The 2A7 was designed to be optimized for combat in urban terrain, with features such as a crew-compartment cooling-system, a new 20 kW auxiliary power unit, a Saab Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System, a field trial proven combat management and information system, and a retrofitted Attica thermal imaging module in the commander optics. It was also equipped with a new armor package that features Tungsten, Titanium as well as Nano-Ceramics, providing improved protection to the tank.
The 2A7 was used by the German Army in a number of conflicts, including the War in Afghanistan, and has been deployed to a number of different roles, including reconnaissance, security, and direct combat. It has also been used in peacekeeping operations, such as the UN mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
