Blink: Inteligencia Intuitiva - by Malcolm Gladwell (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 296Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: Decision-Making & Problem SolvingFormat: PaperbackPublisher: DebolsilloAge Range: AdultAuthor: Malcolm GladwellLanguage: Spanish About the Book Translation of: Blink: the power of thinking without thinking. Nunca más volverás a pensar en pensar de la misma manera.ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONIn his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others?. In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of blink: the election of Warren Harding; New Coke; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of thin-slicing-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.

How the Other Half Lives - by Jacob a Riis (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 242Genre: Freedom + Security / Law EnforcementSub-Genre: Housing & Urban DevelopmentFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Martino Fine BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Jacob a RiisLanguage: English Book Synopsis 2015 Reprint of 1957 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Originally published in 1890, this is the classic indictment of slum life, written by one of the most famous reformers of the nineteenth century. "How the Other Half Lives: Studies Among the Tenements of New York" explained not only the living conditions in New York slums, but also in the sweatshops in some tenements which paid workers only a few cents a day. The book explains the plight of working children; they would work in factories and at other jobs. Some children became garment workers and newsies (newsboys). The effect was the tearing down of New York's worst tenements, sweatshops, and the reform of the city's schools. The book led to a decade of improvements in Lower East Side conditions, with sewers, garbage collection, and indoor plumbing all following soon after, thanks to public reaction. Our edition reprints the 1957 edition, without the photo illustrations done mostly by Riis himself.

Book Synopsis How did the rich countries really become rich? In this provocative study, Ha-Joon Chang examines the great pressure on developing countries from the developed world to adopt certain 'good policies' and 'good institutions', seen today as necessary for economic development. His conclusions are compelling and disturbing: that developed countries are attempting to 'kick away the ladder' with which they have climbed to the top, thereby preventing developing countries from adopting policies and institutions that they themselves have used. From the Back Cover 'The most important book about the world economy to be published in years.' Peter Evans, Professor of Sociology, University of California, Berkeley How did the rich countries really become rich? In this provocative study, Ha-Joon Chang examines the great pressure on developing countries from the developed world to adopt certain 'good policies' and 'good institutions', seen today as necessary for economic development. Adopting an historical approach, Dr Chang finds that the economic evolution of now-developed countries differed dramatically from the procedures that they now recommend to poorer nations. His conclusions are compelling and disturbing: that developed countries are attempting to 'kick away the ladder' by which they have climbed to the top, thereby preventing developing countries from adopting policies and institutions that they themselves used. A Manager's Guide to the New World of Work - (Digital Future of Management) (Paperback)
The Value of Everything - by Mariana Mazzucato (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 384Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: EconomicsFormat: HardcoverPublisher: PublicAffairsAge Range: AdultBook theme: MacroeconomicsAuthor: Mariana MazzucatoLanguage: English About the Book Examines "the way in which economic value has been accounted and [posits that] economic theory has failed to clearly delineate the difference between value creation and value extraction. Mariana Mazzucato argues that the increasingly blurry distinction between the two categories has allowed certain actors in the economy to portray themselves as value creators, while in reality they are just moving around existing value or, even worse, destroying it"--Dust jacket flap. Book Synopsis Modern economies reward activities that extract value rather than create it. This must change to ensure a capitalism that works for us all. Shortlisted for the FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award A scathing indictment of our current global financial system, The Value of Everything rigorously scrutinizes the way in which economic value has been accounted and reveals how economic theory has failed to clearly delineate the difference between value creation and value extraction. Mariana Mazzucato argues that the increasingly blurry distinction between the two categories has allowed certain actors in the economy to portray themselves as value creators, while in reality they are just moving around existing value or, even worse, destroying it. The book uses case studies-from Silicon Valley to the financial sector to big pharma-to show how the foggy notions of value create confusion between rents and profits, reward extractors and creators, and distort the measurements of growth and GDP. In the process, innovation suffers and inequality rises. The lesson here is urgent and sobering: to rescue our economy from the next inevitable crisis and to foster long-term economic growth, we will need to rethink capitalism, rethink the role of public policy and the importance of the public sector, and redefine how we measure value in our society. Review Quotes A finalist for the FT & McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award[Mazzucato's] passionate call to empower policymakers to understand that the state's role is not secondary to the private sector is infectious.--PROSPECTA fresh look at the meaning of value to the economy...This organized and easy-to-read book will appeal to curious readers as well as those interested in economics, investing, and public policy.--BooklistA fundamental re-think of what constitutes real value in the economy.--StephenDenning, Forbes.comA stimulating analysis of the underlying causes of inequality and growth which forces us to confront long-held beliefs about how economies work and who benefits--Martin Wolf, Financial Times Mariana Mazzucato offers an exposé of how value extractors and rent-seekers have been masquerading as value creators in the global economy. And, furthermore, how the conventional wisdom has indulged them in this. --Fran Boait for ProspectMariana Mazzucato's insights into the current state of the economy, and how to think differently about it, are essential. Her new book, The Value of Everything, is outstanding.--Tim O'Reilly, author of WTF?: What's the Future and Why It's Up to UsMazzucato is fast emerging as one of the world's leading public intellectuals... [she] has offered the left a positive vision of growth based on innovation and profit-sharing, rather than sterile and counter-productive analysis based on the politics of resentment and expropriation.--SPECTATORMazzucato sides with the actual makers, those who struggle in an economy tilted in favor of the ultrawealthy... she expresses specific incredulity about the banking sector's self-serving statements about wealth creation... She is especially eloquent when commenting on arrogant tech-giant billionaires such as Peter Thiel, who claims that his wealth accumulation occurred in spite of, rather than because of, government presence.--KIRKUSREVIEWSMazzucato's mission is to overturn the now dominant neoclassical theory of value.--George Eaton for New StatesmanMazzucato's trenchant analysis is a compelling call to reinvent value as a key concept to help us achieve the world we all want.