. Mr. Funk leads us away from the rarefied air of Al Gore and his lethal PowerPoint slides, to mingle with the militiamen, inventors, politicians and activists trying to find their way through an era of turmoil." The Associated Press "Funk has written a fun book humanizing the problems of climate change, focused on the colorful entrepreneurs who see in an increasingly inhospitable world golden opportunities." Nature This exposé of the powers and people that view global warming as an investment opportunity is darkly humorous and brilliantly researched. Journalist McKenzie Funk looks at the impacts deemed a windfall for 'climate capitalists': melting ice, drought, sea-level rise and superstorms. He reports far and wide, on the oil-rich far north, where nations jostle as the ice retreats; blaze-prone California and its burgeoning band of firebreak specialists; water-rich South Sudan, where large tracts of foreign-owned farmland could become a gold mine as other regions dry up; and beyond. Men's Journal The idea that, when it comes to climate change, the meaningful divide isn't between believers and doubters but winners and losers is at the heart of McKenzie Funk's immersive and startling Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming. Mother Jones Most writings on climate change are tedious or polemical. This fabulous book is neither. Journalist McKenzie Funk travels the globe, mingling with the characters who are cashing in (or preparing to) on global warming: Wall Street land and water speculators, Greenland secessionists, Israeli snowmakers, Dutch seawall developers, geoengineering patent trolls, private firefighters, mosquito-abating scientists, Big Oil scenario planners, and African officials overseeing the first phase of a quixotic 4,7000-mile-long foliage barrier against the encroaching Sahara. Rather than waste our time on a settled question (duh, it's real!), Funk offers an up-close-and-personal glimpse of climate change's likely winners--and inevitable losers. Wired "Some Like it Hot: Forget bitcoin--savvy investors bet on water....In his new book, Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming, McKenzie Funk investigates the profiteers cashing in on the planet's woes. GQ "In Windfall, McKenzie Funk introduces us to people betting money on our dear planet's decimation. Spoiler: They're rich." Outside Magazine "There have been plenty of books documenting the myriad ways that climate change will take us all down. McKenzie Funk takes a contrarian approach, reporting on the people--and, in the case of Greenland and Canada, countries--that are poised to profit handsomely from the coming chaos." Scientific American Funk's reporting brings him face-to-face with individuals who are investing in planetary crisis. Far from vilifying these opportunists, he attempts to see the warming world through their eyes. Canadian Business The business of climate change is growing, in other words, at least somewhat because political action on climate change has so overwhelmingly failed. Barnes & Noble: The bad news is that we're not cutting our carbon emissions. The 'good' news, according to McKenzie Funk's Windfall is that greedy banks and ambitious entrepreneurs are making billions of dollars on global warming. Much of these new frontiers of money-making derive from calculated bets on continued failure and warming, not on corrective measures. Funk's modern day muckraking lends new perspective and detail to mainstream media coverage and the ongoing debates about climate change. Definitely a conversation starter. The New Yorker's Page-Turner: Funk's take on global-warming profiteering is as entertaining as it is disturbing. Kirkus Reviews (STARRED): "A shocking account of how governments and corporations are confronting the crises caused by global warming... A well-written, useful global profile emphasizing concrete solutions rather than ideological abstractions." Publishers Weekly: For most of the planet, the specter of global warming is ominous, but as journalist Funk reveals in this startling book, there are those who view the Earth's dangerous meltdown as a golden opportunity...Funk's original, forthright take on this little-discussed profit-taking trend in the climate change sweepstakes is very unsettling. Eliza Griswold, author of The Tenth Parallel Funk's talent shimmers from the pages of Windfall. Here is a brilliant young stylist at work, pushing the boundaries of investigative journalism and literary non-fiction. With grace, humor and hard-nosed reporting on the startling business of climate profiteering, he takes us along on a searing ride into the maw of the apocalypse. Charles Graeber, author of The Good Nurse "Funk is a first-rate storyteller who packs adventure and humor in his journalist's bag, and delights in the absurd details of business as unusual. The result is a meticulously researched romp through the backrooms of the climate change industry, by turns thrilling and appalling, and ultimately rather important. There's money under the melting ice, and Funk follows it. Perhaps the only fun book on global climate change you'll ever read." Elizabeth Kolbert, author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe Smart, daring, and darkly funny, Windfall offers a new take on perhaps the world's most intractable problem. McKenzie Funk is a gifted storyteller. Eric Klinenberg, author of Heat Wave and Going Solo Climate change may well be humanity's greatest challenge, but here McKenzie Funk offers definitive evidence that it's also a great way to make a buck. Windfall is a gripping account of how banks, energy companies, engineers, and entrepreneurs have turned a global crisis into a golden opportunity, harvesting short-term profits while sowing the seeds of future ruin. It's an