Red Shirt - by Lawrence D Sundberg (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 598Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Cultural, Ethnic & RegionalFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Sunstone PressAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Lawrence D SundbergLanguage: English Book Synopsis Henry Lafayette Dodge has long been a familiar name in 19th century American Southwestern history. As one of the earliest and most effective Indian agents to the Navajo, he has been portrayed as a congenial, sympathetic and compassionate advocate for the tribe-a veritable role model. The Navajo knew him as Red Shirt, a man they came to respect, appreciate and trust. Those who knew Dodge admitted, although often grudgingly, that he had unrivaled influence over the tribe. By today's sensibilities, Henry L. Dodge was hardly a role model. In his youth, he was irresponsible, hot-headed and violent. As an adult, he was sued for assault and battery, land fraud, breach of promises and misuse of public funds. He apparently couldn't be trusted with money, his own or others'. Finally brought down by scandal, he fled Wisconsin in the dead of night, abandoning his career, his wife and his children, leaving them nearly destitute. How then should history assess him? Honestly: precisely as he was, an ambitious and imperfect man. The honest telling gives a straightforward account of not only Henry L. Dodge, but what became the veritable mythology of the West, from the bawdy old French Missouri river towns to the raucous lead mining districts of southwest Wisconsin, through the slaughter of the war to the invasion of New Mexico and the chaos of the Indian frontier; it is a gritty personal tale of the true West. LAWRENCE D. SUNDBERG was born on June 19, 1952. From an early age he was fascinated with the peoples, lands and cultures of Arizona and New Mexico. After earning a BA in Anthropology and elementary teacher certification, he taught fourth and fifth grades on the Navajo reservation for eighteen years, during which time he wrote "Dinetah, An Early History of the Navajo People," published by Sunstone Press of Santa Fe. He presently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and teaches English as a Second Language to adult refugees and immigrants for Catholic Charities of New Mexico.

Number of Pages: 134Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: GeneralFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Studio GriffinAge Range: AdultAuthor: Maurice L Griffin & Ruth E GriffinLanguage: English Book Synopsis 'For better or for worse' aren't the words most people focus on when they're saying their wedding vows. And those weren't the words Maurice and Ruth thought about until years later when Ruth was diagnosed with Bipolar II Depression. It was then their vows were tested, and they found out exactly what they agreed to when they said, "I do." In When Love Is Angry: A Memoir From the Other Side of Mental Illness, Maurice and Ruth share their story of pain, frustration and misunderstanding, but also triumph and restoration. Their willingness to turn to God in the 'for worse' part brought them to 'for better' and turned their story of mental illness to one of overcoming that which is seemingly impossible and discovering purpose from painful places.

Kennedy assassination reveals the details of Chauncey Marvin Holt's many claims. Much mystery and suspicion still swirls around that fateful day in November 1963, and theories abound in nearly every form of media. But one of the major mysteries revolves around the three men spotted and later arrested in Dealey Plaza. Holt's controversial confession to being one of the three tramps has a history of its own, and in his own words he delves into his unique and wild background and life. From his United States Air Force service during Pearl Harbor to his associations with the mob and the CIA, Holt discusses his experiences and encounters in great detail. From a man who truly lived a rare and unique life, the book explains the ins and outs of his associations with Lee Harvey Oswald and the assassination in this unique retrospective of a complex and occasionally dubious life. Karl Marx and the Birth of Modern Society - by Michael Heinrich (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 464Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: PoliticalFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Monthly Review PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Michael HeinrichLanguage: English About the Book "For over a century, Karl Marx's critique of capitalism has been a crucial resource for social movements. Now, recent economic crises have made it imperative for us to comprehend and actualise Marx's ideas. But without a knowledge of Karl Marx's life as he lived it, neither Marx nor his works can be fully understood. There are more than twenty-five comprehensive biographies of Marx, but none of them consider his life and work in equal, corresponding measure. This biography, planned for three volumes, aims to include what most biographies have reduced to mere background: the contemporary conflicts, struggles, and disputes that engaged Marx at the time of his writings, alongside his complex relationships with a varied assortment of friends and opponents. This first volume will deal extensively with Marx's youth in Trier and his studies in Bonn and Berlin. It will also examine the function of poetry in his intellectual development and his first occupation with Hegelian philosophy and with the so-called "young Hegelians" in his 1841 Dissertation. Already during this period, there were crises as well as breaks in Marx's intellectual development that prompted Marx to give up projects and re-conceptualise his critical enterprise. This volume is the beginning of an astoundingly dimensional look at Karl Marx - a study of a complex life and body of work through the neglected issues, events, and people that helped comprise both. It is destined to become a classic."