--NATURE About the Author Mariana Mazzucato is professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL), where she directs the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. Just Business - 4th Edition by Elaine Sternberg (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 326Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: Business EthicsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Phronimos PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Elaine SternbergLanguage: English About the Book The only philosophically rigorous, free-market analysis of business ethics, Just Business shows how maximizing owner value can be fully ethical. Innovative, accessible and global in scope, its powerful Ethical Decision Model can be used to resolve ethical problems of business and corporate governance in all their actual complexity and variety. Book Synopsis Just Business: Business Ethics in Action introduces conceptual clarity to business ethics, and provides systematic, jargon-free arguments for rebutting unethical demands on business. Just Business argues that business can be true to its definitive objective of maximizing long-term owner value, and still be fully ethical. Combining business realism with analytical rigor, Just Business offers an Ethical Decision Model that is globally applicable, and can be used to manage businesses' ethical problems in all their real-life complexity and variety. Even more significantly, Just Business provides a powerful explanatory framework that unifies and justifies its answers.Just Business offers detailed analyses of common concerns in business ethics and corporate governance, including 'If it's good for the business, can it really be ethical?', accountability, audits, bribery, buyouts, codes of conduct, competition, conflicts of interest, consultation, directors' responsibilities, dividends, executive pay, fairness, fiduciary responsibility, financial reporting, hiring and firing, honesty, insider trading, mixed motives, remuneration, restructuring, shareholder responsibilities, 'short-termism', takeovers, and whistle-blowing.Unlike most books on business ethics, Just Business does not apply incoherent philosophical doctrines to misunderstood business practice. Nor is it a collection of anecdotal examples or a set of ad hoc responses to isolated questions. Rather, Just Business offers a systematic, reasoned argument grounded in Aristotelian realism about what constitutes ethical conduct for business. Just Business demonstrates that when properly understood, business ethics is not an extraneous anti-business option: it is a rigorous, analytical business tool.Just Business's understanding of business derives from direct, practical experience of doing business in the 'real world'. It is intended for, and should be easily accessible to, active business stakeholders and formulators of public policy as well as academic philosophers. Now in its fourth edition, Just Business is essential reading for students of business, ethics, law, economics, and public policy, and can benefit everyone who has dealings with business, whether as employees or customers, lenders or investors, regulators or free-marketeers.Financial Times: "...a new book on business ethics that has something valuable to say is ... a rare event ... worth celebrating.... companies would be more profitable, the gross national product higher, and standards of behaviour better in a country where every manager read Just Business and took it to heart."Philosophical Quarterly: "Just Business is clear, readable and witty... it may become a standard text before long... deserves to be read by everyone with an interest in business ethics, whether teacher, student or business professional."The Independent: "Just Business is closely argued, logical and well written."Business Ethics: A European Review: "Much is gained by the book's carefully reasoned, clear approach to ethical issues."South China Morning Post: " ...very important... clear... logical... cogent... a first-class work. ...this book should be read by the officers, managers and owners of every major corporation..." Book Synopsis Beginning with the development of the compass, Ruling the Waves examines a series of technological revolutions that promised, in their time, to transform the world's politics and business. With Debora Spar's gifted storytelling, each chapter reads like an adventure tale as she recounts the histories of the printing press and maps; of the telegraph, radio, and satellite television; of software, encryption, and the advent of digital music. At each of these junctures Spar suggests that invention led to both a wave of commerce and of chaos. Entrepreneurs such as Samuel Morse and Rupert Murdoch carved new markets from the emerging technology and proclaimed that the old rules no longer applied. And for a while, they were right. But eventually--and inevitably--even cowboys need rules: rules of property, rules of coordination, rules of competition. The erstwhile pioneers thus turn to government, lobbying for order and setting the stage for the next wave of discovery. A fascinating history of business, Ruling the Waves is also an original, thought-provoking analysis of the parallels between past innovations and inventions and our own tumultuous times. Building the Future - by Amy Edmondson & Susan Salter Reynolds (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 240Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: LeadershipFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Berrett-Koehler PublishersAge Range: AdultAuthor: Amy Edmondson & Susan Salter ReynoldsLanguage: English Book Synopsis Building the Future Machiavelli famously wrote, "There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things." That's what this book is about--innovation far more audacious than a new way to find a restaurant or a smart phone you can wear on your wrist. Amy C. Edmondson and Susan Salter Reynolds explore large-scale systemic innovation that calls for "big teaming" intense collaboration between professions and industries with completely different mindsets. This demands leadership combining an expansive vision with deliberative incremental action--not an easy balance. To explore the kind of leadership required to build the future we need, Edmondson and Reynolds tell the story of Living PlanIT. This award-winning "smart city" start-up was launched with a breathtakingly ambitious goal: creating a showcase high-tech city from scratch to pilot its software--quite literally setting out to build the future. This meant a joint effort spanning a truly disparate group of software entrepreneurs, real estate developers, city government officials, architects, construction companies, and technology corporations. By taking a close look at the work, norms, and values in each of these professional domains, we gain new insight into why teaming across fields is so challenging. And we get to know Living PlanIT's leaders, following them and their partners through cycles of hope, exhaustion, disillusionment, pragmatism, and renewal. There are powerful lessons here for anyone, in any industry, seeking to drive audacious innovation. Review Quotes "Building the Future provides a rare inside look at how a start-up company takes on the world and copes with numerous challenges along the way. Go it alone or partner? Keep the bold goal or go for small wins? Seize other opportunities in technology or stick with the smart-cities plan? Edmondson and Reynolds present thought-provoking lessons for those who want to dream big and need big teaming to get the work done." --Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School, and bestselling author of Confidence and Move "This unique book by a brilliant researcher and a veteran journalist not only illuminates the problems of large-scale innovation for a sustainable future but, in the process, teaches us about industry cultures, leadership, and the massive problems of collaboration in an increasingly complex multicultural world." --Edgar Schein, Professor Emeritus, MIT Sloan School of Management, and author of Helping, Humble Inquiry, and Humble Consulting "Building the Future just may be one of the most important innovation books ever written. It explores how to build and spread a bold vision of the future--how to turn an audacious innovation into reality by bringing together people with different skills and beliefs (even if they have ignored or despised each other in the past). And best of all, Edmondson and Reynolds offer a way for tenacious leaders and teams to use small actions to slowly build big, bold innovations--including better companies, industries, and cities." --Robert Sutton, Professor of Management Science and Engineering, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and coauthor of Scaling Up Excellence "This book provides an entirely new way of looking at how teaming can--and will--help us create a new world!" --Marshall Goldsmith, Thinkers50 #1 Leadership Thinker in the World and New York Times bestselling author of What Got You Here Won't Get You There, Mojo, and Triggers "Given rush hour and all the many other failures produced by urban