Mahler follows his broad spectrum of emotions in his Fifth Symphony. His closeness to nature, nostalgic homeland reminiscences, the outcry of a restless soul and the dramatic and sudden changes in atmosphere are already found in his first four symphonies. But now the oppressiveness which haunts the first two movements seems unable to be pacified by the following three: The realms of consolation and deliverance are this time kept from the composer (and the listener), he is thrown back into his loneliness and his inner tension. The fruitful collaboration over many decades between Kubelik and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra reached unique high points in Mahler’s symphonies again and again. Mahler’s Fifth Symphony appears here as a live recording from the Herkules Hall of the Munich Residenz.