--Provided by publisher. Battling political partisanship while trying to place the needs of the nation as a whole over those of state and localities, Hoover found his program for America's entry into the new scientific era overwhelmed by profound changes in the social and economic structure of a nation entering a new age. Book Synopsis An illuminating appraisal of the thirty-first president of the United States This detailed account of Herbert Hoover's presidency reveals him as a staunch defender of constitutional government and one of our least understood presidents. Battling political partisanship while trying to place the needs of the nation as a whole over those of state and localities, Hoover found his program for America's entry into the new scientific era overwhelmed by profound changes in the social and economic structure of a nation entering a new age. From the outset of his presidency, Hoover faced opposition for his programs from within his own party. Criticized for not understanding "politics," it was instead traditional party practices that stymied much of what he tried to accomplish. Personally blamed for the financial disaster of 1929 that ushered in the Great Depression, he was defeated in the election of 1932 because, as some publications of the time observed, the country did not vote for Roosevelt, it voted against Hoover. Despite opposition at every turn from both the opposing party and the progressive faction among his fellow Republicans, Hoover in retrospect emerges, in the words of the authors, as "a determined spokesman for the traditional American virtues, hopes, and ideals of individual opportunity, personal freedom, and love of country." About the Author Edgar Eugene Robinson was head of the Department of History at Stanford University for 25 years. His pioneering books dealt with party history and the presidential vote, the leadership of Franklin D. Roosevelt, foreign policy, and the development of American democracy.Vaughn Davis Bornet was for many years professor of history and social science and chairman of the Social Sciences Division at Southern Oregon State College.

Life on the Mississippi - (Bantam Classics) by Mark Twain (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 416Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Literary FiguresSeries Title: Bantam ClassicsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Bantam ClassicsAge Range: AdultAuthor: Mark TwainLanguage: English Book Synopsis Fashioned from the same experiences that would inspire the masterpiece Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi is Mark Twain's most brilliant and most personal nonfiction work. It is at once an affectionate evocation of the vital river life in the steamboat era and a melancholy reminiscence of its passing after the Civil War, a priceless collection of humorous anecdotes and folktales, and a unique glimpse into Twain's life before he began to write. Written in a prose style that has been hailed as among the greatest in English literature, Life on the Mississippi established Twain as not only the most popular humorist of his time but also America's most profound chronicler of the human comedy. From the Back Cover Part travel book, part autobiography, and part social commentary, Life on the Mississippi is a memoir of the cub pilot's apprenticeship, a record of Twain's return to the river and to Hannibal as an adult, a meditation on the harsh vagaries of nature, and a study of the varied and sometimes violent activities engaged in by those who live on the river's shores. About the Author Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835, led one of the most exciting of literary lives. Raised in the river town of Hannibal, Missouri, Twain had to leave school at age 12 and was successively a journeyman printer, a steamboat pilot, a halfhearted Confederate soldier, and a prospector, miner, and reporter in the western territories. His experiences furnished him with a wide knowledge of humanity, as well as with the perfect grasp of local customs and speech which manifests itself in his writing. With the publication in 1865 of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, Twain gained national attention as a frontier humorist, and the bestselling Innocents Abroad solidified his fame. But it wasn't until Life on the Mississippi (1883), and finally, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), that he was recognized by the literary establishment as one of the greatest writers America would ever produce. Toward the end of his life, plagued by personal tragedy and financial failure, Twain grew more and more pessimistic--an outlook not alleviated by his natural skepticism and sarcasm. Though his fame continued to widen--Yale & Oxford awarded him honorary degrees--Twain spent his last years in gloom and exasperation, writing fables about "the damned human race."

