Bobbie Gentry Ode to Billie Joe 180g LP (Vinyl)
& lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Audio Beat Rated 3.5/5 Music, 3.5/5 Sound! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt;Remastered by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Gentry's first 1967 album is a masterpiece, it's a simple as that. An album of hauntingly beautiful songs penned by Bobbie herself bar one track. The album is an uncluttered, straight down the line collection of smoky voiced gems, mostly with the simplest guitar accompaniment, but with a quirky, almost psychedelic twist on each track. The album is in a very similar vein and feel to Rodriguez's stunning Cold Fact which came out three years later, and side by side you would imagine the later album may have been inspired by Bobbie's seminal Ode To Billy Joe. This album can also easily compare with Dusty's In Memphis for it's sheer intimacy and soulful feel and is certainly in the same league musically. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; After this first album, Bobbie moved into a more MOR groove, which in a way makes this such a stand out and important album. Very highly recommended especially as it has now been re-mastered at Abbey Road by Sean Magee. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;As usual, the Pallas pressing is exceptional -- free from artifacts and quiet to the very depths of the groove. Pure Pleasure has the most wide-ranging catalog among reissue labels, and this album is right at home with other off-the-beaten-track titles. & quot; & lt;/b & gt;- Marc Mickelson, www.theaudiobeat.com, 3.5/5 Music, 3.5/5 Sound! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl Analogue & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Remastered by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. This 1978 meeting between pianist Earl Hines and trumpeter Harry & quot;Sweets & quot; Edison is a match of masters, covering tunes they had likely performed hundreds of times in their respective careers. Everything seems to gel in the opening track, a strident take of 'I Cover The Waterfront,' with plenty of trills by Hines in support of Edison's brilliant open horn...There is nothing like two veterans at the top of their game joining forces for a record date. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; – All Music Guide & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g LP & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Earl Hines, piano & lt;br & gt; Harry & quot;Sweets & quot; Edison, trumpet & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Starry Starry Night is a collection of cover versions of mainly familiar material by drummer Paul Clarvis and pianist Liam Noble, two characterful lights of the British jazz scene. The tunes range from classic standards like Duke Ellington's & quot;Mood Indigo, & quot; the Gershwins' & quot;Embraceable You & quot; and Scott Joplin's & quot;Maple Leaf Rag, & quot; through to more recent treasures like Gillian Welch's & quot;Dear Someone, & quot; Don Maclean's & quot;Vincent (Starry Starry Night) & quot; and Moondog's & quot;Paris. & quot; The album is as intimate and seductive as the source material and instrumentation promise - Clarvis and Noble are respectful of the composers' original intentions, rarely straying far from the top-lines or basic changes - but the duo bring fresh fascination to even the most well-worn item. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. THE GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA GREAT JAZZ STANDARDS 180g LP (Vinyl)
& lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Featured in Michael Fremer's Heavy Rotation in the February 2012 Issue of Stereophile! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;180g LP Remastered by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios! Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Great Jazz Standards was recorded when Evans was red-hot from two successes with Miles Davis, Miles Ahead and Porgy And Bess. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Evans' signature brass choir is in place — creatively voiced, spaciously arranged, a supple, multi-coloured, sonically surprising counterpoint to a succession of superb soloists. The added bonus, for Evans' projects, is the foregrounding of saxophone and clarinet soloists Steve Lacy and Budd Johnson. Lacy and the original swing-to-bop missing link, Johnson, are the ones who will make the hair on your neck curl. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Lacy's solos on Monk's & quot;Straight No Chaser & quot; and John Lewis' & quot;Django & quot; must be some of the finest pre-free improvisations he recorded, already heading from quirky to out-there. Johnson's clarinet solo on Don Redman's spooky, swing-meets-whole tone classic, & quot;Chant Of The Weed, & quot; and slow-burning, stirring tenor solo on Evans' & quot;La Nevada & quot; are some of the finest the all-but-forgotten genius ever recorded. Trumpeter Johnny Coles, has the inevitable misfortune of being compared to Miles Davis and being found to be... different. Sunny, open and extroverted, he may not be a stylist of Davis' proportions, but he's an enjoyable alternative foil for Evans' arrangements. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; A magnificent but neglected album, and still coming up fresh as daisies. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Pure Pleasure’s musical archeological digs have managed to find some interesting obscurities, this Gil Evans session from 1959 being one of them. It certainly deserves to be brought to your attention...an atmospheric, cinematic approach to playing and arranging that is as startling and evocative today as it must have been back in 1959...if you appreciate this arranger’s art and wish to hear it realized fully through a series of mostly recognizable jazz standards packed with great soloing, your listening will be well-rewarded. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Michael Fremer, analogplanet & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Remastering & lt;br & gt; • Re-mastering by Ron McMaster at Capitol Studios & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Dick Carter, bass (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Tommy Potter, bass (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Dennis Charles, drums (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Elvin Jones drums (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Earl Chapin, French horn (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Bob Northern, French horn (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Chuck Wayne, guitar (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Ray Crawford, guitar (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Steve Lacy, soprano saxophone & lt;br & gt; Budd Johnson, tenor saxophone, clarinet (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Bill Elton, trombone (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Curtis Fuller, trombone (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Dick Lieb, trombone (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Cleveland, trombone (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Rod Levitt, trombone (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Allen Smith, trumpet (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Danny Stiles, trumpet (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Johnny Coles, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Louis Mucci, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Bill Barber, tuba & lt;br & gt; Al Block, woodwind (A1, A2, B1) & lt;br & gt; Ed Caine, woodwind (A3, A4, B2, B3) & lt;br & gt; Gil Evans, piano, conductor & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;Let My Children Hear Music & quot; & lt;b & gt; & lt;/b & gt;contains the powerful & quot;Hobo Ho & quot; and & quot;Adagio Ma Non Troppo & quot; which is based on a piano improvisation by Mingus in 1964. & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;On the original LP issued by Columbia, Mingus thanked producer Teo Macero for & quot;his untiring efforts in producing the best album I have ever made. & quot; From his deathbed in Mexico in 1979 he sent a message to Sy Johnson (who was responsible for many of the arrangements on the album), saying that Let My Children Hear Music was the record he liked most from his