engaging, infuriating, and important story about the way the world works now, and about the reasons it may not work at all tomorrow. Donovan Hohn, author of Moby-Duck Exploring the profitable frontiers of climate change, Funk travels the globe like some sort of journalistic special agent, patrolling the melting Arctic on a Canadian battleship one minute, breakfasting with the son of a Sudanese warlord the next. His secret weapons: a highly sensitive irony detector and a satirist's eye for vanities and vices that Twain would have admired. The result is a wonder, a nonfiction eco-thriller that is disturbing, yes, revelatory, yes, but also a lot more fun than books about ecological catastrophe are supposed to be. Jon Mooallem, author of Wild Ones McKenzie Funk has traveled around a planet that's melting, flooding and drying out all at once to meet the peculiar characters who are making the biggest, amoral hedge of our time: finding the value and opportunity hidden in all this ecological upheaval. Windfall is a shocking and important book that reads, at times, like dystopian science fiction written by Michael Lewis. But this unrecognizable world is our world, of course. Funk argues that the people he meets merely see it more clearly than the rest of us do. About the Author McKenzie Funk is a journalist whose work has appeared in Harper's, National Geographic, Rolling Stone, GQ, Outside, and The New York Times. A National Magazine Award and Livingston Award finalist and the winner of the Oakes Prize for Environmental Journalism, he was a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan, where he studied economics and systems thinking. He lives in Seattle with his wife and son.

Ages of Gaia - (Commonwealth Fund Book Program) by James Lovelock (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 278Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: Environmental ScienceSeries Title: Commonwealth Fund Book ProgramFormat: PaperbackPublisher: W. W. Norton & CompanyAge Range: AdultAuthor: James LovelockLanguage: English About the Book James Lovelock proposes that all living species are components of that organism, as cells are components of the human body. Book Synopsis Lovelock first sketched out his theory in his bestseller, Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth. People all over the world embraced the theory, and in less than ten years it moved from the margins of scientific research to the mainstream. Lovelock argues that such things as the level of oxygen, the formation of clouds, and the saltiness of the oceans may all be controlled by biological processes. He believes that living organisms create the optimum conditions for their own existence, and in so doing create the superorganism Gaia. The New York Times Book Review has called his arguments in favor of Gaia plausible and above all illuminating. From the Back Cover The Earth, James Lovelock proposes, behaves as if it were a superorganism, made up from all the living things and from their material environment. When he first sketched out his brilliant Gaia theory in the 1970s, people around the world embraced it; within a short time Gaia has moved from the margins of scientific research to the mainstream. James Lovelock argues that such things as the level of oxygen, the formation of clouds, and the saltiness of the oceans may all be controlled by interacting physical, chemical, and biological processes. He believes that "the self-regulation of climate and chemical composition is a process that emerges from the tightly coupled evolution of rocks, air, and ocean - in addition to that of organisms. Such interlocking self-regulation, while rarely optimal - consider the cold and hot places of the earth, the wet and the dry - nevertheless keeps the Earth a fit place for life". The New York Times Book Review has called his arguments in favor of Gaia "plausible and above all illuminating". Now, in an updated paperback edition, fully revised, the author amplifies his account of how Gaia works with descriptions of new fields of research that have been opened by this pathbreaking concept. Review Quotes This book describes a set of observations about the life of our planet which may, one day, be recognized as one of the major discontinuities in human thought. If Lovelock turns out to be as right in his view of things as I believe he is, we will be viewing the Earth as a coherent system of life, self-regulating and self-changing, a sort of immense living organism.--Lewis Thomas

Book Synopsis Ohios bedrock reveals a rich story of the ancient landscapes and animalsmassive meat-eating reptiles, footlong clams, lumbering mammothsthat existed thousands to hundreds of millions of years ago. Fluctuating seas full of marine life, widespread floodplains and rivers choked with sediment, and mile-thick ice sheets from the north all shaped Ohios present landscape. But Ohios geologic tale has a human side, too. Native Americans fashioned razor-sharp flint spear points; oil, gas, and coal fueled several economic booms; and sandstone and limestone built communities and thriving economies. The 25 road guides of Roadside Geology of Ohio, complete with 59 maps and figures and 172 photographs, lead you from one corner of the state to the otherfrom the flat till plains of the west to the hilly eastern Allegheny Plateau, and from the Ohio River valley to the Lake Erie shoreline. Mark Camps clear writing explains how caverns and disappearing streams form in karst; why mud cracks, ripple marks, and cross-bedding layers are entombed in sedimentary rock; and how grooves up to 10 feet deep were gouged into the limestone of Kelleys Island. From deserted boomtowns to Ohios big cities, Roadside Geology of Ohio thoroughly reveals the Buckeye States fascinating and dynamic geology.