The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal - (Library of Arabic Literature) Abridged by Ibn Al-Jawzī (Paperback)
Edition: AbridgedNumber of Pages: 480Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: ReligiousSeries Title: Library of Arabic LiteratureFormat: PaperbackPublisher: New York University PressAge Range: AdultAuthor: Ibn Al-Jawz & #299Language: English Book Synopsis The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal is a translation of the biography of Ibn Hanbal by the Baghdad preacher, scholar, and storyteller Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1200), newly abridged for a paperback readership by translator Michael Cooperson. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (d. 241/855), renowned for his profound knowledge of hadiths--the reports of the Prophet's sayings and deeds--is a major figure in the history of Islam. He was famous for living according to his own strict interpretation of the Prophetic model and for denying himself the most basic comforts, even though his family was prominent and his city, Baghdad, was then one of the wealthiest in the world. Ibn Ḥanbal's piety and austerity made him a folk hero, especially after he resisted the attempts of two caliphs to force him to accept rationalist doctrine. His subsequent imprisonment and flogging is one of the most dramatic episodes of medieval Islamic history, and his principled resistance influenced the course of Islamic law, the rise of Sunnism, and the legislative authority of the caliphate. Set against the background of fierce debates over the role of reason and the basis of legitimate government, The Life of Ibn Ḥanbal tells the formidable life tale of one of the most influential Muslims in history. An English-only edition. Review Quotes Cooperson's translation is uncommonly deft. On the whole, this translation is a grand success. It will be valuable for teachers to illustrate early Islamic piety, early Islamic law, early Sunni theology, and everyday life in Baghdad.--Christopher Melchert "Journal of Islamic Studies"Gives readers a unique vantage point into the life and piety of the namesake of the Hanbali school of Sunni law...Ibn al-Jawzi, drawing on earlier reports, reconstructs the life and morality of his hero as a complex, earnest, and playful man; Coopersons dynamic and accessible translation brings this last quality to the surface to an extent that would surprise many modern readers with preconceptions about Hanbalism.-- "Marginalia"Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in ḥadīth, history, theology, and law, and to anyone who appreciates a good read.-- "Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt"Michael Cooperson's fluid translation is accompanied by substantial notes and a glossary of names and terms.-- "Banipal Magazine" About the Author Ibn al-Jawzī (Author) Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) was a Baghdadi storyteller, preacher, and prolific Islamic scholar associated with the Hanbali school of jurisprudential thought. He is well known for his exegeses of the Qurʾan and Hadith, including his famous compendium, Al-Taḥqīq. Garth Fowden (Foreword by) Garth Fowden is the Sultan Qaboos Professor of Abrahamic Faiths at the University of Cambridge. Michael Cooperson (Translator) Michael Cooperson is Professor of Arabic in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures at UCLA. Airhead - by Emily Maitlis (Hardcover)
Number of Pages: 352Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: PoliticalFormat: HardcoverPublisher: Michael JosephAge Range: AdultAuthor: Emily MaitlisLanguage: English Book Synopsis THE TIMES & DAILY MAIL TOP 100 BOOKS OF SUMMER 'A WONDERFULLY SANE BOOK FOR OUR UNHINGED TIMES' Simon Schama The insightful, hilarious and engrossing memoir from one of our most eminent TV broadcasters, Newsnight's Emily Maitlis, as she takes you behind the scenes of the biggest news stories in recent years. 'A deliciously funny book about the high-wire act of broadcasting and the madness that surrounds it' The Times ___________ The things that are said on camera are only part of the story. Behind every interview there is a backstory. How it came about. How it ended. The compromises that were made. The regrets, the rows, the deeply inappropriate comedy. Making news is an essential but imperfect art, and it rarely goes according to plan. I never expected to find myself wandering around the Maharani of Jaipur's bedroom with Bill Clinton or invited to the Miss USA beauty pageant by its owner, Donald Trump. I never expected to be thrown into a provincial Cuban jail, or to be drinking red wine at Steve Bannon's kitchen table or spend three hours in a lift with Alan Partridge. I certainly didn't expect the Dalai Lama to tell me the story of his most memorable poo. The beauty of television is its ability to simplify, but that's also its weakness: it can distil everything down to one snapshot, one soundbite. Then the news cycle moves on. Airhead is my step back from the white noise. Before and after the camera started rolling, this is what really happened.___________A TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Smart, funny and brilliantly told stories about what goes on behind the scenes of television news. A joy' Elizabeth Day'Emily is a superb writer' The Sunday Times 'Maitlis paints a vivid picture of the intensity and unpredictability that come with her assignments . . . Book Synopsis Richard St. Barbe Baker was an inspirational visionary and pioneering environmentalist who is credited with saving and planting billions of trees. Patients)Format: PaperbackPublisher: Page Publishing, Inc.Age Range: AdultAuthor: Josh NovotnyLanguage: English Book Synopsis "Put your foot back on the cliff and step away from the edge," said on April 4, 2012, by the newest of our attending physicians to my son, Josh. Josh had just told the doctor that he felt like he was on the rim of a cliff, with one foot hanging over the edge. It was obvious Josh's determination to keep fighting was what was hanging on that cliff, teetering all too close to the edge. As the doctor got up to leave Josh's hospital room that day, Josh mustered every bit of energy he had, fought the pain he was feeling in his legs, and stood up to shake the doctor's hand. The doctor's pronouncement gave us all hope that maybe, just maybe, there might be some answers among the myriad of doctors that had paraded through Josh's hospital room.On that day in the little notebook that had become my own daily log regarding Josh's medical condition, I wrote, "Thank God for this doctor."This is not a story, bit by bit, of detailed medical jargon or descriptions. It is not meant to cast doubt on individual doctors, decisions made or not made, the medical profession, or military hospitals. It is simply a story of courage.Courage, "the ability to face danger, difficulty, uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being deflected from a chosen course of action." Bravery.

