With top-notch CineMag transformers and multiple discrete signal paths, it's hard to beat its big, bold, fully-professional sound at its price.
The Tone Beast is a mic pre that likes to be pushed and when pushed will colorize signal ever so sweetly. The 2 opamps and 2 output transformers at the flip of their switches won't appear to be much different, but as one drives the pre into harmonic distortion, the unique character of each of these components becomes apparent. Additionally the Tone Beast is customizable and allows for other opamps to be sourced and easily swapped into the unit. I've pulled my best tones from this pre right at the saturation point (as loud as I can push the gain before clipping). The output control on the TB12 allows to limit the signal exiting the preamp even when pushing the gain to really hot levels, giving maximum control.
The x731 (Melcor 1731) and x18 (Dean Jensen's 918) Op Amps saturate a bit differently. The 1731 breaks up faster and has more color when pushed. The 918 is fairly linear/clean with a smidge of character and does not break-up/saturate as quickly. The 100% steel output transformer colors the signal more than the 50% nickel transformer when pushed. However, both are designed to impart character. The 50% nickel transformer will impart less character and provide greater high and low frequencies. For an ultra clean, character-lacking tone, try the x18 while bypassing the output transformers completely.
Have no fear of hurting the Beast, can push it very hard into full-on distortions if wish, and these can sound quite nice on electric guitar, bass or anything else that likes some nice grit.
When hand building mic pres I learned a bit about the "subtle" differences component choices can make. A little change here, and another there often times became a huge deal in a finished mix, but often times is not very noticeable at first take. The different component options in the TB12 are subtle, but when driven into saturation are noticeable and can make a big difference to the way final mix will sound.
Home-based musicians and professional studios alike will find the Tone Beast to be an extremely powerful and fully professional piece of gear that is capable of warming and shaping signals/mixes in a way that is very pleasing to the ear.
History behind the tone beast
In the '60s and '70s many console/preamplifier builders hid the operational amplifier (Op amp) stage of their preamps by cramming its components into a small box and then attaching the box to the circuit board. Inside these small boxes, the components were covered in glue to make them hard to disassemble/analyze. Manufacturers of that day felt the character these Op Amps imparted was unique enough to protect.
A trend grew in the industry where the little box the Op Amp components sat in became of similar size and shape between manufacturers. These boxes eventually mounted to the PCB board with the same number of pins, spaced identically, even from different manufacturers. could remove an Op Amp from one console preamp and place it in another of a different manufacturer without much headache/difficulty.
The TB12 uses this same square shaped op amp and pin configuration as these originals but not enclosed in plastic and glue. The TB12 is designed so that users can remove the stock opamps and replace them with their own. If are a tone FREAK like me will love the ability to do this. Beware that Warm Audio may not be able to warranty a unit that has been opened and tinkered with. Below are some examples of 6 pin opamps that can pop right into the Tone Beast.

With the OSCILLATE function turned on, the CUTOFF knob sets the tuning of the synth effect while the VCA instantly follows the volume of input signal. The synthesizer sounds created by the Resotron can also be radically altered by switching between the LPF, BPF and HPF modes, each of which has its own distinctive waveform and modulation characteristics when overdriven by the on-board compressor.
The multi-mode filter at the heart of the Resotron can be set to Low Pass (LPF), Band Pass (BPF) or High Pass (HPF) modes. Each of these voices has a distinctive character which can be manipulated by adjusting the PEAK knob to emphasize frequencies below, at or above the position of the CUTOFF knob. As the PEAK is increased, the resonance or “Q” of the filter becomes more extreme, up to the point of self-oscillation. A SENSITIVY control sets how dramatically the pedal will respond to playing dynamics in the UP and DOWN envelope modes, while a GLIDE control allows to set how long it takes for the filter to move between notes in the PITCH mode.
Before the signal from the input of the pedal hits the filter inside the Resotron, it passes through an optical compression stage derived from the Philosopher’s Tone pedal. The increased volume and punch from the compressor can then be mixed into the audio signal using the BLEND control without affecting the SENSITIVITY of the envelope. Resotron accepts active CV and passive TRS expression pedal inputs for foot-controlled filter sweeps and outboard modulation which is mixed in parallel with the on-board pitch-following and amplitude tracking systems. The Resotron also features a TRIGGER (aka Sidechain) input which enables the musician to use an external audio source to modulate the filter.

