Every cellist knows the 21 Etudes of Jean-Louis Duport. Inexplicably, the 6 cello concertos the celebrated virtuoso surely also composed for himself and performed on his numerous concert tours are almost unknown. Neither practical sheet-music editions nor CD recordings of them exist.

Jean-Louis Duport became one of the most famous cellists of his time. He had to give up his post as solo cellist at the Paris Opéra when the Revolution came in 1789. Since his good connections with noble circles were now of little use, he went to Berlin to join his brother, who was leader of the orchestra at the court of Frederick the Great. There Jean-Louis obtained a post as chamber musician and succeeded his brother as solo cellist at the Berlin Opera. Working together, the Duport brothers reached their highpoint, both financially and artistically.

The Cello Concertos nos. 4 and 5 presented here share the same three-movement scheme: Allegro - slow middle movement - Rondeau. They demand the extremely virtuosic technique which lends expression to the respective affections in what Fétis called the "style large et expressif". In his cello concertos, Jean-Louis Duport was surely influenced by his brother’s direct contact with Mozart and Beethoven. There is some doubt whether it was Jean-Pierre or Jean-Louis who performed the Sonatas op. 5 dedicated to Friedrich Wilhelm II before the king at the court with Beethoven at the piano. -
(from liner notes by Manfred Hörr)

Peter Horr is considered one of the most interesting and versatile German musicians of his generation. An early interest in 'ancient music,' leading to seminal studies with Heinrich Schiff and Christophe Coin at the Basel Music Academy, made him into the wroldwide concert soloist and sought-after chamber musician he is today.

The Hofkapelle of Weimar, founded in 2008, brings together inspired young artists from Germany's leading conservatoires and orchestras in a series of "academies," to give enthusiastic performances of highly demanding programmes. The history of the ducal "court chapel" sets a great example in reconciling Baroque and modern performance practice.