From Calcutta to Connecticut - by Amitabha Ghosh Roy (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 202Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Personal MemoirsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Sdp PublishingAge Range: AdultAuthor: Amitabha Ghosh RoyLanguage: English Book Synopsis From Calcutta to Connecticut is a memoir by Dr. A. Ghosh Roy, a distinguished Boston-area surgeon who grew up in India during the tumultuous post-colonial days. With an eye for detail and good humor, Dr. Roy vividly recounts the culture of his homeland-the colorful festivals, the food, the traditions, kite-fighting, and yes, the snake charmers-and how he followed his dream of becoming a surgeon despite his family being of modest means. After graduating from medical school in Calcutta and going to work for a railroad company to provide medical care for its employees, Dr. Roy heard that American hospitals were looking for doctors to come and intern. He applied, was accepted, and found himself on a plane to Connecticut. His initial culture shock would slowly turn into culture embrace, and by the end of his year he would be a man now of two cultures, one foot rooted in India, the other in his newly adopted home. From Calcutta to Connecticut offers a fresh perspective on the immigrant experience, the enduring lure of the American Dream, and how, in the end-even though we may express it uniquely-we are all more alike than we are different.

Arriving to take up the Headmastership as a bachelor, he married into one of Perth's most prominent families and then proceeded to revolutionise secondary education in Western Australia.Working in ramshackle buildings, that were barely fit for purpose, he developed the curriculum, set a high standard for university entrance qualifications and produced four Rhodes scholars in his time at the school. He also pursued a policy for his boys of a 'healthy mind in a healthy body' and fostered all sports, gymnasium activities, calisthenics and physical education. He always maintained his greatest achievement was developing the 'tone' of the High School boy. It is his enduring legacy.Along the way he won lasting friendships with some of the notable educators and political figures of the day and lost many fine boys on the battlefields of South Africa, Gallipoli and in Europe. For twenty-four years, he battled prejudice, litigation, a serious health crisis and tragic personal loss, but endured; setting up the Public Schools' Association and leading it, as President, for a decade, from its inception, in 1905 until his retirement. The denouement of his life was not what he had hoped for or envisaged.