Dual-Switch Action
Loop and the drum controls are separated, left footswitch (LOOP) controls recording and overdubs, and start/stop plays the recorded loop tracks. It’s also TAP Tempo control, can set the drum speed by tapping the left footswitch before record a track.
Looper Action
There are 2 loop recording actions on JTC Pro; Record and Play (RP), and Record and Overdub (RD). In Record and Overdub action; JTC Pro will record it over and over while playing the previous tracks
High Quality Drum Sound - Smart Drum Fills
Right footswitch (RHYTHM) controls the drum and it adds a drum fill during the performance. Drum fills length is one measure (depends on 4/4 or 3/4 rhythms). When hit the RHYTHM button, drum fill will start immediately and it will play until the end of the current bar. For example if push the switch at 3rd beat -> drums fill length will be 2 beats only. There are 40 drum patterns and fills including Pop, Rock, Blues, Metal and more other styles with 3/4 and 4/4 beats.
Start/Stop Modes
It has very useful and stop modes for making jam sounds like an arranged song during the performance. There are 2 Start Modes and 3 Stop Modes;
Start Modes
Press and hold the Stop Modes button, and select a start mode; (Ar) Auto-Recording, (Nr) Normal Recording
Normal Recording - Classic hit and play looper action. JTC Pro will start recording when push the loop switch.
Auto-Recording - In this mode, when push the loop switch, the JTC Pro will be standing by for recording. And it will start recording immediately when hit the guitar strings.
Stop Modes
After record a track, can simply push the Stop Modes button, and choose one of the modes to finish performance the way like.
Normal Stop - Double hit to Loop switch and the looping track will stop immediately.
Fine Stop - Double hit: The track will play until the end then it will stop, don't forget to hit finishing chord after it stop.
Fade Out - The track volume will be decreased to 0 slowly in 10 seconds then it will stop.
One-Shot Mode
And, One Shot mode is very useful for playing any loaded backing track without looping. can load any song to play along, the supported file type is 24-bit 44.1 kHz Stereo Wave (.wav)

Advanced Output Options and Frequency Optimization (FR ON/OFF)
JTC Pro has 2 outputs and there are several output modes; a stereo connection to two amplifiers, or can activate the built-in speaker cabinet simulation for Right Output to send guitar signal directly to a PA system (or any PA monitor).
JTC Pro’s drum sound is high quality real sound, when connect to any guitar amplifier or PA system will hear a full range and dynamic drums, still, if are using a small practice amplifier there is an optional drum frequency optimization. It makes the drum sounds more clear and helps to get a real looper experience with the smaller amplifiers.
External Footswitch Input
can connect NUX NMP-2 control footswitch (sold separately) or any equal pedal to use as a controller. can switch Up and Down between the memory slots. When push the UP or DOWN button, the current track will be played until the end, can switch right next to preset or jump between several presets at once.

SNL Guitarist and fuzz fanatic, Jared Scharff, approached Walrus about doing a modern filtered fuzz inspired by his favorite vintage fuzz pedal, the Kay Fuzz Tone. Fuzz
Get two different styles of fuzz with the M/V Switch. In the modern position (M), notice a more forgiving fuzz with longer and tighter sustain, while the Vintage position (V) feels starved with spatty breakup and grittier, shorter sustain.
Filter
The Kangra also has a versatile filter with Resonance, Sensitivity, Frequency and Envelope Filter controls. Use the filter on its own to add a unique shape to sound, or flip the Envelope Filter switch and open up funky sixties style tones.

The art was inspired by a once in a life time expedition Jared took to the Kangra Valley near the Himalaya Mountains.
