Book Synopsis

Anthology of Human Relations, Racism, and Other Forms of Oppression in the United States of America helps students develop an understanding of the concept of race, the realities of racism and white supremacy as cornerstones of American institutions, and other forms of oppression.

The readings in the first part of the anthology introduce race, deconstruct racism and white privilege through selections that address racial formation, institutional racism, affirmative action, and the changing face of U.S. education. Part II includes readings that explore racism against minority groups including Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Chican@s and Latin@s, and those with multiracial identities. In Part III, students read about other forms of oppression that exist in the American society including ageism, sexism, ableism, and religious intolerance. The final section of the anthology addresses social change and acting against racism and these other forms of oppression.

A timely, critical resource, Anthology of Human Relations, Racism, and Other Forms of Oppression in the United States of America is an ideal text for courses in ethnic studies and sociology, as well as any course that explores the history, social context, and changing faces of racism and oppression in America.

Lynn Davis is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Human Relations and Multicultural Education at St. Cloud State University. She earned her doctoral degree in higher education and higher education administration from St. Cloud State University and her master's degree in business administration, management, and operations from the Institute of Public Administration and Management, University of Sierra Leone.