evolution, one has to feel that planning and engineering better cities is at the very least an effort worth attempting. This book--exhaustively researched and written with unusual clarity--constitutes a map of the impediments and possibilities. It is also a fascinating case study of technological adventure." --Tracy Kidder, author of The Soul of a New Machine, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award "City building may be the most important challenge of the 21st century, and it is a challenge that needs entrepreneurial brilliance as much as engineering. Edmondson and Reynolds provide an engaging glimpse at innovators--such as Living PlanIT and Quintain Construction--who are changing our urban world. This thoughtful book is full of managerial wisdom and urban insight. " --Edward Glaeser, Glimp Professor of Economics, Harvard University, and author of Triumph of the City "Building the Future is a remarkable book. It introduces readers to the cross-industry teaming that's needed to build the cities of tomorrow and offers an urgent reminder that technology alone can't solve global problems--cooperation, ingenuity, and empathy are needed to innovate on a grand stage. A must-read for anyone interested in the future of business or the future of the planet." --Douglas Stone, Lecturer on Law, Harvard Law School, and coauthor of Difficult Conversations and Thanks for the Feedback "Every start-up wants to change the world and disrupt an industry or two along the way. But what happens when you don't? Edmondson and Reynolds glean important lessons from the story of one such company grappling with the biggest challenge of our time: building more sustainable cities. Their inside account of setbacks and brushes with failure has more to teach us than any just-so stories of success." --Greg Lindsay, coauthor of Aerotropolis and Senior Fellow, New Cities Foundation "What we witness in this thoughtful and compelling study is one of the heroic battles that are being enacted across the globe as visionary, fleet-footed technology start-ups collide with big business and the politics of government. As the urbanization of the planet gathers pace and governments grapple with the fateful consequences, can technology support a better future for our cities? Building the Future follows a small start-up business that believes it can and examines the leadership demands of ambition on this scale." --Andrew Comer, Partner and Director of the Cities Group, BuroHappold Engineering "Get ready. What you are about to read is unlike anything you've read before on innovation, teams, the built environment, or even leadership. Edmondson and Reynolds--a world-class academic and journalist--have joined forces to explore, document, and understand how complex innovation actually unfolds and the leadership required for its success. Based on multiyear observations of an entrepreneurial effort to build a smart, green city, Building the Future brings the challenges of the future into the present so we can see what it will take to create a world that works for all of us." --Diana McLain Smith, author of The Elephant in the Room About the Author Amy C. Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School. She is the author of Teaming to Innovate, Teaming, and A Fuller Explanation, along with over seventy articles on leadership, teams, innovation, and organizational learning. Psychology, the main science for understanding people, should be a pivotal tool for solving these problems - yet most companies play it by ear, and billions of dollars are wasted on futile interventions to attract and retain the right people for key roles. Bridging the gap between the psychological science of talent and common real-world talent practices, The Talent Delusion aims to educate HR practitioners and leaders on how to measure, predict and manage talent. It will provide readers with data-driven solution to the common problems around employee selection, development and engagement; how to define and evaluate talent; how to detect and inhibit toxic employee behaviours; and how to identify and harness leadership potential. With equity crowdfunding rules finalized by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the landmark 2012 JOBS Act has finally gone live, freeing small businesses to raise up to $1 million without a lengthy, expensive IPO process. Mastering Fear - by Brandon Webb & John David Mann (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 224Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: LeadershipFormat: HardcoverPublisher: PortfolioAge Range: AdultAuthor: Brandon Webb & John David MannLanguage: English Book Synopsis From New York Times bestselling author and former Navy SEAL Brandon Webb comes a simple yet powerful five-step guide to transforming your life by making your fears work for you instead of against you. Brandon Webb has run life-threatening missions in the world's worst trouble spots, whether that meant jumping out of airplanes, taking down hostile ships on the open sea, or rolling prisoners in the dead of night in the mountains of Afghanistan. As a Navy SEAL, he learned how to manage the natural impulse to panic in the face of terrifying situations. As media CEO and national television commentator, he has learned how to apply those same skills in civilian life. Drawing on his experiences in combat and business, along with colorful anecdotes from his vast network of super-achiever friends from astronauts to billionaires, Webb shows how people from all walks of life can stretch and transcend their boundaries and learn to use their fears as fuel to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Fear can be a set of manacles, holding you prisoner, writes Webb. Or it can be a slingshot, catapulting you on to greatness. The key, says Webb, is not to fight fear or try to beat it back, but to embrace and harness it. In the process, rather than being your adversary, your fear becomes a secret weapon that allows you to triumph in even the most adverse situations. In Mastering Fear, Webb and his bestselling coauthor John David Mann break this transformation down into five practical steps, creating a must-read manual for anyone looking for greater courage and mastery in their lives. Review Quotes "A useful weapon for those fighting creative battles in the 'War of Art.'" --Steven Pressfield, author of The War of Art "The big wins and most incredible experiences come when we feel afraid but do it anyway. Read Mastering Fear, get out of your comfort zone, and dance with your fear, knowing it will lead you to new levels of performance!" --Siri Lindley, former triathlon world champion, coach, and author of Surfacing "My favorite part of this book is that Brandon doesn't teach you to conquer fear as if it will go away completely and forever. No, as a Navy Seal, he knows there's always an element of fear in the things we do. Instead, we master it, fully aware that it is coming and ready when it does. I wish someone gave me this book when I graduated from college." --Jon Acuff, author of Finish "When you've got a hockey puck flying at you at 105 miles per hour, you don't have time for theory. It's the same when life is flying at you. You need to know what to do with the gut-ripping terror that grabs at you--and you need to know it from a guy who's been there. Brandon is that dude: he's the real deal. Read, learn, and excel." --Brent Burns, all-star ice hockey defenseman for the San Jose Sharks "Brandon's book will help you conquer anything holding you back from being your best and most unafraid self. A life-changer!" --Betsy Morgan, former CEO, Huffington Post; former president, TheBlaze "Understanding fear is a crucial part of success, and I cannot imagine a more qualified person to tackle it. Brandon's inspirational style of writing leaps me into action chapter by chapter. Thank you for such a practical breakdown of this important human condition." --Sally Lyndley, editor, Love magazine Not only will this book provide you with a brilliantly simple plan for conquering your deepest fears, but it will also leave you with a burning desire to do it. What previously seemed impossible will suddenly appear entirely tangible. --Marina Khoroch, writer for Vogue.com About the Author Brandon Webb is a former US Navy SEAL, New York Times bestselling author, and founder and CEO of Hurricane Group, a media and ecommerce business focused on military entertainment, news, and monthly clubs. Made in China - by Amelia Pang (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 288Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: GlobalizationFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Algonquin BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Amelia PangLanguage: English About the Book "After an Oregon mother finds an SOS letter in a box of Halloween decorations, a story unfolds about the man who wrote it: a Chinese political prisoner, sentenced without trial to work grueling hours at a 'reeducation' camp--manufacturing the products sold in our own big-box stores"-- Book Synopsis A Most-Anticipated Book of the Year: Newsweek * Refinery29 "Timely and urgent . . . Pang is a dogged investigator." --The New York Times Book Review "Moving and powerful." --Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Discover the truth behind the discounts In 2012, an Oregon mother named Julie Keith opened up a package of Halloween decorations. The cheap foam headstones had been five dollars at Kmart, too good a deal to pass up. But when she opened the box, something shocking fell out: an SOS letter, handwritten in broken English. "Sir: If you occassionally buy this product, please kindly resend this letter to the World Human Right Organization. Thousands people here who are under the persicuton of the Chinese Communist Party Government will thank and remember you forever." The note's author, Sun Yi, was a mild-mannered Chinese engineer turned political prisoner, forced into grueling labor for campaigning for the freedom to join a forbidden meditation movement. He was imprisoned alongside petty criminals, civil rights activists, and tens of thousands of others the Chinese government had decided to "reeducate," carving foam gravestones and stitching clothing for more than fifteen hours a day. In Made in China, investigative journalist Amelia Pang pulls back the curtain on Sun's story and the stories of others like him, including the persecuted Uyghur minority group whose abuse and exploitation is rapidly gathering steam. What she reveals is a closely guarded network of laogai--forced labor camps--that power the rapid pace of American consumerism. Through extensive interviews and firsthand reportage, Pang shows us the true cost of America's cheap goods and shares what is ultimately a call to action--urging us to ask more questions and demand more answers from the companies we patronize. Review Quotes "A moving and powerful look at the brutal slave labor camps in China that mass produce our consumer products. Amelia Pang, who puts a human face on the Chinese laborers who work in bondage, makes clear our complicity in this inhuman system. She forces us, like the abolitionists who battled slavery in the 19th century, to place the sanctity of human life before the maximization of profit. It is hard not to finish this book and not be outraged, not only at the Chinese government but the American corporations that knowingly collaborate with and profit from this modern slave trade." --Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author "Amelia Pang has written a powerful new book that traces what we buy back to those who made it, often under truly torturous conditions." --Scott Simon, host of NPR / Weekend Edition Saturday "Amelia Pang exposes the shadow economy of forced labor in Made in China. Pang adroitly situates readers to Chinese culture and society... [and] sounds an uplifting note of agency and empowerment about the prospective impact of reforming Western consumption." --San Francisco Chronicle "The result of Pang's investigation is this powerful, illuminating book, which serves as a reminder that not only is nothing in life actually free, but it should also never be inexplicably cheap--someone, somewhere, is always paying the price." --Refinery29 "Journalist Pang debuts with a vivid and powerful report on Chinese forced labor camps and their connections to the American marketplace. Cinematic . . . Engrossing and deeply reported, this impressive exposé will make readers think twice about their next purchase." --Publishers Weekly, starred review "With clarity and sensitivity, [Pang] exposes the human cost of the global demand for cut-rate products, and provides clear calls to action for individuals, corporations and governments to stem these abuses. Any reader with half a heart will be hard-pressed not to re-examine their own buying habits after reading this incredible, moving account." --Shelf Awareness "A powerful call to action and advice for conscientious consumption . . . Spanning biography, business, and sociology, this well-reported and well-researched account of labor practices shows the impact of the demand for global goods." --Library Journal "A powerful argument for heightened awareness of the high price of Chinese-made products." --Kirkus Reviews "Readers will be drawn into this thoroughly researched narrative and will be awakened by the author's pleas for consumers to be more vigilant about the origin of their goods." --Booklist "The book is an excellent entry-level explanation of Chinese religious and political history, and how human rights abuses intersect with billion-dollar businesses. Pang connects the dots between globalization, Western consumption, and sustainability to create a clear, cohesive picture of the problem, as well as of potential solutions." --BookPage "A cinematic approach to a vital topic, which should be as close to our hearts as cheap goods are to our wallets. Amelia Pang provides close-ups of the individual stories behind labor camps, and wide-angle views of their context and history." --Alec Ash, author of Wish Lanterns: Young Lives in New China"Sun's story shows the inhuman nature of the authoritarian Chinese government. The narrative consists of many people's untold stories. After reading this book, anyone with a conscience will realize it is time to take action for those who are persecuted by the Chinese dictatorship." --Chen Guangcheng, author of The Barefoot Lawyer: A Blind Man's Fight for Justice and Freedom in China "The problem of illegal prison labor being used in the People's Republic of China to manufacture goods for global markets is a longstanding one that keeps resurfacing in new guises. Now with this well-researched and reported book that reads like a detective story, investigative journalist Amelia Pang has opened a new porthole on this pernicious practice." --Orville Schell, Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society

Networking Kills - by Mark H Maxwell (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 242Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: Personal SuccessFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Desolation Row PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Mark H MaxwellLanguage: English About the Book The key to finding success isn't about who you know, but how you serve. This is how you can truly change the world - one person at a time. Book Synopsis College freshmen are lectured about networking on their first day of class. Young professionals race to another boring party so they can be seen and shake hands with someone who might be able to help them-just like the business books and podcasts have instructed. Creatives are chronically obsessed with and depressed by the number of likes, views and followers on their social media. Anyone embarking upon a new path or business venture has heard the key to success lies in networking-who you know, and how they can get you ahead. But, according to Mark H. Maxwell, this is not only untrue, but potentially dangerous to those hoping to succeed.Networking Kills lays out what the Bible and Jesus say about true success. Weaving scripture with Maxwell's own stories from his professional career and pop culture illustrations (John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Kim Kardashian, Johnny Cash), Networking Kills examines the need for cultural change concerning our pursuit and definition of "success" in every area of life, and shows how serving is actually the key."Christ taught, 'If you want to be great, you must become a servant, '" Maxwell says. "And, Martin Luther King, Jr., made it clear, 'Anybody can be great, because anybody can serve.' Even music business super-manager, Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber) says, 'Don't live for yourself...Live for others...that is where you will find true riches in life.' The heart of networking is rooted in selfishness, taking and using, while the great leaders teach us that true success comes through giving, loving others and serving generously."In Networking Kills, Maxwell shows how: Networking kills creativity Networking kills authentic