Wilson enlisted Grammy-winning producer/bassist Mike Elizondo and a cast of musicians including legendary drummer Jim Keltner, violinist Petra Haden, and iconic saxophonist Charles Lloyd, to help him realize his vision. Virtuosic guitar and ensemble work, well-crafted songs, and intimate vocals drive this album, rooted deeply in jazz while summoning an array of diverse influences. & quot;Frogtown & quot; reaches across genres and evokes complex emotional landscapes. With & quot;Frogtown, & quot; Anthony Wilson steps confidently into the center of a vivid musical and personal portrait. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Anthony Wilson, best known as a jazz guitarist, has released an organic, occasionally “noir-ish”, sounding album on which he sets up and sings within cinematic musical landscapes, proving himself to be an equally compelling story teller. & quot;Frogtown & quot; is an area of Los Angeles, whose official name is & quot;Elysian Valley & quot;. People live there but other than a lush stretch of the L.A. riverbed, there's not much there, which is how the people like it. The same can't be said of this record, which will have you wondering from where came this Anthony Wilson? & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;Wilson doesn’t ease into this new role—he jumps: opening with “She Won’t Look Back”, which sounds conjured up by Angelo Badalamenti with direction by David Lynch. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; Not every musician can make convincing this kind of epic shift, but Wilson doesn’t force a note or vocal gesture unwinding a story that navigates skillfully from heartbreak to liberation... & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; The first of the album’s four sides ends with “Your Footprint”, a dreamy, late afternoon-sounding drift down reverie that Wilson’s vocal nails. First play leaves you wondering where this Anthony Wilson has been hiding all of these years? If the goal was to establish a crossover foothold in Norah Jones’s musical territory, mission accomplished. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; That was my thought before reading in the credits that Jones collaborator Jesse Harris plays harmonica on one tune. Harris’s Wikipedia page says his music has been described as a “blend of folk, rock, jazz and world rhythms” and that pretty much sums up what this record offers. Also onboard here on various tracks: Petra Haden, Patrick Warren, Jim Keltner and on one track Charles Lloyd.... & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;Produced by Mike Elizondo, who also plays bass and synth bass, and engineered by Adam Hawkins at Can-Am Recorders, the album’s sound and the deftly drawn arrangements (for some reason uncredited) perfectly compliment Wilson’s dreamy, rural intentions (producer Joe Harley gets a “audio consultation” credit). The sound achieves a rare level of transparency, delicacy and three-dimensionality in today’s hard-edged audio world. Bernie Grundman cut lacquers from what I assume were high resolution files. I doubt you’ll ask yourself “why buy the vinyl?” after your first listen. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; While those familiar with Wilson’s previous recorded output will be stunned and perhaps left confused after the first play, I think even those with no Wilsonian perspective will be equally moved by the record’s musical and sonic beauty and especially by Wilson’s evocative vocalizing. Who knew? & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; From the first note of the first song Frogtown engages and it doesn’t let go of its considerable grip for four sides... & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Michael Fremer, Analogplanet.com, April 12, 2016 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Anthony Wilson is surely one of today's most versatile, creative, and chameleonic guitarists...On Frogtown, Wilson moves into singer-songwriter territory, adding his voice to six of the record's 13 tracks. With a stellar group beside him...Wilson weaves a coherent, personal, and jazz-inflicted album...Frogtown is open and airy, with a relaxed, warm clarity that suits the music. Instruments are beautifully captured tonally and texturally, and Wilson's voice is nicely integrated with the unfussy mix. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Wayne Garcia, & lt;i & gt;The Absolute Sound & lt;/i & gt;, November 2016 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Double LP & lt;br & gt; • Mastered by Bernie Grundman at Bernie Grundman Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Audio consulation by Joe Harley & lt;br & gt; • 12 & quot; x 12 & quot; insert fold out with lyrics & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at RTI & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Anthony Wilson, guitars, vocals & lt;br & gt; Petra Haden, violin, bird whistle & lt;br & gt; Mike Elizondo, bass, synth bass & lt;br & gt; Patrick Warren, piano, organ, pump organ, autoharp, keyboards, samples & lt;br & gt; Jim Keltner, drums, percussion & lt;br & gt; Matt Chamberlain, drums, percussion & lt;br & gt; Charles Lloyd, tenor sax on & quot;Your Footprints & quot; & lt;br & gt; Jesse Harris, harmonica on & quot;Arcadia & quot; & lt;br & gt; Josh Nelson, piano on & quot;Silver And Flint & quot; and & quot; The Geranium & quot; & lt;br & gt; Daniel Rosenboom, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Bob Reynolds, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Adam Schroeder, baritone sax, bass clarinet & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;LP 1 & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;180g Vinyl LP + 48-Page Book! & lt;br & gt; Pressed at RTI! & lt;br & gt; Mastered by Kevin Gray! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Michael Fremer Rated 11/11 Music, 11/11 Sonics! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Goat Hill Recordings is proud to release guitarist Anthony Wilson's album of original work: & quot;Songs and Photographs, & quot; a 180gram vinyl LP and 48-page photo book developed and printed in creative collaboration with fine art publisher Nina Holland at Little Steidl in Germany. Taking up where his previous album & quot;Frogtown & quot; left off, & quot;Songs and Photographs & quot; is produced by audiophile legend Joe Harley and Wilson, featuring a master cast of players: pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Joshua Crumbly, keyboardist Patrick Warren, and drummer Jay Bellerose. The vinyl was mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; With & quot;Songs and Photographs, & quot; Anthony Wilson's musical quest for evermore authentic paths into song writing, improvisation, and performance combines beautifully with his own 35mm photography in a multifaceted work for the eyes and the ears. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;...The photobook demands and will get your attention and over time it will enhance rather than distract from the music. On his website Wilson writes “In Songs and Photographs the visual and musical paths of my process converge into a single work in which the songs and the photographs speak back and forth to each other.” & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; The lyrics to side one’s closer “In Canton” are printed on the other side of the shadow picture. One couplet stood out: “Dust in the finder, haze in the lens/Perspectives that warp, shadows that bend”. I have no idea if putting that song’s lyrics there was purposeful or whether I’m reading more into all of this than Wilson intended, but does that matter? Not really. The point of art is to provoke. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;In this case the provocation is a calmative balm that forces the listener to shut out the current world’s craziness and enter Wilson’s contemplative musical and lyrical ecosphere aided here by an intimate, transparent recording that sets a sonic stage and lingers effortlessly there throughout. Put the booklet down, turn out the lights, relax and just listen... & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;Wilson’s liquid playing on this record soothes and circles with musical gestures one more striking than the next, surrounded by a sympathetic and at time provocative backing group consisting of Gerald Clayton on piano, Joshua Crumbly on bass, Patrick Warren on keyboards, samples, organ, pump organ and dulcitone and Jay Bellerose on percussion that includes a pipe-bomb of a kick drum stomp that will challenge and perhaps defeat your cartridge so be prepared. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; The production by Wilson and “Tone Poet” Joe Harley (a name given by Charles Lloyd and worn somewhat uncomfortably by Harley) and Michael C. Ross’s engineering delivers a “who needs tape?” digital recording. I know it’s risky to write that here, but listen and try arguing otherwise. The transparency, three-dimensionality and instrumental and vocal “body” rival the best tape recordings I can think of and the background blackness out of which all of this emerges, betters them all. The three dimensional picture the recording paints is vivid and the bottom end weight will make your speakers throb in a good way. The record is cut to close to the label and the bass drum is not easily tracked! If your reaction is “then who needs physical media?” you’ve not seen the package and the book, which is necessary to fully appreciate the experience. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Michael Fremer, & lt;i & gt;Analogplanet.com & lt;/i & gt;, February 11, 2019 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; 180g Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; 48-Page Photo book & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Designed and printed by Nina Holland at Little Steidl & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Vinyl pressed at Record Technology Inc. & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Limited time download card & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Anthony Wilson, guitar, vocals, marimba (5) & lt;br & gt; Gerald Clayton, piano, marimba (1) & lt;br & gt; Joshua Crumbly, bass & lt;br & gt; Patrick Warren, keyboards, samples, organ, pump organ, dulcitone & lt;br & gt; Jay Bellerose, drums, percussion & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1.
