The Genealogy of Morals - by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 138Genre: ReferenceSub-Genre: Genealogy & HeraldryFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Bibliotech PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Friedrich Wilhelm NietzscheLanguage: English Book Synopsis Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (15 October 1844 - 25 August 1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, composer, poet, philologist, and Latin and Greek scholar whose work has exerted a profound influence on modern intellectual history. He began his career as a classical philologist before turning to philosophy. He became the youngest ever to hold the Chair of Classical Philology at the University of Basel in 1869 at the age of 24. Nietzsche resigned in 1879 due to health problems that plagued him most of his life; he completed much of his core writing in the following decade. In 1889, at age 44, he suffered a collapse and afterward a complete loss of his mental faculties. He lived his remaining years in the care of his mother until her death in 1897 and then with his sister Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche. Nietzsche died in 1900.Nietzsche's writing spans philosophical polemics, poetry, cultural criticism, and fiction while displaying a fondness for aphorism and irony. Prominent elements of his philosophy include his radical critique of truth in favor of perspectivism; his genealogical critique of religion and Christian morality and his related theory of master-slave morality; his aesthetic affirmation of existence in response to the "death of God" and the profound crisis of nihilism; his notion of the Apollonian and Dionysian; and his characterization of the human subject as the expression of competing wills, collectively understood as the will to power. He also developed influential concepts such as the Übermensch and the doctrine of eternal return. In his later work, he became increasingly preoccupied with the creative powers of the individual to overcome social, cultural and moral contexts in pursuit of new values and aesthetic health. His body of work touched a wide range of topics, including art, philology, history, religion, tragedy, culture, and science, and drew early inspiration from figures such as philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, composer Richard Wagner, and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. After his death, his sister Elisabeth became the curator and editor of Nietzsche's manuscripts, reworking his unpublished writings to fit her own German nationalist ideology while often contradicting or obfuscating Nietzsche's stated opinions, which were explicitly opposed to antisemitism and nationalism. Through her published editions, Nietzsche's work became associated with fascism and Nazism; 20th century scholars contested this interpretation of his work and corrected editions of his writings were soon made available. Nietzsche's thought enjoyed renewed popularity in the 1960s and his ideas have since had a profound impact on 20th and early-21st century thinkers across philosophy--especially in schools of continental philosophy such as existentialism, postmodernism and post-structuralism--as well as art, literature, psychology, politics and popular culture. The Melting Pot - (Mint Editions) by Israel Zangwill (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 110Genre: ReferenceSub-Genre: GeneralSeries Title: Mint EditionsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Mint EditionsAge Range: AdultAuthor: Israel ZangwillLanguage: English Book Synopsis The Melting Pot (1908) is a play by Israel Zangwill. Raised in London by parents from Latvia and Poland, Zangwill understood the plight of the city's Jewish community firsthand. Having risen through poverty to become an educator and author, he dedicated his career to the voiceless, the oppressed, and the needy, advocating for their rights and bearing witness to their suffering in some of the most powerful novels and stories of the Victorian era. When it was staged in Washington, DC, The Melting Pot received praise from President Theodore Roosevelt, who proclaimed from the audience "That's a great play, Mr. Zangwill!" During the 1903 Chișinău pogrom, David Quixano lost his entire family to antisemitic violence. Unable to remain in Russia, he emigrates to the United States, where he hopes to be accepted not just into the nation's growing Jewish community, but into its open democratic society. When he arrives, he composes a successful symphony called "The Crucible," written in tribute to the melting pot of American culture, its promise to rise above ethnic divisions. He soon meets a fellow immigrant named Vera, who hails from a Christian family in Russia. As he begins to fulfill his own American Dream, a shocking revelation forces David to question his unwavering idealism. The Melting Pot ran for over one hundred performances in New York City, starring some of the leading actors of its time and galvanizing the image of the immigrant experience in America for generations to come. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Israel Zangwill's The Melting Pot is a classic of British literature reimagined for modern readers. From the Back Cover Having lost his mother and sister to a pogrom in Russia, David Quixano emigrates to America in hopes of a life of freedom. Renewed in his belief in humanity, he writes a symphony praising the democratic ideals of his new nation and falls in love with a fellow immigrant. The Melting Pot is a play by Israel Zangwill.

A Concise Dictionary of Cornish Place-Names - by Craig Weatherhill (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 112Genre: ReferenceSub-Genre: Atlases, Gazetteers & MapsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: EvertypeAge Range: AdultAuthor: Craig WeatherhillLanguage: Cornish About the Book This dictionary offers in a concise format more than 3,300 place-names. The recommendations preserve the authentic and attested linguistic forms while at the same time honoring the traditional orthographic forms visible on the Cornish landscape for at least four centuries. Book Synopsis Many people first take an interest in the Cornish language because they are curious to learn more about the distinctive and fascinating place names of Cornwall. The key to understanding the meaning of these place-names is language. Most derive from the Cornish language primarily, but many of them have their roots in Old English, Middle English, French, and other languages which have left their mark on Cornwall. Through the tireless and exacting work of place-name specialists, the secrets of Cornish place-names are being unlocked for everyone. This dictionary offers in a concise format more than 3,300 place-names. It is the fruit of Craig Weatherhill's many years of research, not only of the meaning of the names themselves, but of considering the question of how best to represent those names in Revived Cornish. The recommendations in this dictio-nary preserve the authentic and attested linguistic forms while at the same time honouring the traditional orthographic forms which have been visible on the Cornish landscape for at least four centuries. The orthography used in this dictionary is compatible with the Standard Written Form (SWF), adopted by the Cornish Language Partnership for educational and official use. It is also compatible with Kernowek Standard (KS), a practical orthography which informed the development of the SWF. In turn, KS has been modified in light of the published SWF specifi-ca-tion, while adopting a few emendations to make the ortho-graphy more consistent and more like the spelling of traditional Cornish.

Arizona's Worst Disaster - by Jim Liggett (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 206Genre: ReferenceSub-Genre: ResearchFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Desert Roamer Press, LLCAge Range: AdultAuthor: Jim LiggettLanguage: English Book Synopsis Arizona's Worst Disaster is research done on the Walnut Grove Dam Disaster of 1890 that includes the history leading up to the failure, the failure and the repercussions from it. Jim Liggett, a retired professor from Cornell University with a Ph.D. in engineering, did the research in writing this book once he retired to Arizona from where he grew up as a youngster. In his book he has performed in depth research surrounding the dam and then added his calculations concerning the amount of water stored in the dam and the high water levels as the tsunami of water jettisoned down the canyon on its way to Wickenburg. It is a poignant view of engineering and dam building prior to the 1900's. The story of the Walnut Grove Dam Disaster further lets us reflect back on how far we have come in the engineering of today's dams and water projects.