Contextual Wellbeing - by Helen Street (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 194Genre: EducationSub-Genre: Educational Policy & ReformFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Wise SolutionsAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Helen StreetLanguage: English About the Book Contextual Wellbeing is a state of flourishing that arises from membership of an equitable, inclusive, and cohesive environment. Dr. Helen Street believes that we need to support Contextual Wellbeing in our schools to effectively help young people to flourish; and that means changing our understanding of what it means to be a 'good school'. Book Synopsis Our schools and colleges have never done so much to 'teach' whole school wellbeing, support mental health and engage young people in learning. Yet, young people have never been so disengaged, demotivated or distressed in our schools. Dr. Helen Street believes that we need to embrace and support Contextual Wellbeing if we are to effectively help young people to flourish; and that means changing our fundamental understanding of what it means to be a 'good school'. Contextual Wellbeing is a state of health, happiness, and positive engagement [in learning] that arises from membership of an equitable, inclusive, and cohesive [school] environmentIf we are to help young people attain a love of learning and flourish at school, then we need to explicitly support their wellbeing. In this book, Helen Street introduces a definition that underpins an alternative way of supporting young people, and an alternative way of delivering education. All too often we try to help a child who is distressed at school by encouraging them to change or to develop as an individual. We want them to be more confident, more resilient, less anxious. But what if the answer is not about trying to help that individual to change, in whatever capacity? What if the answer is all about creating a healthier environment for that individual?I believe that wellbeing is an interplay between our best individual self and our best environment. As such, happiness and success are far more than individual pursuits, or even individual responsibilities. Lasting happiness develops from the ongoing creation of healthy connections to others and to the world around us.Happiness is a positive state of wellbeing resulting from our connection to a social environment that supports and nurtures us to become the best we can be. Medical breakthroughs, public health institutions, rising standards of living, and the other advances of modern life have given each person about 20,000 extra days on average. This book attempts to help the reader understand where that progress came from and what forces keep people alive longer. The author also considers how to avoid decreases in life expectancy as public health systems face unprecedented challenges, and what current technologies or interventions could reduce the impact of future crises"-- Book Synopsis "Offers a useful reminder of the role of modern science in fundamentally transforming all of our lives." --President Barack Obama (on Twitter) "An important book." --Steven Pinker, The New York Times Book Review Now also a PBS documentary series: the surprising story of how humans gained what amounts to an extra life, from the bestselling author of How We Got to Now and Where Good Ideas Come From As a species we have doubled our life expectancy in just one hundred years. All the advances of modern life--the medical breakthroughs, the public health institutions, the rising standards of living--have given us each about twenty thousand extra days on average. There are few measures of human progress more astonishing than our increased longevity. This book is Steven Johnson's attempt to understand where that progress came from. How many of those extra twenty thousand days came from vaccines, or the decrease in famines, or seatbelts? What are the forces that now keep us alive longer? Behind each breakthrough lies an inspiring story of cooperative innovation, of brilliant thinkers bolstered by strong systems of public support and collaborative networks. But it is not enough simply to remind ourselves that progress is possible. How do we avoid decreases in life expectancy as our public health systems face unprecedented challenges? What current technologies or interventions that could reduce the impact of future crises are we somehow ignoring? A study in how meaningful change happens in society, Extra Life is an ode to the enduring power of common goals and public resources. The most fundamental progress we have experienced over the past few centuries has not come from big corporations or start-ups. It has come, instead, from activists struggling for reform; from university-based and publicly funded scientists sharing their findings open-source-style; and from nonprofit agencies spreading new innovations around the world. Review Quotes Praise for Extra Life "Johnson is a fine storyteller. . . . Energy at the Crossroads - (Mit Press) by Vaclav Smil (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 427Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: Environmental ScienceSeries Title: Mit PressFormat: PaperbackPublisher: MIT PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Vaclav SmilLanguage: English About the Book An objective, comprehensive, and accessible examination of today's most crucial problem: preserving the environment in the face of society's insatiable demand for energy. Book Synopsis An objective, comprehensive, and accessible examination of today's most crucial problem: preserving the environment in the face of society's insatiable demand for energy. In Energy at the Crossroads, Vaclav