relationships Networking kills life Networking kills love He then lays out the amazing benefits that can come from living a life that is focused on service: Serving erases fear of failure Serving erases conflict Serving creates purpose Serving creates value Serving creates provision Serving changes the world Networking Kills proves that to experience true success and fulfillment, and in an effort to obey God, this lens of serving must become the basis for all of our daily decision-making and our major life assignments. Serving attracts us to and is attractive to others; when people can sense you genuinely care, walls come down and true relationships form. And that is more powerful than any business card exchange, forced cocktail hour conversation or Instagram follow. That is how you can truly change the world-one person at a time. Review Quotes "I knew I wanted to get my hands on Mark Maxwell's book, Networking Kills, when one of his Belmont students quoted it in a conversation we were having over a cup of coffee. What a simple concept: "Networking" narrows our focus and our life experience. "Serving" connects us in a meaningful way and throws the gates of opportunity wide open. Let the adventure begin!" AMY GRANT - Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter "I have had the privilege of knowing and working with Mark Maxwell for some time now. In an industry and culture that encourages us to be more and more self-focused for our own personal gain, Mark's book is a fresh and necessary perspective that is desperately needed. It is natural for us to think that our gifts and talents are for us. Mark does a great job of leading us through his book and turning this paradigm upside down. No matter where we are on the journey we need to constantly be reminded that we are called to serve not be served." TOBYMAC - Grammy award-winning recording artist "Culture teaches us to measure everything through the question: "how does this benefit my life?" This book does the exact opposite by changing the question to, "how does my life benefit others?" Gerber, Author, The E-Myth I've read well over 1,000 business books and 80/20 Sales and Marketing is among the top 10 for actionable strategies to fast impact your bottom line. Every business person should own a copy - highlighted, dog-eared and underlined. -Bill Harrison, CEO, Bradley Communications Corp. Best business book I've read this year. Focusing only on the 20% of the 20% that really matters using the power curve and reverse thinking has made my business extremely profitable. Once you understand how to disqualify, work less and make more, life flows naturally. Powerful, little-known concepts are clearly articulated with terrific real world examples and concise summaries. -James Schramko, Founder, SuperFast Business If you don't know who Perry Marshall is -- unforgivable.-Dan Kennedy, Author, The Ultimate Marketing Plan Review Quotes Perry Marshall is a sales and marketing ninja. Read this book, apply the lessons, and slice your way to victory. -Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling Author, The $100 Startup Perry Marshall is the Gene Schwartz of the 21st century. Schwartz's book, Breakthrough Advertising, is every bit as current as the first day it rolled off the press in 1966. Perry's work is like that. Perry has consulted with the best marketers on the planet for over a decade. He combines the attributes of the most calculated engineer with the artistry of a poet. He delivers the deepest dive into the "80/20 Principle" you've ever taken, as it applies to copywriting, buying traffic, scaling traffic, dominating markets, and sales conversion. 80/20 is not a rule of thumb; it's a law of nature and a way of life. If you are not following Perry's formula, you are leaving millions on the table. -Brian Kurtz, Executive Vice President, Boardroom Inc. Perry has been THE go-to wizard for using Google Adwords as the mega-valuable tool for entrepreneurs it was meant to be, and I recommend his materials without hesitation. Without his insights and advice on pay-per-click, I can't even imagine where many successful online business owners (in literally hundreds of industries) would be right now. Deservedly, Perry's now stepped into the mainstream and is no longer the best-kept secret of niche entrepreneurs. The unique tools in this book are game-changers for anyone looking to take their business to the next level. -John Carlton, Legendary Copywriter and President, Marketing Rebel Inc. Perry Marshall's teaching on 80/20 was so riveting I cancelled my appointments for the afternoon and read the entire manuscript. It is a gold mine in insight and depth. I am still processing it! -Lance Wallnau, President, Lance Learning Group Very often, the most powerful ideas in the world are laying around in plain sight unappreciated, poorly understood, and unused. One such idea was Google's AdWords system. It may be hard to believe now, but for many long months after it was released, this ingenious new approach to advertising --which now amounts to about about 90% of Google's prodigious income --was dismissed by the pay-per-click advertising experts of the time. The Pareto Principle is another idea that contains incredible, but largely untapped power. Many have heard of it, usually as the 80/20 Rule, but until recent years it was one of those 'so what?' factoids that most people fail to appreciate let alone do anything with. Amazingly, the same guy who first sorted out how to use Google AdWord's profitably, is the very same guy who has breathed fresh life into this most productive of mathematical insights. If you are a marketer or business owner, or anyone who wants to be more successful in this world, wrapping your head about the 80/20 Rule as it is explained by Perry Marshall will be the single most effective thing you can do all year, any year. -Ken McCarthy, CEO, Amacord, and Founder, The System Seminar for Internet Marketing Every once in a while, a book arrives that seems to speak the right message at the perfect time. 80/20 Sales and Marketing is one of those books, and one that will prove to be a milestone in the marketing canon. I hadn't finished the first few pages before I knew beyond doubt that I was reading something that would be extremely significant for my business, and my life. I barely blinked before I was halfway through! Perry Marshall has delivered a work of simple genius. He reveals a pattern that is so woven into natural law that, when you open your eyes to it, you'll see it all around you. Leaving no stone unturned, he then takes you by the hand through a complete business master class, covering marketing, personal effectiveness, time management, advertising, cash flow, hiring, firing, loving the work you do, and making a real difference. I can safely guarantee that 20% of this book will take your success to the next level, and within that just a few gems will skyrocket you to another place completely. -Ben Hunt, Author, Convert!: Designing Web Sites to Increase Traffic and Conversion Perry's 80/20 course was of those pesky life-changing experiences. Now I'm heading off to go do it.-Randall Ingermanson, Author, Writing Fiction for Dummies You will be stunned how scary accurate the Marketing DNA Test is. - Brad Richdale, Legendary Writer, Director, Producer, and Direct Marketer We have started using the DNA test on all candidates we interview, and it seems to be remarkably accurate and insightful. I say this with some qualification, having taken assessments by DIVINE and a DISC profile not too long ago. MarketingDNA stands with the big boys!