New Moon Daughter
Her luscious alto has the depth and texture of a great tenor saxophonist, but Cassandra Wilson s defining asset is a postmodern song sense that enables her to surf through Son House, Neil Young, Johnny Mercer, Billie Holiday, and (gasp!) the Monkees in pursuit of strong songs that can provide that instrument with a canvas. Her second Blue Note album extends Wilson s seductive pilgrimage beyond the conventions of jazz repertoire and accompaniment, yet it s her instincts as a jazz singer that inform these brilliant readings. The settings again step away from traditional small group jazz (for starters, there s no piano) to evoke the emotional core of these songs. Anyone who can turn the Monkees Last Train to Clarksville into a slow-burning erotic vignette deserves your attention. --Sam SutherlandUPC:724383286126SKU:ADIB000005H0D
N'Awlinz Dis, Dat, or D'Udda
Mac Rebennack took his stage name from the voodoo healer Dr. John and became a 70s pop star by recasting New Orleans s myth and music in his own psychedelic image. At 63, he s again revamped the Crescent City sound, minus the acid-trip trappings, for his best album in decades. With its string, horn, and Afro-Latin percussion sections and its slate of re-imagined classics, N Awlinz is a masterful summation of Dr. John s abilities as a leader and performer. Guests such as Willie Nelson, B.B. King, and Mavis Staples, plus a roster of Louisiana luminaries including Randy Newman, Nicholas Payton, Snooks Eaglin, Gatemouth Brown, Dave Bartholomew, and Earl Palmer, all make winning contributions. In Dr. John s grasp, When the Saints Come Marching In becomes a stately waltz that twines his elegant piano and gravel throat with Staples s rich, red-clay gospel singing. And he honors the spirit of standards like Stackalee and St. James Infirmary while spinning his own lyrics and melodies into them. Time Marches On (with King, Nelson, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band), Life is a One Way Ticket, and several spirituals contemplate mortality, but never interrupt the graceful, upbeat flow of this late-career opus. --Ted DrozdowskiUPC:724357860222SKU:ADIB0001XQ6FE

Bing! Bing! Bing!
Bluenose jazz loyalists doubtless hate him, but the Bay Area s Charlie Hunter is one of the music s saviors for the 90s. With his customized eight-stringed guitar in hand, Hunter essays the greasy glories of early 60s jazz funk, serving as guitarist, bassist, and de facto organist in these groove-driven gems abetted by Dave Ellis ripe tenor saxophone and Jay Lane s concise, funky drumming. Acid jazz has understandably adopted Hunter as a leading light, but this music has more chops, heart, and reach--earning him the right to stand alongside better-known jazz and funk masters as a confident, compelling original. Infectious grooves prevail, and even Kurt Cobain gets funked up on a breezy and inventive deconstruction of Come As You Are. --Sam SutherlandUPC:724383180929SKU:ADIB000005GZ9

Artist In Residence
When you re an early success in jazz, the temptation is to hunker down in the style that s earned you acclaim. Pianist Jason Moran will have none of that. While thriving on the edgy interaction of his terrific working trio, Bandwagon, featuring bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits, he keeps reaching for new modes of expression, drawing upon sources as varied as Italian film themes, Turkish language rhythms and hip-hop. This time, he cuts loose behind smartly sampled commentary by conceptual artist Adrian Piper and waxes lyrical on a ballad featuring the operatic voice of his wife Alicia Hall Moran. Taken from works commissioned by institutions including the Walker Arts Center and Jazz at Lincoln Center, Artist in Residence tells us where Moran has been lately. However highfalutin the assignments, the music is remarkably personable, whether bridging minimalism and free jazz on RAIN (featuring trumpeter Ralph Alessi) or bluesifying Lift Every Voice (featuring guitarist Marvin Sewell). If you re looking for the state of the art--of the arts, even--look no further. --Lloyd SachsUPC:094636271125SKU:ADIB000H3097E

This 1993 recording is one of John Scofield s best, with a band that adds the soul-jazz veteran Eddie Harris to a group of the guitarist s regular associates, Larry Goldings on keyboards, Dennis Irwin on bass, Bill Stewart on drums, and Don Alias on percussion. Perhaps it s the mix of the familiar rhythm section with the novelty of playing with Harris, a player with a similar penchant for inside funk, outside approaches, and altered sounds, but Scofield is unusually animated. He digs into the rhythmic grooves and develops extended ideas throughout, most notably on I ll Take Les and Do Like Eddie, tributes to the onetime partnership of Harris and pianist McCann. Goldings is outstanding on piano as well as organ, and everyone involved contributes to making this a high point in contemporary soul jazz. --Stuart BroomerUPC:724382732723SKU:ADIB000005GWA
Little Broken Hearts
2012 album from the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter, produced by Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton). Little Broken Hearts is the fascinating next step in the artistic evolution of one of the music world s most consistently intriguing artists. Jones first emerged on the world stage 10 years ago this month with the February 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self-described moody little record that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 Grammy Awards and signaling a paradigm shift away from the prevailing synthetic pop music of the time. Come Away With Me has just become the #10 best-selling album of the Soundscan era. The album has sold 25 million copies worldwide.UPC:520716038987SKU:ADIB00723NWJE

After singing with Maynard Ferguson, this sublime song interpreter from Chicago recorded this 1958 debut. Al Cohn and Ernie Wilkins wrote the charts to Lazy Afternoon; Detour Ahead; The Night We Called It a Day; Comes Love , and the rest of these gorgeous performances by a singer who died too young (at 46) but left a deep, deep impression.UPC NO:094636980928 SKU:ADIB000H309OM