Smil considers the twenty-first century's crucial question: how to reconcile the modern world's unceasing demand for energy with the absolute necessity to preserve the integrity of the biosphere. With this book he offers a comprehensive, accessible guide to today's complex energy issues--how to think clearly and logically about what is possible and what is desirable in our energy future. After a century of unprecedented production growth, technical innovation, and expanded consumption, the world faces a number of critical energy challenges arising from unequal resource distribution, changing demand patterns, and environmental limitations. The fundamental message of Energy at the Crossroads is that our dependence on fossil fuels must be reduced not because of any imminent resource shortages but because the widespread burning of oil, coal, and natural gas damages the biosphere and presents increasing economic and security problems as the world relies on more expensive supplies and Middle Eastern crude oil.Smil begins with an overview of the twentieth century's long-term trends and achievements in energy production. He then discusses energy prices, the real cost of energy, and energy linkages--the effect energy issues have on the economy, on quality of life, on the environment, and in wartime. He discusses the pitfalls of forecasting, giving many examples of failed predictions and showing that unexpected events can disprove complex models. And he examines the pros and cons not only of fossil fuels but also of alternative fuels such as hydroenergy, biomass energy, wind power, and solar power. He gave confidence to the quiet, shy and lonely. He calmed the angry. For eight years Golden Retriever Google accompanied his best friend, Sandy Childs, when she worked in schools. Google's patient, gentle and loving nature proved an inspiration in helping children who were reluctant readers, writers and learners, many of whom had additional learning needs and emotional issues, to find joy in learning. The Secret Life of Sharks - by A Peter Klimley (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 304Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: Life SciencesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Simon & SchusterAge Range: AdultBook theme: Marine BiologyAuthor: A Peter KlimleyLanguage: English Book Synopsis Marine biologist Pete Klimley swims with the sharks. He was one of the first scientists to free-dive among sharks, and he has spent nearly thirty years studying shark behavior, sometimes swimming in schools of several hundred sharks. From his firsthand observations he has learned that sharks are not the vicious man-eaters that we imagine, but fascinating animals with complex behaviors. Most people who think of sharks at all think immediately of great white sharks. But there are more than four hundred species of shark. Dr. Klimley has studied several species, most notably the great white and the hammerhead. (He describes the great white as the athlete among sharks, and the hammerhead as the Ph.D. of the shark world.) In The Secret Life of Sharks Dr. Klimley reveals the significant discoveries he made about hammerhead navigation and great white eating habits. By studying hammerheads gathered around underwater seamounts, Dr. Klimley learned that hammerheads rely on sophisticated tracking of ocean-floor magnetism to navigate. His long-term study of great white sharks off the California coast demonstrated that these huge sharks prefer to eat seals and sea lions because of the energy contained in their fatty bodies. They are selective eaters, not the man-eaters we expect, and they sometimes go weeks between meals. But Dr. Klimley did observe a ritualized behavior that great whites practice in order to avoid deadly disputes over prey that one shark has captured and another wants. Although we have learned a great deal about shark behavior, says Dr. Klimley, there is much that we do not know. Unfortunately we are destroying these magnificent creatures of the deep through overfishing and degradation of the oceans. Already some populations of sharks have declined steeply. Vividly written by one of the foremost authorities on sharks, The Secret Life of Sharks is a fascinating account of some of the world's most magnificent animals. Review Quotes Jean-Michel Cousteau President, Ocean Futures Society When it comes to sharks, Dr. Peter Klimley has answered the true call of adventure -- to see for himself, up close. His pioneering work reveals sharks' secrets, including their decline, and puts to rest the myth of the shark as a mindless feeding machine. Equally important, his story reminds us that fear is never a good guide. His direct, informed observations make for good science, and for good reading.Jean-Michel Cousteau President, Ocean Futures SocietyWhen it comes to sharks, Dr. Peter Klimley has answered the true call of adventure -- to see for himself, up close. A Most Elegant Equation - by David Stipp (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 240Genre: MathematicsSub-Genre: History & PhilosophyFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Basic BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: David StippLanguage: English About the Book Includes bibliographical references (pages 193-199) and index. Book Synopsis An award-winning science writer introduces us to mathematics using the extraordinary equation that unites five of mathematics' most important numbers Bertrand Russell wrote that mathematics can exalt "as surely as poetry." This is especially true of one equation: ei(pi) + 1 = 0, the brainchild of Leonhard Euler, the Mozart of mathematics. More than two centuries after Euler's death, it is still regarded as a conceptual diamond of unsurpassed beauty. Called Euler's identity or God's equation, it includes just five numbers but represents an astonishing revelation of hidden connections. It ties together everything from basic arithmetic to compound interest, the circumference of a circle, trigonometry, calculus, and even infinity. In David Stipp's hands, Euler's identity formula becomes a contemplative stroll through the glories of mathematics. The result is an ode to this magical field. Review Quotes "A Most Elegant Equation is a smart, incisive account of Euler's famous equation. It beautifully and seamlessly straddles the line between the salient ideas of the equation's proof and its historical, scientific, and philosophical significance."