-Hans Riemer, President, Market Vantage, LLC When I was a kid, my favorite board game was Chutes and Ladders. I loved it when I landed at the foot of a ladder and could take a short cut to victory. Reading 80/20 Sales and Marketing gives me the same feeling. Though Perry and the rest of us look at the same world, he sees the hidden order of things--the ladders to success that almost nobody recognizes. He's taken the 80/20 Principle farther than it's ever been taken before, and shares tools so powerful that I challenge anyone to implement these insights and not quintuple their business within two years. -Howard Jacobson, Author, Google AdWords for Dummies There are a lot of smart marketing gurus out there. At one time or another, I've been on most of their email lists and spent five figures on their products. But, if I had to choose just one to listen to, it'd be Perry. If you only pay attention to Perry Marshall when it comes to AdWords, you are missing the boat. From copywriting to conversions to email auto responders and much more, Perry has proven himself to be one of the most astute direct marketers and business strategists, online or offline, around today. -Adam Kreitman, Words That Click, CrazyEgg.com The fact that I have my own TV show in Poland is directly connected with Perry Marshall's 80/20 Productivity Express. -Gregory Mogilevsky, TV Host, Biznes w Sieci (Business in the Net) on TVN CNBC in Poland, Warszawa, Poland I took Perry's 80/20 course last year and had the most productive year of my life. No exaggeration. -Michael Arnold, President, The Natural Fertility Experts Ltd, London, UK As of today for 2013, my client base is down 23%; revenue is up 43%. It's like I was in second gear for a year, and now I'm in fourth. More speed, less RPM. -Adam Libman, Libman Tax Strategy I bought the Perry Marshall marketing system quite a few years back, his book, Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords, white papers course, and a few other very useful courses and seminars and implemented them. I went from working all the time and killing myself to all of a sudden making more money, starting a second and third business and having a huge amount of time off when I wanted to! I still do a lot of work, but on my terms now. -Jade Sullivan, Access Trading I'm a productivity junkie, and I've done just about every book, training, or system, from Stephen Covey to David Allen. Perry's course has been some of the best teaching on this subject I've ever experienced. In the first session, I reclaimed an extra hour per day; by the third session, I totally revolutionized how I run my business. I was too busy to take it. Ha ha--I took it anyway. Cut my average workweek by about 20 hours and more than doubled, almost tripled, my income. Brought on two major, six-figure clients. Have two more knocking at my door right now. Literally booked solid. Fully on track to clear $1 million in revenue for this year. Made room for me to become a major contributor in my church, but not the way you think. Yes, we give money, but what I'm speaking about is the fact that I've been free to lead financial peace classes and be available in other ways, for my church. Stopped doing things that I was good at, but that were not the highest use of my time-- a major leverage point. -Ray Edwards, Founder & CEO, Ray Edwards International, Inc. About the Author Perry Marshall the number-one author and world's most-quoted consultant on Google advertising. He has helped over 100,000 advertisers save literally billions of dollars in "AdWords stupidity tax." His Chicago company, Perry S. Marshall & Associates, consults both online and brick-and-mortar companies on generating sales leads, web traffic, and maximizing advertising results. He's been featured at conferences in the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Great Britain, Israel and Australia. Whether they are facing adversity (like workplace inequity or a global pandemic) or organizing to make the world a better place, women are a highly potent resource for one another."-- Book Synopsis CNN news anchor Brooke Baldwin explores the phenomenon of "huddling," when women lean on one another--in politics, Hollywood, activism, the arts, sports, and everyday friendships--to provide each other support, empowerment, inspiration, and the strength to solve problems or enact meaningful change. Whether they are facing adversity (like workplace inequity or a global pandemic) or organizing to make the world a better place, women are a highly potent resource for one another. Through a mix of journalism and personal narrative, Baldwin takes readers beyond the big headline-making huddles from recent years (such as the Women's March, #MeToo, Times Up, and the record number of women running for public office) and embeds herself in groups of women of all ages, races, religions and socio-economic backgrounds who are banding together in America. HUDDLE explores several stories including: The benefits of all-girls learning environments, such as Karlie Kloss's Kode with Klossy and Reese Witherspoon's Filmmaker Lab for Girls in which young women are given the freedom to make mistakes, and find their confidence. The tactics employed by huddles of women who work in male-dominated industries including a group of US veterans/Democratic Congresswomen, a huddle of African-American judges in Harris County, Texas, and an all-female writers room in Hollywood. The wisdom of huddling from trusted pioneers such as Gloria Steinem, Billie Jean King, and Madeleine Albright as well as contemporary trailblazers like Stacey Abrams and Ava DuVernay. How professionals such as Chef Dominique Crenn and sports agent Lindsay Colas use their success to amplify other women in their fields. The ways huddles of women are dedicated to making seismic change, including a look at Indigenous women saving the planet, the women who founded Black Lives Matter, the mothers fighting for sensible gun laws, America's favorite female athletes (Megan Rapinoe, Hilary Knight, and Sue Bird to name a few) agitating for equal pay, and female teachers rallying to improve their working conditions. The bond between women who practice self-care and trauma healing together, including the women who courageously survived sexual abuse, and the women who heal together in The Class and GirlTrek. The ways women are becoming more intentional about the life-saving power of friendship, including the bonds between military wives, new moms, and nurses getting through the time of Covid.Throughout her examination of this fascinating huddle phenomenon, Baldwin learns about the periods of huddle 'droughts" in America, as well as the ways that Black women have been huddling for centuries. She also uncovers how huddling can be the "secret sauce" that makes many things possible for women: success in the workplace, effective grassroots change, confidence in girlhood, and a better physical and mental health profile in adulthood. Along the way, Baldwin takes readers through her own personal journey of growing up in the South and climbing the ladder of a male-dominated industry. Like so many women in her field, she encountered many sharp elbows on her career path, but became an early believer in adding more seats to the table and huddling with other women for strength and solidarity. In the process of writing HUDDLE, Baldwin learns that this seemingly new phenomenon is actually something women have been doing for generations--a quiet, collective power she learns to unlock in her transformation from journalist to champion for women. Review Quotes Brooke Baldwin has always been a fierce promoter of women. Her first book, Huddle, is an exemplification of what happens when women have one another's backs. If you want to understand the power that can be achieved when women come together to support one another, this is your book. If you want to be inspired by the ambition and tenacity of women, this is your book. If you want to experience the infectious enthusiasm of a woman delighting in her efforts to tell these remarkable stories, this is definitely your book.--Lisa Ling, executive producer and host of CNN's This Is Life with Lisa Ling I have spent much of my life in a huddle on the soccer field, planning a winning strategy with other badass women. I know firsthand that Brooke Baldwin is right: magic happens after the huddle. I just finished Huddle, and I'm on fire. Brooke is the coach we need in precisely this moment. She reminds us that if we take the power of the huddle off the field and into the world, we will be unstoppable!--Abby Wambach, Olympian, activist, and #1 bestselling author of Wolfpack I wouldn't be anywhere close to where I am today if not for my beautiful, powerful, badass huddle. And if you want to know why it's the most important thing in life--that's right, I said in life--do yourself and your huddle a favor and pick up this book.--Bozoma Saint John, CMO of Netflix, entrepreneur, and badass It's a man's world, but not for long if we tap into the power of Huddle. Women can be our own worst enemies or our greatest resource; Brooke has inspired me to keep fighting for women to shatter ceilings and set the menu at any table at which we find ourselves. What I love most about this book is that it reminds us that solidarity can indeed be contagious--and collaboration, especially among those who have been left out and left behind, can be transformative.--Alicia Garza, principal of the Black Futures Lab and cofounder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network Like Brooke herself, Huddle uplifts women, encouraging them to believe in their collective power. A fun and inspiring read!--Diane Von Furstenberg, fashion designer, philanthropist, and bestselling author