People You Follow - by Hayley Gene Penner (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 264Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Personal MemoirsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Dundurn GroupAge Range: AdultAuthor: Hayley Gene PennerLanguage: English About the Book In this deliciously entertaining memoir, Hayley Gene Penner digs into her sexual history to unearth stories that delicately straddle ethical and unethical behaviour, self-protection and self-destruction. Book Synopsis "A journey down the rabbit hole of LA's most subtly toxic industry ... funny, brilliant, coy, playful, and wise." -- LENA DUNHAM, author of Not That Kind of GirlMusician Hayley Gene Penner tells all in this harrowingly honest memoir.Singer-songwriter Hayley Gene Penner's memoir takes a brutally honest yet humorous look at the dark, intimate truths we spend our lives running from. Like a map of beautiful mistakes, Hayley's stories of questionable sexual encounters, artistic aspirations, and emotional abuse trace her coming of age in the music industry.Hayley explores all her relationships -- from her childhood as the daughter of a celebrity, to the destructive and coercive relationship with her boss, to her encounter with the actor we all know but who mustn't be named -- and brings them together in a series of sharp, touching vignettes. People You Follow straddles the delicate boundary between ethical and unethical behaviour, self-protection and self-destruction, power and weakness, giddiness and despair. Review Quotes People You Follow is a fucked-up Alice in Wonderland journey down the rabbit hole of LA's most subtly toxic industry, and it's also funny, brilliant, coy, playful, and wise. I feel so lucky that Hayley is here to express how hard dating in Hollywood is for the bunch of us, and I'm also glad that young women can read about her emotional pratfalls and save themselves the same pain as they work to become artists as skilled as she is.-- "Lena Dunham, author of Not That Kind of Girl"A good songwriter is someone who makes the listener feel like the words were stolen right out of their mouth, and Hayley has that same quality as an author. People You Follow left me feeling colorful, excited, empowered, completely vulnerable, a little heartbroken, and incredibly inspired.-- "Charlotte Lawrence, singer-songwriter and model"Hayley's journey to find self-love is both heartbreaking and humorous. I recognized my own younger self and how we, as women, struggle to find our value through the eyes of others. While Hayley's story may be more dramatic than others, we are rooting for her as she finds herself and the power of no.--Cindy CrawfordHayley's memoir masquerades as a comedic take on a young woman discovering and defining her sexuality. You are so distracted by the breezy comedy of the insane true-life stories that you don't see the gut punches coming.-- "Bill Lawrence, writer/creator of Scrubs, Cougar Town, Spin City"Honesty is powerful and vulnerability is even more so, and Hayley wields her power in spades. Her writing pulls you in, keeps you company, and forges a connection that most authors can only dream of creating, and her words reflect her profound and unique gift of self expression. To be privy to her stories and her storytelling is a privilege, and one that will resonate with anybody who's battled with their truths, their pasts, and the way they see themselves.-- "Anne T. Donahue, author of Nobody Cares"Reading Hayley Gene Penner's memoir felt like I was with my funniest, naughtiest friend, who came over to drink tequila and tell me secret stories. Each cautionary tale is full of dark humor, desire, and sexy sex in the most vulnerable and authentic way. I loved every minute.-- "Christa Miller"Singer-songwriter Hayley Gene Penner's memoir is a coming-of-age story steeped in the music industry... Penner recalls her artistic inspirations, abusive bosses, questionable decisions and more.-- "Winnipeg Free Press"This is Hayley in book form. So perfectly written, with her humor giving a light to situations that don't always have one. Beautifully written words for a good laugh and the occasional necessary cry.-- "Kaia Gerber, model and actor" About the Author Hayley Gene Penner grew up sharing the stage with her father, renowned children's entertainer Fred Penner. She writes with some of the biggest artists and producers in the music industry. Her debut album, and her memoir's namesake, People You Follow, also released in 2020. She splits her time between Winnipeg and Los Angeles.

Glimpses of a Town - by Patricia Joyce Parsons (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 158Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Personal MemoirsFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Bayline BooksAge Range: AdultAuthor: Patricia Joyce ParsonsLanguage: English About the Book This collection of vignettes describes the author's experience growing up in the small bayside town of Cape Charles, Virginia, from 1940 to 1960. Book Synopsis Situated on Virginia's Eastern Shore, Cape Charles was once a vibrant railroad town, serving as a vital hub for troop movements between the northern and southern states during World War II. Its placement on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, along with its fleet of ferries and fishing boats and its position among the farming communities of the Eastern Shore, made it a town of plenty in the lean times of rationing that occurred during the war-and a perfect place for a child to grow up.Glimpses of a Town takes the reader on a nostalgic, invigorating journey through Cape Charles with a child's-eye view-from playing