--- John Allen Paulos, professor of mathematics at Temple University and author of Innumeracy and A Numerate Life---"As a non-professional recovering mathlete, I found A Most Elegant Equation a delightful excursion into the beauty of mathematical thinking. Not only is Stipp a great storyteller, he is a terrific teacher with an easy conversational style who makes the most complex concepts lucid. For anyone who was ever afraid of math, here's your cure."--- Richard A. Friedman, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and contributing Op-Ed writer for the New York Times---"Does mathematics transcend our humanness, or is it simply a human construct? Either way, the astonishing interconnections and stunning beauty that mathematics offers can only serve to uplift our human souls. The poetry of 'e to the i pi, ' as exemplified by David Stipp, masterfully proves this."--- James Tanton, Mathematician-at-Large for the Mathematical Association of America---"Even though Pi, e, and i are Very Important Numbers, they seemed unrelated---until Euler discovered a simple, beautiful, and totally unexpected link between them. This delightful book shows us why the formula is surprising, yet inevitable. Thoroughly enjoyable!"--- Ian Stewart, author of Significant Figures---"If you are an intelligent reader--even one with a weak mathematical background... you could learn a lot from this book, and enjoy the experience."--Mathematical Association of America"Mr. Stipp's roving account is propelled by his folksy sense of humor."--Wall Street Journal"Stipp gives his reader a good shot at getting hold of something beautiful."--The Weekly Standard About the Author David Stipp is an award-winning science writer whose work has appeared in Scientific American, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Science, and other publications. The author of The Youth Pill, he lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Origin of Species - 150th Edition by Charles Darwin (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 576Genre: ScienceSub-Genre: Life SciencesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Signet BookAge Range: AdultBook theme: EvolutionAuthor: Charles DarwinLanguage: English About the Book The classic that exploded into public controversy and revolutionized the course of science is now available in this Signet Classic edition. Features include a complete glossary, index, and an Introduction by noted biologist Sir Julian Huxley. Book Synopsis Charles Darwin's classic that exploded into public controversy, revolutionized the course of science, and continues to transform our views of the world. Few other books have created such a lasting storm of controversy as The Origin of Species. Darwin's theory that species derive from other species by a gradual evolutionary process and that the average level of each species is heightened by the "survival of the fittest" stirred up popular debate to fever pitch. Its acceptance revolutionized the course of science. As Sir Julian Huxley, the noted biologist, points out in his illuminating introduction, the importance of Darwin's contribution to modern scientific knowledge is almost impossible to evaluate: "a truly great book, one which can still be read with profit by professional biologist." Includes an Introduction by Sir Julian Huxley Review Quotes "Next to the Bible no work has been quite as influential, in virtually every aspect of human thought, as The Origin of Species."--Ashley Montagu "Darwin was one of history's towering geniuses and ranks with the greatest heroes of man's intellectual progress."--George Gaylord Simpson in The Meaning of Evolution "It is clear that here is one of the most important contributions ever made to philosophic science; and it is at least behooving on scientists, in the light of the accumulation of evidence which the author has summoned in support of his theory, to reconsider the grounds on which their present doctrine of the origin of species is based."--The New York Times "Amazingly, 150 years after the publication of The Origin of Species, Darwin's seminal work on the theory of evolution remains the authoritative tract on the subject."--Library Journal About the Author Charles Robert Darwin was born in 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. At Cambridge University he formed a friendship with J. S. Henslow, a professor of botany, and that association, along with his enthusiasm for collecting beetles, led to "a burning zeal," as he wrote in his Autobiography, for the natural sciences. A voyage to the Southern Hemisphere on the H.M.S. Beagle between 1831 and 1836 would lay the foundation for The Origin of Species, published in 1859. His other works include The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871) and Recollections of My Mind and Character, also titled Autobiography (1887). Charles Darwin's Diary of the Voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle was published posthumously in 1933.