The real transformation--and the real opportunity--is just beginning"-- Book Synopsis A USA Today bestseller! Companies like Netflix, Spotify, and Salesforce are just the tip of the iceberg for the subscription model. The real transformation--and the real opportunity--is just beginning. Subscription companies are growing nine times faster than the S & P 500. Why? Because unlike product companies, subscription companies know their customers. A happy subscriber base is the ultimate economic moat. Today's consumers prefer the advantages of access over the hassles of maintenance, from transportation (Uber, Surf Air), to clothing (Stitch Fix, Eleven James), to razor blades and makeup (Dollar Shave Club, Birchbox). Companies are similarly demanding easier, long-term solutions, trading their server rooms for cloud storage solutions like Box. Simply put, the world is shifting from products to services. But how do you turn customers into subscribers? As the CEO of the world's largest subscription management platform, Tien Tzuo has helped hundreds of companies transition from relying on individual sales to building customer-centric, recurring-revenue businesses. His core message in Subscribed is simple: Ready or not, excited or terrified, you need to adapt to the Subscription Economy -- or risk being left behind. Tzuo shows how to use subscriptions to build lucrative, ongoing one-on-one relationships with your customers. This may require reinventing substantial parts of your company, from your accounting practices to your entire IT architecture, but the payoff can be enormous. Just look at the case studies: * Adobe transitions from selling enterprise software licenses to offering cloud-based solutions for a flat monthly fee, and quadruples its valuation. * Fender evolves from selling guitars one at a time to creating lifelong musicians by teaching beginners to play, and keeping them inspired for life. * Caterpillar uses subscriptions to help solve problems -- it's not about how many tractors you can rent, but how much dirt you need to move. In Subscribed, you'll learn how these companies made the shift, and how you can transform your own product into a valuable service with a practical, step-by-step framework. Find out how how you can prepare and prosper now, rather than trying to catch up later. About the Author Tien Tzuo is the CEO and cofounder of Zuora, the leading subscription SaaS provider, with more than 1,000 customers worldwide. Zuora, which is foundational to companies in the growing Subscription Economy, was born out of Tzuo's experiences at Salesforce, a pioneer of the subscription model, where he was formerly CMO and Chief Strategy Officer. Headquartered in Silicon Valley, Zuora also operates offices in Atlanta, Boston, Denver, San Francisco, London, Paris, Beijing, Sydney and Tokyo.Gabe Weisert is the managing editor of Zuora's Subscribed magazine. He has previous written for Yahoo!, Forbes.com, and Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report.

Among the most successful leaders throughout history-from Abe Lincoln to Rosa Parks, Mahatma Gandhi to Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King, Jr. to Nelson Mandela-some were brilliant mathematicians and economists, others were creative visionaries, still others were masterful at strategic planning. Their mastery of their field wasn't the secret to their highly effective leadership. All of their skill, grit, resilience, charisma, and courage emanated from one thing: their strength of character. Character-the moral values and habits of an individual-is in the spotlight now more than perhaps at any other point in modern history. Politicians distort facts. Corporations cheat customers and investors. Athletes are caught using illegal supplements. In addition to harming our culture at large, these failures of character have a profound and undermining impact on leadership. The authors of this book are experts on the value of character, its correlation with successful leadership, and how to build it in individuals and prospective leaders. General Robert L. Caslen, Jr. served the US Army for over 43 years and served as Superintendent at the US Military Academy at West Point. Psychologist Dr. Michael D. Matthews is a Professor of Engineering Psychology at West Point who has focused on the psychology of character for years. Together they witnessed firsthand that raw talent is not enough to stand on its own; successful leadership relies on the critical foundation of a strong character. In The Character Edge they leverage their perspectives to offer an empowering, story-driven argument-backed by the latest scientific research-that character is vital to success. They give readers the tools to build and sustain character in themselves and their organizations by testing readers' strengths of the gut, head and heart and teaching how to build trust and nurture the seeds of character"-- Book Synopsis The former superintendent at West Point and a psychologist explain why all successful leaders rely on a foundation of strong character. Anthony, Martin Luther King, Jr. to Nelson Mandela--some were brilliant mathematicians and economists, others were creative visionaries, still others were masterful at strategic planning. Their mastery of their field wasn't the secret to their highly effective leadership. All of their skill, grit, resilience, charisma, and courage emanated from one thing: their strength of character. Character--the moral values and habits of an individual--is in the spotlight now more than perhaps at any other point in modern history. In The Character Edge they leverage their perspectives to offer an empowering, story-driven argument--backed by the latest scientific research--that character is vital to success. They give readers the tools to build and sustain character in themselves and their organizations by testing readers' strengths of the gut, head and heart and teaching how to build trust and nurture the seeds of character. Review Quotes The Character Edge is a unique and valuable book because it combines the battle-tested leadership lessons of General Caslen with the perspective of Professor Matthews, a senior behavioral scientist. McRaven, US Navy (Retired), former Chancellor of the University of Texas and bestselling author of Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations "General Bob Caslen and Dr. Mike Matthews have done a great job illustrating why character and excellence are the most important elements in effective leadership. I have always believed that character and excellence go hand in hand, and this has always been the formula for our teams that win. Bob and Mike are proven leaders of character, and their examples and principles are what I have used my entire career." --Mike Krzyzewski, head men's basketball coach at Duke University "General Caslen and Michael Matthews are absolutely the right people to write this book. Together, they form a Genius of AND -- the art of leadership AND the science of character, the crucible of hard experience AND the rigor of academic research, the searing lessons of decisive action AND the enduring insights of wise reflection. Few great leaders have charismatic personality, but all have character that inspires. Caslen and Matthews show how and why this fundamental inner architecture of leadership can -- and must -- be built." --Jim Collins, author Good to Great, co-author Built to Last "The Character Edge artfully combines scholarly research and practical experience in an interesting, persuasive way. I think character matters more today than at any time in my memory. Bob Caslen and Michael Matthews get it right." --General Martin E. Dempsey, US Army (Retired), 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, author of Radical Inclusion: What the Post-9/11 World Should Have Taught Us About Leadership "The world needs leaders with strong character more than ever, and The Character Edge will show you how that is done in two institutions that carry the trust and respect of all Americans -- the United States Military Academy at West Point, and the United States Army. Caslen terms the "Bank of Public Trust." Caslen and Matthews give compelling illustrations of how trust accounts must be cherished and nurtured overtime and modeled consistently with "deposits of competence, character and caring." As educators and public servants there