CompactFlash (CF) is a mass storage memory device which uses flash chips. The first CF cards were manufactured in 1994.
CompactFlash cards use the Parallel ATA (PATA) interface, the same interface used by early hard disk drives and CD ROMs. CF cards are currently available in sizes ranging from 2MB to 512GB. Potential read/write speeds of up to125MB/s may be achieved on this bus.
CompactFlash cards use a 50-pin connector. Because of their Parallel ATA interface, there are many adapters avaailable wich allow a CF card to be used in applications such as IDE storage or in place of hard-to-find PCMCIA cards.