career. Although Mingus' small-group recordings are the ones most often cited as his premier works, this album does, in fact, rank at the top of his oeuvre and compares favorably with the finest large-ensemble jazz recordings by anyone, including Ellington. The pieces had been brewing over the years, one from as far back as 1939, and had been given more or less threadbare performances on occasion, but this was his first chance to record them with a sizable, well-rehearsed orchestra. Still, there were difficulties, both in the recording and afterward. The exact personnel is sketchy, largely due to contractual issues, several arrangers were imported to paste things together, making the true authorship of some passages questionable, and Macero (as he did with various Miles Davis projects) edited freely and sometimes noticeably. The listener will happily put aside all quibbles, however, when the music is heard. From the opening, irresistible swing of & quot; The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jiveass Slippers & quot; to the swirling depths of & quot; The I of Hurricane Sue, & quot; these songs are some of the most glorious, imaginative, and full of life ever recorded. Each piece has its own strengths, but special mention should be made of two. & quot;Adagio Ma Non Troppo & quot; is based entirely on a piano improvisation played by Mingus in 1964 and issued on Mingus Plays Piano. Its logical structure, playful nature, and crystalline moments of beauty would be astounding in a polished composition; the fact that it was originally improvised is almost unbelievable. & quot;Hobo Ho, & quot; a holy-roller powerhouse featuring the impassioned tenor of James Moody, reaches an incredible fever pitch, the backing horns volleying riff after riff at the soloists, the entire composition teetering right on the edge of total chaos. Let My Children Hear Music is a towering achievement and a must for any serious jazz fan. Included is the essay that accompanied the album. That essay, covering enormous territory, reads like an inspired Mingus bass solo and should be sought out by interested listeners. One can't recommend this album highly enough. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Brian Olewnick & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Re-mastering by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Charles Mingus, bass & lt;br & gt; Lonnie Hillyer, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Nottingham, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Joe Wilder, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Snooky Young, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Knepper, trombone & lt;br & gt; Julius Watkins, French horn & lt;br & gt; Charles McPherson, alto saxophone & lt;br & gt; Jerry Dodgion, reeds & lt;br & gt; Bobby Jones, tenor & lt;br & gt; Hal McKusick, reeds & lt;br & gt; James Moody, reeds & lt;br & gt; Jaki Byard, piano & lt;br & gt; John Foster, piano & lt;br & gt; Roland Hanna, piano & lt;br & gt; Charles McCracken, cello & lt;br & gt; Ron Carter, bass & lt;br & gt; Richard Davis, bass & lt;br & gt; Milt Hinton, bass & lt;br & gt; Dannie Richmond, drums & lt;br & gt; Teo Macero, alto saxophone, conductor & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Sassy's years on the Roulette label (1960-64) have been called the legendary singer's finest hour, a time when Vaughan's musicality merged exquisitely with her unbridled vocal ardor to achieve the sublime. & quot;Sarah Sings Soulfully & quot;, recorded at the close of that period, stands as a stunning testament to this claim - a divine collection of tracks that reveals an artist staking her soul on the rendering of each and every note, as well as the silences between them. Seductively spare, luxuriously poignant, and achingly honest all at the same time, Vaughan's vocals careen incandescently through the 12 standards presented here, swooping, sighing, and soaring with an intensity that remains unparalleled to this day. Listen to her reading of the & quot;Just Let Our Love Take Wing & quot; line on the version of Monk's & quot;'Round Midnight & quot; found here: the fat, luscious drop of the word & quot;just & quot;, the long fermata on & quot;love & quot;, and the dip and swell that pulls the phrase forward on & quot;take & quot;. & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt;Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Mississippi Fred Mc Dowell's 1969 album I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll features the blues guitarist playing, for the first time ever, on electric guitar. Also present was a rhythm section comprised of bass and drums. Blues purists were originally somewhat vexed over this transition, but the music on this classic record stands up with the best of Mississippi Fred. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; McDowell's voice is a powerful instrument in and of itself. Sprinkled throughout are spoken word intermezzos, which provide wonderful insight into the man behind the music, and also give the listener a feeling of & quot;being there & quot;. All in all, I Do Not Play No Rock 'n' Roll is a solid set from the master of bottleneck blues. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; & lt;b & gt;...But you have to hear it. It's beautiful. Stacey Kent Breakfast On The Morning Tram 180g 2LP (Vinyl)
& lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;180 Gram Double LP! Jazzy Elegance! Silky Voice! Includes a Fleetwood Mac Cover! Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; What happens when established artists grow out of their old skin? Put this disc into your music player and find out. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Breakfast On the Morning Tram is the musical equivalent of a growth spurt. With the important assistance of novelist, and now lyricist, Kazuo Ishiguro, Stacey Kent and her permanent sidekick/producer/music director, Jim Tomlinson, have moved to a new place. This disc, Stacey's first for Blue Note, marks the spot. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; One easy way to describe the change is to note what is not on this record: no Gershwin or Porter, no Rogers or Berlin, no Carmichael or Ellington. The Great American Songbook that has been the source of most Stacey Kent material since her recording career began a decade ago, is represented here only by three songs out of a dozen. Yet all the songs on this album are cousins of the great Songbook songs—they all “seem to inhabit the same musical world,” as Jim Tomlinson put it to me. They all tell stories, usually wistfully, something Stacey loves to do; they all make you think about love and loving; they all (if my experience is any indicator) stick in your head after just a few listenings. Most important, they all help Stacey show off her very best stuff. No Stacey Kent fan will be shocked by this record—they are much more likely to be delighted by it. She has never sounded better. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Stacey sings three songs here in French, two lesser-known love songs by the late Serge Gainsbourg and a famous samba from the 1966 French film A Man and a Woman, written by the Brazilians Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes, with a French lyric by Pierre Barouh. If you’re old enough to remember the movie, you’ll recognize the song at once. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Stacey sings one Fleetwood Mac song from the 1970s written by Stevie Nicks, Landslide, and makes it her own. And then there are three from the Songbook: Hard Hearted Hannah, Never Let Me Go and What A Wonderful World. On the latter, Stacey quietly enters a world previously inhabited by Louis Armstrong. By my lights her version is as powerful as Satchmo’s. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This label debut confounds expectations that the singer would spend her whole career producing one finely crafted American Songbook set after another. Husband Jim Tomlinson has produced a delightful post- Peyroux album of warm acoustic jazz-pop full of gentle surprises and exotic touches. Tomlinson's four originals co-written with Kazuo Ishiguro are modest marvels of jazzy elegance. & quot; - 4 Stars & lt;/b & gt; - Mojo, December 2007 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This jazz disc is vocalist Stacey Kent's first recording project for Blue Note, and it's a thoroughly captivating debut. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Billboard, October 2007 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This vinyl re-mastering of Breakfast On The Morning Tram is a perfect vehicle for Kent and her silky voice. Despite the higher pitch, there is great richness and texture. The guitars (both acoustic and electric) have a fuller resonance and complexity. As usual, the glossy packaging and gatefold cover are first-rate. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Robbie Gerson, www.audaud.com, 4/5 Stars!! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g Double Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Gatefold Jacket & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Stacey Kent - voice & lt;br & gt; Graham Harvey - piano and Fender Rhodes; & lt;br & gt; John Parricelli - guitars & lt;br & gt; Dave Chamberlain - double bass & lt;br & gt; Matt Skelton - drums and percussion & lt;br & gt; Jim Tomlinson - tenor sax, alto sax, soprano sax, flute & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP1 - Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. She was famous for her & quot;soft and cool & quot; singing style, which she is thought to have developed in response to noisy nightclub audiences. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Lee was born Norma Deloris Egstrom in Jamestown, North Dakota. After her mother died her father remarried and her stepmother was very cruel to her. So she left home, and in 1941, she joined Benny Goodman's band—then at the height of its popularity—and for over two years toured the United States with it. In early 1942, Lee had her first # 1 hit, & quot;Somebody Else Is Taking My Place, & quot; followed by 1943's & quot; Why Don't You Do Right?, & quot; which sold over a million copies and made her famous. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; She is most famous for her cover version of the Little Willie John hit & quot;Fever & quot; and her rendition of Leiber and Stoller's & quot;Is That All There Is? & quot; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Lee was nominated for twelve Grammy Awards, winning Best Contemporary Vocal Performance for her 1969 hit & quot;Is That All There Is? & quot; In 1995 she was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Made in the UK & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. He was a guitar player whose style echoed the dazzling technique of Jimi Hendrix as much as the virtuosity of blues greats from the Texas and Chicago schools. Vaughan ignited new interest in the blues at a time when longtime fans of the music were relying on old blues legends for their fix, and rock audiences had all but annulled the blues-rock marriage of the late 1960s. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Vaughan cultivated a new passion for the blues mostly through his riveting live performances, which bristled with guitar power and blues excitement. By playing loud and paying his respects to Hendrix, Vaughan attracted rock listeners to his concerts. But his essential repertoire was the blues. His highly charged, emotionally expressive guitar solos gave the blues a brand-new vitality and reinvented the music in thoroughly modern terms. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. When the group went pro, he was a mere fifteen years of age and, facing parental disapproval, he had to relinquish his post with the group to none other than Eric Clapton. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Topham would later play with Winston G alongside the likes of Marc Bolan, early Yes and Captain Beefheart. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; The object was to try and do a British Stax 'thing'. I think that & quot;Funks Elegy & quot; is heading in the direction I want to go - although (for me) the most satisfying track is our arrangement of 'Tuxedo Junction'. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Top Topham (in interview regarding Ascension Heights with Jerry Gilbert of Melody Maker) & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;(he) liked Topham's phrasing, which is down to earth melody, over a funky beat - far away from the progressive trait (of the day). I hope this name remains at the fore, as this album is easy to get into and nice to live with. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Jerry Gilbert, Melody Maker, 1970 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;an ambitious and breathtakingly original project that 'married' blues, rock and jazz & quot;. & lt;/b & gt; - Mike Oldfield, 1992 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; The sound is excellent late sixties stereo studio, which means instruments are heavily “box placed” left and right and phantomed dead center. Topham’s electric guitar floats thick and holographically three dimensionally well in front of the other instruments. His acoustic is closely miked, ultra-vivid and rock solid. The horns sound great, the bass lines are deep and taut and that horse hoof will “clop” its way through your skull if you crank it up too high. & quot; & lt;/b & gt;- Michael Fremer, www.musicangle.com, Music 8, Sound 9 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This LP’s rarity value alone commands attention: Topham was the Yardbirds’ founder guitarist, who had to leave the band because he was only 15. By 1969, at the age of 22, he delivered this solo LP, a long-forgotten take on the blues, far removed from the Yardbirds. Despite its Blue Horizon pedigree, it’s not of the Brit Blues school per se and is a stylistic mish-mash, more akin to Andrew Loog Oldham’s covers of the Stones’ canon, but its worth to Yardbirds hard-core is unparalleled. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Ken Kessler, Hi-Fi News, Sound Quality Rating: 70% & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Ross is joined by two versions of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with either Chet Baker or Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Crow or Henry Grimes on bass and drummer Dave Bailey. Annie Ross is at her best (and most appealing) on & quot;I've Grown Accustomed To Your Face, & quot; & quot;Give Me The Simple Life, & quot; & quot; How About You & quot; and & quot; The Lady's In Love With You, & quot; but all of the selections are quite rewarding and her interplay with baritonist Mulligan is consistently memorable. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Annie Ross, vocals & lt;br & gt; Gerry Mulligan Quartet: & lt;br & gt; Gerry Mulligan, baritone & lt;br & gt; Chet Baker, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Art Farmer, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Dave Bailey, drums & lt;br & gt; Henry Grimes, bass & lt;br & gt; Bill Crow, bass & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Instead she relied on an inborn understanding of how to get inside each song and make it her own, and she had the voice of an angel. Here, she relies on material taken from the Great American Songbook and uses vocal inflection, the beat, and her talent in setting up a verse to make this such an enjoyable album. Listen to the way she sings & quot;Give Me the Simple Life & quot; with Mulligan, Farmer, Crow and Bailey, or & quot;It Don’t Mean a Thing & quot; with Mulligan, Baker, Grimes and Bailey, for two superb examples of the synergy between singer and band. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - John Crossett, Soundstage.com & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; The packaging and sound are first-rate. So well done is this LP that if Pure Pleasure didn’t put the obligatory identifying line on the bottom of the rear cover you might think you had somehow stumbled onto a mint original. The sound is mint as well. Annie Ross’s voice is front and center, full-bodied and realistic. Mulligan’s baritone sax comes off well, sounding full, deep and reedy. Bass is firm, strong and deep, and there’s good snap to the drums. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - John Crossett, Soundstage.com