in a swamp to jumping the railroad's coal chute to fishing the barrier islands that line Virginia's oceanfront. In this collection of vignettes, Patricia Parsons portrays life in Cape Charles during World War II and beyond. Using her own childhood memories and her family's life as a powerful touchstone, she follows the town's period of prosperity into a period of decline that transformed it from a bustling commercial center to a forsaken backwater-and back again. Recently, this historic town has experienced revitalization, rising from its own ashes to become a family-style tourist destination. Today, Cape Charles beckons you to explore-and see why it truly is a memorable town. Review Quotes "In Glimpses of a Town, Pat Parsons reflects with warm nostalgia on her experiences growing up in a lovely and proud Victorian bayside village on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Her delightful portrayal of daily life during WWII, and of Cape Charles's struggle to survive the changing times, provide valuable insight into the history of the area." John M. Barber, Fellow, American Society of Marine Artists "Pat Parsons's new book, Glimpses of a Town, speaks of her youth growing up in the Chesapeake Bay waterfront/railroad town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Parsons's straightforward approach to storytelling and marvelous memory capture the very essence of small-town American life during the decades of the 1940s and 50s. Her tales make the reader long for those wonderful, simple days of youth. Although specific to the town of Cape Charles, her well-written stories will interest those near and far as her life memories are a reminder for many of their own lives growing up in small town America. . . . [W]ell worth reading!" The Boy Who Loved Too Much - by Jennifer Latson (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 304Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: People with DisabilitiesFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Simon & SchusterAge Range: AdultAuthor: Jennifer LatsonLanguage: English Book Synopsis The acclaimed, poignant story of a boy with Williams syndrome, a condition that makes people biologically incapable of distrust, a "well-researched, perceptive exploration of a rare genetic disorder seen through the eyes of a mother and son" (Kirkus Reviews). What would it be like to see everyone as a friend? Twelve-year-old Eli D'Angelo has a genetic disorder that obliterates social inhibitions, making him irrepressibly friendly, indiscriminately trusting, and unconditionally loving toward everyone he meets. It also makes him enormously vulnerable. On the cusp of adolescence, Eli lacks the innate skepticism that will help him navigate coming-of-age more safely--and vastly more successfully. In "a thorough overview of Williams syndrome and its thought-provoking paradox" (The New York Times), journalist Jennifer Latson follows Eli over three critical years of his life, as his mother, Gayle, must decide whether to shield Eli from the world or give him the freedom to find his own way and become his own person. Watching Eli's artless attempts to forge connections, Gayle worries that he might never make a real friend--the one thing he wants most in life. "As the book's perspective deliberately pans out to include teachers, counselors, family, friends, and, finally, Eli's entire eighth-grade class, Latson delivers some unforgettable lessons about inclusion and parenthood," (Publishers Weekly). The Boy Who Loved Too Much explores the way a tiny twist in a DNA strand can strip away the skepticism most of us wear as armor, and how this condition magnifies some of the risks we all face in opening our hearts to others. More than a case study of a rare disorder, The Boy Who Loved Too Much "is fresh and engaging...leavened with humor" (Houston Chronicle) and a universal tale about the joys and struggles of raising a child, of growing up, and of being different. Review Quotes "Latson tells [this] story with great sympathy and eloquence, giving voice to the frustration, anguish, and despair a parent feels when their child struggles with a rare disorder. A well-researched, perceptive exploration of a rare genetic disorder seen through the eyes of a mother and son." ---Kirkus Reviews "[Jennifer Latson] skillfully interweaves the science--what we do and don't know about genetic disorders such as Williams--with a powerful story line. Eli and especially Gayle are beautifully drawn, and their struggles with an unknown future are both unique to their situation and universal to all parents. As the book's perspective deliberately pans out to include teachers, counselors, family, friends, and, finally, Eli's entire eighth-grade class, Latson delivers some unforgettable lessons about inclusion and parenthood." ---Publishers Weekly "Latson blends life concerns and hard medical facts in this widely appealing chronicle of a fascinating disorder." ---Booklist

