Johnson's discography. While he was usually featured in either a quintet format, a sextet with co-leader and fellow trombonist Kai Winding, or playing as a guest soloist with larger combos or big bands, he is the only horn featured on these dates. His accompanists are all great musicians who had already made a name for themselves: Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Max Roach on drums. Even if the initial idea was to record this single album, the sessions went so well that it was decided to go on producing material for still another album, which would be titled Blue Trombone. This quartet would never record again. & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt; & quot;Playing standards and originals, Johnson assembled a mighty band with pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers, and especially on-fire drummer Max Roach, a group you'd be hard-pressed to top. The band was so good -- and loaded with material -- that a second album, Blue Trombone, was issued from the extended session. Bop is their thing, and Johnson's flawless lines on his trombone were never more in evidence than on this stupendous effort. As a time capsule, Johnson's smaller ensemble dates have stood the test of time as perhaps his best ever -- which is debatable, considering all his fine work, but First Place is indisputably brilliant. & quot; & lt;/b & gt; - AllMusic & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Features: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; 180g Pure Virgin Vinyl & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Limited Edition Clear Vinyl & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; One pressing - Collector's Edition & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Only 500 Copies Worldwide & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Direct Metal Mastering & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Newly remastered & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Deluxe inner sleeves & lt;br & gt; & amp;bull; Import & lt;br & gt; & lt;br & gt; & lt;b & gt;Musicians: & lt;/b & gt; & lt;br & gt; J.J.
