Three Austrian émigrés, Peter Schidlof (viola), Norbert Brainin (violin) and Siegmund Nissel (violin) from Vienna joined up with the British cellist Martin Lovett and formed the Amadeus Quartet in 1947. Their smooth, seamless style of playing attracted a large following.
The String Quartet in D minor, "Der Tod und das Mädchen" (Death and the Maiden), is considered one of Schubert's finest chamber works. The String Quartet in C minor (popularly known as the "Quartettsatz") is the first movement of a string quartet that Schubert never completed. It was listed as his String Quartet no. 12 on publication. The unfinished quartet is regarded as one of the first products of Schubert's mature phase of composition.