The Days of Rondo - (Minnesota) by Evelyn Fairbanks (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 192Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: Cultural, Ethnic & RegionalSeries Title: MinnesotaFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Minnesota Historical Society PressAge Range: AdultBook theme: GeneralAuthor: Evelyn FairbanksLanguage: English About the Book Evelyn Fairbanks lived along Rondo Avenue-the heart of St. Paul's largest black community-from the 1930s through the 1950s. Her memoir tells warm and human stories recalling those years in a vibrant community that vanished with the coming of the freeways in the 1960s. Book Synopsis In the 1930s and the 1940s Rondo Avenue was at the heart of St. Paul's largest black neighborhood. African Americans whose families had lived in Minnesota for decades and others who were just arriving from the South made up a vibrant, vital community that was in many ways independent of the white society around it.The Days of Rondo is Evelyn Fairbanks's affectionate memoir of this lively neighborhood. Its pages are filled with fascinating people: Mama and Daddy--Willie Mae and George Edwards--who taught her about love and pride an dignity; Aunt Good, a tall and stately woman with a "queenly secretive attitude"; brother Morris, who "took the time to teach me about the street and the people I would find there"; Mrs. Neal, the genteel activist who showed her the difference between a salad fork and a dessert fork; Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, who started a girls' string band; and a whole assortment of street vendors and playmates who made up the world of her childhoodAs she grew up, Fairbanks saw many different sides of her community. Her words bring to life the all-day Sunday services at the Sanctified church, the "perfect days" of her girlhood, and the ghost stories told on the porch of a soft midwestern summer evening. But she also remembers a visit to relatives in Georgia, the deaths of her Mama and Daddy, and the difficult lessons her free-wheeling brother taught her about friends and money. By the time Evelyn was a teenager, World War II was changing St. Paul and the whole world in ways that touched upon her own life. And through the years she was also discovering what it meant to grow up as a black person in Minnesota.A gifted storyteller, Fairbanks has recreated the patterns of her neighborhood life in a northern city. Her story ends in the mid-1950s, a few years before the Rondo neighborhood was destroyed by freeway construction. In preserving her memories of this distinctive community, Evelyn Fairbanks has added an important dimension to our understanding of Minnesota during those years."Fairbanks spins yarns about St. Paul's black society with the flair of a campfire storyteller." --St. Paul Pioneer Press "Must reading for anyone wanting a clearer understanding of the history of race relations." --Library Journal "Narrative history at its best." --Choice "Her prose is simple and concise and is leavened by a rich sense of humor." --Minnesota Monthly "The Days of Rondo is an interpretive account of events in the life of a black family from the South struggling for survival and meaning in a northern city. Rich in humor and detail, it provides a well-illustrated mosaic of socioeconomic, ethnic, and class realities as seen through the eyes of a young black woman." --David V. A Lesser Mortal - by Kimberly Hess (Paperback)
Number of Pages: 248Genre: Biography + AutobiographySub-Genre: HistoricalFormat: PaperbackPublisher: Books FluentAge Range: AdultAuthor: Kimberly HessLanguage: English Book Synopsis Sarah B. Cochran probably didn't expect to own businesses that competed with Henry Clay Frick's or to exceed Andrew Carnegie's philanthropic giving in certain circles. But when her husband and son died suddenly, she had to take over the family coal and coke business at a time when it was illegal, and some thought unlucky, for women to work in or around coal mines. Rather than retreating from the world, from her forties through her seventies she engaged with it through philanthropic activity that shifted power, championed others and influenced causes. But even today her contributions can be difficult to identify without already knowing they exist. This book is an introduction to Sarah's story for academics, genealogists, history buffs and those interested in sharing stories of other "lesser mortals" who created significant changes but remain largely unknown. Review Quotes The story of Sarah Cochran is a quiet surprise for anyone who cares about philanthropy today. Her life is an inspiration showing the lasting good that comes from regional philanthropy and from major donors who are not, what we would call today, "mega-donors." It's also a testament to the ongoing generosity of women, who tend to give more quietly, but no less impactfully than their male peers. And it reminds us to celebrate the unknowing inheritors of Sarah's legacy, those women who have made their ways in new industries, hail from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, and have different causes than Sarah, but share her spirit of not withdrawing from the world to live in comfort, but to engage with the things they care about.-Dara Weinerman Steinberg, Philanthropic Advisor Kimberly Hess' biography of Sarah B. Cochran is a reminder that focus on Philadelphia and Pittsburgh leaves blind spots in Pennsylvania history. Cochran overcame numerous hardships to become an unlikely woman of industry who moved among Carnegie, Frick, Heinz, and others. However, her womanhood and dedication to her hometown in the Connellsville coke district mean her legacy is now mostly identifiable only to those in Fayette County who know to look for it. A Lesser Mortal changes that.-Samuel J. Richards, western PA native, historian of northern Appalachia, current faculty at Shanghai American School "Kimberly Hess has presented the history of a feminist in crisp detail with a great deal of supporting evidence and intelligent conjecture when necessary. Marriage created the opportunity that changed Sarah's life. Sarah in turn created opportunities for many more women (and men) through her financial generosity as well as her stature in the male dominated world of coal and coke."-Donna M. Griffin, former Director of Global Operations, Chubb Group Of Insurance Companies