is much we can draw from the stories, the exquisite scholarship and the "right way" lessons found throughout The Character Edge." --Mary M. Keller, Ed.D., Former President & CEO, The Military Child Education Coalition "In The Character Edge, Caslen and Matthews offer the definitive guide to how individuals and organizations may build and utilize positive character to flourish and win. Corporations who 'get' this message excel, those that do not will fail in the long run." --Indra Nooyi, Former Chairman & CEO, PepsiCo "Blending behavioral science with lessons learned in the crucible of military service, Bob Caslen and Mike Matthews have written a leadership book that is both timely and timeless. They examine the complex nature of character in both individuals and organizations with vivid examples from the military, sports, education and business. In a time of polarization and incivility, the authors have created a how-to manual for counteracting these destructive forces in ourselves and our institutions." --Stefanie Sanford, Chief of Global Policy & External Relations, The College Board About the Author Lieutenant General Robert L. Kickback - by David Montero (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 304Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: Government & BusinessFormat: HardcoverPublisher: VikingAge Range: AdultAuthor: David MonteroLanguage: English About the Book "An investigation into corporate bribery around the world and how it undermines democracy and the free market system"-- Book Synopsis An investigation into corporate bribery around the world and how it undermines democracy and the free market system The World Bank estimates that rich multinational corporations pay hundreds of billions of dollars in bribes every year to officials overseas. The perpetrators are not a handful of rogue companies, but many members of the Fortune 500. Kickback is a sweeping, global investigation into corporate bribery around the world and how backdoor financial transactions undermine democracy and the free market system by lining the pockets of some of the world's worst dictators and criminals. Ultimately, this system affects billions of people by creating conditions that lead to poverty, violence, environmental disaster, and political instability in countries like Nigeria, Bahrain, Costa Rica, and Iraq. Kickback traces the origins of corporate bribery from the reign of the British East India Company to the methods by which it is carried out today. Traveling across four continents and interviewing police and intelligence officials, convicted criminals, business executives, and corruption experts, David Montero takes an inside look at bribery's pernicious effects. He examines its ramifications at both the individual and national levels--from the murder of a young activist in Bangladesh to a Texas billionaire's dealings with Saddam Hussein, from pharmaceutical firms' payoffs in China to how the entrenched culture of bribery helped destroy the Greek economy. Montero also examines the countermeasures that have been introduced to combat these practices, such as the Justice Department's efforts to halt them and attempts to identify and provide restitution to victims. Given the new era of profound uncertainty we are entering--the strength of the European Union founders, the power of China rises, the global economy continues on a path of perilous flux, and allegations mount that President Donald Trump and his associates are possibly tainted by bribery themselves--the stakes for eradicating corporate bribery have never been higher. Review Quotes Kickbacks, [Montero] demonstrates, are the 'cost of doing business.' But by the end of his book, one is left with the impression that the cost, whatever it might be, is far too high.--Bloomberg Investigative journalist Montero explores the impact of corporate bribery in this insightful and clearly written exposé . . . Montero's far-reaching study will likely shock even readers familiar with the issue.--Publishers Weekly "[Montero] is at his most compelling when connecting . . . sordid backroom dealers with some of the world's most recognizable brand names and the international conflicts that they helped foster. . . . A startling window into the bribery that shapes the world in which we live, including the major corporate players and government parties involved in the corruption." --Kirkus ReviewsRead Kickback! It's unique, revelatory and concise. It actually shows you how bribes work and who pays the price. --Lowell Bergman, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and David and Reva Logan Distinguished Chair in Investigative Reporting at UC Berkeley Kickback has everything: assassination plots, drug dealers, secret agents, prostitutes, and dirty sheiks, princes, governors, and presidents. But this crime thriller is a deeply reported book about the malfeasance of global companies with household names. David Montero skillfully pulls back the curtain on one of the best-kept secrets of corporate life: the corrosive and all-too-common business of bribery.--David France, Oscar-nominated director of How to Survive a Plague About the Author David Montero has documented the impact of corruption in South and South East Asia. Formerly a correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor and a regular producer for PBS's flagship investigative series, FRONTLINE, his work has twice been honored with an Emmy Award nomination as well as the South Asian Journalist Association's Daniel Pearl Award. Montero has also written for The New York Times, The Nation, Le Monde Diplomatique, and many others.

Like She Owns the Place - by Cara Alwill Leyba (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 224Genre: Business + Money ManagementSub-Genre: MotivationalFormat: HardcoverPublisher: PortfolioAge Range: AdultAuthor: Cara Alwill LeybaLanguage: English About the Book "Cara Alwill Leyba's ... voice and kinship with her audience drove the self-published success of Girl Code, a book that encouraged women to support each other in the business community. Now her many fans are ready to take the next step: building sustainable confidence from the ground up. Most women who are insecure look for the equivalent of a sugar rush, such as telling themselves they're better than other people or changing the way they look. But those tricks won't protect them from losing confidence in the future. Neither will simply being outspoken and aggressive, if those traits aren't authentic"-- Book Synopsis Can you imagine what life would be like if you could accept failure, cellulite, wrinkles, imperfection, screw-ups, and vulnerability? I'll tell you what would happen: you would finally take that weight off your shoulders and build unshakeable, sustainable confidence. The truth is that confidence isn't about living up to anyone's expectations--it's about affirming, every day, that you're an effing boss. It's not the result of being skinny, making a six figure salary, finding your dream partner, or drinking a green juice every day. It requires patience, dedication, forgiveness, bravery, and an incredible amount of self-compassion. You've probably read that "confidence is a choice," and while that's true, it's more accurate to say that confidence is a series of repeated choices to accept yourself. To choose pride over insecurity. And to fearlessly show up in the world as the truest expression of yourself. It took me a long time to overcome all the BS. It took me a longer time to develop a rock-solid sense of inner-peace and become intimate with my intuition. To achieve real confidence that lasted longer than a sugar rush. My goal with this book is to share with you how I have arrived here, how I've helped my clients arrive here, and hopefully save you years of pain, shame, and uncertainty. Because, girl, I know how rocky this road can be. I'm going to show you how to block out all the noise around you, and how to free yourself from the opinions and judgment of others. I'm going to teach you how to trust your gut, reclaim your life, and rock what you've got. I'm going to show you how to own the place. Review Quotes Urgent, powerful, and generous, this book gives you a chance to pick yourself. Cara spares us empty reassurance and offers something much more valuable: useful truth, and a plan for finding the confidence you deserve.--Seth Godin, author of Linchpin "Cara's latest book is a gift to women everywhere. Her stories of what it looked and felt like to step into her authentic truth had me literally feeling more confident the very next day.