The Cab was one of that group of leaders of the 1930’s who, although playing no musical instrument, collected a fine band and a completely personal style. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; In this album, Cab has freshly recorded a dozen of his biggest hits of former years, taking full advantage of the most modern high fidelity recording techniques. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; This collection of classic jazz interpretations by Billie Holiday features all-star accompaniments from various sessions from 1935 to 1937. Tracks 5 & amp; 6 on side A and tracks 4 & amp; 5 on side B were taken from Billie's first and fifth sessions under her own name. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; When planning this album, I had a hellish time trying to choose what I thought were the absolute cream of Billie Holiday. In the course of this wrestling, it struck me that not only were Billie's vocals incredibly perfect, but that I could not remember a single instance of anyone playing a bad solo or even a bad phrase among the hundred or more performances I had to choose from in the golden period of her work. Checking over records (which was almost unnecessary, because I could still remember them almost note for note) was a rather beautiful and somewhat shattering experience. Jazz, a product of so many things - musical evolution, the social scene of a particular time, the economic atmosphere of the moment, what somebody had for breakfast that day - and none of those things will ever come together again as they did when these records were made. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Excerpt from George Avakian's liner notes & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl Analogue & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Mono & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Billie Holiday, vocals & lt;br & gt; Tracks A/1-3 - July 2, 1935: & lt;br & gt; Roy Eldridge, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Benny Goodman, clarinet & lt;br & gt; Ben Webster, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Teddy Wilson, piano & lt;br & gt; John Truehart, guitar & lt;br & gt; John Kirby, bass & lt;br & gt; Cozy Cole, drums & lt;br & gt; Track A/4 - October 25, 1935: & lt;br & gt; Replacing Goodman, Webster & amp; Truehart: & lt;br & gt; Benny Morton, trombone & lt;br & gt; Chu Berry, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Dave Barbour, guitar & lt;br & gt; Tracks A/5-6 - July 10, 1936: & lt;br & gt; Bunny Berigan, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Art Shaw, clarinet & lt;br & gt; Joe Bushkin, piano & lt;br & gt; Dick McDonough, guitar & lt;br & gt; Pete Peterson, bass & lt;br & gt; Cozy Cole, drums & lt;br & gt; Track B/1 - January 25, 1937: & lt;br & gt; Teddy Wilson, piano & lt;br & gt; Buck Clayton, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Benny Goodman, clarinet & lt;br & gt; Lester Young, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Freddie Green, guitar & lt;br & gt; Walter Page, bass & lt;br & gt; Jo Jones, drums & lt;br & gt; Tracks B/2-3 - June 1, 1937: & lt;br & gt; Buster Bailey, clarinet (replaces Goodman) & lt;br & gt; Tracks B/4-5 - June 15, 1937: & lt;br & gt; Replacing Wilson & amp; Goodman: & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Sherman, piano & lt;br & gt; Ed Hall, clarinet & lt;br & gt; Track B/6 - June 30, 1936: & lt;br & gt; Teddy Wilson, piano & lt;br & gt; Jonah Jones, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Johnny Hodges, alto saxophone & lt;br & gt; Harry Carney, baritone saxophone & lt;br & gt; Lawrence Lucie, guitar & lt;br & gt; John Kirby, bass & lt;br & gt; Cozy Cole, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Wrapped in the soothing strings of arranger Don Costa, Sarah Vaughan recorded an unsurprisingly dreamy ballads collection titled & quot;Snowbound & quot;. Despite the peaceful atmosphere and strolling tempo, Vaughan hardly treats the material as a cinch for her voice; all of these 11 songs find her searching for different ways to present time-worn standards. The opening title track is one of the warmest, most romantic songs on the LP, Vaughan plumbing the depths of her alto and nearly perfecting her humming vibrato. She also selects an obscure tune from the Gershwins' ( & quot;Blah, Blah, Blah & quot;, understandably overlooked but fun nevertheless) and, near the end, turns from cozy ballads into a mini-suite of forlorn material: & quot;I Fall in Love Too Easily & quot;, & quot;Glad to Be Unhappy & quot;, and & quot;Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most & quot;. & quot;Snowbound & quot; is an overlooked gem from Sarah Vaughan's Roulette years. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;On “I Remember You” Sarah shows her ability to bend a vocal or extend with vibrato, a vocal phrase. Her voice was in her prime, and it is a joy today to hear her make each song her own. The remastering by Sean Magee, done at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, is firstrate. The strings and woodwinds are mixed perfectly for listening as they are perfectly set on the sound stage leaving Vaughan upfront, but neither overwhelming, nor so distant as to be irrelevant. For fans of Ms. Vaughan, Snowbound would be a welcome addition to their collection of this jazz vocalist supreme. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Jeff Krow, www.audaud.com, 4 Stars!! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Remastering & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Stereo & lt;br & gt; • Original on the EMI Label & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Sarah Vaughan, vocals & lt;br & gt; Orchestra conducted by Don Costa & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. He was there to help define the instrument's future within the genre and the genre's future itself at the very beginning, his melodic conception so far advanced from most of his pre-war peers as to inhabit a plane all his own. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; For more than 40 years, Johnson played blues, jazz, and ballads his way; he was a true blues originator whose influence hung heavy on a host of subsequent blues immortals. Johnson's influence was massive, touching everyone from Robert Johnson, whose seminal approach bore strong resemblance to that of his older namesake, to Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, who each paid heartfelt tribute with versions of & quot;Tomorrow Night & quot; while at Sun. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark, October 16, 1963. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Robert Pete Williams, the most avant-garde blues performer ever recorded, took the pain in his soul and the dirt on his hands and made songs out of them. No punk rock band has ever matched the jagged, acerbic fury of the riffs Williams played 35 years ago. No rapper has approached his ability to evoke the torment of life in prison or bend language to cast an eerie spell over a chance encounter with a seductive woman. His blues was extremely original, sometimes even hard to understand. No other performer has captured the emotional effect of a desperate situation like he did. He had never been recorded when he was discovered in Angola Penitentiary in Louisiana, convicted of murder. Robert Pete probably has the most unique blues style of all bluesmen. Neither his guitar work nor his singing can be categorized into any established regional style such as & quot;East Coast, & quot; & quot;Mississippi Delta & quot; or & quot;Texas Blues. & quot; His music and lyrics are spontaneous and original. No major influence of other bluesmen can be found in his idiosyncratic, intensely personal performances. Blues scholar Pete Welding described his music as & quot;tough, mean, and, above all, impassioned like the man himself. & quot; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • 180g vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-mastering & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Robert Pete Williams, 12-string guitar, 6-string guitar, vocals & lt;br & gt; Big Joe Williams, kazoo & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP 1: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;br & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Classic southern soul with sweet Memphis sound. Peebles' voice aches and swoons across these songs backed by a band featuring Howard Grimes on drums, Jack Hale on trombone, Charles Hodges on keyboards, and more! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Perhaps because seven out of the ten songs here were written by Ann (in collaboration with her husband, singer-songwriter Donald Bryant, and seberal others), I Can't Stand the Rain feels like her most personal album. It's quieter, less aggressive than much of Ann's previous work, but no less assured. With her marbelous raw honey voice - so wispy sweet it breaks, then so full and hard it's chilling - she can be both tough and tender, sometimes in the same song. But whether heartbroken or joyous, righteously vengeful or disillusioned, Peebles always has a strength, a personal fire that makes each song glow from deep inside. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This wonderful album, originally released in 1974 on the Memphis-based Hi Records label, deserved a wider audience than it ended up getting at the time. It played to Ann Peebles' great strength, her poised and sultry voice, and surrounded by the sparse, easy funkiness of the trademark Hi rhythm section and producer Willie Mitchell's perfect use of horns and strings, she sings like a resilient but disappointed angel on this impressive set of songs about the darker side of love. Her best song is here, the eccentric but brilliant & quot;I Can't Stand the Rain, & quot; along with a marvelous version of Joe Simon's & quot;(You Keep Me) Hangin' On, & quot; and perfect readings of a pair of Earl Randle songs, & quot;If We Can't Trust Each Other & quot; and & quot;I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down. & quot; Peebles sings her heart out, and with those somehow bright-sounding Hi grooves behind her, it all comes together to make a classic album of dark, bouncy, and beautiful Southern soul. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Steve Leggett/AMG & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, South Lauderdale, Memphis, Tennessee, 1973. & lt;br & gt; Re-mastered by Kevin Gray. & lt;br & gt; Produced by Willie Mitchell. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Re-mastering by Kevin Gray & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Ann Peebles, vocals & lt;br & gt; Howard Grimes, drums & lt;br & gt; Jack Hale, trombone & lt;br & gt; Charles Hodges, keyboards & lt;br & gt; Leroy Hodges, bass & lt;br & gt; Mabon & quot;Teenie & quot; Hodges, guitar & lt;br & gt; Wayne Jackson, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Ed Logan, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Andrew Love, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; James Mitchell, baritone saxophone & lt;br & gt; Archie Turner, piano & lt;br & gt; Rhode, background vocals & lt;br & gt; Memphis Sanctified Singers, horn section & lt;br & gt; Sandra Chalmers, background vocals & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side One: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. By then, she had also contributed to recordings by Fleetwood Mac and became romantically involved with the group's bassist, John McVie. She then married McVie and officially joined the group, for which she served as vocalist/keyboardist/songwriter, contributing some of Fleetwood Mac's biggest hits. In 1976, Sire Records issued the first U.S. release of what had been a mega-import of the Blue Horizon 1970 U.K. release, and album called simply Christine Perfect, the maiden name of Christine McVie. You don't need a crystal ball to tell you the album is classic and tremendous – the big surprise is that it didn't go multi-platinum in the States. The rest he learned from life experiences and influences. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Sugar sits among the best-received of Turrentine's albums in which he added upbeat funk and rock elements to his mixture of soul jazz, a combination that led to significant sales. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile re-mastering & lt;br & gt; • Reissue of 1970 release & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Alan Bates took Thelonious Monk into the studio for his first trio recording in fifteen years with his old sidekick Art Blakey. It has been said often enough that Blakey is the ideal drummer for Monk, and one has only to hear them together again after all this time to realize the truth of the statement. If Blakey at times seems to push the pianist almost too hard, that is in fact the nature of their musical relationship. And, throughout the session, Blakey appeared to be vying with the producer in alternately cajoling and coercing Monk into fulfilling various requests from the small invited audience. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; There’s nothing weak, indecisive or “washed up” about Monk’s playing here. He sounds strong, in great humor and thoroughly engaged....The piano sound is absolutely superb harmonically, texturally and especially dynamically. It’s big, intimate and close with the hand separation giving you unusually clear access to Monk’s musical thinking. & quot; & lt;/b & gt;- Michael Fremer, www.musicangle.com, Music 9, Sound 9 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Thelonious Monk, piano & lt;br & gt; Al McKibbon, bass & lt;br & gt; Art Blakey, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. One of her finest sessions! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Ross is known for her singing style of vocalese; the practice of setting lyrics to an instrumental jazz solo. Her most well-known song, & quot;Twisted & quot;, has been recorded by Joni Mitchell , Bette Midler and others. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Besides Ross' interpretations of & quot;I'm Nobody's Baby & quot; and & quot; You Took Advantage Of Me & quot; (among others), the album also includes five instrumentals showcasing the talents of Zoot Sims and Russ Freeman. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;[J]azz aficionados who know their onions appreciate that [Annie Ross] is one of the best interpreters of standards in the business, so this set from World Pacific back in 1959 – featuring Zoot Sims on sax – ranks with any ‘Great American Songbook’ you can imagine. The stance here differs from her more famous work as part of Lambert, Hicks & amp; Ross, the crack sextet (with a touch of big-band class provided by Mel Lewis on drums) accenting her vocals with uncanny precision. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The numbers heard on Chet Baker & amp; Crew were among a prolific flurry of recordings Baker was involved in during the last week of July 1956 - fresh from an extended European stay. The crew on these sides includes Phil Urso (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), Peter Littman (drums), and of course Baker (trumpet/vocals). Joining the combo on both the original as well as the alternate take of & quot;To Mickey's Memory & quot; and & quot;Pawnee Junction & quot; is Bill Loughbrough (chromatic tympani). His unmistakable percussive accents and tuned drum solos give these West Coast bop tracks uniquely Polynesian intonations. The band members take full advantage of their individual roles and abilities as soloists to really stretch out on & quot;Slightly Above Moderate & quot; and the Urso-credited composition & quot;Halema & quot; - named after Baker's wife. The chemistry of cool that flows between Urso and Baker is perhaps at its finest during the seamless exchange heard on & quot;Worryin' the Life Out of Me. & quot; Timmons also boasts notable contributions throughout. His playful and scampering style dresses up the bluesy & quot;Lucius Lu & quot; and & quot;Line for Lyons, & quot; among others. The latter is also notable as it contains the sole Baker vocal on this set. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; This LP reissue of Chet Baker & amp; Crew increases the original eight-song Pacific Jazz collection to include all 14 tracks completed during three sessions in late July 1956 at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;“The surfaces of both these LPs [PPRLP1224 Chet Baker Chet Baker & amp; Crew & amp; & lt;a href= & quot;/prodinfo.asp?number=PPRLP38 & quot; & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#0000FF & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;PPRLP38 Lee Konitz & amp; Gerry Mulligan Konitz Meets Mulligan & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/a & gt;] are impeccable -- as quiet as vinyl gets. & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;180g Vinyl Re-mastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering! Featuring Jim Hall on Guitar! Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Paul Desmond, jazz alto saxophonist and composer, was best know for the work he did with Dave Brubeck Quartet and for penning the group's biggest hit & quot;Take Five & quot;. He was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast's 'cool jazz' scene. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;As intended, this album presents alto sax specialist Paul Desmond as never featured before, with the backing of a string orchestra. The record, filled with such beautiful jazz standards as & quot;My Funny Valentine, & quot; & quot;I've Got You Under My Skin, & quot; and & quot;Body and Soul, & quot; is very rich in texture, yet subtle and mellow overall in mood. It's unyielding purpose: to soothe the souls of its listeners. Desmond's style and tone shine with an alluring quality, and the record is filled with melodies that don't fail to stimulate the sophisticated jazz listener. Desmond's melodies are eloquently detailed and charmingly spun in the midst of the string orchestra arranged and conducted by Bob Prince. The legendary Jim Hall is featured as guest guitarist, playing yet another scintillating role and using his classic comping style. Hall is perhaps the most highly respected of all jazz guitarists for his good taste and witty inventiveness. Desmond has always been most familiar to the jazz public for his sweeping scale passages and his seemingly effortless spontaneity during periods of improvisation, although here he is often featured in a more lyrical ballad style on such romantic tunes as & quot;My Funny Valentine, & quot; & quot;Late Lament, & quot; and & quot; Then I'll Be Tired of You. & quot; This album is a highly innovative and meticulously crafted work, reflecting the ongoing success of both Desmond and Hall within the 1960s and the cool jazz period. Both of these musicians spent time working with Dave Brubeck and later lent themselves to many of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova projects. The arrangements are extraordinary throughout this collection, including the charming & quot;Valentine, & quot; which begins with a fantastic Elizabethan flavor. The intro sets up the mood to carry Desmond into the first chorus, which then glides into a 20th century style. The tune & quot;I Should Care & quot; is & quot;a shimmering debt to Ibert and one of the most imaginative blendings you will ever hear of strings, reeds, French horn and harp, & quot; according to the liner notes. The tone of the album: lush, reflective, thought-provoking, and soul-stirring. This work is quite a plus for any listener and especially those who consider themselves avid fans of Paul Desmond. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Shawn M. Haney /AMG & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This is different from most sax & amp; strings efforts of the period in that the arrangements are thoughtful and never corny, and the string orchestra doesn’t drown out Desmond. This album succeeds because although it softens some of the edges of modern jazz, Desmond’s own style of cool and silky tones fits in perfectly with the strings. Other plusses on the session were the presence of famed guitarist Jim Hall, and the terrific string arrangements and conducting of Bob Prince... Much of the music is rather introspective and soothing in style, fitting in well with Desmond’s unique sound... [A] finely-balanced and appealing album from beginning to end, in the very best sonics which deliver the string sounds with great richness and clarity. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - John Henry, audaud.com, 5 Stars! & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & lt;a href= & quot;http://audaud.com/2013/08/desmond-blue-paul-desmond-with-strings-rca-victorpure-pleasure-vinyl/ & quot; & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#0000FF & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Click here & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/a & gt; to read the entire review! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recorded at Webster Hall, New York City & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Re-mastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side 1: & lt;br & gt; & lt;/b & gt;1. & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Remastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recorded July 1963 at RCA Victor's Studio B, this session finds Rollins and Hawkins backed by Paul Bley, Roy McCurdy, Henry Grimes and Bob Cranshaw. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot; This is a memorable meeting of a pair of genial giants - Sonny Rollins, who has been called again and again the boss of the modern tenor sax, and Coleman Hawkins, who is the father of jazz saxophone playing. Each has made enormous contributions to jazz improvisation, beyond the limits of his instrument. The sum total of their work forms the impressive foundation for this once-in-a-lifetime album. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; This recording is extraordinary in every sense, and not merely in that it marks the first time (except for a brief on-stage appearance at the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival, which inspired this studio recording) that these great musicians have played together. Each has blended his own strong personality with the other's yet neither has lost his individuality. Where one reaches into the other's & quot;bag & quot;, it is done with musical logic and respect; always, the goal of a cohesive duet relationship is uppermost in each of their minds. And perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of this album is that neither musician plays safe; each exercises his powerful imagination throughout, running all the risks entailed in daring improvisation - but gaining also the satisfactions inherent in such an approach. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Excerpt from George Avakian's liner notes & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl Analogue & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Mono & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Sonny Rollins, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Coleman Hawkins, tenor saxophone & lt;br & gt; Paul Bley, piano & lt;br & gt; Roy McCurdy, drums & lt;br & gt; Henry Grimes, bass (A3,B1,B3) & lt;br & gt; Bob Cranshaw, bass (A1,A2,B2) & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side A: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. This solo became one of the two or three most influential solos in all of jazz history, an 80-second masterpiece. Nearly every tenor player who followed made it a priority to learn that solo, note for note. But & quot;Flying Home & quot; marked neither the beginning nor the end of Jacquet's seven-decade career. He was one of jazz's great survivors, thought of as an outrageous musician when he was young but hailed as a classic figure in old age. He was as effective with romantic jazz ballads as he was with the explosive performances with which he made his reputation. Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet is heard in top form throughout this quartet set, recorded for the French Black & amp; Blue label, whilst touring throughout Europe in the 1970s. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Illinois Jazquet, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Hank Jones, piano & lt;br & gt; George Duvivier, bass & lt;br & gt; J.C. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Carson Smith, Joe Mandragon and Larry Bunker join forces to create this spontaneous and inventive jazz album. & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;O.K., so it's mono. And, for much of the recording, Mulligan's quartet seems simply to be backing Konitz. But hang on, this is a marvelous little gem. Mulligan on the baritone, Konitz on alto, and -- yes -- Chet Baker on trumpet. How can you pass this up? & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; But this is more than an artifact. This is jazz at its spontaneous and inventive best. Konitz, freed from Stan Kenton, has all sorts of new ideas about these old standards. And, for many of the cuts, as Lee explores the possibilities, you can hear Mulligan purring far in the background (mono, remember), and, every once in a while, moving to the foreground to make a few statements of his own. These two jazz minds talk to each other, tease each other, support and -- in a gentle way -- challenge each other. & lt;br & gt; And, of course, in a few cuts, Baker's sweet trumpet announces itself and joins the two sax players in their explorations. The now-unheralded but extremely deft Carson Smith takes on most of the bass responsibilities, and provides -- along with Larry Bunker on drums -- a solid stage for Baker, Mulligan, and Konitz to swing on. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;Mulligan, Konitz, and Baker, of course, went their separate ways, Konitz and Mulligan to long and brilliant careers, Baker to a briefer, tragic, but still shining career. This, then, was a moment in time, and is now your chance to catch these giants sharing a stage, playing for and with one another, showing admiration and affection for each other's talents and ideas. & lt;br & gt; Mono--so what? Pressed at Pallas in Germany!. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Friends, originally released in 2004, is a collection of tracks featuring rootsy folk and blues collaborations with Bibb and friends including Taj Mahal, Odetta, Charlie Musselwhite, Guy Davis, Mamadou Diabate, Djelimady Toukara and more! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Friends is the accurate and revealing title for New York bluesman Eric Bibb's tenth album since 1997. The cuts here feature rootsy folk and blues collaborations with different & quot;friends & quot; in differing small group settings. The set starts with a killer acoustic slide duet between Bibb and Guy Davis on the nugget & quot;99 ½ Won't Do. & quot; The contrast between Davis' sweet and smoky delivery and Bibb's husky wail — akin to Blind Willie Johnson's in places — offers a double-sided dimension in interpretation for the listener, as well. Elsewhere, Charlie Musselwhite gives a killer snaky harmonica performance on & quot;Six O' Clock Blues. & quot; Taj Mahal makes two appearances; one in a duet on & quot;Goin' Down Slow, & quot; and one in a trio with Bibb and Malian guitarist Djelimady Tounkara on a medley of the traditional & quot;Kulanjan & quot; and Bibb's own & quot;Sebastian's Tune. & quot; Speaking of Mali, and Mahal, Bibb also covers the elder bluesman's classic & quot;Lovin' in My Baby's Eyes, & quot; with the great kora player Mamadou Diabate that rivals the original. There's also a gorgeous version of Guy and Susanna Clark's & quot; The Cape, & quot; with guitarist Martin Simpson, Bibb's moving & quot; For You & quot; with Ruthie Foster, and & quot;Tain't No Such Thing, & quot; a bright new folk song written and sung with legendary folksinger Odetta. Mohan Veena ace Harry Manx performs with Bibb on the high lonesome, droning blues of & quot;Needed Time, & quot; and with Kristina Olsen on her & quot;If I Stayed. & quot; The set closes with the tender & quot;Dance Me to the End of Love, & quot; (an original, not the Leonard Cohen tune) with the Lovin' Spoonful Jerry Yester playing piano. Given that most records of this type are mixed bags at best, with & quot;star-studded & quot; collabs serving to muck up or water down rather than enhance performances, Friends is an anomaly. There is nothing that's obvious or overblown here, everything is subtly shaded, and the performers serve the songs and not themselves. The listener gets no sense of back-patting or self-congratulation, only the great pleasure of hearing this music in a revealing, emotionally honest way. Bravo. - Thom Jurek/AMG & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Combine the talents of folk-blues star Eric Bibb with a host of accomplished musical friends and you have the makings of a significant album… Friends also has wonderful sonics. There's space aplenty, along with tone and timbre that sound real. Most of all, though, there is a sense of presence, the feeling of actually being in the company of the musicians. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - John Crossett, www.theaudiobeat.com, 4/5 Music, 4.5/5 Sound! & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;br & gt; & lt;/b & gt; • Double LP & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • 180 Gram Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Gatefold jacket & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; LP1 - Side A: & lt;br & gt; & lt;/b & gt; 1. 99 1/2 Won't Do (feat. & lt;b & gt; & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt;Limited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl from Pure Pleasure Records! Audiophile Re-Mastering! Starring Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen, The Jimmy Giuffre Trio, Jimmy Rushing, Mal Waldron & amp; Featuring Many More! & lt;/font & gt; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot; The Sound of Jazz & quot; is a 1957 edition of the CBS television series Seven Lively Arts, and was one of the first major programs featuring jazz to air on American network television. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The one-hour program aired on Sunday, December 8, 1957 over CBS Television between 5 and 6 in the afternoon. The show was hosted by New York Herald-Tribune media critic John Crosby, directed by Jack Smight, and produced by Robert Herridge. Jazz writers Nat Hentoff and Whitney Balliett were the primary music consultants. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The Sound of Jazz brought together 28 leading musicians from the swing era including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins; the Chicago style players of the same era, like Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen, Vic Dickenson, and Pee Wee Russell; and younger 'modernist' musicians such as Jimmy Giuffre. These players played separately with their compatriots (see the song list below), but also joined to combine various styles in one group, such as Mal Waldron's group and the group backing Billie Holiday on & quot;Fine and Mellow & quot;. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The show's performance of & quot;Fine and Mellow & quot; reunited Billie Holiday with her estranged long-time friend Lester Young for the final time. Jazz critic Nat Hentoff, who was involved in the show, recalled that during rehearsals, they kept to opposite sides of the room. Young was very weak, and Hentoff told him to skip the big band section of the show and that he could sit while performing in the group with Holiday. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; During the performance of & lt;b & gt; & quot;Fine and Mellow & quot; & lt;/b & gt;, Webster played the first solo. Hentoff remembered: & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Lester got up, and he played the purest blues I have ever heard, and [he and Holiday] were looking at each other, their eyes were sort of interlocked, and she was sort of nodding and half–smiling. It was as if they were both remembering what had been — whatever that was. And in the control room we were all crying. When the show was over, they went their separate ways. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Within three years, both Young and Holiday had died. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; • 180 Gram Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Re-mastering by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; Ben Webster, tenor sax (Mal Waldron All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Billie Holiday, vocals & lt;br & gt; Coleman Hawkins, tenor sax (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star), (Mal Waldron All-Star), (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Count Basie, piano (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Danny Barker, guitar (Mal Waldron All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Dickie Wells, trombone (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Doc Cheatham, trumpet (Mal Waldron All-Star), (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Earl Warren, saxophone (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Eddie Jones, bass (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Emmet Berry, trumpet (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Frank Rehak, trombone (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Freddy Green, guitar (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Harry Carney, saxophone (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen, vocals, trumpet & lt;br & gt; Jim Atlas, bass (Mal Waldron All-Star), (Mal Waldron All-Star), (Jimmy Giuffre Trio) & lt;br & gt; Jim Hall, guitar (Jimmy Giuffre Trio) & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Giuffre, baritone, clarinet, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Rushing, vocals (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Jo Jones, drums (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star), (Mal Waldron All-Star), (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Joe Newman, trumpet (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Lester Young, tenor sax (Mal Waldron All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Mal Waldron, piano, piano soloist & lt;br & gt; Milt Hinton, bass (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Nat Pierce, piano, piano soloist (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Pee Wee Russell, clarinet (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Rex Stewart, trumpet (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Roy Eldridge, trumpet (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; Vic Dickenson, trombone (Henry & quot;Red & quot; Allen All-Star), (Mal Waldron All-Star), (Count Basie All-Star) & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side I: & lt;br & gt; & lt;/b & gt;1. & lt;font color= & quot;#FF0000 & quot; & gt; & lt;b & gt;Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Gene & quot;Jug & quot; Ammons tended to be critical of organists; he was quoted as saying that & quot;organ players don't know any changes. & quot; However, as critical as the Chicago tenor saxman might have been of organists — most of them, anyway — he did some of his best work in their presence. When Ammons was united with Jack McDuff, Johnny & quot;Hammond & quot; Smith and other B-3 masters in the '60s, the sparks would fly. They certainly fly on this excellent album, which finds Ammons and Richard & quot;Groove & quot; Holmes co-leading a soul-jazz/hard bop organ combo that also includes guitarist Gene Edwards and drummer Leroy Henderson. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; The quartet is heard in two settings on August 15, 1961 — a Los Angeles studio in the afternoon, and several hours later at an L.A. club called the Black Orchid. Ammons and Holmes prove to be a strong combination in both settings, although their playing is somewhat looser at the Orchid, where the delights include some slow blues (Ammons' & quot;Hittin' the Jug & quot;), a smoky ballad ( & quot;Willow Weep for Me & quot;) and a lightning-fast barnburner (Ammons' & quot;Juggin' Around & quot;). It's obvious that Ammons and Holmes share a lot of common ground on Groovin' With Jug. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Side 1 recorded at the Black Orchid on August 15, 1961. & lt;br & gt; Side 2 recorded at Pacific Jazz Studios on August 15, 1961. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Re-mastered by Steve Hoffman & amp; Kevin Gray. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-mastering & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Richard & quot;Groove & quot; Holmes, organ & lt;br & gt; Gene Ammons, tenor sax & lt;br & gt; Gene Edwards, guitar & lt;br & gt; Leroy Henderson, drums & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; For the middle album of his Johnny Winter-produced late-'70s music trilogy, blues giant Muddy Waters brought a new spirit to some familiar material. Starting with members of Waters' touring band – Pinetop Perkins, Bob Margolin, Willie & quot;Big Eyes & quot; Smith – Winter added underrated guitarist (and longtime Waters foil) Jimmy Rogers and extraordinary harp player Big Walter Horton to the mix. The songs recorded for I'm Ready offer a mix of new material and vintage hit singles like the title cut, the mid-'60s jewel Screamin' and Cryin', or the Willie Dixon-penned I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; For new listeners trying to get a feel of what the blues is all about, I'm Ready is the perfect place to start. Once you experience a taste of Muddy Waters, you'll be ready for more. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Judging by the gatefold black and white photo, everyone had a great time making the album. You’ll have as good a time listening. The sound is quite three-dimensional, with a pronounced but pleasant presence region peak that ads a needed rough edge to the proceedings. The stage is relatively compact and very coherent with plenty of old fashioned mike leakage that helps to create a “live” sound in an era of isolation booth multi-track mono productions. Producer Winter and engineer Still knew the sound they were going for and they got it! & quot; & lt;/b & gt;- Michael Fremer, www.musicangle.com, Music 8/10, Sound 8/10 & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Waters tested this [ & quot;Hoochie Coochie Man & quot;] out at the Chicago blues club Zanzibar. Dixon gave him some advice: 'Well, just get a little rhythm pattern,' he said. 'Do the same thing over again, y'know.' Waters cut it a couple of weeks later, with Dixon on bass. & quot; & lt;/b & gt;- Rolling Stone & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Features: & lt;br & gt; • 180g Vinyl & lt;br & gt; • Pressed at Pallas in Germany & lt;br & gt; • Limited Edition & lt;br & gt; • Audiophile Re-Mastering & lt;br & gt; • Gatefold Jacket & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Musicians: & lt;br & gt; Muddy Waters, vocals, guitar & lt;br & gt; Pinetop Perkins, piano & lt;br & gt; Bob Margolin, bass & lt;br & gt; Willie & quot;Big Eyes & quot; Smith, drums & lt;br & gt; Jimmy Rogers, guitar & lt;br & gt; Big Walter Horton, harp & lt;br & gt; Jerry Portnoy, harp & lt;br & gt; Johnny Winter, guitar & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Good thing, too, because it was Ruth Brown who put Atlantic on the map, make no mistake. She did that with 24 R & amp;B hit singles from 1949 to 1960, five of which crossed over to the Billboard Pop charts. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & quot;Ruth Brown's second LP is a minor masterpiece, built around a handful of hit singles and B-sides from the prior year ( & quot;Book of Lies, & quot; & quot;Just Too Much, & quot; & quot; When I Get You Baby, & quot; & quot; This Little Girl's Gone Rockin', & quot; & quot; Why Me & quot;) and containing a pair of current single sides, & quot;Jack O' Diamonds & quot; and & quot;I Can't Hear a Word You Say. & quot; Brown is amazing in her range, from the upbeat, romantic & quot;I Hope We Meet (On the Road Someday) & quot; to the jaunty shouter & quot; Why Me & quot; -- her timbre ranges from sweetly romantic to hard and raspy, and listening to the transformations, between the smooth, quick tempo & quot;Just Too Much & quot; to the hard, lusty & quot;Somebody Touched Me, & quot; one thinks of a distaff Sam Cooke. Brown's accompaniments may have lacked the polish of Cooke's sides, and she wasn't really shooting for pop-crossover success (though she saw some). Her singing even overcomes excessively pop-oriented arrangements on & quot; When I Get You Baby. & quot; At various times, in her upper register, Brown recalls Clyde McPhatter's falsetto singing, while in her middle and lower registers, as on & quot;I Can't Hear a Word You Say, & quot; she comes up with a power that could melt a microphone stand. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - Bruce Eder/AMG & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; High quality 180g Vinyl LP & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Re-mastered by Ray Staff at Air Mastering & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Made in the U.K. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Selections: & lt;br & gt; Side One: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; 1. Pressed at Pallas in Germany! & lt;/b & gt; & lt;/font & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Sonny Rollins' mid-sixties experiment with bossa nova was completely different than was Stan Getz “Jazz Samba”. Rollins stayed true to his bop and avant garde roots, using bossa nova as a surgeon uses a scalpel, to dissect and deconstruct familiar melodies and turn them into something new. This hip reinterpretation of standards is Sonny's trademark, and in this album it's uncompromising. The whole album is interesting and highly original. Rollin's version of 'If Ever I Would Leave You' is nothing less than this: one of the greatest tenor solos in the history of jazz. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; Recorded in RCA Victor's Studio B, New York, NY, April 5, 25, 26, and May 14, 1962.
